I really love that this video shows a lot of things that can be difficult! I really can’t stand watching tutorials where it all goes smooth. Then you try it and everything in the world goes wrong lol. Thank you so much for this!
My husband had the same reaction as Kitty, it’s nice to see a video that shows some of the problems you might run into. Projects never go smoothly. It helps to see a pro deal with the same issues.
what i do is fit a 3/4 plywood tight fit over the tub and demo with no worries. then clean it up, remove the plywood and carefully remove the last two of tiles at the bottom that plywood obstructed.
That's what I am doing as well... and using oscillating multi-tool to cut around the tile boundary. Will red guard the new wall surface b4 adding surround or re-tiling.
I have learned so much from watching your videos. So much so, I am now in the process of buying a home that needs some remodeling and repairs. While I am not at the level you are, I do feel my confidence in many projects is doable thanks to your videos.
You did a great job of showing how much work it is to keep the tub from getting damaged. If I was doing this on a paid job. I would now know to charge plenty more for the demo.
Thank you! Watching your video because I had a contractor telling me I have to remove my tub I'm keeping to remove the shower tiles. Obviously he is wrong.
Thank you for your video. I’m glad that someone was able to show me how to remove the tiles and save time. I like the idea of just cutting the section of the wall and removing it.
Definitely the way to go saving time and effort do it your way. You explaining is very good and you have helped me and I feel more confident in taking on what I have to do with my old bathtub that the grout is coming off and water has got behind the drywall. Thank you so much for your teaching and instruction.
I already know Shannon, your work is always good. But I do love me some before and after, take care I'll be waiting for the next vid. @@HouseImprovements
Amazing explanation and a very patient man. I wonder how do you check if there is any electric wire behind before you use the little saw. Maybe it was explained and I missed it 🤦🏽♀️. This video encouraged me enough to go and redo my bathroom…. But can you just throw the debris on regular garbage day? What if i want to get rid of my tub, can I just leave it by the curve 😳
There is no fool proof way of knowing for sure about wires so you have to cut with caution and just deep enough to cut the drywall. You could also smash a hole at each stud bay so you can see inside at the height you are cutting. This debris will be too heavy for regular garbage bins. Many cities have companies who will make land fill runs to get rid of people demo garbage for a fee.
That was getting this shower through until this full reno. Window size was changed last fall. check that out here:ua-cam.com/video/oQSxqLwARzE/v-deo.html
Thanks so much for the informative video. And thanks SO much for not adding loud, screaming, guitar music when you're talking and even louder when you're not! For some reason, some really talented contractor guys think it's really important to fill every space with head-banging music. If I want to go to a rock concert, I don't click on a home improvement video!
I liked how you showed two different sides and how to take off a whole sheet. So the side you were saving the tub. That might be what I’m doing. Um, so I’m guessing that saves the drywall as well? Now if you save the drywall also would I just use that same way above the tile on the top part of it and just take off the backer board with only the tile where I don’t have to redo the drywall? Or should I take out the backer board and the drywall that’s around above the shower and just gut out that whole area inside the shower only??
I always enjoy watching your videos Shannon! They are great for the DIY'r like myself. I recently subscribed to your videos so I can now see all of them right from my email...FANTASTIC !!!
Question. If I’m working around the faucet area only trying to replace an old bathroom faucet with new occ valve, so I still need to caulk around the edge of the entire tiles or just the tiles itself?
That is why I would do by myself. Most Handymen did not care any damages on the wood stubs behind the cement boards. There are four screws on the cement board, but he pulled out any way.
Love your explanations Shannon. They had tiled the entire bathroom up to 4 ft. all the way around the bathroom. So right now I'm assuming to just cut out the drywall is the fastest. easiest AND least messy way to remove the tile. So then is there a video about the butt joint that is painted on the old drywall, versus the new drywall. How to make the joint not look like a hump horizontally along the wall? Thanks for the time you put into these videos.
I wish my bathroom tile was this easy. Mine goes up to ceiling and on the ceiling in the tub area. I doubt the drywall would come off as easy, mine was done by my Italian dad who would have way more screws than that. Good pointers though, I am still debating if I want to tackle this large project.
Thanks for this great video. One question. I want to remove the titles from walking shower and replace them with new titles. do I need to replace the board as well or can I just remove the title and use the existing board?
if its over cement board you may have a chance of not damaging the cement board too much but in most cases you will need to remove the wall surface right to the studs
I have to thank you for your video. It really helped me with my very first bathroom project. It saved me a lot of time and physical pain using the cutout method. I do have a question though. I'm doing another bathroom and unfortunately it has tile on the ceiling. Yeah, don't ask me what the previous owner was thinking. Any suggestions on how to remove them without killing my neck? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to have to try and cut them out as well. The previous owner has the small 4x4 tiles on the shower ceiling and approximately four feet high all around the bathroom. WTH!?
depends on the water proofing system you want to use. We can assist you more if you come to the forum with questions. www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Thanks for the video! It's funny as we're about to tear out a shower and I was thinking "there can't be anyway to save the cement board"...and sure enough...nope, just rip it out. Grout question: People talk about "Power Grout" brand (?) for water resistance, but other people say you just add an additive to your grout and it does the same thing. Thoughts? Tile question: Do you always want to use porcelain tile in a shower, not ceramic, since porcelain is much denser/water resistant? Can you tell by look and feel when you pick up a tile whether it's one or the other?
Ceramic tiles in a shower should be no problem as long as you have a good water proofing to start with which you should anyways. I prefer Mapei Flexcolor CQ grout. it is superior IMO
Thanks for the videos, very helpful. I installed a steel bathtub and I ran a 2x4 the length of the tub at the underside of the tub lip with a large bead of sealant and set it. They say to put screws at each stud, what is the propose of that, the tub weighs 130lbs. If anything won’t the screws squeak against the top edge when you step into it? Just think it’s overkill. Does anyone think that it’s a must thing to do. Thanks!
It can but you risk popping the drywall screws on the other side of the wall as well because the metal studs will flex and twist easier than wood. We can help more in the forum if you have more questions.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Tile should not be installed directly over drywall in a shower and even if it was you will damage it pretty good removing the tiles and it will most likely be mouldy as well.
usually removing the tiles from the drywall to leave it in place really damages the drywall and most times its not even repairable because of large chunks coming out of it.
If the tiles were well installed it is way to much work to remove the tiles and clean up the backer board to a point where you could tile over it again
This is a good diy video for simple cheap tile removal on thin backer. Anyone should be able to do this. When you get to a 30 year old professionally installed tub surround with 4" tiles set in 1-1/2" mud base over metal lathe none of this is going to help. Just grab a sledge hammer and go to town. And it's going to take a few hours.
Is removing the drywall mandatory? I have to remove some tile to replace the shower base but I'd like to avoid taking down a whole wall section if I can
I really love that this video shows a lot of things that can be difficult! I really can’t stand watching tutorials where it all goes smooth. Then you try it and everything in the world goes wrong lol.

Thank you so much! I've just started demolition on my shower, watched your video, bought a pry bar, and it's already a lot easier.
Thanks for sharing, I was smashing every tile off until I got tired and came here to see how to do it properly

I love how detailed your videos are and the videographer and editing are excellent. Makes it really clear and easy to watch and learn. Thank you!!!
Thanks! 👍
Buy cheap $1.50 shower curtain from Walmart. I used it to line the tub and then I just bunch it up and throw it away with the tile.
I have learned so much from watching your videos. So much so, I am now in the process of buying a home that needs some remodeling and repairs. While I am not at the level you are, I do feel my confidence in many projects is doable thanks to your videos.

Awesome in depth explainations, thanks Shannon. Looking forward to seeing how this project turns out! 🛠🎬
You did a great job of showing how much work it is to keep the tub from getting damaged. If I was doing this on a paid job. I would now know to charge plenty more for the demo.
Crow bar and hammer worked a treat. Another technique for well stuck on wall tiles.
Commenting just to get HouseImprovements back in my "suggested videos" list again and help improve this guys video visibility.
Thanks for that!
This is good presentation for the thin tiles, how about the 1950 style. that is 1.5" thick, with mortar and wire,?
Thank you! Watching your video because I had a contractor telling me I have to remove my tub I'm keeping to remove the shower tiles. Obviously he is wrong.
Thank you for this tutorial. It was very helpful and will make the job I’m doing much easier. 🙏🏼
Thank you for your video. I’m glad that someone was able to show me how to remove the tiles and save time. I like the idea of just cutting the section of the wall and removing it.

Id be lost without all of your videos!!

Ok, my starter row fought me and came out in small shards, but after that the big sheets took 5 minutes to remove. Thank you!!!!
Thanks for this excellent explanation.
Super helpful, as always with your videos!
It was a little difficult, but you made it look easy. Nice work!
I was just wondering when your next video would be. I’m building a second story deck right now, and I keep going back to your videos on decks.
We have a extended release time right now for the beginning of the year but we will be back to every two weeks soon.
Looking forward to seeing the build-up of this bathroom. I'm working my way up to gutting & redoing my bathrooms.
Keep watching,we have a whole lot of videos with this bathroom coming this year.
Thank you! Great timing for me! I'm about to start on my bathroom and I picked up some good ideas from you.
Thumbs up, gonna be a lot of work on this one.
Keep watching , you will love the transformation!

I find when I score the grout line first with a razor knife I get whole tiles out more often.
Maxid1 great tip
i know mastic gets a bad rap but those tiles were stuck even with that small notched trowel they used. great vid
You gave a lot of good information! Thanks!

Thank you. Very helpful.
Curious, why not use a roto zip
to cut the edges on the cement board?
cement board dust is bad for the lungs, root zip will have the air full of dust in no time
great video!! thank you very much for sharing; great details!!!!!!!!!!
You did a fantastic job demonstrating this renovation. It is a huge help. So thank you very much. God bless!

thanks!
Thank you !! Would have smashed each tile !
I assume it's recommended to go down to the studs when installing an acrylic wall kit? Not installing a wall kit over drywall?
Most wall kits go against the studs, but there are glue on sheets that glue over drywall or cement board
Thanks
Nice Work

I have tile by the plumbing coming off.. how can I replace this... ?
Wouldn't it be easier to use a multitool for this job and cut it out the same way? Thinking it would be safer too
What if the previous owner tiled right to the Sheetrock?
Thanks for your videos Shannon I am learning a lot
Is it best to use dry wall or concrete wall
depends on the water proofing system you want to use. We can assist you more if you come to the forum with questions. www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Nice video. Just would have used a 3 lb. hammer vs the toy hammer you used.👍
good work but by the time it took you to cut out sections I could have hammered out the tile pieces
And then you have a big mess to clean up
Do you have a video of how to replace the walls/tile?? My shower wall caved in from age and I’ve been out a shower for months!!!!
Should it be hardie backer behind tiles?
There are many options for behind tiles. If you come to the forum we can discuss the options.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Fml i start demo today on my bathroom
Good vidio
What sort of backing would one expect if the house was originally lathe board and plaster?
Likely lathe and plaster under the tiles.
Shannon would you use a rotorary hammer with a chisel bit?
7:12 - does that pull out method work if the backer board is screwed in and not nailed? thanks.
Usually a little tougher
How do you get the ones off around the the piping? Is it easier to just try to break the tile.
All the covers and knobs come off the fixtures and then the sheet will pull off.
Ah good ol iconic canadian yellow utility knife.
Thanks for the video! It's funny as we're about to tear out a shower and I was thinking "there can't be anyway to save the cement board"...and sure enough...nope, just rip it out.

what you did will work IMO.
A multi tool would make the cuts alot easier
How much would you charge for a job like this one
So the tiles won't be able to be removed and recycled (except for art projects)?
If they were installed well they will only smash off in pieces
I thankyou for the detailed video and I have another question . My house has metal studs so will this method still work?
It can but you risk popping the drywall screws on the other side of the wall as well because the metal studs will flex and twist easier than wood. We can help more in the forum if you have more questions.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Do you have to remove the dry wall to replace the tile?
Tile should not be installed directly over drywall in a shower and even if it was you will damage it pretty good removing the tiles and it will most likely be mouldy as well.
Looks like they had a regular window in there and changed it to a horizontal one
I wish I would have seen this before I totally destroyed one wall
Could you show how to get tiles off where there is no drywall edge to start from. eg wole bathroom is tiled wall to wall.
Smash off a couple tiles in the middle of wall and that will give you an edge to start prying tiles off.
Oscillating Multi tool much easier just hold a vacuum next to it bc it’s dusty
funny, I was searching to remove my tiles... and they are the exact same ones as in this video
If you wanted to keep the drywall under the tile could you re-tile right back over it?
usually removing the tiles from the drywall to leave it in place really damages the drywall and most times its not even repairable because of large chunks coming out of it.
what if it was installed properly.
like hardy board
This was cement backer board. watch at 6:20 mark
Would you ever just replace tile and save the backerboard or should you always replace that as well?

What kinda cost you looking at to demo drywall a shower again then tile it?
Would the process be any different if my bathroom walls are plaster? I just bought an older house and am hoping to renovate the bathroom myself
You won't get it apart in large pieces like this . With plaster smash off the tiles and plaster.
Is removing the drywall mandatory? I have to remove some tile to replace the shower base but I'd like to avoid taking down a whole wall section if I can
You can remove what you need to in some cases.
@@HouseImprovements thank you!
muito bom
I’m doing a shower demo soon. Can I save the drywall behind the tile? or does that have to be replaced?
It will be damaged beyond re use.
