When the Kite String Pops is the debut album of American sludge metal band Acid Bath. Released on August 8, 1994, it is considered an underground classic. The album's artwork is a self-portrait made by notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy while in prison awaiting execution.
Acid Bath was an American sludge metal band from Houma, Louisiana, active from 1991 to 1997. Acid Bath combined doom metal roots with influences from hardcore punk, death metal, gothic rock, and blues to create the band's unique sound.[1][2] In a Pit Magazine interview, vocalist Dax Riggs classified their sound as "death rock".[3] In another interview, guitarist Sammy Duet described their sound as "gothic hardcore".[4] They broke up after the death of bassist Audie Pitre in a traffic collision in January 1997.

When innocence ends…. The kite being symbolic of childhood naivety about the nature of the world and the good intentions that come with those misconceptions. “When the string pops” what are you left with? Like Sammy said, you’re still tethered to the earth and left to deal with the harsh reality that becomes more apparent as you grow older.
I think thats why they also used john gacy’s painting as the cover. Simply because that man robbed so many children of their innocence, naivety and life.

I went through 5 years of heroin addiction. The whole album is about that in my mind. Every song has its own meaning for my journey. When the kite string pops is when the pleasure stops and all the fantasy and joy is gone and you're left with pain and addiction and loss.
(The song "dope fiend" feels even more appropriate)
When you cook up heroin, you literally put it in a bath of acid.
Jezabel and Cassie eats cockroachea for me is about all the women I met who had turned to selling themselves or doing regrettable things to feed their habit. One girl I met was literally forced heroin by some piece of shit. She died a few years later.
I always thought of it as snapping and going fn postal!
Its interesting to me that a lot of people view the title from the perspective of the person holding the kite, to me it always meant to be detached from what is keeping you grounded. Like snapping from reality and being in a state of floating away, especially since the album covers a lot of very disturbing and depraved stuff. Always cool to see different interpretations of this kind of stuff!
The kyte string is the thread that holds your sanity intact during a halucinigenic experience. once its goes pop you end up like syd barret.

I agree with many of the comments interpretations.
I guess I tie the concept of the Kite strings 'popping' to the ending of a experience, either from good times ending or through realizations about people in ones own life. ...a Kite or a high flying off away into the sky from the person that was flying it after the strings pop.
concepts of being 'ungrounded' also are something I felt made sense.
like letting a Dog off a leash free to roam around and into the unknown or to be in a unfamiliar place without any previous reference as to how to navigate through it.

My theory is , it derives from the reference, "HIGH as a kite" You get so high that the string pops and you go so high you break through the fabric of reality and see things as they truly are. Too high and you die! :) I also heard through the grapevine it was about smoking click ems which are joints dip in PCP(bones of baby dolls). I [personally think dax was high as a kite on something watching this one episode of the dukes of hazard where a girl named mary lou was being messed with. Man,,, Goatwhore played Laredo a few times....2000 and 2019 i made those shows .....i was at Expo of the Extreme 97.....Sam Duet was with Soilent Green .....Dixie Collins,T- Roy.....didnt belive me but Merle Allin ,Sammy McBride belive me .....Mike Williams ,Jimmy Bower , Boyd Rice.....dont remember me ,but was just a fan who trekked from Laredo to Chicago......got Mortiss and his girlfriend stoned at the after party.

You know for a really long time I kept thinking "I really want Acid Bath to reunite" but now I realize, nah. It just would never be the same, without Audie no track has any backbone.
You can synthetically replace every single Acid Bath songs bass track with someone else
But it wouldn't be Acid Bath.
Audie's playing style was unlike no other bassist's.
Are there people who are maybe more technically skilled? Yes.
But Audie had uniqueness to his playing, plus the main bass line in The Mortician's Flame is a reference to Phantom of the Opera.
Everyone has their own opinions about this group
But I truly believe they were the greatest band formed out of the 90s and never got the proper attention they deserved until they reached media attention years after breakup
Partially due to Rotten Records still shackling them down even though being split up for over 25 years
But regardless. They left a legacy and a cult following like no other group has and that's what matters.
