Prince of Persia: Lost Crown, is one of the most polished, fun, engaging metrovanias of recent memory, perhaps even the last decade.
Even at #7 here, essentially a ranking that places it here within the top 30% of the genre, I’d argue it deserves an even higher rating.
Will go down as a cult classic for sure.

I miss back when metroidvanias werent all dark souls hybrids. I just want super metroid and castlevania SotN style games thay focus on exploration, ambiance and fun combat that isnt punishing. Im a dad that doesnt have tons of time to spend learning complex enemy patterns to squeak by victories like when i was a kid.

Why is Dead Cells considered a metroidvania game? I've never understood it. It's supposed to be about puzzles and gated progression, not a death loop.

    • @evanfont913
      @evanfont913 15 днів тому +5

So “metroidvania” is a term that gets thrown around a lot, for sure. Dead Cells is solidly in the roguish style of game overall. But it also definitely apes a lot from metroidvanias to the point where I wouldn’t get upset with people using the label. Obviously it’s a 2d side-scroller, but more importantly the procedurally generated maps have paths or routes that are gated off by abilities that you permanently unlock that you don’t have access to otherwise. Running up walls, unlocking the teleport runes, growing the bean stalk things, etc. These gradually gained abilities grant you access to entire areas you are not able to access otherwise, which comes straight out of the Metroid playbook.
The terms metroidvania and roguelike are really more of design philosophies than anything and in this regard, it fits into both rather nicely.

Metroidvanias weren't traditionally death loop style games. That hasn't been until games lile blasphemous started mixing metroidvania and souls like styles. Originally it was from games like metroid and symphony of the night, where you would explore, get stronger and learn abilities that would allow you to progress through previously unreachable areas due to lack of equipment or travel abilities like special bombs or double jump. I'm always on the lookout for good metroidvanias like record of lodoss war, metroid dread, etc but so many of them are souls like which I hate.

It’s so sad that so many people have never heard of Souldiers. Some of the best pixel art I've seen in a 2D metroidvania, 3 different playable classes, gorgeous graphics, great combat and soundtrack (both of which remind me of the Tales series), and it’s punishingly difficult. So much so that the devs had to literally patch the game early on to fix a lot of the problems that made the game so hard. Still very challenging though. Highly recommended.

I'm glad to heard one comment about the nice soldiers.
It was very, very good. It's problem was how hard were some normal enemies in the case of mage and archer classes.
Initially I was playing in easy with the mage and after his uptade I was playing in normal as hard as mage.
After complete the game with the mage (and unlock a lot of spells at lvl 30) I played again the game as archer and the gameplay change a lot to a MegaMan or Metroid.

No need to play them all, if you dont have money/time/patience just play few best of them and you wont miss much. Play Castlevania SOTN (absolute classic), Bloodstained (modern take on that gameplay), Ori and Guacamelee series (colorful, with great characters and graphical style), and Hollow knight (highly regarded by fans, and lets face it, sequel will never come).
If you like higher difficulty and soulslike combat- play Salt and sanctuary, Grime, Ender lillies and Blasphemous.
No need to play the rest, unless you are absolute maniac of this genre. I am, and still think they are mostly obsolete.

Record of Lodoss War - Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth - this is a simple metroidvania that respects your time and has a new game plus. All in all, you can beat this game is a matter of hours
Iconoclasts - gorgeous sprites, amazing music. Focuses more on puzzle platforming than combat so the traversal is super fun

Ender Lillies - the first one - love the art style and idea of game, but just couldn’t get into the whole idea of what is essentially a different on screen character that does your attacks for you.
Maybe I didn’t give it enough time. I know I did get stuck early in game, so they may be it. And I did try to play it right when I returned to gaming after decades away and only a casual player then with no idea what a metrovania was. Now it’s among my favorite genres.
So my question: is the first Ender Lilies that dropped on console a few years back worth it? I read some glowing reviews; others that didn’t love it.
    Thoughts anyone ?

Touhou Luna Nights looks a lot better in this short clip than I ever expected. I think I downloaded when it was in Gamepass but never got to it. Now wondering if I should buy it. Figured if anything Grime or Aeterna Noctis or even Afterimage would be ranked higher than this one.
    Makes me think.
Anyone else agree on positive reception to Touhou Luna Nights ?
    Should be ranked higher? Lower?

  • @mattpenix8438
    @mattpenix8438 21 день тому +1

    RE Touhou Luna Knights:
For Bullet Hell combat fans may I suggest The Knight Witch , another fantastic bullet hell with fun as hell combat and unique leveling up/ability system that at first glance I was skeptical about and typically not a fan of but really dig the uniqueness it brought to the game since this mechanic was really well implanted. Essentially you earn cards, each with a ranking amount and you have limited amount of space to insert abilities so you must chose which cards to insert into ability section. Have to use different cards, ie abilities, for different areas/enemies, etc.. that gives this game a bit of metrovania-ish vibes but it’s definitely a more fast, frantic, even frenetic and fun game. Art is badass, assuming like hand drawn comic book style stuff. For those who like the bullet hell-ness combat of Touhou Luna Nights, it might be worth checking out. I see it occasionally on sale but was easy worth its launch price to me. A no-brainer if on sale

Missed Dust the Elysian tail at launch as I wasn’t gaming then.
But it looks incredible. But also similar in style, art design, and combat to Odin sphere leifthrasir, which I’ve also never played but seems to always get rave reviews.
Has anyone played both and if so, are they similar? And if so, is one better than the other.
I realize Odin Sphere may not be a metrovania per se either but still interested in how the two stack up other than that one little factor. Ha

How hard is Aeterna Noctis for fans of hack n slash side scrollers like it within and adjacent to its genre?
I own it. Have yet to play it. But want to. Heard it was massive and can get incredibly frustrating and sometimes that’s not because it’s hard but, in parts, designed bad.
I’d consider myself fairly descent at these games. Best several but not nearly most of the challenging souls like games. I realize two totally different genres and you have to be a good platformer for Aeterna but trying to relay my experience and skill level when comes to challenging games. Hence the I’m solid part. No badass but not slouch either. If that helps …
I’m just curious as I want to start it eventually but have so many games backlogged, just not sure what to make of this one.

its extreeeeemely hard on the noctis mode. especially later in the game, but if it ends up being too much, you can always switch to es mode. it will give you quite a rush from time to time on noctis after finally getting past a harder platforming section or beating a nerve shredding boss encounter. easily one of my favorite metroidvanias, and one of the longest as well

Well I’ve only beaten Metroid Dread and Ori and the Blind Forest on this list.
Near the end of Hollow Knight (probably the best one) and gotten half way thru Super Metroid and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I’ve also played the demos (and enjoyed) Blasphemous and The Lost Crown.
    So not really qualified to rank them but I’ll go with;
    1) Hollow Knight

#13 )Per the PlayStation store, Touhou Luna Knights dropped in January this year, (‘24).
What is this release exactly? Xbox had this game on Gamepass for years and I believe it’s since been removed. I know because I downloaded it but never got around to playiing it and after seeing this clip I wished I had. Did Xbox have exclusive rights? Was this an ID@Xbox title? (Is it in fact even removed from Gamepass as of this comment post?
Is this recently released PS5 version a follow up? Remaster? Re-release. Maybe a prequel or sequel I was unaware about? Is there new, different or somehow more content than Xbox GamePass version.
Or did it simply port to PlayStation late?
Anyone a fan and know what’s happening here?

If you keep such a game on quick resume, Xbox will often think you’ve already bought or paid for rights to play and if won’t check. Or, if you’re not hooked up to the internet at time of play time, but were when last played and it’s now on quick resume, sometimes you can play a game for a bit after it leaves the service.
I mean, if anyone from Xbox reads this, I’m sure I’m wrong and have no idea what I’m talking about and just talking bullsthink, so don’t pay attention.

    Goods:
    - Salt & Sanctuary is the GOAT. I agree. It's also my favorite game of all-time.
    - Aria of Sorrow is better than Symphony of the Night. I agree.
    Bads:
    - I remember Metroid Dread was higher than Hollow Knight last time you did this list, now it's much lower.
    - Ender Lilies what the hell?

For the umpteenth time, the list of the best metroidvanias has not changed. It’s not surprising, because metroidvanias are the same, and there aren’t many new really high-quality and impressive metroidvanias appearing. It's a shame, I would like to see more quality Metroidvanias.

@@A-Dubs398A good fairy tale story for naive people with a similar opinion about the “peak” of the genre. I can totally play The last faith, coming out soon Nine sols, Geshtalt steam & cinder. Nothing worse. Ender lilies By the way, not a bad game, but very far from a high-quality metroidvania. It's more of an action platformer than a full-fledged Metroidvania. Games have room to grow and develop. In metroidvanias there might be something new and high quality. But unfortunately there are a lot of mediocre clones or very simple Metroidvanias from developers who are just starting out on the development path.

I think most of the good metroidvania's have already been shown and I think we're just looking in hopes to find a new metroidvania to play but I think we are just in the waiting period for new metroidvania's to be released.
A good metroidvania consists of these 3 things:
      1. A good map to traverse and explore with plenty of areas players want to backtrack to once more abilities have been unlocked
      2. Good and satisfying combat with steady upgrades
      3. Solid movement and platforming
(maybe 4th but not 100% required is a good story and lore definitely adds a personal connection to the game)
If all 3 of these are there then that's usually a good indicator of a good metroidvania. Unfortunately, some metroidvania games only get 1 or 2 of these things correctly with the other aspect being more to be desired. There's another aspect that can be split which s the classic style combat where the primary attack key is a single strike like SoTN and the movement and attacks feel weightier or the newer quicker combat like Hollow Knight where the movement and attacks feel fast and lighter. Heavy vs Light characters is another way to put it. I personally like the oldschool classic metroidvania's so I tend to gravitate towards those.
If you're into the oldschool metroidvania style these are the current ones I have wishlisted:
      - Blade Chimera
      - Beyond the Ice Palace 2 (most I'm looking forward to)
      - Obsidian Legion
      - Mandragora
      - Aeterna Lucis (mainly hard platforming with the first one I played)
      - Grime 2
Newer generation metroidvania (though you probably know all of them by now):
      - Silksong
      - Crowsworn
      - Nine Sol
      - Voidwrought
      - Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus
      - Altered Alma
At this point we're just in the waiting period but I'm looking forward to a lot of those games so I think we're in for a treat once they're released.
