How China Corrupted the World Health Organization's Response to COVID-19

- By putting out questionable guidance and whitewashing the Chinese government's handling of the crisis, the WHO destroyed much of its credibility, damaged the field of public health, and failed to contain the pandemic.

President Donald Trump, who put a hold on WHO funding yesterday, isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting COVID-19. But there's no doubt that the WHO's response destroyed much of its credibility, damaged the field of public health, and failed to contain the pandemic.
The WHO's actions in response to COVID-19, in part, stemmed from its overly deferential stance towards China, which is its second-biggest financial contributor among 194 member states.
"A phenomenal collective action by the people of China to this response" is how Bruce Aylward, head of the joint WHO-China mission, described China's handling of the outbreak on February 25, 2020, a day after WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised China's "rapid response," which he claimed "changed the course of this epidemic."
The WHO also praised China for releasing the virus's genome while neglecting to mention that it took them at least 17 days to do so. It didn't report human-to-human transmission until late January-even though Chinese doctors suspected it at least a month earlier. Although the extreme lockdown of Wuhan likely saved thousands of lives, WHO scientists weren't allowed into Wuhan until 3 weeks after the outbreak first came to light, leaving open many questions about measures the government took in the interim. Meanwhile, the WHO praised the country for its supposed openness.
"China took action at the epicenter, and that helped prevent the spread to other provinces and the rest of the world," Ghebreyesus said on February 15.
"As China has shown, this does not need to be a pandemic if we take action," WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan said on February 28.
As the virus continued spreading across Europe and reached America, the WHO recommended "no interference with international travel."
One country that ignored this advice was Taiwan, which also warned the WHO that it suspected that the virus was spreading through human-to-human transmission, yet was ignored. Taiwan, which has one of the lowest rates of known COVID-19 infections per capita, was prevented from joining the WHO as a member country in 2015 by China, which refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's independence.
In late March, World Health Organization epidemiologist Bruce Aylward declined to answer a Hong Kong reporter's question about Taiwan-or even acknowledge its existence.
As Taiwan was distributing face masks to its citizens, the WHO was advising the rest of the world that they were unnecessary-and initially, the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Surgeon General followed its lead.
But health experts pointed to mounting evidence that masks can help slow the spread of respiratory disease, especially among asymptomatic carriers, a population that the WHO maintains is virtually nonexistent despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
In mid-February, the WHO trumpeted good news from China, claiming confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19 had declined, ignoring evidence that it may have been a statistical anomaly. U.S. intelligence, meanwhile, believes that China has entirely misrepresented both case numbers and death tolls, according to Bloomberg News.
Finally on March 11, after Italy was already in full national lockdown with more than 10,000 cases, the WHO finally acknowledged the true magnitude of the crisis, declaring a global pandemic.
As the death toll climbs above 100,000, the global economy remains in crisis, and billions of lives are disrupted, it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job, the nightmare we're living through might not have happened at all.

Although they advised about the danger of the pandemic pretty late and didn't recommended some important measures, it is surprising to hear Trump blaming the WHO while all the rest of countries in the Americas declared a full quarantine at the exact moment it was declared a pandemic. A little late, some others wasted more time, likie Ecuador, and now are suffering, while others like Colombia have evaded a possibility of having even more cases than Italy and have managed to deal in an stable way with the pandemic.

1. Coronavirus was made in a lab.
2. The Chinese government knew about this lab and their studies. Because in china nothing is done without the government using people as sock puppets.
3. China should have told WHO the second it came out considering they where studying it.
4. China lied as they have done many times before and they will continue to do for years and years to come. About everything death count infection rates death rate so on and so fourth.
5. The world health organization shouldnt have down played this with how serious chinas delayed response was.
6. The world health organization spent the valuable time that the countries around the world needed to protect themselves all while telling people this wasnt a health emergency.
The delayed response from across the world was directly related to the grossly incompetence of the world health organization. They are supposed to help the world see and recognize threats but they didnt do that because china pushed them around most likely with money.

The loss of the US financial support is only half of the problem that WHO is undertaking. The international integrity and respect it is losing, under the current leadership, will bring the organisation down.
WHO must change leadership and course to get back to what it was set up to do.

Learn history will you. 1971 the member states of the United Nations officially ratify China as the one Chinese state (which included Taiwan), the UN WHO member states then voted in 1972 to adopt that resolution as well. The member states includes the USA and many other European countries so the hypocrisy of them to call out the WHO on Taiwan when it's their own resolution that prevents the WHO legally from recognizing and discussing Taiwan as a separate country from China...

Well, the status of Taiwan is more complicated.
When the Chinese Civil War was won by the communists, the nationalist government of The Republic of China ran to Taiwan with the navy and airforce. The communists couldn't take the island and the nationalists set a government in exile in Taipei, which became democratic in the recent decades. This government in exile claims to be the only true and legitimate government of all of China to this day. But there is a problem: there can be only one China and as the Communist government is clearly extremely influent on the world stage it is quite hard to accept the Taipei government to take part separately in any international organisation.

Well, speaking as a citizen, it's a lot more complicated than that. Politics aren't my thing but I can say for certain that most people don't believe declaring that we're the true china will actually help our political situation. As for the government, it's split into two opposing parties, one of them suggests that Taiwan is an independent country "Taiwan", while the other (also the original one that fled to Taiwan) leans more toward negotiations with the CCP

He rightfully should have been able to rely on them to not screw that up. You can't expect him to literally see the future and preempt the one thing that's going to go wrong.
Also, my observations of case rates and actions by different nations show a much higher correlation between having real borders that can be shut down than having exemplary testing capabilities, though that is obviously an key part of a successful defense.
All that said, I think there's only a select few times where the government can do a better job than the free market, so I see almost any decision to exclude the private sector as a mistake. The CDC really should have had their shit together though.

WHO: Won't Get Fooled Again
If we actually look at hard facts, what the guy did was clearly not in support of China politically but actually in support of Taiwan. Why? Because if he simply stuck to the cold hard facts, the answer would be: Taiwan is not a country, it is a province of China and WHO organisation is a sub-entity of the UN, which means only legal countries can be members, something which Taiwan clearly is not. So unless Taiwan can take a seat in the UN, they will never be able to enter WHO.
So you want to argue why Taiwan isn't a country, well, please look into their OWN constitution and their ACTUAL name: Republic of China, if you people actually knew any bit of history, you would know that CHINA has been at civil war between Republic of China (admin now in Taiwan) and People's Republic of China (admin now in Beijing) since at least WWII period and IS still at war. There has never been a formal resolution between the two parties involved period. The two parties had been fighting for representation for all of China and until the later of the last century RoC had representation rights, but now currently PRoC has the representation rights, if Taiwan were to declare independence, they would first have to dissolve RoC constitution and RoC as a nation and declare Taiwan independence (which in effect turn them into an invading force), which would NEVER happen without them shredding away cold war and going right into HOT war.
