  • Coming up next, a sit down with one of my favorite artists ever Huey Lewis... about one of the best songs of the mid-80s: Hip to Be Square. I swear I've never met anyone who doesn’t love this guy…Turns out Huey was writing a fun little song about leaving rebellion behind to conform to a more traditional lifestyle… Not selling out but buying in. Then years later this happy-go-lucky 80s classic was stolen by a notorious serial killer! Then on another hit from Huey's record, I know What I like: everyone was in awe with the amazing backing vocals. Come to find out it was the offensive line and a quarterback from an NFL team…For about 5 years in the 80s, Huey Lewis and the News were as big as anybody in music. Right there with Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince Duran Duran, and the Police, and they were just a bunch of regular guys. They had 11 top 10 hits in 4 years but then everything changed because of a horrible disease. He hasn’t been able to tour, but in the end, they are still the only news source I trust. Find out why next on Professor of Rock.

It’s Time for another edition from our series Revelations where legendary artists take us for a deep dive into their best songs and you get insight that only insiders get…Today we are stepping into the year 1986 when a man named Huey Lewis and his band of brothers named the News were about to follow up their first #1 hit.. the Power of Love. Really you think about it… from 1984 to 1987 Huey was one of the biggest stars in music.
Sports was one of the biggest records of music’s best year.. 1984. It went to #1 supported by so many hits like I Want A New Drug. The Heart of Rock and Roll… Heart and Soul and if this is It all hitting the top 10 with iconic videos that took over MTV, then in 1985 they had two brilliant songs support the pop culture phenomenon known as Back to the Future in the Power of Love and Back in Time.. and then in 86 they release FORE, that in some respects, was even bigger than Sports containing 5 top 10 hits including the #1s Jacob’s Ladder and Stuck with You.
Doing it All For My Baby, I Know What I Like, and today’s song feature Hip to Be Square. Hip to Be Square barely missed #1… held out of the top spot by two songs. Bon Jovi’s You Give Love a Bad Name and Peter Cetera’s duet with Amy Grant The Next Time I Fall, which reigned at numero uno…in early December of 1986 but Huey and his News would have the last laugh as Hip To Be Square would a huge resurgence in the 21st century after being prominently featured in the 2000 cult film American Psycho starring Christian Bale as notorious serial killer Patrick Bateman.
Such a quotable line. Ya like Huey Lewis and The News.. The answer to that question is a resounding yes… I think I’ve mentioned this before, I’ve never met someone who doesn’t like Huey Lewis and the news. Never.

My mom was about to turn 70, and was battling cancer. I wanted to make her birthday extra special, and emailed her favorite musicians and authors. Huey Lewis was the only one to respond, with a signed photo that said "You're still just a kid! Huey" I think it was her favorite thing. She passed in April, so it makes me smile that she got a sweet note from her guy before she passed. 💜

I worked with Huey Lewis at two shows. He and his band were the finest, most professional and respectful bunch I have ever known. He didn't deserve what happened to him, but he has remained upbeat and kind. I went to Tamalpais High, where the album cover for Fore was shot. Two of Huey's bandmates were seniors there when I was a freshman. My brother jammed with them. The best guys on the planet.

In 1986, I was disappointed to learn that a show in Columbia, SC, was sold out. However, shortly before that date, a few seats opened up behind the stage and I was able to get a few tickets so some friends and I got to go. It was only my second concert after joining the Air Force (third overall.) When he wasn't singing, he turned around and got all of us sitting behind the stage all riled up. I really appreciated that he didn't forget about us. Because of that, that concert has been one of my favorite concerts I had ever attended.

When you watch the full documentary on the making of the video/song for 'We Are the World', it's obvious that Huey was intimidated as hell to be standing right near Steve Perry (among other great singers) while they were singing their parts. Who wouldn't be? But Huey came through anyway, and nailed his part, a true pro. One of the best concerts I ever saw was Huey Lewis and the News, and I'll always remember the announcement at the end of the concert--"I'm Huey Lewis, and you've just heard the News!"

Not surprised you both said this because Even as a Canadian I thought Loverboy was overrated even in our own country & how they broke through into the United States & sold as many records world wide baffles me to this day. Especially when we have imo much more talented Canadian acts like April Wine & Tragically Hip, Tom Cochrane etc who never got the air play nor the record sales that Loverboy got south of 49th parallel. One of life's cruel realities I guess. In fact Paul Dean the guitarist for Loverboy was in another Canadian band with Kenny Shields & Streetheart. Imo Streetheart was still the better band even after Paul Dean had left Streetheart to join Mike Reno to form Loverboy. Needless to say they (Loverboy) are not my cup of tea nor a favorite of mine. To each their own I guess.

One great time from way back... in the second half of the 1990s, I traveled a bit for work. One of the places I went fairly often was San Diego. We'd stay on Shelter Island in the hotel Humphrey's Half Moon Inn, which was right next door to an amphitheater. Most days, we'd get in from work, go out to the pool, have a few beers, and relax for a bit. When we were lucky, there'd be a band playing at the amphitheater next door. One night when we came in, we went out to the pool, and guess who was playing next door... Huey Lewis and the News. That was a pretty great night... great San Diego weather, sitting around a table with friends, having a few beers, and listening to Huey Lewis and the News live. It doesn't get much better than that :)

I loved Huey Lewis and The News, they were really big during my high school years. One of the things I liked about that group is that unlike so many groups of that time, they were not boozing, drugging and bashing hotel rooms and thus their group didn't have the all too common melt down that so many groups of that time had. Huey was all business and approached the whole thing with a professional and serious attitude. God bless you Huey, you are the greatest!

I lived in the Bay Area during the 80s and Huey Lewis and the News would occasionally sing the National Anthem for the home opener of either the Giants or the A's. One year, we were late getting to the A's game and ran into the band when they came out of a doorway after they had finished the anthem. My friend froze in front of them while mumbling, "that's Huey Lewis and the News". I was yelling at him to hurry up or we were going to miss the top of the first inning. While I was a big fan of the band, the A's were opening against the Twins (my favorite team) so my priorities were different.
