      You “don’t need them” but if you do a crap load of in town driving, making lots of stops, wait until the last second to brake and are hard on them they may help with warping. If you are always warping your rotors because of how you drive they may help. But in most cases they’re more used for braking from high speeds on performance cars. And no they aren’t a gimmick like the previous comment said. I’ve been a part of the racing community for over 20 years. The people that think they’re a gimmick have never had to stop from really high speeds and never felt brake fade.

      @@666dynomax Yes I am aware they aren’t “required” for a regular daily driver car. But that doesn’t make them a gimmick like you previously said. I’ve yet to warp a set of cross drilled and slotted rotors on my daily driver in the three years they’ve been on that car. I warped the factory smooth rotors in less than a year had them turned and warped them again in less than a year. After that they weren’t thick enough to turn again so I went with cross drilled and slotted rotors. They only cost me a like $150 more for the full set with carbon fiber reinforced ceramic pads on rock auto’s website. Now if you drive really slow and always start braking far out and never really heat up your brakes then you’re better off going smooth. Your pads will last a little longer going smooth. But for extra cash I deliver food and groceries so I’m always on the go in town. Multiple stop lights and I drive fast and am hard on my brakes also. So for me cross drilled and slotted ended up saving me money in the long run even with my pads needing to be replaced a little sooner. So whether a person needs them or not depends more on how they drive.

    True... I drive spiritedly at times, and I do notice how my heavy suv feels like, when braking suddenly in extreme heat. Its' effectiveness deminish drastically with the stock rotor and secondly my vehicle is heavy so it needs distance to be effective otherwise ill have to swerve to the side to avoid front collision. Hence why I opted for the slotted and ventilated brake rotor for the front as that's where all the brake force is apply heavily. The rear, I left it in stock since it doesn't required a lot of brake force and all the weight shifts to the front more than the rear. In conjested traffic none of that matter. Its at high speed where braking in emergency is critical and the shorter the distance it take to stop a heavy vehicle the better off you will not smash into the vehicle in front especially those that cuts off other driver in high speed.

    It's important to say that slotted rotors will grind you break pads down more quickly. Its debated, but enough people say that it does. For large trucks and haulers, they make sense. For small cars you just drive daily, they are better off with just plain rotors.

    • @FirstPlaceAutoParts
      @FirstPlaceAutoParts  2 роки тому +9

      A valid point and yes, slotted rotors can be more aggressive when it comes to brake pad wear. Something to think about and weigh the pro's and con's when deciding what is right for your your application. For towing, the drilled and slotted rotors have made a difference as a reduction in brake fade due to heat build up when hauling a load or pulling a heavy trailer with long down hills. Slotted & traditional non-slotted rotors each have their place and each vehicle owner should weigh the cost and benifits vs. their needs and wants before making a switch

      As somebody who put a set on jetta drilled an slotted made a hell of a difference stopped more quickly an the braking felt more linear not as much initial bite aka ceramic pads but slowed the car faster then the semi metallics

    • @xXAsunaxKiritoXx
      @xXAsunaxKiritoXx 6 місяців тому +1

      @@nickguerra1905 What the hell.
      The initial bite on drilled and slotted rotors will always be less no mater the pad type. You got less Surface area for the pads to grab on after all. But they do have better brake fade resistance from the drills cooling down the rotors faster on constant braking.
      Ive always run Drill and slotted combo with semi metalics on all my cars if possible just to aid the initial bite. But even so, Stock brakes have their limits even with oem plus pad and rotor upgrades.
      Like my mk3 supra for example, 3700lb brick came stock with Single piston calipers on the fronts and still struggles with brake fade with these minor upgrades. I have the tires that can grip but the calipers cant put down enough clamping force to stop them, I cant even lock the fronts unless im on the rain.
      Brake feel is linear all the way till I hit fade then it drops off.
      Last portion of your comment made no sense. How is initial bite relevent to ceramic pads with drill and slotted rotors? and how does it out perform semi metalic which haves better friction properties than ceramic and organic. What pads are we even running on stock setup before moving to drilled and slotted. NOTHING MAKES SENSE WTF

    one thing to mention is the proper direction to install the slot/drilled rotors. the veins should give it away..if they're perpendicular, slots can go in any direction..but if they're exit is angled, they are specific (a screw driver helps determine which type you have)

    The slots pointing forward, help keep the brake pads wearing flat and ejecting the hot brake dust outward away from the caliper by centrifugal force. That brake dust is hot enough to stick to steel , so I would say it makes a big difference in the way the direction of the slots are pointing..?

    • @RBFR01
      @RBFR01 Рік тому +5

      nothing, drilling the rotor ads 0 performance and actually weakens the rotor. The reason drilling the rotor came about was because the brake pad compound used to be different and produced a gas and a good way to let that gas escape was to drill holes in the rotor. Car manufactures still do this today as it looks "sporty" but in reality is stupid. Slotted rotors are the best and the only way to go because the slots shave off a very thin layer off the brake pad keeping it clean, reducing heat build up and modern brake pads don't produce gas only brake dust. Slotted and Vented is the best. Please note a slotted rotor will ware the brake pad out faster.

    • @GranPuba

    Motorcycle brake rotors are all drilled. They used to be plain right up to the late 80s, then they're almost universally drilled and floated, but never slotted. About 15 years ago we also started seeing petal or wave rotors. Maybe that's why even sintered brake pads don't last beyond 15000-20000km of normal riding.
