  • For 2018, Haibike is expanding their line and offering some lower priced options which is very exciting for people who appreciate their style and quality but are on a fixed budget. I met with Ken Miner, Director of Sales, to explore some of their flagship models. Haibike moved their North America headquarters from Simi Valley, California to Denver, Colorado in March 2017 and have since been working on some Class 1, 2, 3, legislation with Governor John Hickenlooper to make it easier to ride electric mountain bikes on trails.
    So, it used to be that Haibike SDURO models always used the Yamaha drive system and the XDURO models were using Bosch but starting in 2018, they have adjusted things so you may see both drive systems on both lines. In short, SDURO is the more affordable line now and XDURO is more performance oriented and high cost. They say it’s a geometry focused nomenclature vs. motor brand nomenclature. Think “extreme” when you think about XDURO and “sporty” when you think about SDURO.
    The first model we checked out was the SDURO FullLife with 150 mm travel using the Bosch PowerPack step-in battery priced at $4,500 which has a shorter top tube and may be geared towards women a bit since they tend to have shorter arms than guys… but guys can still enjoy this model if they want a more upright body position.
    Next, we looked at the SDURO FullSeven 9.0 which is priced at $5,400 and features the Bosch PowerTube 500 battery. What’s really unique here is that Haibike has developed a rail system above for use with bottle cages or other accessories that can also support a second battery mount for up to 1,000 watt hours of capacity! I was told that Bosch is waiting for UL listing on the PowerTube so we won’t see the in-tube models from Haibike until around August of 2018.
    A bit later, we looked at the SDURO Radius Tour model which uses 20” wheels and is more of a compact design using the Yamaha drive system and battery. They developed this for commuting in the city and have special folding metal pedals. Also, the headset has a swiveling design so you can turn the handle bar to the side and make the bike lay flat on its side or fit easier against other bikes without taking up so much room. This electric bike is priced at $3,000 and Ken told me it is very balanced, has lights, and plastic fenders.
    At this point in our discussion, Ken and I walked over to the XDURO line which are using longer travel suspension in 2018. The first model was the AllMtn 10.0 which offers 150 mm travel and uses the more powerful Yamaha PWX drive system which offers up to 95 Newton meters of torque, has a lower cadence threshold (for faster starts) and a higher supported cadence up to 120 RPM vs. just 120 with the original Yamaha PW. There’s also a new stem display which is a bit more compact, rugged, and stealthy looking. This model is priced at $6,400 and should be available in early 2018.
    A bit later, Ken showed me the latest Haibike FatSix 8.0 which uses the older Yamaha PW motor system which offers 80 Nm of torque and a more limited cadence range. This electric fat bike is priced at $3,700 and offers a derailleur hanger so you could potentially add a second chainring up front for more gearing choice.
    Towards the end, we looked at the XDURO Nduro 8.5 model with 180 mm travel which is more of an enduro bike (for some climbing and downhill performance). This model uses the Bosch CX motor system with up to 75 Nm of torque and very fast starts and full 120 RPM pedal support. This is their mountain-specific motor model, the Nduro 8.5 is priced at $5,200. One of the cool things about Haibike is that they offer four frame sizes for almost all of their different models. Ken mentioned that in 2018 Haibike is going to offer a $4,000 hardtail carbon fiber electric mountain bike! The final model that we actually looked at in person was the XDURO DwnHll 10.5 with 200 mm suspension travel for $6,700. The idea is that you can pedal this up mountains and then enjoy downhill riding in areas that don’t have lifts or helicopter access. The Downhill model is using the Bosch Performance Line CX motor. Most of their mountain bikes are coming with the Bosch Purion display and have EMTB mode enabled.
    At the end, Ken showed me their “innovation award winner” ebike called the XDURO AllMtn 8.0 which offers 150 mm travel, full suspension, a 20 speed drivetrain, Yamaha PWX motor priced at $5,000. I also mentioned their new value-priced model which is $2,200 vs. the cheapest model in 2017 being $2,600. This new e-bike is called the SDURO Cross with more of an urban setup that uses 700c wheels.

    Wow! The bikes get better and better. Hiding the battery better in the downtube is big plus and being able to use two batteries for longer range is also a big plus. Plus the color display to indicate mode is nice. I think I am going to have to buy one of these.

    THANK YOU COURT! Excellent review with double thumbs up! Haibike is really innovative and I love the new Powertube and Yamaha PW-X series motors with even more N/M of torque.
    A little surprised they have not introduced the Nyon interface on the Bosch side to the USA.!!??

    I like the idea of built-in plus external batteries so, I can just take out and charge the latter. And when I slot in the external it will just charge the built-in battery.

  • @ForbinColossus

    @3:35 "Power tube" in line battery is an 'about-face' from what Haibike's (winora) CEO said last year - that they did not believe in "hiding the battery" as heard here:
    ua-cam.com/video/McGUO_JxJrs/v-deo.htmlm34s
    I salute Haibike's change of heart b/c most of us prefer the bulky battery blend in rather than stand out - and Haibike's new design solves that bottle cage deficit you rightly point out.

      I know, right?! It's like Apple with their magnetic chargers or having a headphone jack, or wireless charging etc. the marketing message changes as market demands become clear... I feel like many times companies choose to present a strong confident message (even if it's a bit off) rather than admit the product could be improved. Politicians and many other types of people do the same thing, it's frustrating, but at least you caught it ;)

    • @ForbinColossus
      @ForbinColossus 6 років тому +1

      I think change of mind is healthy; real life is more like sailing - one must adjust - or drown in stubborness...Haibike saw the competition offering slender downtubes so their designers head for that direction. Not for nothing, but cheaper bikes have bulkier, more visible batteries. Haibike is a premium brand so they better differentiate. It's just so funny how marketing can prettify an argument for one approach over another and then sell the advantage so strongly the opposite way

  • @ForbinColossus
    @ForbinColossus 6 років тому +3

    Court, thanks for posting - wish it was an entire hour. Haibike is first choice in what I want to buy - their aesthetics & build quality are best, IMHO...@7:51 is the new Yamaha display for PWX removable like Bosch Intuvia ? It looks like it requires tools, rather than clicking in and out.
    Also, the 120 rpm/cadence is only is highest assist (turbo) mode according to their site:
    global.yamaha-motor.com/business/e-bike-systems/pw-x/drive-unit/

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I was in the highest level of assist when trying to reach 120 RPM, it felt just slightly better than the PW in terms of cadence. Still not as fast as Bosch Performance or the new Shimano E8000 motor in my opinion... but getting better :) and yeah, I think the display panel requires tools to get off, no quick release clip type of thing. I have another video with Yamaha where they will talk more about it coming soon :)

    • @newschoolnerd
      @newschoolnerd 6 років тому

      Most of the bikes with PW-X will be Full Suspension eMTB's, which probably won't be so ideal for touring. I would check out the Haibike Trekking series if you want some good touring options.

      It's legal to ride pedal assist, only throttle's are illegal in NYC.

      I heard from people with pedal assist they ebikes were taking away

    • @newschoolnerd
      @newschoolnerd 6 років тому

      Can you have them contact me? I have yet to hear this and the Mayor has said several times that pedal assist is okay. I wonder if the bike also has a throttle, as that would not be allowed according to the NYC law. That being said we have been working on making the law more clear, but I'm pretty sure we're not going to see throttle legalized in NYC.

    • @zdenkorakitnican3199
      @zdenkorakitnican3199 6 років тому

      Nyc sucks. I'm not sure if I want to pay $2000 for a pedal assist , I would like to have a combo with throttle as I have a knee injury and can't really pedal for a long time.

    • @newschoolnerd
      @newschoolnerd 6 років тому

      I understand. We have been exploring how ADA comes into play for people like yourself with a legit injury. It might be something to consider. I will say that on a high level of assist you really don't have to work hard at all. Court actually has had some pretty bad knee problems as well.

    It’s dumb Yamaha won’t provide a walk mode. Apparently, they’ve never tried to push a 50lbs bike up an unrideable mountain side.

    Not sure if they are going the right way .. the bikes look like Electric Motor cycles .. seen a few integrated Motor and battery types smaller that these units and lighter with the add on of external batteries and think thats the way to go.. technology is progressing so fast we cant keep up with a Standard 😊

    does it recharge when you 're not pedaling?

    • @newschoolnerd
      @newschoolnerd 6 років тому

      This isn't possible by nature of the way the mid-drives work. It would require a lot of effort from the rider to pump any significant power back into the system.

    • @damnfail9316
      @damnfail9316 6 років тому

      thank you chris, i mean like copenhagen wheel or flykly, it generates electric to the battery. so it recharge maybe not a large amount. i mean when you on a slope and not pedaling it or you reverse the pedal recharge the battery.

    • @newschoolnerd
      @newschoolnerd 6 років тому

      I understand. It's not possible on a mid-drive as the rear cogs will just freewheel if trying to reverse the motor.

    You would think we're going on 2018 that they would do away with all the battery packs nor should they be integrated, but embedded in the upper tube and lower. It's not like we don't have the technology to make it possible. My personal opinion mid drives look ugly and bulky as Hell and not necessary for Urban/City commutes. And any bike over 3,500 should be carbon fiber

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  6 років тому

      Fair points, there are a few electric bikes with integrated batteries like you described, have you seen the Faraday Porteur? electricbikereview.com/brand/faraday/ the downside is not being able to remove it for charging and lifting as easily, and the pack tends to be lower capacity. Got some cool 2018 models with integrated batteries coming soon from Focus that I will post shortly

    The neglect of aesthetic perspective puts an early ebike leader in an awkward position in the market. Ugly! Scott, Specialized, Pivot and more way out front.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  6 років тому

      It's nice to have competition, Haibike has this angular aesthetic with sporty colors that makes them unique in my mind... but even seeing the Specialized Turbo early on caught my attention for how clean and integrated a system could be. Now we also have Focus coming in with their Bold Squared and Jam Squared that look great

    • @letni9506
      @letni9506 5 років тому

      I can't justify spending 5k on a MTB being a motorcyclist too.
      If I didn't have a motorbike i'd consider it but you can buy a mint second hand street triple which has high quality parts for the same as these high end bikes. So these just don't feel like value to me.
      2k maybe 2.5 is my personal limit for an ebike
