Long ago, when I was in the 10th grade, I was chosen to represent Lakes High School at.a special art camp at Ft. Warden. Of course, all of us kids were excited to be away from parents for a couple of weeks. Two other girls and I became friends and I proposed that we wait until after dark, when everyone had gone to sleep, to venture out and travel through one of the underground bunkers. We did just that. It was pitch black out as we made our way through and it was completely underground without any windows. I recall that we were walking sideways against the wall at one point and it seemed to be slightly curved. We could not see a thing and I jokingly mentioned that if there was a serial killer hiding in there, nobody would hear us scream. I was just kidding, but the girl directly behind me panicked so I had to calm her down by laughing even though her fear was palpable. I instructed her to hold the hand of the girl behind her and I took her hand and spoke confidently about how there has to be an exit coming. Just about as the girl behind me was about to lose it again, I could see a tiny rectangle of pale light to my right begin to appear. We had been rounding a very long curve. I told them the end was in sight and the relief made it hard to keep quiet, but I told them I had to make sure no one was waiting at the end to catch us. We made it through without being able to see a thing and no one caught us. That would have been some time in 1980-1981. I often wonder what became of those two girls.
Awesome story of exploring the old bunkers! I and my brothers spent a lot time exploring these bunkers with flashlights as kids. There are stories of some of them being haunted but I thankfully never saw any ghostly activity🤣🤣
@@DavesRvRepair Great childhood memories! That must have been back when kids were allowed to be independent and took more initiative. Some may say we were stupidly confident, but we were courageous back then. We did everything on our own.❤️🤘
@@xenotbbbeats7209 You’re absolutely right! Those were the days, good memories. Thanks for taking the time to comment on the video. I appreciate it.
One of my fondest memories was getting a camping spot at Fort Worden with one of my friends, waiting until well after dark, then hiking through the upper bunkers (with proper flashlights and even a night vision device). It was very eerie, even with flashlights, but very exciting to explore. There was a bit of wind so it always sounded like there was something hiding in the bushes following us, but we never spotted anything, it was just paranoia (hopefully!). I've been up there hundreds of times during the daylight in all sorts of weather (I grew up in PT and went for walks at Fort Worden at least 3 times a week for several years), but nothing matched being up there late at night until the sun came up in the morning.

🏰🌲📸 What an incredible adventure through Fort Worden State Park! Your tour of the Upper Bunkers was truly captivating, taking us on a historical journey. The beautiful forests, intriguing structures, and stunning views left us in awe. And that deer encounter was simply adorable! Thanks for sharing this gem with us, Dave! Can't wait for Part 2! 🦌👏
Thanks so much for your supportive feedback. It’s very encouraging and appreciated 😎👍
Great video Dave! Excellent photography and narration.
Thanks a lot Bryan for the great feedback. 🤩
Happy Sunday Dave. I hope you had a nice time with your father and family. It is quite a distance from Florida to Washington, so it says something about the size of the USA:) And it was nice to get a good look at Fort Worden. Some of the designs I recognise from old forts in Norway built at the same time (like Oscarsborg that I have made movies from). For an invading fleet at that time (before WWI) it would have been very difficult to knock out these positions. The throne and the stone were also cool, but not easy to understand:) So looking forward to the next part! All the best, Ant

Son, you have way more energy than I have, have had, or will ever have. Thanks to your videos, I can see all the beauty of that area without walking it myself. It was great to see you again. Wish I had more time this trip to spend with everyone. Love you big time. Keep up the good work. - Dad
Looking forward to next time, love you too.

*Sounds like the first thing to do is make more time for family! Good tour / pictures of the bunker area. Not sure why we needed bunkers there. Did we expect a D-Day landing of sorts? **2:19** prehistoric dinosaur egg. 🦕 Shots of Dad and brother. I guess sister told you off since you don't visit! 😅*
Thanks for watching David. Back in 1900 the bunkers and military fort was built to protect Bremerton shipyards and vulnerable Seattle and Tacoma ports from enemy warships. There were no military planes at that time but any invading fleet would have to enter the sound at this point so Fort Worden, Casey and Flagler were built to guard the front door.
Must be nice to see your dad after 2 year, so awesome to see a deer so close. So cool to see the old bunkers, thanks for a awesome vlog.
Thanks a lot for watching Espen. I appreciate it 🤩😃

Hello from Lakewood. Growing up, when we were kids, we camped there every summer with my grand folks(RIP). They lived out in PT, which is just the cutest little town. We had our family reunions at We know every inch of those bunkers. We' d play "army" with all the other camping kids. We were told the lighthouse was haunted by the spirit of the old keeper who ended his life there. It still gives me the willies. These days I go there to camp with my own children. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I hope you had a good visit with your family. ❤
I’m super happy that you enjoyed the video and I’m especially glad it brought back some great memories for you🤩 My sister and her family live in Lakewood. Take care and thanks again for watching 👍

Thanks a lot for watching Eddy🤩
Having grown up in Port Townsend, I was unaware how lucky I was to live most of my life a stone's throw away from Fort Worden. I just assumed everyone lived near someplace as cool as that. When I was a young adult and moved away from Washington for the first time, I'd tell stories about my adventures there to new friends, and a lot of people flat out didn't believe such a place existed and was accessible, and especially that it was so large (433 acres) and had so many bunkers. My friends in California were aware of coastal artillery installations, but they were typically quite small and only housed a battery or two at most, whereas Fort Worden has 14 batteries of various designs and configurations and had 45+ gun emplacements. If enemy forces had ever tried to round the bend into Puget Sound, Artillery Hill would have brought complete fury to bear.
Thanks so much for watching and for the great comment. PT is a pretty special and unique little place. I do love Fort Worden and go for a hike there several times a week. It’s a great place full of history. Thanks again👍🤩

Liked #57, very cool abandoned bunkers of Fort Warden. I had no idea Washington still had these. Nice sound effects added of helicopters and machine guns to give it the feel for the action (maybe shake the video when spraying the bullets, haha). Love the view from top at 10:41, worth the trek to the top, a nice reward for the long journey to the top. More highground bunkers, thanks for showing the interiors as well. Nice trekking trails while visiting these bunkers, nice collection of photos!!! Happy to support your channel, take care 😎👍

Very interesting Dave looking at where Fort Worden is you can clearly see the strategic importance of why it's there at a pinch point on Pugent Sound protecting the entrance into Seattle.
How tame was that dear you just casually walked by 😮.
I hope you weren't late to meet up with your dad, and that you had a great day.
Thanks for commenting Ivor🤩 I was only a little bit late, lol.
