That's an awesome looking area! I need to visit and do some hiking, especially on a clear day with blue skies. Haven't finished the video yet, but I think that's Mt Baker. That's the noticeable mountain you can usually see north of Seattle.
The setting for the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman was at the historic Fort Worden on the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington which played the part of "Port Rainier Naval Air Station" along with the nearby historic town of Port Townsend, Washington.
Stayed in the officer’s houses many times Officer and a Gentleman filmed there. So many eagles and places to go. Battery’s are fun for kids. Great restaurants in town. Lots to explore around. Wondered why you’ve not spoken of it too often. My Fave!
I agree on the mountain. Mt Adams is behind Mt St Helens. You would see St Helens and Mt Rainier before Mt Adams. And as others said, if you are looking towards Seattle most likely Mt. Baker. Have you visited Salt Creek County Park west of Port Angeles? They have bunkers there that were built right after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor to protect Japan from coming into the sound. They never did have to use them. The fall we were volunteers there at the park we saw a sub surface and the coast guard approach it.
Love ,love, love Salt Creek. Just got home a couple of weeks ago from a couple of weeks in Sequim. Went to east end of lake Crescent to walk in the Spruce Trail then went up to Salt Creek and ate our lunch in the car looking at the water. I love the Penninsula! Every inch of it! Those bunkers there at Salt Creek are really big and spooky!
This was a wonderful visit. It felt synchronous - I'm just back from my own visit to a WA state park - Cape Disappointment. There was a very small battery I got to see and clamber over, built much the same as the ones you showed us at Fort Worden. It's always an interesting combination of fun / thoughtful / grateful to see these historic sites. Thanks!
I think your right, this maybe the best, a hidden treasure. I get the feeling of being at a serene place as you walk around it and show it. You hit it on a nice dry sunny day, Fall is the best !! And I'm enjoying this while drinking your favorite beverage, coffee....cheers !! And a $10 dollar entry fee seems like a bargain now a days....hehe. Take care and travel on !!
And another very nice walk in the park! Though I'm not an expert on historical American mores, I believe one of the earliest examples of the Seattle Freeze comes down to us from the era when Sunday drives were becoming customary. Such a driver might ask for directions from a local, who might begin "Oh yes, it's right down that way" -- and pointing in a definite direction, would add "but you can't get there from here . . "
Yay Port Townsend. I moved here 40 years ago and I called it paradise then and still consider it so. Port Townsend is a small town with everything you would find in a big city. Art, music, great food, great coffee, walkable, hiking, bikes, water on 3 sides of the peninsula, beautiful homes. Welcome to Port Townsend.
Port Townsend is still on the list of sundown towns for us Black folx. Beautiful area by day however, but ya better be outta sight before the sun goes down. Same with Sequim and Port Angeles, our school bus always had to have a police escort out of town when our high school played out that way. The only downside to the area.
I really like your hair-do! You're getting pretty good at that now. Thanks for all the great info. I'm supposed to be coming to the US next year, so I'll add that park to my list.
I believe that Port Townsend has milder weather because it is located in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic mountains. The nastier weather is blocked by the Olympics on one side and by the Cascades on the other I guess, giving less precipitation and warmer temps.
Wow. I just love historical places. Great video scott , and it looked like you enjoyed yourself. You should have taken a flask of coffee, I never go anywhere without one x
Mount Baker. You were looking north towards Whidby Island. Beyond that and slightly left would be Anacortes. To the far left across the Strait of Juan de Fuca is Vancouver Island. At night you can see the lights of Victoria. You need to take a boat ride on the car ferry from Anacortes to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. You could easily spend a week exploring Orcas, Lopez, Shaw, and San Juan Islands. Plus there’s a food Co-op in Mt. Vernon I think you would enjoy. 🦋
I've traveled to Port Angeles several times this year and will have to check out Port Townsend & that park next time I'm out that way. It looks so nice 👍
If you are still in the area you might want to check out Fort Flagler if you havent. The grounds are quite as impressive, smaller base, but the camping areas I think are much nicer. Fort Worden has the upper sites that I'm not a fan of, and the beach sites. Beach sites are great for a van/rv but very windy quite often. Fort Flagler has much nicer camping options. And some great walks around the water with the old gun and searchlight emplacements.
I visited Port Townsend over 10 years ago while on vacation with a girlfriend. But we moved on quickly and didn’t see the park. Not long after that I was fooling around in maps and saw it and immediately was filled with regret that we missed it. Still haven’t made it back but it’s definitely on my list.
💜 I hope you made it back to the glass beach. I’ll have to go see if I can do a search for you there. In Minnesota it’s always fun to be up at Lake superior in Duluth, looking for agates and tumbled glass. Amazing to see the power of the water and what it can do…
@@StaticCamperVan well, yes, the timing on that would have to be just right. You would need to be full of energy to make the walk and then of course the tide would have to be out and then you have to make the walk back before the tide came in… Some challenges there… But, if you ever do make it out there I hope you take us with you :-) take care!
Excellent area...thanks for sharing. I'm thinking Mt. Baker. We've had the warmest fall here in Southern Alberta...since the 1930's!! (Nearly 80F the other day). Alas, I woke to TONS of heavy, wet snow this morning. 😢 ❄❄❄❄❄ 👍😎🇨🇦📷 P.S. you're such a nice person, Scott!
You're close to Marrowstone Island where Fort Flagler is. It's a nice place to visit. There is also a nice beach to visit on Indian Island (which is on your way to Marrowstone Island). There is a clearly marked beach access or lookout sign pretty soon after you get onto Indian Island, where there is a small parking area and easy trail to the beach. I hope you're enjoying your time in my neck of the woods. :)
Thanks for the recommendation. Western Washington is one of my favorite places. Maybe I should have gotten here earlier as the rainy season is almost upon us.

A gimbal should help with shakiness, I saw one when chrome on vancity vanlife got one. I have never been to that park, looks like one I should check out. Another great video.
Nice walk you took us all on. Funny, this says it was filmed a day ago, yet i just saw a message posted saying you were no longer travelling and were parked up at a friend's property, doing some jobs. I don't know when that was posted so might have been back a while. Your last haircut came out great, by the way. I use a single edge razor on mine. Much easier than sitting at a hairdressers and saying prayers. 😜
I always enjoy your videos but this was especially fun because you clearly enjoyed it so much!! Lovely place and it's great that you got to go and were not eaten by Sasquatch! :D
Interesting about the relic of the fort, you're right, it is curious that it's just open like that. I like that there seems to be a sense of trust that people there won't trash the place. Yes, there's graffiti, but I would think it could be a whole lot worse. Either people who visit or hang out there are well-behaved, or there's a good maintenance crew! ☺️ I've been to Port Townsend only once, and I remember liking it. It was about 35 years ago, and while waiting at the ferry terminal (I think it was... seemed very remote though), I saw my first and only fox in the wild. 🦊 Another vote for that being Mount Baker.
What a beautiful spot! Thanks for showing. I'm always amazed of bumping in historical sites on my hikes and realize or imagine how life might has been in the past at that certain place. And then learn what impact history has on the present. That's fascinating. I would have timed the founding of the fort at around WW II. But it actually was taken into service right after 1900. I wonder which enemies one has intended to defend oneself against. The Canadians? Hmmh. There was never fired a hostile shot from the battery. That sounds good. On wikipedia i read this too: "Battery Walker (1907-1946), located on Artillery Hill. Contained two M1903 3-inch guns on pedestal mounts. Named after Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker, Texas Rangers, who died October 9, 1843, at the Battle of Huamantla." Anyway. Thanks for taking me to Ford Worden in Washington State. Wish you a nice sunday.
Cape George….not Saint George. Probably Mount Baker, not Mount Adams. Be careful going to glass beach. The hours between tides and the tide levels are very important. People have had to be rescued. I hope you enjoyed yourself in this beautiful little town.
Is that Puget Sound or the Strait of Juan de Fuca? I know it is close to that area. When I was staying at a cabin in Neah Bay, we could actually see British Columbia in the distance.
It's the Straight of Juan de Fuca but because most people aren't familiar with this area, it is customary to refer to all of these waters as either "The Sound" or the Salish Sea.
