I LOVE that Erwin sounds a mess here because it gives me hope and reminds me that as opera singers we get better every every day! Its great to see someones humble beginnings. Who wants a singer that has sounded good their entire lives? They're boring.

@Ysacoelfua With this rendition, he won the first prize on this singer competition. And now is the "Beloved" of the Metropolitan Opera House, in New York. Probably because it is a terrible performance, you are probably correct. All the other opera fans are wrong.

@Ysacoelfua Dear Ysacoelfua, my ironic nick belongs to everybody here, that like opera. I've seen on stage many singers, like Del Monaco, Corelli, Bonisolli, Caballé, Millo, Casolla, Marton, Domingo, Pavarotti, and SO MANY others. I can be satisfied with Mr. Schrott way of singing, because I have 'reference' to compare, from live performances. Try to not compare video or audio performances, because only live, on stage, you really know a good and a great singer. To me (and to many people) he's ok

He was fantastic here, the problem that alot of young bass-baritones face, I am alos one, is that there are so few roles suited to them at early stages in thier career. They are forced to sing the high baritone repertoire to make a name for themselves, in a staged version of macbetto he couldn't really play Banquo, this is why he has made a name for himself as Leporello, a role that can be played by a younger bass singer.

Sì, ha vinto ("Erwin Schrott wins the "Concurso...").

Indeed, I agree with operataste; people admire these singers because of their incredible performances. Very often voices recorded and live sound different. This is not a brilliant recording... You name me another great baritone (aside from Hvorostovsky), who does not merely puff themselves up and try to sing as loudly as they can. And even an opera fan who does not like Netrebko/Villazon would know better than to group them with Bocelli/Potts.
