My grandfather taught me to split wood with a single edged axe. He was the best I ever saw split wood. He said to ALWAYS split down the tree, never up the tree. It works! Neither of us ever used a splitting maul nor a hydraulic splitter, never needed one.

Awesome! Some people just get the hang of it and understand the grain. Sometimes when the wood won't split, it just needs to be flipped over and boom, it splits easily. I did plenty of splitting by hand long before I used a machine, but I'm biased towards a maul because a 4 pounder just doesnt seem beefy enough for me, feels too light.

Tje big stuff is fun when you know you can bust through em. Even if comparable, I'm guessing your wood with still split easier than red oak. It'd mot always typically very easy to quarter these big red oak rounds

Always a good feeling when red oak comes in, just a little tough loading on the truck when I get it!

Nice spitting Anthony. Red oak is a good one to split. I noticed your hitting you axe handle on the wood behind the piece your splitting. Would it be better to turn around and split those pieces without the wood behind. Then the handle would not hit any thing. Just a thought.
    Have a great day. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋

Ya I'm a little careless with the axe with hitting rhe shaft. The Garant maul takes a lot of abuse though. Ive busted many brands in the past.

I done the same thing. And ruined axes. I try not to do that, but 🤷🏻‍♂️. Not a fan of Garant any more. Bought a hatchet and splitting maul a few years ago and the head came loose with in a few months. Wood handles. Always bought Garant. Not any more.
And of course, could not find the receipt, to Thales them back.

@noelstractors-firewood57 I ya Gatant is not the best, but a lot better than the Princess Auto mails. I broke the head off one of those in one day. I returned a few and they said we'll just give you your money back 🤣
I want to import a Jauregi 6 pounder from Spain. The Basques employ their ancient blacksmithing legacy to a mean looking axe
