    Outstanding show, guys. I’m seeing the entire show for the first time. RJ’s profound passion for the subject matter jumps right off the screen. Michael is like the Italian/Sicilian version of the Irish Seanchaí - in the old days a Seanchaí would travel from village to village - each night a different house - where parents and children would huddle around the fire, mesmerized by this storyteller/historian. All for a meal, some drink and a warm scratcher (bed). The word itself means storyteller in the Irish language (Gaeilge).
    You guys are professional, like NBC: ‘Nothing But Content’.

      My dad said that, too. He said jeans were for fields. (we had a farm.)He said people made an opinion upon the first impression,and the way you dress sets the tone in their mind. That was a time when it mattered what folks thought of you, I suppose. It isn't as important today... as we plainly see with all the crazy walking around. Something to be said for those times... sad days we are in now.

    The Godfather always reminds me of King Lear, the powerful father passing his kingdom to his 3 children. Sonny was strong like Vito, Fredo had his charm and kindness and Michael inherited his intelligence and ruthless strategic thinking. It differs in many ways from Lear plot wise but it's still a tragedy in many ways.

    Would love to see Mikey comment on both HBO’s Gotti, and the movie based on Sammy’s book, Witness to the Mob. You were still in the life when both of those came out right Mikey? Did the guys all discuss these movies? Must have been weird, as they were about you all 😂. Any thoughts about stuff back in the day as portrayed in Boardwalk Empire, with Masseria, Maranzano, Luciano, Lansky, Capone etc. would be good. And I know RJ doesn’t like the look of it, but The Sopranos. That was Mikey’s era. How real was it? I’m gonna watch “The Offer” tonight - thanks for the recommend!
    I get RJ’s point about The Godfather movie being bad for the mob overall. Maybe Franzese is exaggerating, but I think it’s a bit like Gotti being on the front of Time Magazine. It might be good for the organisation in that it makes you popular with the public. But when a supposedly secret organisation becomes a famous organisation, and people all over - even in Utah - are talking about it, it puts a big target on your back for law enforcement and the government.
    Cheers!

  • @deduce9980
    @deduce9980 Рік тому +3

    Outstanding job! I'm with Michael D. on the impact of The Godfather being more positive for the mob. It was all about honor which in the 60s and 70s was really starting to fade in many ways. That entire generation of youth had a great distrust of authority after Vietnam and three horrific political assassinations (JFK, RFK, MLK). We had spaghetti westerns, like The Great Silence by Corbucci, coming out of Italy that were the darkest westerns ever made, The Dirty Harry movies on the West Coast, blaxploitation films, serial killers popping up all over. They were dark times. The French Connection about heroin dealers came out in 1971. GF I and II were also very dark but had more positive cultural impact than anything IMO, as Michael noted. The studios didn't want to allow Italian language with subtitles but Coppola forced them to do it. The wedding scenes here and in Sicily! Amazing. I'd love to hear more about Once Upon A Time in America (and Murder Inc., etc), Donnie Brasco, Raging Bull, Bugsy, Lansky, and The Sopranos. This series on movies should help put to rest the accusations that the show is mostly about Sammy. It would be great to have guests on connected to the movies in some way as well, even the wives or kids of some of those people involved. There has to be a few forgotten gems still out there. Keep up the great work fellas!

    Enjoyed the discussion. I agree with Michael on "The Irishman." As someone interested in history it made me cringe. There were a few good scenes in it though, such as when Harvey Keitel played Angelo Bruno. Keitel actually became Bruno in the film. Another film that's even more cringe for a history buff is "Bugsy," starring Warren Beatty. The scene where Bugsy made Jack Dragna - a Mafia boss - crawl around like a dog made me want to pull my eyes out so I could unsee it. For a future review I would like to see a full video on each of the John Gotti movies, on what they got right and what they got wrong. There's the one with Armand Assante, the one with John Travolta, and I would throw in the film about Sammy the Bull, "Witness to the Mob" starring Nicholas Turturro.

I think it's hard to make a good mob movie based on truth today because there are so many Mobologists out there. Mr. DiLeonardo , we show our age because my Grandson told me they aren;t " Dungarees" they're Jeans when I told him to get a new pair of Dungarees when He had a couple of holes in them He had a laugh ( He's a good kid}. • @HolloVVpoint
    @HolloVVpoint Рік тому +2

    I think RJ made a really good point in an earlier video. The most important change in the fall of the Mob is the change in culture. This is true with all organised crime groups that rely on a certain ethnic group.
    From the 20s through to the 60s Sicilian/Italian culture was stronger within the community. As the majority of members of the 5 families would of been first or second generation Italian immigrants. Sicilian values where conservative and the mobs values would of mirrored those values. So you would of had less people who are inclined to talk to police, give testimony, dress in a flashy way or seek media attention. Doesn’t mean it didn’t exist but it would of been rare and the people becoming members would of been more closed off and harder to infiltrate.
    That changes in the 70s and 80s when people would of had weaker ties to Sicily and that culture in would be more American and where those values and ways of thinking become less and less important etc…

Who made their own full body armour, & didn't employ a disgruntled, ex-con diner line cook as their getaway driver.

    In the movie “The Godfather “ when the singer goes to the Godfather daughter’s wedding, that was based on Frank Sinatra complaining about he couldn’t get out of the contract.. It was Albert Anastasia that went to the label /record company and threatened them, either you sign the contract to release Frank or your brains will be all over .. The Godfather is base on true facts from different events in the mafia not based not about 1 person or 1 family

    Great video guys. I had a question and always wondered, when the newspapers and even the reports on TV back in that day would report or say for example that John Gotti is the godfather or mafia member or whomever else they'd bring out of the woodwork, couldn't anyone sue them for slander for example cuz in a court of law thst wasn't proven and it was alleged. I mean how could the media label some guys at that time when in doing so, at that time nothing was proven in a court of law nor at certain times they weren't even charged and only looked at.

    IMO, it wasn't the Godfather or any other film that did any harm to the Mafia. It was exposure in general. The Godfather created a genre of Mafia films, then more and more, then documentaries naming names etc. To me, it was public exposure in general that may have done some damage so to speak.

    How old was Jackie in that photo? And I definitely think the godfather helped the mob in terms of public perception of it. It presented a very romanticized and almost moral/honorable version of the mob while the reality was much different.

Was it more of a stereotype, or did you see guys that carried themselves like a Pesci did? We know Sammy Gravano when he tells his stories, likes to portray himself as a Pesci type of character
