In this video from Christiane Karam’s Vocal Styles from Around the World course, Astghik Martirosyan discusses Armenia’s history with music, including their own musical concepts and their own musical notation system. A classical pianist, composer, and vocalist from Armenia, Astghik holds a passion for the folk music of her country. She says that through listening to Armenian songs she was able to find out more about her heritage and her ancestors. Armenian music was generally Monadic and used a scale different from the Western standard. A study by the Armenian composer Komitas finds an interesting difference between Armenian songs composed in the mountains to those composed in the plains. The songs created in the area with mountains were more harsh in their sound and were more articulated. But in contrast, the songs created in the plains tended to be more lyrical and dreamy. But both types of songs have something in common, they’re usually monophonic.

So interesting the correlation between music characteristics of their folk music and flat or mountainous lands.
