Ryan, I recently decided to start my goal of improving my lawn and tackle some lawn care issues and came across your channel.I found a number of your videos helpful and inspirational. Iam now a subscriber to your channel! I appreciate your videos!
Same here. No rain.
I planned my over seeding with rain in the forecast 2 weeks ago (using ur over seeding video) and since nobody can guess this Chicago forecast, we probably got 2 good days of rain. Its been nothing but high 80’s a few mid 90’s but thanks to ur old videos your steps really helped. I’ve been watering every day in the late afternoon when the sun is close to setting so my seed wouldn’t dry out and the transformation is amazing I can’t wait to mow! Areas that have struggled to grow grass is now coming in and I have a much fuller lawn. Peat moss really is key! Ryan thanks for all your great tips! Keep the videos going!
Glad to help!
Practising what he preaches... patience. Thank you for the insights! Here in New Brunswick Canada, we have had the driest summer in recent memory. My lawn looks like poop.
Here's hoping your advice and some elbow grease can bring it back to life.
I’m dealing with similar conditions right now so the timing of this video is perfect!
A lot of really tough conditions this year
Indeed! Quick question. I currently have a monostand of KBG and was thinking of blending in some PRG. I’ve found a nice blend from super seed store that is 60%KBG 20% PRG and 20%chewing fescue. Ideally I would do 80/20 KGB/PRG but curious what your thoughts are about having the fescue? I’m pretty much strait East if you in MI so similar conditions.
@@Mark-zi2og my personal preference would be no fescue with that mix...just has a different look than the other grasses but can be good for those with more shade. You could likely blend a customer 80/20 kbg to rye from SSS
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care thank you for your response and advisement. My concern also was the inconsistent look of adding the fescue. I believe the KBG and PRG would blend much better. I will follow up with SSS about a custom blend.
Thanks Ryan. This couldn't have come at at better time. 8.46 inches of rain here this year, wild fires, smoke, heat. Lawn has taken a beating. I needed this plan of action.
So timely! Last week I noticed the lawns in my neighborhood are starting to turn brown, and by now most lawns are completely brown. And today I see your video about it. I watch your videos the most because you are in Iowa and I'm in Illinois, and you seem to hit everything I'm wondering about. BTW, my lawn is still very green! :D
Yep pretty similar weather here in the Midwest although western Iowa right now is in really bad shape drought wise
Excelentes videos, saludos desde AMBATO ECUADOR
Lawn work..... neverending. But it's fun to take something that looks terrible and make it beautiful. And watching your videos is the first step to achieving that.
I live in the PNW and got a couple weeks ahead on my fall maintenance. On my front yard I did the whole shebang a week ago, pacing myself, (de-thatch, core aerate, adding soil, Milorganite, starter fert, overseeding and peat moss) finally got to seeding last Friday and Saturday. I've been hand watering 2-3 times a day and I am already germinating!!!! I also looked at the 10 day forecast before I started. Our daily temps is mid to upper 70s. Partly cloudy, but plenty of sunshine every day. Nights are 50s. The peat moss was a game changer. We'll probably have a few more hot days in the 80s and maybe 90s but I think I'm in the clear. I had issues with my mower earlier in the season and it just ruined my lawn, now that is dealt with. So I had to wait it out until the week long heat streaks were pretty much over. That peat moss was a definite game changer. That's the one thing I hadn't been able to find until this season. I had to find it at a Lowe's the next town over. Now I need to find enough to do the back yard.
Huge help! I was literally wondering this today.
Great info. I’m in the same situation. Gonna hit the water as well. Hopefully the 90s are over this week!
I'm experiencing the same lack of rain here just west of Chicago.
I am in the same boat front yard is checked out, trying to water it back to life before starting overseeding. The backyard is in good shape so I am starting the overseeding process there first. This came out at the perfect time to confirm I have the right idea about it all. Great stuff as always!
Good luck!
Super helpful, same situation in Seattle
I didnt even think about it when i detatched but I should of tried to wake up the grass first. Will remember that for next year
Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge, reiterating best practices we should follow.
I’m in nz and we had a horrendously hot, dry summer that ended in drought. My sissy grass completely died. I decided to reseed in tall fescue, and couch (berm). It’s now established, and looks awesome.
Never heard of seeding right before the winter. Interesting stuff. I'll be giving that a go to see if it helps kick start growth in the Spring. I break up cores using a scarifier, just run right over them and they turn to dust.
Your lawn will be the greenest late in the season and Early spring
I let my grass go dormant the past few weeks. Mowed lower every week. Dethatched x2 with SunJoe. Preparing to level with super loam (loam and compost mix). Then seed, Scotts starter fert w/ mesotrione and peat moss to protect from birds and hold moisture!
This is the exact video I needed. I'm getting similar temps in IL so thanks for the reassurance that my brown grass is ok at this point.
I can't wait to see how your lawn recovers
coming soon...I'm excited to get working on it
Yep 👍... great info Ryan. This year has been a tough one for us as well here in New-Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦. The lack of having regular rainfalls from spring until now has been very difficult. But starting this weekend and looking ahead, the forecast looks somewhat good. Hoping to bring back my lawn as good as it was last year same time before winter ❄️.
I’m in the transition zone and decided to try to integrate kbg into the tall fescue this year. I also rolled the dice 🎲 and did it very early in the spring, but not the entire yard. Grass came up, looked good and BAM 💥 record setting heat and humidity all of July. Rain was pretty normal and I didn’t have to water too much to keep about and inch of water on the grass. It died anyway..so I thought. Never have seen dormancy like that before. It’s been a bit cooler this month and much to my surprise the kbg is recovering, but not everywhere. Getting it prepped to overseed in a couple of weeks. Thanks for to the point advice and not a ton of gabbing.
Dude your channel has been killing it this year. Content has been awesome, really looking forward to where your lawn will be by Halloween. I've got similar issues to yours in my backyard, cannot wait to dig in and get to fixin'!
Agreed!!!! Ryan’s videos have helped me so much, my lawn looks the best it ever has in the 5 years I’ve lived at my house.
Deck looks awesome! The tall fescue I overseeded with last fall is looking great and green. Haven't mowed in almost 3 weeks now because of no rain here in SE Minnie. Haven't spent a ton of time this year on the lawn instead put money into roofing siding and well the house. Decided I need to remove some trees to open the yard up to more sunlight. September plan on testing perennial rye and kbg in test plots across the lawn. Love the videos have learned so much, thank you Ryan!
Sounds fun
Great vid, can’t wait to see the update on your project lawns this fall. The deck is looking good too! Keep up all the hard work.
Project idea. Do a renovation of the grass outside the fence next to the ditch with tall fescue.
Won't be this year. Maybe next
Ryan, I had a terrible case of fungus completely kill(its not dormant anymore, its dead) my fescue in 1/2 my yard. Have you ever seen fungus that bad? I literally have to start over in that area for fall seeding.
I feel like even throwing seed down on the grass without aeration helps. When the rain does come it will help drive that seed down under the canopy and to the soil. I did it last year and felt like I got good results. So i do not plan on core aeration. I will use liquid air 8 and then over seed.
Ive been throwing seed and milo mix together for 3 years and it works great without dethaching or aeration.
Just over seed in my yard after a core aeration, we are also in a drought, but I am watering heavy and cooler temperatures are upon us
I water my Bermuda deeply every 3 days in 120 degrees in a desert with only an inch and a half of water a week. My lawn is greener than a golf course. 👍 This is one of the many pros of living in a warm and cool grass transition area.
Bermuda can easily grow here during the summer. It's the -30 in January that is an issue.
I always learn a little bit more with each video. Love it!
Could you please convert the temperature and tell us both types for Europe as well as America. As I have no idea how hot or cold it is where you are lol (I'm sure your audience would appreciate) . I really love your videos keep them thank you
Thank you so much 😭 I NEEDED this in my notifications rn
I have definitely noticed more clumping fescue this year in my front yard and ditch area.
My weather in SW PA is very similar to yours. My yard is brown as can be. I'm glad you posted this because I was going to run the sunjoe this weekend but I'll wait for the grass to come back a little. That winter seeding might be an option.
Hopefully this weather changes soon and we get into a cooling pattern
This is about how my yard looks
Nice, thanks for the video! Great work on the deck too.
Very helpful thanks alot
Great Info
Great content. Dang...yall are gettin' what we usually get for August weather down here in the southeast. Keep'em coming.
This whole summer has been HOT
Looking forward to some cooler temps!
Great video Ryan, I’m renovating my back lawn very soon now that the temperature has dropped and we are getting plenty of rain👍
Love all the helpful videos. Keep up the awesome work. Erin, Ontario, Canada
Great video Ryan! I always learn a lot from your tips.
going to try out that dormant seeding idea this year be well friend ✌🏼
I really enjoy your videos! Here in Kansas bluegrass does not do well, so I decided to renovate my lawn and switch to RTF
Thank you for this vid. I was starting to panic with how my grass was turning out.
Dropping the knowledge! I love it!
This year has been bad for so many reasons. I just wish the lawn would have been better. First time with Fungus which killed a lot of my Rye Grass. Drought which browned out all the Midnight Blue Grass. Nutsedge everywhere you look. Add Crabgrass, Foxtail, Clover, etc throughout the yard. Going to try to aerate, topdress and over seed soon. I think I am going to use a split-seeder for the KBG and overseed with Rye then water, water, water.
We've all been there. 2020 has not been kind to anyone
Man the deck looks awesome 😎 love the vid Ryan!appreciate all your hard work
Here in Texas I’ve noticed a lot of people still mowing their lawn regularly, and real low at that. Now they’ve developed brown spots, it makes sense with these high temperatures and we haven’t seen much rain in like a month. I mowed 2 weeks ago and I can tell the growth has slowed down massively. It would be a jungle by now, but the grass is relatively low with a couple weeds everywhere. I’m afraid to mow again and end up with brown spots like my neighbors. Maybe I should mow at a higher length?
This is the first year that our yard is actually light brown. I'm going to start watering heavily now that the temps are supposed to drop next week. There is no way I can aerate yet because of the drought. Hopeful for a cool spell heading into September. Thanks for the great videos.
where do you live and what type of grass?
@@Jolt139 I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I've been overseeding with KBG for 10 years. I suspect there's some varieties of rye and fescue also.
@@jeffadams3277 yeah I'm in Atlanta and my bermuda sod looks like it's going more and more dormant by the week.. but we've been getting plenty of rain and the temps haven't been crazy, so I'm not sure what's going on with mine. Ive put milorganite down a couple times this summer and haven't noticed any great results from it
@@Jolt139 I've used milorganite before with the same results. By the time I get down the appropriate amount, the cost outweighs the results. I'm 100% a carbon x guy now, even in the summer. I know pete from GCI Turf applied carbon x to his Bermuda renovation a little while ago and it looks fantastic. Check his channel out, he has Bermuda info on there now.
@@jeffadams3277 thanks for the advice! I'll check it out
Hey, are you going to do a fall overseed video. I’m trying to find out my plan. Any other commenters, if I missed a video with this, please let me know. Have a great week.
I let mother nature run the show until November after all the leaves have come down. Then core and overseed. Never had a problem with dormant grass in November. There are some spots that don't recover from drought and I toss a bit extra seed on them and in spring it's all back.
Yep. Here in the Northeast, we're in a drought and temps are still hot. I need to do a Fall reno, but it's still too hot.
Tough when the weather doesn't cooperate
@@ryanknorrlawncare Absolutely. We're getting near crunch time since First frost is usually by mid-October.
Great advice. I live in mn and have the same issue you're going thru... take care brother!
Thanks, you too!
hell ya let's go. crispy grass here too.
Great tips! I was in the same predicament as you, but I have mafe my choice. Thanks Mr. Knorr
Hey. Why not during the winter build a couple of rain collectors and then during droughts you could use that water for the grass
You would need an insane amount of water...don't have room for that kind of collection. I go through my 250 gallon tank very quickly
Hey mr.knorr I really enjoy this
Idk what to do I have a horrible thatch problem so bad that the water isn't making it to the soil but my grass is thin itll probably get damaged pretty bad if I dethatch it 🤦♂️
Just overseed heavily after if you're already having an issue
@@ryanknorrlawncare awesome will do thanks man
Great information ss always Ryan! 👍🏻💯
My city has a no watering ordinance due to the drought. Fingers crossed for some good rain soon.
Back deck and ramp looks nice man!
Thanks!
An alternative to the rain guage is to put down a tuna can and see how long it takes to fill up.
How’s the rye grass in the front lawn doing?
It's actually doing great
My lawn is brown too!
Thank you. Here in Illinois we are dying my for rain. Luckily I’m on a well however I’m still tired of moving sprinklers around.
Yeah that's not fun either
This video should be called...."Winter is coming...."
Big dogg Knorr!😎👊
Thanks Ryan
In the spring I will be adding a product to a Raticate my tall fescue, did some heavy research on it and it is safe and will only target the fescue
What product is it?
Marcus T cimmaron plus
Great information tips
It's unfortunate kbg has a shallow root system. Watering can become a challenge with heat stress plus any fungus issues. Still my preferred grass type although I have TTTF in the mix. Best thing I did was rake up dead debris where needed, spot aerate and broadcast XGR 8-1-8. Pleased with the results, yet still a rough 2020 summer season.
Yep that fescue has some muscle in the heat but I still don't prefer the look as much :(
Perfect timing of your video. I’m getting ready to perform the steps but lowering my height of cut on my TTTF in southern Ohio. How low should I go before I start removing dead material. And how many days between cuts. Would love your thoughts?
Nice clearifying video!
We're just about coming out of severe draught here in my area and my lawn has also a lot of brown patches due to dormancy.
I coincidentally started to water my lawn a little heavier today.
Question: when should I plan to start my fall overseeding process?
Why not go with tall fescue everywhere? It looks great once coverage is uniform.
I have a few spots with crabgrass and some other weeds. How long do I have to wait between adding weed killer, aeration, and overseeing? Or would it be better to skip the weed killing and just use a late season fertilizer before aeration. I live in northern WV.
Just a quick question. We just moved into a house we’re renting, and the tenants before did not take care of the yard at all. There’s moss, dandelions, and brown everywhere. What would you recommend as the first thing to do to revitalize the lawn, and what steps would be good to do after that? We live in western Washington state. I’m just looking to ultimately have a nice yard and a good place for my granddaughter to run around. Definitely like your channel and all the information you have. Very useful!
[Based on watching his videos in the past year or so] I'd recommend checking out his lawn renovation playlist. I can't say if it's too late to start round-uping everything and starting from scratch, that might be stressful too, but the overseeding playlist is also helpful.
I'm in the exact same spot.Just moved in a month ago (Same area), most of the green is moss. I threw down some moss killer a few weeks back and that seemed to kill off alot of it. I'm thinking first few weeks of September I'll be thatching to pick up all the moss and crap. Followed by aeration and seeding. Then water.
Between your cool season guide, countless UA-cam vids and arsenal of Simple Lawn Solution goodies; I'm pumped to tackle my 1st lawn care project by overseeding the back yard. (with plans to do a full reno next year on the front yard)
Low mow, core aerate, 0.25in layer of compost, seed, peat moss top dress, tenacity app, water, wait 3-5 days add starter fert, continue to water and hope for the best.
Can't thank you enough for all the good info you've shared over the years! #sissygrassisking
Great to hear!
You mentioned that you should buy extra seed when seeding an area in case it does not come as full or you have washout. When can you add more seed and what’s the process if this happens?
Yeah my bermuda sod looks like it's going dormant.. I'm in Atlanta. We've gotten plenty of rain and milorganite is the only thing I've put on it this summer.. other bermuda sod in my area is looking healthy and green - don't understand why mine is struggling.
Can you specify what kind of thatching machine are you using in the video ? It look like it does really well not the electrical green one the big white one !!
Parts for the DYI above ground sprinkler system are on the way. In PA we have been dealing with similar weather to what you have been experiencing.
Thank you so much for sharing that with us. It will help me do the minor rejuvenations and overseeding I want to do to my lawn.
TTTF is the best
Kinda unrelated, but its grass related. I accidentally sprayed weed AND grass killer on some spots in my yard. I feel like a douche for not seeing grass killer on the bottle. Now I have a bunch on Virginia button weed going in it's spot. I was doing so good with my lawn goals too. I feel like I've failed our master, Ryan Knorr :(
Whoa! Grass looks like crap quick!
While it is in the stage you should have a irrigation system back there
The answers I was looking for! Thanks so much for the great videos! Do you offer local evaluations? I'm located in Urbandale, I could also show you my take on your above ground sprinkler system.
Another great video with perfect timing! I'm planning to overseed my front and back yard in 2-3 weeks. I've let my backyard go dormant this past month due to the extreme drought and heat we've been in. My front yard im planning to Dethatch lightly, aerate, and overseed. I'm thinking I should go ahead and start watering my backyard again to wake it back up before overseeding, however I"m kind of torn on whether or not I should Dethatch and Aerate, or one or the other. One other question, would some milorganite be bad to throw down on the backyard to help it wake up?
How can you tell the difference between brown dormant grass and dead grass? I am pretty sure summer heat killed most of my tall fescue/perennial ryegrass. It looks dead not dormant.
Enjoy it👏👏
Thunderstorms....living in WA there has never once been a thunderstorm warning LOL
I love thunderstorms....we have not had many this year
if one does not have a well for watering.....forget it.
Perfect! Just the info I was looking for.
Hello.... thanks for the videos.... I love the.... I have a question which come first the Aeration or the scarifier Thanks again
Is it ok to seed and possibly aerate or power rake my lawn if I power raked and seeded last fall?
I had some grubs that turn the grass brown, I treated that, but will the grass come back or will I have to replace it next year ?
Hey Ryan! I'm in Iowa City! Do you have any recommendations on where to buy some quality grass seed? Thinking about overseeding my hard with TTTF. Right now its just a hodge podge of everything (many years of using big box store seed)
Maybe turn that backyard into fescue!!
