From a special Bach Birthday concert called "Sonatas and Partitas" at the WGBH Fraser Performance Studio, Classical New England host Cathy Fuller welcomes EMI Classics guitarist Xuefei Yang - one of the first Chinese guitarists to play in the West - for a performance of the popular "Air" from Bach's Suite No. 3. In 1974 Laurindo Almeida recorded the Air inside his LP "Bach is beautiful", that I bought by chance. I fell in love with Bach and that Air was among my preferred pieces. Since then I listened to many, many versions of it, but no one was even close to him. Until now. Impressive. Bach is easy and is not easy to play: you need rigour and passion at the same time. Yang plays it perfectly, but maybe the word 'perfect' is even demeaning her performance. Technically gorgeous but also full of feelings, almost touching the heavens. Mystical. Usually this kind of interpretation happens when an artist is more mature, much further in the years; amazing that Yang can play like this at her young age. And she looks even very brilliant in mind and attractive in her body!
I love this piece, but I love everything that Xuefei plays. She well deserves being called one of the best classical guitarists in the world. Xuefei, this brings tears to my eyes.
I think Bach would weep with joy if he could hear this.
Her tempo is perfection.

Like Pat Metheny said "We all suck compared to Bach". Xuefei Yang brings out the beauty of this piece as only she can do. It is very emotional to hear such beauty in a currently ugly World.
Look for the beauty in the world, it is all around. If you see it as ugly that is all you will find.
Amazing. Her zest for music is apparent in the way she describes how she adapted the piece for guitar. Lovely.

Because I play this myself on guitar I have heard many different ways musicians play it...but this transcription is unique and beautiful. Wish I could get the score somewhere..

WGBH Music, would it be possible to buy a transcription of Xuefei's wonderful arrangement for the education of my Ten year old son, as he has fallen in love with Xuefei's arrangement and he just loves this particular tune in general.

She and Andres Segovia can do legato on the guitar, like singing a long note. Very soothing. Very hard to do, indeed.
