Raqs.444 Hi thanks for your comment. I dont think there was a great amount of tools needed. A selection of 10,12 and 13mm spanners/sockets and i think it was a 15mm for belt tensioner. A small pry bar for releasing the old unit. Think that was about it.
I’m half way through this job. All bolts removed but the thing won’t budge or come off!! I’ve taken off the two bolts and the two electric connections and it’s still stuck fast. How do I take the alternator off?
@@shaunburns543 hi.. There is a moveable sleeve in one of the mounting brackets that tends to stop them moveing..this can either be levered back or worked with a pry bar to loosen it.. If you have all the bolts out there is nothing else hokding it on
Pulley 60 £ , new alternator from Vauxhall 650£. Much easier just to replace the pulley with the alternator on position. You just need a special removal tool ,7 £ from ebay.
You can get parts for that car easy in the uk,most common parts ever, cost way more than it needed to,but then who cares when its only the customers hard earned £ money
The video was more to show you the fault rather than nuts n bolts removal. Its only two bolts holding it on. You dont need a step by step ibstruction for that. But thanks anyway for your coment
Hi..yes the belt can easily be accessed from under the car. Jack the car up and remove the offside front wheel. You then need a long flat 13mm spanner or suitable tool to move the self adjusr against the spring. If you have a small drill bit or simular there is a hole to lock the adjuster in place to enable you to slip the belt off and replace it. Then you just have to pull the pin out and it will tension the belt.
@@shaunsautorepairs5410 thanks I might give this a go. I'm chasing an issue which screams alternator but as a curve ball someone on the forum had the exact same issue and it turned out to be a loose glow plug. Here is the link : ua-cam.com/video/q_Enxnw7uos/v-deo.html. I'm going to check glow plugs this evening, then maybe check the alternator belt as it is definitely scored in the middle, don't really want to do the alternator as it's a cheap car and it was done 4 years ago!
you can replace the belt form the top, just remove the airfilter (has 1 bolt) and then then you will need a 15 or 13 wrench to detension self loading mecanism and locked in place using a nail or bolt or what ever cilindrical object that fit in that hole, once locked remove wrench and belt will come off easy, repeat steps backwords and you are done.
Hi..thanks for your coment. I dont remember having an issue getting it out. Once free it drop i thought it dropped out between subframe and engine but it may have come out over the subframe through wheel well...i cant honestly remember
Oh look..keyboard warriors are back..i had a look at your channel to find a video of how to fix it properly but you dont have any.... Maybe where your from you can access all the parts you need to repair these alternators. Here you cant get the pulley seperately and the alternator is on the shelf ready to go...so its a no brainer realy.
it was more of a "what was the fault" video.. changing it was just a few nuts n bolts...you dont need to watch me doing that.. thanks for your comment anyway
@@shaunsautorepairs5410 just saying I needed to replace an alternator on the same model and due the title of your video I was expecting to see an alternator replacement ie how to remove the alternator from its housing and the engine bay.... but I figured it out eventually.
How do you release the tensioner? Would be nice to see you actually removing the altenator from start to finish so we know exactly what to do.
This is exactly what's wrong with my vaxhall astra. How much did the parts cost roughly
Really helpful video. Do you have any idea on how much the labour cost would be for this job? Thankyou
Good job. Can the tensioner be unscrewed without removing the alternator ?. Is this screw on the back permanently or do you need to hold it?
Hi Shaun, any chance you could list the tools I would need to do this? Thank you, great vid

So you replaced an alternator when all it needed was a pulley which is 1/10th of the price.
Not so easy to just get a pulley on its own here in the uk. Even from the dealer..alternators are available. On the shelf or same day

As previously pointed out..pulleys on there own are not widely available. Alternators are on the shelf at reasonable prices.
A very expensive repair when all it needed was a clutch freewheel pulley a simple cheap £25 part which is available at all motor factors
You can get parts for that car easy in the uk,most common parts ever, cost way more than it needed to,but then who cares when its only the customers hard earned £ money
Couldn't you just replace the pulley on the alternator why should we replace the full part????
That would be a better option but at the time the pulley on its own was not available. The complete alternator was in stock so was the quicker option.
What's the point in this video you did not even show us how to take the alternator off

I think its only the 1.7 that has the vaccum pump on the back but im not 100%
Can you remove the belt on this one without too much disassembly? Have a worn belt on mine
