  • We are getting close to Thanksgiving and that makes me think of my Grandma's homemade bread. Today at Deep South Texas I will try to recreate the bread my Grandma used to make. It takes me two tries, but I am very happy with the results. The recipe is below, and I have includes the changes (Plan B) that I have made. I hope you give it a try.
    Grandma’s Homemade Bread Recipe
Mix ¼ cup lukewarm water and 1 packet of yeast. Set aside (I am using Fleishmann’s RapidRise Instant Yeast)
In a large mixing bowl combine: 2 tsp salt 4 tsp sugar 1 Tablespoon shortening (I am using Crisco) Add 1 cup boiling water and stir well, allow to cool
Mix in 1 cup bread flour - stir well
Add ½ cup water - stir (Plan B changes this to 1 cup water)
Add 1 cup bread flour - stir
Add yeast mixture (from above) - stir
Add 1 cup bread flour or more until you have a moderately stiff dough
(Plan B changes this to 3 cups bread flour)
Knead the dough for 8 minutes (this was not in the original recipe)
Place in oiled bowl, cover, let rise until double
Punch down and let it rise again, about 1 hour
Divide into 2 and place into 2 oiled loaf pans, let rise until doubled
    Bake at 375 F for 40 - 45 minutes

♥️ Hi. I’m new to your channel.!!!
My grandma didn’t write recipes down until her children started asking her to…. So she started writing some of the family’s favorites & about 20 years ago, she gifted me her 2 notebooks!
My grandma just passed away February 2022 at the age of 98- of sound mind & still cooking up until about a year before she died.
Saddest thing is that one of my father’s tenants (a relative from our home town in Mexico) stole my grandma’s recipe notebooks along with a whole lot of other things! I’m still heartbroken!
But I was so excited to see you found your grandma’s recipes and tickled to death that you are sharing them with us! Fills my heart!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 🙏 😊

I made this but substituted oil for crisco. It was wonderful! The kneading is the biggest thing you can’t pass over cause I’ve never kneaded that much before. It turned out great.

My Goodness! Wow 🤩 these are the best looking white bread I’ve ever layed eyes on! BRAVO 👏 👏 👏 Very well done Sir. God bless your dear grama. To me there’s no better food than that made by our mothers and grandmama’s and let’s not forget Dads n Gramps food either. The men handle all bbq n grilled stuff to perfection but home cooked soul food by our mama’s that’s as close to a religious experience I’ve had for sure 😁😉. I’m gonna make this beautiful bread and make my kids learn it too. Thank you Sir. I just found you today but I’ll be with ya for the long haul God willing I can’t wait to see what other great surprises you got on your channel. Be Safe, Much Love, Mad Respect and Many Blessings, California USA 🥰👏👏👏❤️❤️ oh my gosh that bread looks delicious I bet the whole neighborhood smelled it lol 😁 thanks 😊 🙏

Larry.. I bake bread twice a week. That is a bizarre method: I use 330ml water, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbs olive oil, 500g wholegrain flour, 7g yeast and 1 tsp sugar/honey, and bung it in a bread machine! :)
Although, I'm sure your non cheating method tastes excellent!

    • @DeepSouthTexas

I love making bread and buns. I’m going to try to fit a batch of this into my weekend. Is there a chance some of that extra water went in the oven in a dish to steam the bread a bit? If I understand correctly you still only used about half what is in the recipe.

    • @DeepSouthTexas
      @DeepSouthTexas  4 роки тому

In Plan B I used 2 1/4 cups of water.
      1/4 cup for the yeast
      1 cup boiling water
      1 more cup later
I do not think my Grandma tried to steam in the oven. The crust on this bread is meant to be softer than some of the other breads I make. Good luck. 🤠
