    UPDATE (1/15/23): According to independent reviewers from CES and the Roadshow, It's looking the the Crystal is delivering on many of it's promises! The FOV, Colors and Black Levels are all better than the Aero and no distortions. The build quality is not as good, but the visual experience seems to be impressing people. Unfortunately the "diopter adjustment" that they mentioned during the launch event seems to have been dropped. Pimax are developing a magnetic frame that will go over the lenses that I assume 3rd parties will use to make prescription lens adapters? So, in reality the Crystal is doing the same thing as everyone else for those with Myopia... nothing, and leaving it up to others to offer solutions to fix it. Hope that helps those of you interested in the Crystal. I'll update this again if any worthwhile news becomes available in the future.

    When it comes to Pimax, I take the "Believe it when I see it" approach. As for 3rd quarter, I'd be surprised if it's available in the 1st quarter next year, Pimax is well known for delays. I'm not really a Pimax basher, just observations of their past practices. I really do hope they can pull it off and most importantly, it ends up being a "quality" product that will last and not constantly need to be RMA'ed due to failures (you listening Valve?)

    • @CrazyAboutVinylRecords

      @@maximme That may be true, but the Meta Quest Pro is 10x the headset that anything Pimax has come out with so far. I had a reservation for a Crystal but after experiencing the shoddy build of the 8KX I backed out and walked away from it due to lack of confidence in Pimax. Maybe it will exceed expectations, but I will need to see several end user reviews of production units to be persuaded of that. I know people like to bash the Quest Pro (mostly over the company who makes it and the price), but having owned and used one every day for the last two months it is far and away the best VR Headset I have ever used. No headset, not even the Aero, has an optical stack that can compete with the Quest Pro. That being said, I have an Aero on order and it should ship any day. I think it will be an interesting comparison and am looking forward to it.

    I really hope Pimax steps up in terms of quality control in both hardware and software, no other headset I've tried has the weird glitches I sometimes experience with my 8KX.
    I want to support this company because I love that they are trying to give the consumers what they want, but to me things just feel sloppy.
    My 8KX is just sitting in it's box because I can throw on the G2 and play with no issues, it's the trust in the unit that I don't have with the Pimax.

      Thanks Jey, I'm humbled by your praise... I didn't think anyone would even have an interest in my thoughts so it is inspiring when you say you always learn new things from my videos. Hopefully either the Crystal or the 12K will work for you. According to Pimax the 12k has ZERO distortions. So I think the 12K might be your best option due to the WIde FOV, so even if it has distortions, they will be way out at the sides. I guess we will see when people actually get to try these for themselves! Thanks for being a GYGO viewer.

    Hmmm, I still don't feel totally piqued. I admit a lot of these specs are a bit above me though. Around 7:50 you addressed the huge issue that is big for me as well -- will it get total blacks, as that will be just about make or break for me as well.... I am also a glasses wearer and if this Crystal will indeed allow you to dial in your doctor's prescription and take your glasses off, that could be a huge attraction, but apparently they haven't clarified that yet.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Mike. I think the QLED will give us the best chance at black blacks without using OLED... but to my knowledge nobody has put them in a VR Headset yet so we will see. I do think there will be some "bloom" or glow around bright objects on a black background but that is just a guess. I think the prescription deal is likely just new "prescription" lenses that you exchange in the headset, so not really any different than getting prescription lens covers that you can do on most other headsets. But as you said they haven't 100% clarified yet. I'm not going to get excited until someone objective can try the headsets out and I'll probably lean more toward the 12K QLED for the wider FOV, but need to even see if these things become a reality first. Fingers crossed!

      I suspect that changing out those monster lenses is going to be a lot more difficult, but might be wrong. One thing you have to be very careful of with interchangeable lenses is not to let any dust onto the screens. I tried to like the Varjo Aero I really did, for me the barrel distortions are really bad (when you look up the floor bows upward like a smile pattern when you look downward it bows downward). It breaks the immersion and makes me feel motion sickness within 5 minutes. It definitely doesn’t feel like 90 hz to me, the movement feels a bit sluggish when looking around quickly. The FOV is pretty small too (coming from a G2 and a valve index). While the clarity is nice, there’s just too many negatives vs positives. I know everyone will have a different experience, it was not the best for me. I am returning it and going to order and try the 8KX.

I had the same problem until I really dialed in the sweet spot and got rid of most of the barrel distortion for me. Also, keep in mind the new Pimax 12k Qled is supposedly right around the corner so make sure the trade in program is still going with Pimax because then you can trade the 8KX in for the 12K if it ends up being a great headset. We will see how the new headset works out soon I hope. Either way, thanks for the comment and feedback on your experience.

The best would be if one day pimax could propose in the same package the 200 fov glass and the crystal glass that we could switch depending of the app you want to use. 12k is not before 3 to 4 year with probably the next nvidia 6090 or 7090. It is too much to handle. Two 6k screen simultaneously with ultra setting is a lot. I heard the ceo and i think he confirmed what i said. It is more an R&D development for the next 4 to 5 years. Pimax is on the right track. They need to increase their build manufactory, and increase to produce in more quantities that wiuld allow to reduce the price and become the reference. The resolution is good the tracking is decent with inside out tracking and perfect with base stations and index controller. The lens are good the dmas audio is good, the software serms good with their own runtime and openvr. They can now focus to stability and production and their r&d can focus on reducing the form factor, and reduce the price and make partnership with big names in the industry to develop application educative and gaming. They really need to bring back the headset in the 900$ range. I bought my headset samsung 6 years ago at 550$ CDN if i remember and it was sometime below that. And the headset is really good 2880x1600 oled 90hz with inside out tracking. I still use it today in fs2020 and it is not ridiculous at all compare to today. Do you think it is possible for other companies to offer lenses swap for current VR headsets? I mean there are many companies with long manufacturing optics history that would be able to produce kickass lenses, but don't have the expertise to make the whole VR headset.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Rhosta, appreciate the question. First and foremost I'm no expert on optics and I assume you are talking about some company making Aspheric lenses to replace current Fresnel lenses in headsets? The problem is you really have to tune the lenses to work together with the display in the headset so I don't think an optics company would be able to do a better job than the manufacturer. Now what I think could work is if they partner together... then they might be able to do something. It is my understanding that there is so much more than just taking a Fresnel lens and then just put in an aspheric lens because of all the distortion it creates. Now if the Crystal actually ever gets released and say the lenses suck, then maybe some other company could produce something because the Crystal's lenses are already Aspheric and they are designed to be modular. I hope that answers the question and thanks for watching.

      Appreciate the question. For the Steam based headsets that I've used, you can "downsample" the image as a whole but not really block out part of the resolution vertically. You can kind of do that horizontally in the Pimax headsets... but those are the only ones I'm aware of. Motion reprojection is also an option that helps but it isn't implemented on all headsets. Hope that helps. You could also look at a stand alone headset like the Quest 2 if you don't think you have enough PC Horsepower.

      Thanks for the comment DamienG! I agree 100% with your 12k feelings. As for Cambria, from what I'm seeing I don't think it is going to be ideal for gaming. Seems to me to be more focused on AR/Productivity and social VR and I don't think it is going to be cheap either. I personally don't think AR is really the format for gaming, it will be great for training and stuff but for gaming I see very few applications for it that would be better than just an overall VR only experience. PiTool stability: 5/5. PiTool ease of use: 3/5 - you need a "tinkerer mindset", there's lots of bad translations (e.g. "Close" means that a setting is "Off"), and it's possible that a headset goes dark if you enter incompatible settings. But ease of use has improved slowly over the years - 3 years ago I would've rated ease of use 2/5.

      There is a lot of adjustability in PiTool, but it can be argued that much of this adjustability is for things that the Varjo Aero already calibrates correctly (e.g. horizontal and vertical IPD offset, color balance…) and thus is there to compensate for shortcomings with the Pimax headsets.

Pimax is always hit or miss with their software from what I hear... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The Aero is also lighter... BUT all the things I hate about my Aero look to be resolved on the Crystal. PLUS if you do any roomscale, the Crystal should be wireless WITH A HOT SWAPPABLE BATTERY. One downside to the Crystal is that it has to run off the battery (license requirement for the XR2 chip I guess). So it will eventually run dead even if plugged into a PC. It looks like anywhere from 2 to 6 hours... There might be a work around by plugging it directly into a wall socket with one of the USB connections (like you do for your phone) and that seems to extend the usage BUT it will still run out. Of course you have a spare battery that you can just plug in when it does... but that does seem to be a downside. Pimax makes the best VR headsets, by far. Largest vertical FOVs, largest horizontal FOVs, highest refresh rates, PPD at least on par (if not higher) with every other mainstream headset (besides Varjo Aero which doesn't have much going for it besides high PPD), big sweet spot, very nice colours, contrast, and blacks (after a couple quick adjustments in Pi-Tool), some of the least screen-door effect on the market, some of the least godrays on the market, some of the least haze/bloom on the market.
    Heck, Pimax even gives users the freedom to increase FOV even further at the cost of refresh rate and vice-versa. Even at the highest refresh rate (which means lowest FOV), the FOV is still larger than any other headset, lol! All other companies should be embarrassed.
    The only thing with Pimax is that it's not as much for plebs (AKA normies) as some other headsets due to usually requiring more tinkering of settings for games, seting the IPD properly with vision tests (don't just punch in your #), etc..
    If Pimax delivers with the advancements being made with the upcoming 12K and Crystal - at least from the info that's been revealed - Pimax will be even further ahead of the rest of the industry as the 12K and Crystal are way more than just lens and panel upgrades...way more.

      Hi Pedro, thank you so much for the comment and for watching our stuff! I personally am very excited about the possibility of the Megane X headset... I LOVE OLED displays and I REALLY like the ability to dial in my eye prescription so no more glasses. I think the reason most aren't covering this right now is until people really see that it WILL become a Mass Produced product, they are hesitant to talk about it... Lessons learned from Deca Gear I'd say. Don't get me wrong, I am pulling for it to come out but taking a prototype to full consumer product seems to be a big step to take. As for me, I'm worried a little about the FOV and also the fact it seems like it will still be tethered. I think that is what has me more excited about the Pimax (even though I share your suspicions on Pimax in general) is the Crystal's wireless aspect for roomscale. I can tell you, once you do roomscale wirelessly, it is really hard to go back to tethered... that is the main reason I don't use my Aero for roomscale and instead still use my Vive Pro. Anyway, once this headset becomes more a reality I'm sure reviewers will cover it, and if it does deliver I'm sure it will generate the excitement that you expect. We all want VR to grow and this headset has the potential to do that. Time will tell I guess.

I hope your right about the Quest Pro being a game changer... but I don't personally see it for entertainment.

    The Aero "just got" some competition. 10 months later, still no competition.....lol

      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      I think your comment should be "10 months later and the competition is not available at retail yet" because the Crystal is real, about to go to mass production and it does look to be delivering on the promises it made. I think it will be in the market at scale by the end of Summer at the latest. We will see LOL.

      @Get Your Game On The point is the title of "Just got competition" didn't age well. It's not even competition until you can buy it. That's not your fault but Pimax's terrible way of communicating launch dates.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      @@buenasondas1147 Yep I get your point... my point was something was being made that could potentially compete with the Aero vs. nothing even in development that can match the Aero, so I guess take it as you want. This isn't anything new in the VR space... products take a while to come out, hell look at Deckard. But you are right, Pimax doesn't communicate well for sure. Really not an argument here and I stand by my original statement that the Crystal will give the Aero a run for its money. Appreciate your comments.

      @@GYGOtv Regardless of our discussion about your title, I'm looking forward to this headset. Do I wish it did the same thing at 1/2 the weight and bulk? Yes, but we won't see that for awhile. Are you interested in the Bigscreen VR as well?

      @GYGOtv  Рік тому

      @@buenasondas1147 Ahh the weight, yes my concern as well but heck I guess I needed to work on my neck muscles :) Also don't like that it discharges the battery even when plugged in but I guess that is an XR2 Chip requirement. Haven't done too much with big screen because all the other headsets had glare issues, this one might be better, especially with the black blacks!

    I friggin hate Pimax. They overhype and under deliver pretty consistently.

      Yep, pretty poor track record... I'm hoping this time they may have figured it out... but not holding my breath. If the headset actually delivers, I'm willing to give it a shot, but need to see it in the hands of non-Pimax folks first! Thanks for the comment.

    What he wants to say, pimax stole aero model and make it cheaper.

    • @GYGOtv
      @GYGOtv  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Nexe... No I don't think Pimax stole anything from Aero, they had the headset designed for the 12k already. Plus the Aero didn't originate the aspherical lens design, it's been around since the beginning of VR, I don't think the Pimax headsets will be anywhere near the quality of the Aero, and until somebody tries it I don't even know if it's going to work. I guess time will tell. One thing most of my viewers know, if I want to say something I will, you always get my honest opinion. Appreciate the comment.

    Pimax is dismal. Company has zero interest in VR. Would not go near any of their products.

      Thanks for the comment REZZA2020. I think many people share your view... and deservedly so. For me, this headset has so much potential, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until someone actually gets to try it out... Then I'm sure I'll be disappointed :) Figures are crossed that maybe Pimax has learned something from their past mistakes... but I'm not holding my breath, that is for sure. Time will tell I guess.

      @@GYGOtv I viewed the CEO, his dispassionate disinterest in the interview is all I needed to know. You are more forgiving then myself. I do know they share zero in common with the likes of Varjo who are pushing the very limits of VR technology.
      It is a very old fashioned marketing trick- go overboard with specs and features- yet, consistently deliver terrible products.
      I think its important to consider the ecosystem a person is part of when buying a HMD- and its future prospects.
      Sorry, but I really do dislike everything this company stands for. On the positive, your reviews are unique and helpful. Thank you
