The messaging in this song is very powerful. It is explicitly about 'lovers' but the lessons can be applied to any lasting relationship. These are my 3 major lyrical sections and what they mean to me: "The light that fueled our fire then Has burned a hole between us so We cannot seem to reach an end Crippling our communication" - Passion for each other can bring you together, but that same fire directed over disagreements can destroy. "The poetry that comes from The squaring off between And the circling is worth it Finding beauty in the dissonance" - This verse highlights that it is NOT conflict that breakdown a relationship. It is HOW you confront & resolve conflict. There is beauty if the differing of two minds Through communication and compassion we can build stronger bonds. "Cold silence has A tendency to Atrophy any Sense of compassion Between supposed lovers" - This is pretty clear... avoiding conflict, stewing over past arguments, silently building your anger and resentment erodes our connections.
New digs! On the LP journey they go from angry and frustrated to a sort of awareness in Lateralus where they're chill again. Pretty interesting when someone clued me in to listen with that in mind.
