- For Nick Lee, owner and operator of Studio Signs Co., sign making is both an art form and a family business.
His father, Melvin, ran the company since 1985, with Nick joining much later, and the father-son duo has been responsible for many of Portland's most eye-catching signs, including those from McMenamin's.
In 2018, Nick bought the business from Melvin, and continues to build upon the legacy and history of this small, family-owned establishment.

Love it all! The craft, the skill, the lettering, the history, and wish I’d been born into your family for all of that and the martial arts too! Best wishes for your continued success and happiness.
What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing it in a creative and interesting way. Kudos to this family of artists.
Great story! Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Your work is fantastic.
So cool! Sign making is such an awesome craft! Thanks for video!
Great Job Nick!
Thanks Andrew! Hope to see you sometime this year!
Extremely cool to see this video; I was a billboard sign painter for nearly 20 years; but sadly cannot paint anymore due to physical injury. Fantastic work and thanks for the video!
Love your whole story! Keep it up!!
Beautiful work. I love that it's a truly successful family business. Thanks for sharing your story!
Amazing!🥰
I've long been impressed with hand painted/carved signs. When I was young (I'm 60), it was still common for commercial vehicles to feature hand-painted artwork. Such vehicles always stood out to me, and even weathered examples had their own appeal given their unique patina. The family connection of this particular shop makes a good story great. Hopefully the interest in and demand for this awesome craft continues to grow. Awesome story all around.
I started my working life as a signwriter and at 62 I'm getting back into it after a long break. I wasn't sure I'd remember any of it but its coming back very quickly. As a result I've been watching a lot of UA-cam videos on people taking it back up or just getting into it.
As a left handed signwriter I was astounded by how many lefties there are in it now. I used to be the exception but now fell like I could get lost in the crowd.
Thanks for posting the video.
I love watching the history of my state and city of Portland.
Please post Nicks social media details so he can be followed.
I live near Vancouver, any of dads signs still around that you know of?
عمل رائع .
