This is so wonderful to witness. I trained as a signwriter, completing just as Charlie Dobson imported the first Spandex machines (UK here) and everything was changed. I carried-on with the brushwork but eventually had to go with it and buy a machine, then another. The competition though, just got so that all you were doing was earning enough to buy the latest equipment. The way things developed had another effect: people who knew nothing about layout and more especially, about letter spacing, readability and colour compatibility, just turned the high street so ugly. A bit of a metaphor for so many other facets of life. Seeing this has cheered me greatly. There's hope for the world yet!
I've been sign painting now, for 35 years myself. Educated in art school in Chicago as well. My father was a sign painter for many years too. This video is the best documentary on the industry I've seen to date! I wish this gentleman & family all the best!
Yep...I did a 5 year apprenticeship in Portsmouth, England in 1965 and still doing it to this day. Along the way Iv'e learnt airbrushing, computer graphics, murals, canvas painting and loved every minute of it...most commercial craft on Earth, always somebody wanting something done and never been short of orders.
Matty Watson I am amazed at people that can freehand sign painting my talent is very lacking I do vinyl and some pounce pattern painting but that’s it.
Thank you for the video, we can learn so much from our elders if we just watch and listen. Really awesome work Ches, great respect from the son. Beautiful
I am a window painter looking to learn how to paint quality hand painted signs. Could you suggest a book that would list the common tools needed for this art form? I have ordered a few brushes I use with my window painting. I have know idea where to start.

People are visually exhausted from digital perfection. The human being has imperfections and this is perfect as it is. Greetings from Chile.
there is beauty in imperfections, it is what makes it unique! cheers

I love doing signs and lettering on buildings. SO many people comment and ask questions. It's fun for me.
Almost teared up when I saw the goose island work. So beautiful.
Signwriter here in Australia. Wonderful story. I've been completely sick to death of vinyl for my entire 30 year career. Writing by hand, every day
