I hadn't heard of the "Stinky Rotten Eggs thing" I'm sure we just used Baby Powder "Talc" to stop sticking. I was trained as a Singwriter starting my apprenticeship in '77 but due to health haven't worked in the industry for 23 years and only getting back into it just for fun recently. I'd love to see a video on the egg thing.
We also used to to add a little Varnish into Yellow sign enamel to slow drying while using a test painted piece elsewhere to check when it was ready for gilding. This allows you to complete all the writing and then all the gilding.
Hi Luke, thanks for the comment. Yeah you use egg whites. Not sure if they have to be rotten... but mine certainly are! Will probably show that in a video soon.
I have used the chalk powder but never get a crisp edge . Maybe im just rubbish at it 😂😂. Will try the egg white method see if it works for me . Fingers crossed x
Beautiful work Ben,I'm not a Signwriter but I did a part time course one night a week for 2 years so signwriting is a hobby for me,I love it,I'm still learning so your videos are a great source of information for me,thanks.
I am curious about the yellow lettering medium. Was it gold sizing? I ask because most sizing I have used is semi-clear. My only guess is you sized the yellow paint, but I am really stumped, because the "gold" stuck to the yellow. Many thanks for sharing a great video with "Good Mistakes".
Hi mate, the yellow enamel is 1shot imitation gold paint. I would not normally recommend using a colored sign enamel for gilding in this way. But 1shot imitation gold stays open (seemingly on purpose) making it an option for gilding. Traditional gold size is nearly clear and is more standardly used. I've know people to put a bit of imitation gold into gold size to make it more visible. Hope this helps.
Hello Charlotte, I think it is more to do woth the way the chalk is applied. I have traced mine out quite hard from the paper. If I had used a pounce drawing, the chalk would probably fly away as it was not pressed into the surface.
Hey scottie, I'm using the alpha 6 fr8liner. Truth be told I'm not a huge fan of it for this kind of work, and look forward to trying a new one I recently got.
great video!! - im about to paint on some skateboards and use some gold leaf - to get the leaf to stick you just use the tackiness of the gold paint? - no kind of size or anything?
I would normally use a size. Or mix a size with a small amount of imitation gold. But imitation gold 1shot can perform most small tasks. I would not substitute with other colors or brands as they can dry too quickly.
I remember the first time I ever had to use one-shot. For me as an artist seeing that paint just cover a surface with one stroke literally made me laugh out loud in pure joy! New tech's or not, your result is very, very cool! Oh and by the way, regarding to the see through gilding glue. One drop of imitation gold in a small cup holding the glue, will fix that problem, and then it's very easy to see how far you've gone. :-) Other than that. What kind of material are you painting on?
It was always such a good paint. Things have slipped din recently years and I mostly use ronans 1 stroke now as it dries much quicker and is less smelly
Thanks bud! I havent tried burnishing this in anything harder than cotton balls. I cant imagine it would burnish like real gold somehow. Maybe worth trying a sample!
It certainly will if left exposed to moisture. Truth be told it's mostly sat tucked away. I have an art show soon so I may see if I can sell it there, I'm seriously lacking in space 😅
Hi mate I was just wondering what you used to get the "sketch" lines down on the wood and how they were so resilient to the burnishing of the gold leaf? I assumed the secondary dropshadow lines were going to disappear but they hung in there. is there a special type of pencil?
Hi pask, as the lines were traced on kinda rough the lines stayed on. Can be a blessing or a curse sometimes if they show. It's frustrating when a pounce line can get brushed off.
Hi tilly, I used egg whites in the background and let it dry. Then I paint and gild and the gold won't stick to the background. Sometimes gold is imperfect anyway but you should get good results with that process.
Hiya, inusenimitation gold paint as it means that any minor misses will be less noticeable as it is a close colour. Other colours may show more. Although technically if the paint is tacky most oil enamels should be good.
That is pretty cool I love the sign. Is that sign for indoors or for outdoors? Would you put some sort of varnish over that if it was gonna be outside?
This sign is for indoors. Not really sure what to to with it yet. It's sat behind my work desk at the moment 😅. It's on the ever increasing to-do list.
Hi Cornish, I use a plotter with a pen tool. From that I can make line drawings from a design software. Comes it very useful, especially if you have logos or designs you need to match closely.
A bit of vaseline on the hair (side or back of head) is what I was taught.
When I was a signwriter..
For picking up loose leaf.
Hi James, yet vasaline is perfect for it. Probably should have mentioned in the video. But thank you
LOL pushing the boundaries of technology a true artist can overcome a machines line and graphic work love it

It might have been Talc and or French chalk to prevent sticking my memory is slowly coming back to me lol
Could also be the same thing.

Looking good 👍👍
Do the next one on glass and in reverse, It would look awesome, Great job you did there.
Thanks pal! My next video will be reverse gold leaf if that's your thing

Thats awesome Greg, really glad your enjoying it. Lettering can be frustrating, fun and fulfilling... often all 3!
Thanks for watching the videos!
Loving your videos, your work is outstanding.
Thank you so much Raymond.
I enjoyed that. Good work.
Thank you!

So I can use gold 1 shot enamel as a base to stick my gold leaf to ! I just ordered dux sizing glue ! I’m new to this art form
p.s. great work
Thanks pask
I enjoy that is good work
Shadow Kaolin Powder for nonstick around gold leafing applications
What's the name of the stick you're using when you're painting the letters
It's called a mail stick. Thanks for watching!
@@theletterhead great videos
Is seems like plotter's cutting letters
Always outstanding sir👍👍
Thank you Yasir! Much appreciated.
Wow... amazing artwork 👍👍👍👍
Love from india
Thanks so much anil!
Does it matter what color you paint with in the areas to be leafed?
Yeah, most colour's won't work. But 1shot imitation gold does for this. Otherwise, use a gold size
How do you brush off the excess gold without brushing away your chalk lines?
Hello Charlotte,
I think it is more to do woth the way the chalk is applied.
I have traced mine out quite hard from the paper. If I had used a pounce drawing, the chalk would probably fly away as it was not pressed into the surface.

Hi can i ask what brush you used to outline the lettering.. Great work btw love it

Do you stick that goldleaf directly on 1-shot paint? Im suprised the paint dont dry off before you put the goldleaves on 🤔
Nice work!
It has to dry off to a certain amount of tachiness
What size is it?
Around 28"x20" I can't remember to be certain.

I thought composition leaf will oxidize if its not too coated. How do you keep that from happening? Lovely sign and loved your video !
It certainly will if left exposed to moisture. Truth be told it's mostly sat tucked away.
I have an art show soon so I may see if I can sell it there, I'm seriously lacking in space 😅
A varnish would help though if needed for protection.

I know this is a rookie question but what type of bored do you put your signs on
Hey there,
This is just painted 1/8" plywood.
How do you mark the outline through the paper?
The paper will have charcoal or chalk o. The back to trace the lettering from a drawing or skecth
Very nice work mate! i have a question,
What is the yellow enamel that you used before to apply the gold leaf?
Thanks in advance.
That is 1shot imitation gold.
Hi Lewis what did you you prep your board with to get a crisp edge on your gold leaf ? I always end up with a jaggy edge . X
Hi tilly, I used egg whites in the background and let it dry. Then I paint and gild and the gold won't stick to the background. Sometimes gold is imperfect anyway but you should get good results with that process.
@@theletterhead I've been learning for the past year, and Ive never heard of the egg thing? Can you share the process? Im so intrigued now lol

Might sound dumb… is that a marshmallow ur using to remove excess leaf?, cuz that’s what it looks like
Hey there,
As fun as it sounds. Unfortunately it is a cotton ball.
@@theletterhead ha ha yeah… I’m a lil dumb! 🙏
