Ted, A few years ago, My son wanted to be Cyberman from Dr Who for Halloween...With no store bought costumes available, I turned to the cosplay community for help. It opened up my eyes to this wonderful of prop building...I only stumbled on yours and Bills Channels/Websites in recent months (Which I have no idea how that happened) Since then, I've binged watched your entire catalog. I was so inspired by both channels that I'm in process of converting a large space in my basement into a builders workshop. Which is great fun in its own right. ( I've outfitted it almost to a tee with tools from your last video) The long winded point I'm making is: your talent, creativity and most of all your generosity of sharing your knowledge, inspires alot of us new builders to want to make something out of nothing...So with that, I say Thank you!
Thank you so much and thanks for subscribing.
Great video, Ted. The inclusion of foreign glues was very considerate, and no doubt helpful. I also liked how you were able to point towards other videos you did demonstrating the use of the mentioned products (like the Kwik Seal); it makes this video a great appendix for a long time yet.
I have a few tips you can add to your 3.0 video
4:04 Sanding sticks, I put different grits on each side like 80/120 220/320 (Less sticks to mess with) I also use PVC tubing cut in half with sand paper inside and outside for inside and outside curves. Also use square tubing the same way.
You can heat up PVC pipe and press it in 2 directions to make it into square tubing.
For holes, I use a 16 piece hole saw kit. I take a thin piece of plywood and cut my favorite sizes into it and use it as a guide so I can take out the center drill bit to cut discs without the center hole in them.
I keep coming back to both your tool videos and the listing that follows them. It helps immensely. Thank you for being so generous.
Thank you for watching and subscribing.
Kershaw sharpener may be one of the best suggestions you have ever given me Ted! Thank you! :)
Yes, they are a life saver.
I love the community you and Bill have created. Thank you two for the wonderful tutorials!
Thank you for subscribing.
So I thought my blade was fairly sharp, but since I am building up my arsenal of tools, I got that Kershaw blade sharpener today. Did a few swipes with the blade and then my kids asked why I was laughing. I have NEVER had a blade that sharp, soooo awesome to be able to make some really nice cuts. The blades are sharper than when they are brand new it feels like. Also got a gas mask and goggles, since I found out how much your head can hurt when you smell Weldwood contact cement for 30 minutes, yeah not recommended. Thank you Ted!!! Learning so much, and me and the kids are loving it!
Thank you thanks for subscribing.
Man that is awesome I was about to ask you about making a new video on this because 2 years you can learn a lot more about tools and tricks. Thank you Evil Ted Smith
Thank you for subscribing.
Thank you Ted for your videos. They have motivated me into becoming a foamfantic.
I purchased the Arm and Male Armor pattern. Very fun build!
Hopefully we'll see some leg/torso patterns :D
I'll work on that.
I just made my first prototype helmet yesterday using your patterns! Thanks for all of your tips in these videos!
Thank you for subscribing.
Pattex here in Thailand for glue, imported but available everywhere and sold as a shoe glue and all purpose glue. Love the stuff, incredibly strong.
As usual, thanks for those incredible and useful video Ted! In Italy the Barge is called Artiglio, is properly for shoes making
It is used for shoe making and leatherwork here as well. Always cool to see international fans. Thank you for your support.
Thanks for you teachings Ted!
thanks for showing alternative glue options for different countries. I looked for Barge all over the place and it is very expensive to get up here. another great video!
Thank you for subscribing.
I recall in an earlier episode you mentioned using the floor-mat foam for pieces; I've always wondered if the camping foam pads would work as well, or if the foam is of a different type that wouldn't apply itself well to that function. The main reason I ask is because I can get the camping foam locally much more readily than other types of foam, though obviously it's not worth saving on shipping costs to Maui if I don't get a workable product out of it.
Use whatever you can get your hands on. That's how I started. And go from there.
Thank you very much for mentioning glues outside of America. I'm from Croatia and it's pretty hard to find equal substitutions for all the tools you have (mostly glue and things like creature cast) . ^^
Thank you for subscribing.
Great video Ted! Thanks for giving ideas for alternatives in other countries, wasn't sure which contact cements were good in Australia.
Now you know!
I live in the UK and I've been wondering for ages why I could never find Barge anywhere, thanks for mentioning Evostik that will help me a lot
Oh man, thanks for including the german version of barge! I had difficulties finding the right one!!
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Im transitioning from watcher to maker this week. Ordered some barge cement yesterday.
Dude, awesome video. Just as great if not better than the last. Looking forward to more content man!
You think you could maybe use Bounce on Worbla? it would give it a nice smooth finish. Not sure if something would happen though.
Evo-Stik is what I got from B&Q after I Couldn't get Barge cement and the Alpha -Thixofix that Bill Doran told me to get -I made the Platform Boots from you,re video with it, Since I'm inexperienced I had to go over them with black Duct tape but they work a treat 🙂
Great video
Congratulations on 100k subscribers Ted!
Indeed! Well deserved!
Thank you.
Thanks!
will you please show us how to make power armor helmets out of foam, also a video on how you made that robot looking arm on that Guy in your intro would be super cool!
Hi Ted, your videos have always been helpful! Your work is always amazing. The question I have is now that Poly Latex 60 has been discontinued, is there a comparable alternative?
Yes, here’s a link for it. www.polytek.com/products/naturform-60-molding-latex-rubber
Hey Ted, another great video like always. Would you mind using Bounce (brushed on) in your next video so we can see it in action?
It's only 6 bucks. Get it and play with it.
Finally ted a new video
I got your patterns last month and they help me a lot starting off on how to make things from scratch like I wasn't sure how to make this armor piece for my chest plate so the template help me start it off :D good work Ted! and this list of material definitively going to shop for them :D
I do have a question, I am using cardboard building up my cosplay, what would you suggest that I use for sealing and smoothing out?
Ted I just discovered the best way ever to seal a paint job but you know more than me so I want to share it. It's called Minwax indoor/outdoor Helmsman Spar Urethene. It comes in both spray and brush on, and different finishes. It's flexible and VERY durable, and probably could be used to seal foam too but I haven't tried it. It is similar to floor wax (but way better.)
Thank you.
Hey Ted, thank you so much for this channel, I have started making a Deathstroke suit from the Batman Arkham games and it's been a real struggle trying to fumble my way around but the tips and information you provide have given me a renewed passion for it. I am after some advice tho.
I am coating the pieces in a carbon fibre look a like vinyl wrap and while it is self adhesive what can i use to make sure it sticks down fully? Thank you. Donk.
Love the update, Ted! Could you add the band saw to the list in the description? I wasn't able to find it in there. :(
Thumbs up number 666! I can't wait to get the Werewolf suit I'm working on finished. I've just started cutting my soft foam for the skeleton of the suit.
Any tips on applying my foam skeleton (exaggerated chest, back, thighs, shoulders and clavicles) to a bodysuit, while also keeping the form? I'm worried that the contact cement will stick it to whatever is underneath the bodysuit. I'll definitely run into the same problem when I go to apply the layer of fur over the entire costume. Fur is very accident friendly and hides fuckups, but I don't want to have to carve it off of whatever I use to hold the shape after applying an adhesive.
Hey Ted, I noticed over at Harbor Freight, has a 3pc 'Diamond Hone Blocks' for sharpening knives, bits, etc...
The 3 blocks are: 180/260/360 grit. The sharpener you use is 600 grit. Are these sharpening block too coarse to sharpen the razor blade on the breakaway utility knife? Thoughts?
Excellent!
thanks for given some international alternatives products ... love watching Bill Doran and your videos but also get concerned when we dont have the same products names in Australia
I'm doing my best to find different glue around the world.
I'm in Australia and up to now I've used Kwik Grip adhesive. I actually bought my first tin of Sika the other day, I'll never go back.
I'm glad I helped.
Hi Ted! You said the Bounce can be brushed on. Can you also spray it on with the Critter Spray Gun? Thanks!
I don't see what not. You might have to thin it down the a waster.
Thanks for this. If you are already comfortable using a torch is a heat gun even necessary? I have a feeling it could come in handy..
Yes, the heat gun is good for shaping foam.
Evil Ted Smith of course, thank you. I'm ordering most of my tools from your links. Very helpful videos
Thank you for subscribing.
Thanks as always Ted!! Band saw or scroll saw? Or both?
Hey Ted how would you make a foam gauntlet with armored glove. I already watch your video on how to make a gauntlet and shoulder armor but you didn't go over how you would make a glove as well.
This video was filled with priceless info, as always. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Oh, and what does sealing your foam do? I've never really understood it... and considering I'm starting my first foam project soon I should learn about it now. I thinking that bounce stuff is good for a bigger like me, right?
You have to seal it before you paint it. So it won't look like foam...
Hey Ted, in the video under the what you use to seal the foam with you have Well wood contact cement. I use one that is water based to glue my pieces together, can I use it as well for sealing?
The water base weldwood is a good expensive way to seal your foam, but not good for gluing.
Hey man! love your videos, keep up the awesome work. I have a question though, Would Lepage Contact Cement work for glueing the foam together? Having a hard time finding the right glue for my costumes. Ps: I live in Alberta Canada.
You can also find Barge at most leathercraft stores.
Yes, your right!
Hey Ted, quick question for you. The Poly Latex 60... how well does it hold up to bumps and folds, and how well do certain paints adhere to it once it's dry?
Paint sticks well to it.
Evil Ted Smith Thanks for your reply.
Ted, when cementing an edge together do you let your cement dry first or do it while it’s wet?
Angle finder... Your funny sensei, that's actually called a protractor. I only know that because I'm an engineer. love your vids keep them coming!
No, What I have is called a center finder amzn.to/2bu911H. This is a protractor amzn.to/2bgryzN
Young grasshopper.
Ted, do you thin Bounce with anything for your critter gun and if so what is your ratio? I'm going to be starting a Groot costume and I'd like to seal everything with a spray gun. I'm thinking the Bounce is the best way to go for sealing.
Great video, Ted! Are there any materials besides foam that these tools could be used on like wood, or is this video primarily for foam?
This stuff is new to me, so I don't know much about this. And thank you for making this video.
Hi Ted!! What kind of grey foam are you using for the demonstration in this video? I've been looking for something a bit sturdier than your standard floor mats
I have my supply list just below the video.
Great stuff man. Now I have to spend some money.
Ha ha. Yes, spend money.
I saw one of your videos on building a fallout armour which was quite informative but I have a darthvader helmet I have been meaning to use, so can you give me any pointers on how to make the fallout NCR helmet?
I love watching your videos! would you be able to make Edwards automail arm from full metal alchemist? any tutorial I find isn't all that great.
Hey Ted, do you have any suggestions on what to use to weatherproof items (preferably nontoxic since I don't have a lot of room)?
Just saw other videos which they prefer loctite glue than contact cement because its faster and easier. What do you think? I assume Loctite will be more expensive than barge cement
I believe that locktite is like super glue. That wroks well for detail gluing but I prefer barge for the big gluing jobs.
+Evil Ted Smith Thanks Ted
i use both Loctitie and contact cement as my go-tos for nearly all my faom builds. i use contact cement, Barge or Weldwood, to join large pieces of foam along seams and to hold complex curves. to add small bits of detail work with 2mm foam over a foam armor case i like Loctite b/c it works quickly and you can just use a drop or two to fasten small or thin pieces. i don't think there's one perfect adhesive for all cosplay builds, as some ashesives don't work on plastic, wood, insulation foam, EVA foam, etc. it's best to keep a few glues in your arsenal. personally as long as i have Loctite, contact cement, Super 77, and a hot glue gun i'm pretty well prepared to attach almost anything.
Ted there is a couple different kinds of barge cement are all of them the same there's a blue and green can Will these work equally well
I like the barge that comes in the red and yellow cans. The blue and green don't stick as well.
Great video. Any chance you could share the model of dremel you use? I was about to get one but I like how yours plugs in.
I have the link right below my video.
I was wondering if you could give a little more information on the Hot Wire Foam Factory Bounce. I've tried to find more about using it, but most info about it has it mixed with the foam coat. Do you apply Bounce by itself? How does it compare to other sealing materials?
Check Bills video on sealing foam ua-cam.com/video/ug6Rs06FEpk/v-deo.html
Thanks, I will.
What is the difference between the Poly Latex 60, the Creature Cast, and the Hot Wire Bounce? Can I just use any one of the three for sealing?
Yes, you can.
Is WD40 a good idea on any sharpener? The one I use is a 100 year old block.
If it's made of stone I'd recommend using water (it's a good idea to submerge a stone sharpener in water for a few hours before using)
I've thought about that, but the problem is that it's permanently set into a stained wooden case that I'd rather not damage.
in that case you can just put some water on there with your hand or a spray bottle. I do this when I don't have time to soak my stone.
as it is set in a wood frame it is most likely an oilstone...so use oil instead of water. Linseed oil is a good choice but use one that is food grade
braviart my dad has one that I use and we use baby oil, just add a few drops and then let the oil travel around the block.
Great video as always! I'd like to try the Bounce Rubberizer, do you use it alone or mixed with All Purpose Foam Coat?
I used in alone.
great, thanks for everything! ^^
Ted Great tool info. I've been using Barge cement for about 6 months and I find that it's getting Thick. Do you recommend Barge Thinner? if so how much to use. Thanks again.
Yes I do. Add just enough to bring it back to life.
I don't know if you've answered this in another video, but do you know of anything that will give a hard finish to foam? I've seen people use polyurethane resin and epoxy but I'm looking for something a little cheaper that will protect expanding foam from being dented or snapped and I don't want to buy thermoplastics to cover it.
I'm not a fan of putting any resin on foam. It always cracks, and once that happens you can't fix it.
For sealing or shaping foam with a heatgun, what temperature would you recommend? Mine has temperature settings.
I just go hot as I can get it.
Evil Ted Smith Thank you, going to dip my toes into crafting with foam and your channel is an invaluable resource. I've been subscribed for a while, but I finally have some ideas for costume applications.
Hey Ted, how did you make your glue pot please, I'm wanting to get some Evo Stik as I assume it's a liquid version of Barge, so I'll aim for that (in the UK here)
Here you go ua-cam.com/video/gPH-YMqSk5Y/v-deo.html
@@EvilTedSmith thanks, so what is the pot you have in this video, it looks different?
Hi Ted, how can we know we have to change the air filter of the respirator. Any way to clean up the filter? Thanks.
On the package it should tell you. What I do is write the date on it when I opened it. So I'll know how long it been in use.
+Evil Ted Smith Thx a lot for the tips.
Question: Can I assemble Foam pieces after sealing and painting them?
I'm currently working on a Megazord Cosplay, and I wanna seal and paint each individual piece separately(since they're different colors), then assemble them, however, I don't know if the parts will stick together after being sealed and painted?
Sorry, no. You have to glue them together before sealing.
Evil Ted Smith
DAMN IT!!! 😫
Well, guess I'll have to get a fine-tip Brush for detail then.
And thanks for responding. 😄
I was curious about using power saws for foam. Besides a bandsaw what about using things like a tablesaw? Ever tried it?
I have tried a table saw before on 1/2" floor mat foam. I used a standard multi-purpose blade and it worked just fine with clean cut (but not quite as clean as using a box cutter). I suspect a dedicated plywood blade (which has a high teeth-per-inch count) would yeild cleaner results. However, this is only speculation as I have yet to try it.
Additionally, as far as using other power tools on foam goes, running foam through a router table is generally ill-advised. The foam is too soft, despite a new bit , and tends to leave a very gnarled edge.
Cool. Thanks for the tips!
i'm sorry my english is bad, so you need those spraying things for coating just to protect am i right !? or does is have other purposes, help !
Hey Ted I wanted to ask if you still used plasti dip or if you switched it out with that bounce stuff, and if not can bounce be used to replace mod podge or do I have to use both.
I use Poly Latex 60 most of the time. Great stuff to deal foam.
hi wonderful jobs, im from mexico and im gona to introduce me on the foam im do thinks on fiber glass but is to many steps, mi question is what could be the contact cement from my country to glue the foam the barge cement not are here
the Poly latex 60 is kind of expensive, is there something that's like it but cheaper?
I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer for. I have an Atco glue well like yours, but how does one open it for cleaning purposes? Any help would be highly appreciated.
Watch my UA-cam video ua-cam.com/video/a6q2FgYLHPQ/v-deo.html
Must be the one video I haven't watched, heh. Thanks for the tip, boss! Love the content. Has made my cosworks so much easier!
First off thanks for making this video its extremely helpful. My question is, what is the name of the mat you use to cut on? I can't find one like it anywhere and currently just use wood to cut on
I have the supply list just below the video.
Yes I saw that I just didn't see the name of the mat you use to cut on on the list?
common name you can search for to find those mats is "anti-fatigue floor mat" or "foam floor mat" on amazon and home improvement supples stores. these mats are originally manufactured put down on the floor for people who stand all day at work to relieve leg pain from standing on hard floors. if you are in the US you can find them at Lowe's and Home Depot stores.
Thank you so much!!
Ted, or really anyone that's used the bounce rubberizer, is it possible to heat (either heat gun or hair dryer) to dry quickly? I'm just curious because I have last minute stuff to do and the event is in two days? (I know, I know... I shouldn't have waited until last minute....) Thanks in advance for the help!
Yes…check out this video..ua-cam.com/video/ug6Rs06FEpk/v-deo.html
Thanks for the response, Ted! Mine just arrived yesterday. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks Ted.
Ted is the floor wax still your go-to for sealing paint jobs on eva foam?
I also like clear mat acrylic for sealing.
In sweden we have Pattex aswell, but I find it doesnt really hold the foam together, I prefer the good ol CASCO contact cement.
Did you use the transparent or the classic? I had the same problems with the transparent but the classic sticks like no tomorrow
oh, it might have been the transparent! thanks!
I think casco works so well tho so I find no reason to switch
for the sealers does this allow you to paint over it
Yes they do
Hey Ted. I have a question, if you don't mind.
Where I live apparently 80% of the stuff you mention is way overpriced (your blade sharpener costs 130€ for example and a pot of barge goes for 120). I've found a substitute for everything but kwik-seal. I was tempted to get regular white acetic silicone but I'm afraid it won't be the same. Could you suggest an alternative?
I'm not sure whats available in your country?
Does anyone have other brands of the Welwood water based contact cement (I am from Germany)? It sound like you would use it similar to the Barge cement, except it is not that strong and not that toxic. I heard you can use it in a spray gun which would be great.
I also need to know if Polylatex 60 can be painted with acrylics and if the shelf life is really only 3 months (that would be a big downside).
Yes you can paint on it. Latex will keep for more than 3 months. Just make sure your lid is back on air tight.
how much will this cost. i'm asking because i want to make my own costume but i don't have a lot of space and money.
The supply list is just below the video.
Can the bounce rubberizer be tinted with acrylic paints?
I'm sure you could. Try it!
Thanks for the clue about what glue I can use when I live in germany (y)
You'er welcome.
Ted, in your Tested video about helmets, what is the glue you have in a bottle (Drop)?
Jason Elliott I was also wondering the same thing.
Hi Ted
I was thinking about buying the Head, arms and shoulders combo i think it is from your website, but i was a little bit confused about how the patterns come to me. Once i purchase them, can i just download them and then print them off multiple times? or do they get posted to me. I am definitely going to buy them if it is the first one, but i may not if it is the second option.
Cheers;
Cos
Yes they come in more than one sheet. You tape them together and cut them out.
+Evil Ted Smith so once you buy them theyre downloadable?
Would you recommend using a hot knife?
For cutting foam? Why when a sharpe knife works so well.
Yup for cutting foam. I was just wondering =) Thanks for all of the video btw I have watch them and still re-watch them for when i am creating cosplay.
will barge hold up during cons and will it stick to worbla id like to make a mixture of both in a costume to make it light weight but stronge and angular
also what kind of paint do you use on the foam
Yes barge will definitely hold up during cons. I've not had a piece fall apart due to the glue once since I've used barge. I've never used worbla though so I can't comment on that
+Ann Account cool thanks
do you have a link for the both mask in the video
Yes, I have links just below the video.
Hey Ted, im going into college, and i was wondering, if i wanted to do prop design as a career, what class would it be called. do i need to go to college for prop design?
You don't need to go to school for it, but if you want to get some classes in, check out your theater departments Tech classes. I know the class at my school was just called Prop Making but they may be called different at your school. Also stuff like Costume Design, Costume Props and even a Set Design class would be a benifit to you as it gives you a wider range of skills to work from. I know all those classes really helped me out.
thanks ted!
Thank you for subscribing.
does your contact cement come apart when heating the foam I'm using Dapwood
Let the glue dry for an hour after at least before heat sealing it.
In terms of the Bounce rubberizer, I wonder about how much you need for a given amount of foam?
A little go's a long way.. Buy so try try it out. I's only 6 bucks for the big bottle!
+Evil Ted Smith thanks!
Does the bounce go on grey like you showed us or is it a clear coating?
Yes it drys clear.
Where can you get that charcoal filter mask?
I have my supply list just below the video.
I was wondering if you could do a mandolorian helmet tutorial
check out Raw Kustoms
+Joe Di Donato ok thnx
Is there an alternative for Kwik Seal in Germany?
I'm not sure. You should ask what German cosplayers are using to patch their seams.
Will do! Thanks for all your videos and tutorials! Very helpful :)
Ted, this may come off as a stupid question... when cutting out a circle, how do you get it to look as perfect as possilbe without fraying and i mean larger circles say 3"+?
Thanks!
tried to get that Bounce and enter in "EVIL TED" but didn't show up as a discount said ERROR
Try EVILTED no space
ya tried, but still error, no worries i'll give it a whirl
WORKING FOR ME
Hello my friend I really like your channel and videos but have a little problem I do not speak English and would love to know what products are using to finish the pieces you show thank you for your attention hope you can help me thanks and success 💪 👍
All my products are listed below the video.
@@EvilTedSmith thank you very much for your attention congratulations on your channel see you soon 👍💪
I can't get Poly Latex 60 here, can I use a plain casting latex instead?
I have a link for poly latex 60 just below the video.
you show the German kind of adhesive but I says transparent. the only thing I can get here in Denmark is the gel kind, will that work?
I have been told by German cosplayers that is the glue they use foam building.
thanks I'll try the one I can find and thank you for the videos you make they help a lot
