What did you think of the film?
Masterpiece
Get up first
Everyone watched the film will have different Stories, different climax and different ideas about NNM
React to Thankam trailer.. Produced by fafa🍺
Creative explosion
Two dudes in USA is giving the best review for a malayalam film. We live in different times now.
The bus is a drama trope bus. And in hotel scene while checking out he says he like the quote from the receptionist and told him that it is good for naming a drama . May be he was thinking about a drama story and he got it through his dream.
The two folks who left midway, at end, their seats are vacant in the bus. That means it wasn't a dream.
Good observation. Rick came close but the actual 'totem' happens to be this couple and not the dog.
Also adding to this, when Mammootty falls asleep inside the bus in the beginning it is his wife sitting next to the window. But in the climax scene it is Mammootty by the window seat. Again indicating that the plot might have actually happened and it was not just a dream.
Superb film. What i gathered was that the entire village was a dream James had, as we can see both him and the driver awake while the rest are sleeping in the last shot.
Save this comment: LJP is gonna hold the oscar one day for the best director. 💯
Trust me he won't not because he is a bad filmmaker,he don't care about Oscar.there is so much thing and spend more money to get into nomination to know more watch the movie and the Oscar goes to,and I don't think ljp is that kind of guy who is craving for international attention. If indian back him there might be.
And if he doesn't, it's the Academy's loss! :)
Is oscar is qualified to award him
"Rorschach " director "Nissam basheer" can also makes wonders.... waiting for that
Hope😍 Let the world see his talent 🥵
My dad who's already watched it 3 times just made me watch this movie just so he could learn my interpretation of it. And what I think is that, (apart from everything rick and korbin has mentioned and which I agree to 100%),
The character Mammootty plays, who is a prejudiced person from the start, takes into heart the quote he read, about sleep being a metaphor for death, falls into a slumber, wakes up embodying an entirely different person who is a native of the village. He is not aware of the fact that he's either dead or has been missing for years, and carries about his daily routine unaware of the stares and indifference he's been receiving. But throughout his journey he's being reminded of why he's a stranger to the place, the blatant accusations of him being a fraud, villagers not buying milk from him and them saying they have a replacement, him not knowing about the temple that was being built, the waiter not knowing that he hated chutney with his breakfast, and the icing on the cake, him realising that his barber who he frequented often has been dead and that the person staring back at him in the mirror is not himself. He goes back home with this realisation that if his people, his family, his neighbours, his friends cannot understand and recognise him, then what exactly is he there for? Why is he living on? What is the purpose if not love and the bonds you make out of that emotion?
The frame where he starts to fall asleep, and later shows a bunch of crows could probably be a representation of the South Indian Hindu belief that crows are the messengers of death, and right before he wakes up, there's a background score of something burning which I think could be associated to a burning pyre indicating that this time, he's leaving for good, that he doesn't need a physical medium to be present with his people and that he's letting Mammootty go. The shot of the shadow still being there indicates this.
This is following a montage of shots of a
tamilian standing in the field, next to the road, next to the bitter gourd farm, which I believe is the person who used Mammootty as a medium to get back to his home, his roots, his family.
And even if Mammootty did dream everything while still being seated in a bus, I think it probably was that the tamilian achieved what he wanted and completed his journey just using the consciousness of Mammootty who was sleeping and falling into an abyss with such thin line between reality and the supernatural.
But the dog, who sensed his master even though he looked nothing like him, ran chasing him because he didn't want to lose his master again. The dog could feel his master's soul, again a beautiful metaphor for how physicality or your appearances are nothing but just a medium, and what connects two people, two communities and two different species is infact nothing but love.
Very good analysis! 👏
I love this review, gold in the comments section
Can't believe I read all that
I am from Maharashtra Marathi region and would have never seen this marvelous movie if you hadn't reacted to it's trailer. Thanks for recommending one regional Indian movie about two different Indian regions to audience of completely another region.
Kerala is so lucky to have good films like this the audience are so intelligent and the best audience in India
Malayali spotted 👍😕
The film was made for Tamils and Malayalam audiences though

..... Mammootty who improves himself every time, like the glow of a lamp that is polished daily....
I watch you guys with so much awe and admiration. The way you guys decipher it even though you are not from the region is phenomenal.
I saw you guys in the theater and wanted to come over and say hi but was feeling very nervous😢. Hopefully get another chance in another theater 😊

Ljp is just so freakin good. So damn good in making films. You guys better watch 'Amen' staring Fahadh Faazil another masterpiece from LJP which u have missed.
Also if u r awestruck by the performance of Mammootty in this film, guys I assure it's just the tip of an iceberg. The most versatile actor ever in Indian film industry
I think they have watched it
But haven't seen any review about amen
💯💯best actor
I dont know whats there in Amen. I expected LJP's brilliance but it ended up as an ordinary watch
Pls don’t gonna miss mammootty 2022 filim “Rorschach “guys
Cinematography by Tamil Cameraman Theni Easwar, who did award winning films like Karnan & Merku Thodarchi Mazhai
And Peranmbu
Merku Thodarchi Malai (western ghats)
So What it's tamilan ???
@@UnkownCat-r6bevery comment is crying mallu mallu why not mention the good cinematography
LJP s the best Indian director these days.. Yes.. There s Maniratnam, SSR.. But LJP s jus brilliant!!!Nd wen he gets combined with Mammootty, thats magic..For an actor who has portrayed over 420+ characters in a career spanning 51 years, to come up with somethng like this, that s sensational..
@bb Mari is amazing. Mind blown at Karnan. What a unique blend of anti caste narrative and film making. A genius filmmaker. And to think this was just his second film!
Since I am originally from Tamil Nadu and have seen 1960s, 70s movies, this movie connected with me well - as I could relate, understand and enjoy the Tamil back ground (TV) dialogues and songs which are deployed throughout the movie. Lot of reminiscence - Mammootty's performance is out of this world.. His expression when he looks at the mirror - though lasts only a second - still haunts me.. Mammootty had courage not only to act but to produce this masterpiece..
Though it's a Malayalam movie I guess Tamil audience would be able to connect more. Particularly the cases where the Tamil movie songs that we hear in background almost all the time in the village.. songs lyrics or movie dialogs in TV are matching to the scenes in the movie!
Even a tamil movie can't be made with this much detailed tamil movies bases references.
The crew has so many Tamils including the cinematography
Aadiya aatam enna in the end 😂😂😂😂😂
One thing I noticed that supports the theory that incidents in the movie never happened is that the couple who was sitting behind Mammootty and his wife, who they emphasize in some scenes then later left the group in another vehicle is still present at the last shot from the side of the van. And the dog thing should be to throw us off. Dogs always chase vehicles.

Like Rick said it is an emmersive experience. It is an exact opposite format of a commercial masala film, yet it was thoroughly entertaining, thought provoking and definitely witty at moments. LJP is a genius, but the technical side of movie is also phenomenal.
But we like masala films only and Malayalam movies are 😴
@@rishabhs4956 yes when it comes to entertainment Masala films shine. But in an artistic point of view craft movies shine. We need a balance of both for the growth of Film Industry.

The dog is the symbol of Dharma ( way of righteous living according to ancient scriptures). In Mahabharat the dog followed Yudhishthir the elder Pandav on his journey to reach the heaven.
Nice interpretation
how could a person who gambled, lost everything, everyone including his wife goes to heaven - !!
@@Altersci that's why we can't judge a person by his latest act or deed , he lived a life and will have to take into consideration what he has done in his whole life. How much good he did to those who were around him.
Theni Eashwar is the cinematographer of this film. He has previously done Mammooty's tamil movie Peranbu ( which you have seen ) and Puzhu. His name was suggested to LJP by Mammooty.
The cinematography was top-notch. Each and every frame tells a story. I loved few frames very much. What a masterpiece movie. The Cinematographer deserves an award.
Your review is the best I have seen so far even though you are not Indians, great. Much better analysis than malayalam and tamil reviews. Rick is absolutely right .. bang on that dog following the bus.. infact I could recollect many shots and points because of your detailed review.
You guys are on point about everything related to this movie; loved the movie!. This is LJP’s best film so far, E.Ma.Yow being the second best and City of God & Amen being my other favs. His other movies were a bit too chaotic for majority of movie goers and Churuli was also shunned for its profanity by the same segment of audience! Hoping to watch “Nanpakal “ again when it releases on OTT platforms. Still breaking my head to come to a conclusion……… 😃

SUPERLY EXCITED FOR LJP MOHANLAL MOVIE
😂😂😂😂
100% true This movie is a phenomenal ❤️ it may win for Oscar for the best feature film (Foreign language)
You should watch Rorschach it was mammootty at his best
This film is about the full realization of an existential crisis - the realization that no matter who or what you identify with, you (even the deepest or most abstract form of you or especially so) is still alone and will have to live with that feeling for eternity no matter who or what you associate with on a temporary/limited basis. Mammooty's expression when he looks at the mirror encapsulates that feeling perfectly - likely the best acted few seconds in celluloid. The Tamil song that plays at the very end of the movie translates to 'Relatives will accompany you in your house, your wife will accompany you to the streets, your son to the forest (cremation rites are typically performed by the son in a forest). Who will accompany you till the end?'
mf said "celluloid" when it's literally not shot on celluloid. it's insulting to people who actually shoot on celluloid
It's a common refrain to mean 'motion pictures as a genre'. Look up a dictionary once in a while. And say hello to your mom.
I think the bus driver slept while driving (he was drowsy and the bus was going wobbly & Mammootty was holding tightly) and they crashed. Now everyone on the bus is dead; while they were returning after performing the fabulous drama(which is the happenings at the place)
The first scene where the guy comes and wakes up others, is before the play. The second time the guy wakes up others, is the next day when they were leaving back to Kerala after performing the play.
The missing guy is the soul of the lead Tamil character played by Mammootty and when Mammootty leaves, the character stays in the village.
The dog was following the dead in the end.
Thus is the best interpretation I have come a Ross
Theni Easwar is the cinematographer of films peranbu, karnan...

I was watching this as a drama rather than a movie coz that was how the film was made and it should be.....such a classy film
OSR I should say you guys are the reasons why I started loving Indian films. Started analysing cinema.... keep up the good work...
2024 planned movie of LJP + Suriya combo..
fingers crossed 🤞.
Nobody is credited with original scores.. everything is taken from old tamil malayalam movies.
3 possibilities.
1. It is a drama troupe. They may have acted it out.
2. It may be a dream.
3. James may have actually become the other guy.
Please watch the movie again. Fast forward to slightly before 1:36:23. Pay attention to the far right side of the screen, also connect that with the next scene that comes after this scene.

Btw nanpakal nerathu mayakkam is a great attempt, even choosing that frames itself is great. And the movie bgm is old film songs and dialogues.
No words..such a brilliant movie.
I watched this film 2 times and each time its different feel and I am going to watch 3rd time to get another feel.
Pls watch bhoothakkannady of mammooty, LJP says that’s one of the worlds best performance.
If you had a good miday sleep .then you dont need any explanation for this film..the film is all about its name..he just portrayed a mid day sleep of a middle class man in to the screen..like when you sleep on the midday ..you would have the craziest dreams..and after you wakeup ..you will be depressed about the dream.. eventhough there's no nothing particular in the dream..and there would be some stories in the dream too ..created by our subconscious minds..after the dream is completed you would wonder. What was that! Some times you could see some unknown person in the dream too..and u try to remember where i had seen that person in my life ever before..the thing is you wouldn't recover them from your memory..really midday dreams and very complex and they all are little plays playing by our subconscious..like you will say some unknown language you never know .and tends to understands it..i dont know if anybody had this experience..but i had..so i think this movie was all bout that .and they brillianly portrayed it..
So when you try to find a explanation about those dreams..somany facts connect with something..like that would be one of your fantasy or jus a thought you had at one really tiny moment when your life struggled you..and the people would be somebody you stared at a one sec but very long before in your life. And the content of the dreams would be some story your subconscious made with somany things it picked up and stored in your memory..even you would nt realise that it were there..or even you might not remeber it..but your subconscious does.. because every memory is geting stored there and wouldn't even ever know its there.. that could be some fantasy ,some emotions, some concept, some aspects about peoples around you..or what would they do or say in some situations..etc..and dreams are the proof that our unconscious remembers everything..
So ljp was trying to portray a simple mans midday dream ..and it was brilliant .and excellent thought.. ❤️❤️
Please watch and review “Rorschach”next guys. It’s another Mammooty movie on Disney 😊
One thing you guys probably could not experience is the choice of the content in the tv that the old lady watches , which kind of narrates in parallel . Those are very specific choices

Maybe u guys missed out one detail which is in the last shot. Saradhi theaters is the name of the bus which means its a drama troop bus.
Feeling so lucky that I could follow both Tamil and Malayalam to get the essence of the movie…I must watch this movie few more times to get into the depth and immerse into the characters

Watch BHOOTHAKANNADI, I would say the best performance of Mammootty. phenomenal⚡️. LJP said in one of the interview that he would like to see Mammootty in that kind of roles.
LJP's next project is with Mohanlal. The shooting is already started in Rajasthan.

Regarding the bus and the name of the bus. LJPs dad owned a drama/theatre company. They had a vehicle with the same name. I suspect that when Lijo was young his dad used to take him for pilgrimage on the bus.

A lady sticking cow dung on a wall near to the public way, most of the main characters walked through that way ,,,,
A malayali person asked to that lady about james "Did you saw a handsome man passing through here " , She replied " Some people passed through here and some people passed away from here - whom you are searching for ......

Mammootty on a roll ‼️
Rorschach, nanpakal and next with the great Indian kitchen director.
This filim have only two close shots
Malayaalm always make realestic film 🔥
My theories
1- It was all an afternoon dream (because in the last shot, everyone was still sleeping in the bus except James)
2- James got possessed with Sundaram's spirit and went to the village for the closure (because before waking up, he dreamt of a man with a blurry face )
When they pronounce nanpakal nerath mayakam ,at that time someone smiled from backseat 🥰😇 stole my heart
The movie that i saw more dreams than movie scenes😂
Actually there weren't any composer, he took out the rights of old Tamil songs. Brilliant ❤️🔥
I think it could be real. Sundaram who is dead comes back through James and gives closure to his family and acceptance of death to himself. That shadow could be Sundaram leaving after that closure,(they show black clouds clearing up as James wakes up the second time, as himself), the crow symbolising a soul whose last rites was completed by his next of kin(rice finally served to James/Sundaram by his daughter),as is done in some traditional beliefs. Also the dog recognising his master, though James doesn't look like sundaram. So could be real.
as you guys said so much to talk about this movie. Sheer brilliance! Enjoyed your review 👌🏽

[SPOILERS] Firstly, the concept reminded me of an old ad for Greenply Plywood - which I realised was the inspiration for the movie (ua-cam.com/video/eq2AltfZZiU/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SachinSurendran ). Mammootty- OMG! he was amazing! There were a couple of scenes- I became absolutely emotional.. The scene where he pours down the milk, or when he says- "This is where by body will burn.. this is my land..".. and when he says- that his daughter only eats with him.. and he has taken her food without him.. I was sobbing so hard! In my head, I thought- probably Sundaram's soul felt he didn't fulfil his duties and was struggling to move on.. he came back- only to realise that the world has moved on without him.. his daughter has learnt to live without him.. anyone who passes on- they pass on, for their duties are in fact over.. but it can also be interpreted- that the mother probably felt she needed a closure.. and he was brought back to give her that.. ah! This is such a gem! the previous LJP movies, there was chaos- masterful chaos.. but here- chaos is still present, but hidden beneath a beautiful stillness.. Loved this! The dog in the end- reminded me of Dharma- (interpreted as what is to be, the natural order of things and truth). In Mahabharata, at the end of the story, the 5 main characters and their wife want to ascend to the heaven and keep climbing up the mountain. Each of them fall and when asked why, the eldest and the one considered most righteous- Yudhishtir responds with each of their vices being the reason for their downfall. At the end, only him and a dog that follows them from the beginning are left.. it is said that the dog was Dharma. I believe that the experience "cleansed" and "absolved" Mammootty and when he resumes his journey now, only "Dharma" is there.. Ah- I could go on forever!!
Hi - pls watch and review Rorschach
