The bus is a drama trope bus. And in hotel scene while checking out he says he like the quote from the receptionist and told him that it is good for naming a drama . May be he was thinking about a drama story and he got it through his dream.

Good observation. Rick came close but the actual 'totem' happens to be this couple and not the dog.
Also adding to this, when Mammootty falls asleep inside the bus in the beginning it is his wife sitting next to the window. But in the climax scene it is Mammootty by the window seat. Again indicating that the plot might have actually happened and it was not just a dream.

Superb film. What i gathered was that the entire village was a dream James had, as we can see both him and the driver awake while the rest are sleeping in the last shot.

Trust me he won't not because he is a bad filmmaker,he don't care about Oscar.there is so much thing and spend more money to get into nomination to know more watch the movie and the Oscar goes to,and I don't think ljp is that kind of guy who is craving for international attention. If indian back him there might be.

My dad who's already watched it 3 times just made me watch this movie just so he could learn my interpretation of it. And what I think is that, (apart from everything rick and korbin has mentioned and which I agree to 100%),
The character Mammootty plays, who is a prejudiced person from the start, takes into heart the quote he read, about sleep being a metaphor for death, falls into a slumber, wakes up embodying an entirely different person who is a native of the village. He is not aware of the fact that he's either dead or has been missing for years, and carries about his daily routine unaware of the stares and indifference he's been receiving. But throughout his journey he's being reminded of why he's a stranger to the place, the blatant accusations of him being a fraud, villagers not buying milk from him and them saying they have a replacement, him not knowing about the temple that was being built, the waiter not knowing that he hated chutney with his breakfast, and the icing on the cake, him realising that his barber who he frequented often has been dead and that the person staring back at him in the mirror is not himself. He goes back home with this realisation that if his people, his family, his neighbours, his friends cannot understand and recognise him, then what exactly is he there for? Why is he living on? What is the purpose if not love and the bonds you make out of that emotion?
The frame where he starts to fall asleep, and later shows a bunch of crows could probably be a representation of the South Indian Hindu belief that crows are the messengers of death, and right before he wakes up, there's a background score of something burning which I think could be associated to a burning pyre indicating that this time, he's leaving for good, that he doesn't need a physical medium to be present with his people and that he's letting Mammootty go. The shot of the shadow still being there indicates this.
This is following a montage of shots of a
tamilian standing in the field, next to the road, next to the bitter gourd farm, which I believe is the person who used Mammootty as a medium to get back to his home, his roots, his family.
And even if Mammootty did dream everything while still being seated in a bus, I think it probably was that the tamilian achieved what he wanted and completed his journey just using the consciousness of Mammootty who was sleeping and falling into an abyss with such thin line between reality and the supernatural.
But the dog, who sensed his master even though he looked nothing like him, ran chasing him because he didn't want to lose his master again. The dog could feel his master's soul, again a beautiful metaphor for how physicality or your appearances are nothing but just a medium, and what connects two people, two communities and two different species is infact nothing but love.

Since I am originally from Tamil Nadu and have seen 1960s, 70s movies, this movie connected with me well - as I could relate, understand and enjoy the Tamil back ground (TV) dialogues and songs which are deployed throughout the movie. Lot of reminiscence - Mammootty's performance is out of this world.. His expression when he looks at the mirror - though lasts only a second - still haunts me.. Mammootty had courage not only to act but to produce this masterpiece..

One thing I noticed that supports the theory that incidents in the movie never happened is that the couple who was sitting behind Mammootty and his wife, who they emphasize in some scenes then later left the group in another vehicle is still present at the last shot from the side of the van. And the dog thing should be to throw us off. Dogs always chase vehicles.

This film is about the full realization of an existential crisis - the realization that no matter who or what you identify with, you (even the deepest or most abstract form of you or especially so) is still alone and will have to live with that feeling for eternity no matter who or what you associate with on a temporary/limited basis. Mammooty's expression when he looks at the mirror encapsulates that feeling perfectly - likely the best acted few seconds in celluloid. The Tamil song that plays at the very end of the movie translates to 'Relatives will accompany you in your house, your wife will accompany you to the streets, your son to the forest (cremation rites are typically performed by the son in a forest). Who will accompany you till the end?'

I think the bus driver slept while driving (he was drowsy and the bus was going wobbly & Mammootty was holding tightly) and they crashed. Now everyone on the bus is dead; while they were returning after performing the fabulous drama(which is the happenings at the place)
The first scene where the guy comes and wakes up others, is before the play. The second time the guy wakes up others, is the next day when they were leaving back to Kerala after performing the play.
The missing guy is the soul of the lead Tamil character played by Mammootty and when Mammootty leaves, the character stays in the village.
The dog was following the dead in the end.

If you had a good miday sleep .then you dont need any explanation for this film..the film is all about its name..he just portrayed a mid day sleep of a middle class man in to the screen..like when you sleep on the midday ..you would have the craziest dreams..and after you wakeup ..you will be depressed about the dream.. eventhough there's no nothing particular in the dream..and there would be some stories in the dream too ..created by our subconscious minds..after the dream is completed you would wonder. What was that! Some times you could see some unknown person in the dream too..and u try to remember where i had seen that person in my life ever before..the thing is you wouldn't recover them from your memory..really midday dreams and very complex and they all are little plays playing by our subconscious..like you will say some unknown language you never know .and tends to understands it..i dont know if anybody had this experience..but i had..so i think this movie was all bout that .and they brillianly portrayed it..
So when you try to find a explanation about those dreams..somany facts connect with something..like that would be one of your fantasy or jus a thought you had at one really tiny moment when your life struggled you..and the people would be somebody you stared at a one sec but very long before in your life. And the content of the dreams would be some story your subconscious made with somany things it picked up and stored in your memory..even you would nt realise that it were there..or even you might not remeber it..but your subconscious does.. because every memory is geting stored there and wouldn't even ever know its there.. that could be some fantasy ,some emotions, some concept, some aspects about peoples around you..or what would they do or say in some situations..etc..and dreams are the proof that our unconscious remembers everything..
So ljp was trying to portray a simple mans midday dream ..and it was brilliant .and excellent thought.. ❤️❤️

LJP's next project is with Mohanlal. The shooting is already started in Rajasthan.

Regarding the bus and the name of the bus. LJPs dad owned a drama/theatre company. They had a vehicle with the same name. I suspect that when Lijo was young his dad used to take him for pilgrimage on the bus.

    My theories
1- It was all an afternoon dream (because in the last shot, everyone was still sleeping in the bus except James)
2- James got possessed with Sundaram's spirit and went to the village for the closure (because before waking up, he dreamt of a man with a blurry face )

I think it could be real. Sundaram who is dead comes back through James and gives closure to his family and acceptance of death to himself. That shadow could be Sundaram leaving after that closure,(they show black clouds clearing up as James wakes up the second time, as himself), the crow symbolising a soul whose last rites was completed by his next of kin(rice finally served to James/Sundaram by his daughter),as is done in some traditional beliefs. Also the dog recognising his master, though James doesn't look like sundaram. So could be real.
as you guys said so much to talk about this movie. Sheer brilliance! Enjoyed your review 👌🏽

[SPOILERS] Firstly, the concept reminded me of an old ad for Greenply Plywood - which I realised was the inspiration for the movie (ua-cam.com/video/eq2AltfZZiU/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SachinSurendran ). Mammootty- OMG! he was amazing! There were a couple of scenes- I became absolutely emotional.. The scene where he pours down the milk, or when he says- "This is where by body will burn.. this is my land..".. and when he says- that his daughter only eats with him.. and he has taken her food without him.. I was sobbing so hard! In my head, I thought- probably Sundaram's soul felt he didn't fulfil his duties and was struggling to move on.. he came back- only to realise that the world has moved on without him.. his daughter has learnt to live without him.. anyone who passes on- they pass on, for their duties are in fact over.. but it can also be interpreted- that the mother probably felt she needed a closure.. and he was brought back to give her that.. ah! This is such a gem! the previous LJP movies, there was chaos- masterful chaos.. but here- chaos is still present, but hidden beneath a beautiful stillness.. Loved this! The dog in the end- reminded me of Dharma- (interpreted as what is to be, the natural order of things and truth). In Mahabharata, at the end of the story, the 5 main characters and their wife want to ascend to the heaven and keep climbing up the mountain. Each of them fall and when asked why, the eldest and the one considered most righteous- Yudhishtir responds with each of their vices being the reason for their downfall. At the end, only him and a dog that follows them from the beginning are left.. it is said that the dog was Dharma. I believe that the experience "cleansed" and "absolved" Mammootty and when he resumes his journey now, only "Dharma" is there.. Ah- I could go on forever!!

Whatever the reason you guys do these reviews of movies made from & for a tiny, tiny piece of a state in southern India, it is astonishing how you pick up on the nuances that has missed even most people who speak malayalam.
That bit about the dog running after the bus being picked up by Rick shows a lot. It is one of those things that everybody thinks only they have picked up.
