A writing choice that unfortunately robbed us of developing the relationships in Cocoyasi at a better pace, making for a more satisfying conclusion to the show.
Coby, Helmeppo and even Garp overstayed their welcome with pointless nuisance and reduced the show's precious minutes, by extension diluting other plots.

For Shanks, I believe he nailed it. In the manga, most of the time, Shanks wasn't the type who radiated charisma and commanded respect just by walking. Instead, he seemed more like an approachable, normal guy. This is why he was bullied by the mountain bandits in the first place, and it's also why his moments of seriousness are so epic.

I completely agree with this. Charismatic Shanks doesn't happen until he's properly introduced as a Yonko. And even then, a lot of it ends up coming from us now knowing how powerful he actually is, and him performing certain fits. In the early stages of anime/manga, he looks very unimpressive.

exactly, specially when flashback shanks has to carry most of the weight with acting due to young luffy. the roughest part of live action adaptation is that its really easy for an adult to write a child that has a great way of performing exactly what you want them to perform. now in real life u can't expect a kid to actually perform smth. so in shanks shoes on the flash back he had to be the ground between his character, his crew, the bandits, what was going on, protecting, lecturing and inspiring luffy while also leaving him, prob forever, and heading out knowing his big treasure was eaten by a stray kid with a marine for a grandfather, and he prob knew it was the nika fruit. in the end of the series when mihawk goes visit shanks we get to perfectly see his charisma and good humour

Time was one of the major things *keeping* people from reading/watching one piece, or at the very least, remembering minor details from less important parts like in your case.
Analyzing this one piece live action via direct comparison to the manga using the manga as a baseline is a mistake imo. You can especially tell that he did this because he not ONCE said any change made was actually better than in the manga, which is highly unlikely to be the case. @@CorwinTheOneAndOnly "Analyzing this one piece live action via direct comparison to the manga using the manga as a baseline is a mistake imo."
you get old enough, you'll wise up to the idea that live action is a different medium than comics/manga/cartoons and that what works in those mediums do not work when you have real people interacting with each other.
with animation or just drawings, Exaggeration is possible to create ideas in stories not possible with real people while in live action, there is an umbrella of reality or "being grounded" that needs to happen.
fights can't last 20 episodes. People aren't doing poses. Pacing needs to change to fit a tv show format. A lot of exaggerations need to be reined in. Which is why translating 1 to 1 is quite literally a red flag. What needs to be translated is the heart of the original IP. The essence of one piece. That freedom, heart and adventure. That charm. And that is the reason why OPLA was successful. Not because it is following every panel and every line and every story beat. They were allowed to stray and be creative while maintaining what OP is.

I absolutely want a season 2, but I also think that a season 2 is exactly what this adaptation needs.
Baroque Works saga is just naturally better suited than East Blue to be a season-long arc. Things like having a single villain to gradually build to with Crocodile, plenty of time for the crew to interact and bond, and a much more focused story.
East Blue is an anthology, and most of the arcs are somewhat disconnected feeling. Trying to make a season-long throughline was nearly impossible, as seen with the weird way Arlong is used. Also, despite each arc being quite short, they all do a ton of world-building and each establish tons of new concepts and characters to the story.
However, a lot of that introduction is finished now, so we can focus more on the story and characters instead of having to dump so much exposition. Going from EB to BW, the audience already knows how Devil Fruits, bounties, Den Den Mushi, the Grand Line, the Warlords, the Marines, and pirate crews all work. They've seen how the world is both extremely silly and weird yet simultaneously dark and twisted. So a season 2 doesn't need to explain all that. We can just show characters like Chopper, Wapol, Robin, and Ace and immediately understand their powers. We can hear about Log Poses and seasonal islands and BW and make connections to how the Grand Line was described in Season 1.
I don't just want a second season, I NEED one.

At this point, it seemed a tad too weak-looking. Anime version had him blowing through the bottom level of AP with a nice explosion of debris, the Ep of East Blue version even added the extra flair of multi-hits during Mouton Shot that harkened to the manga panel, but LA just seemed like they watched the anime Absolam fight and took a page from the lackluster start of that onslaught (attacking the camera with separate reactions from the enemy).
I REALLY hope they give my boi some nice flair in a S2. Hello. A theory of mine about the wierd inclusion of Garp is that in the anime there seem to be a piece of Garps character development that is missing. He goes from hunting pirates, capturing Roger, and training Luffy to be a Marine, to just sleep through his job and cheering Luffy as a pirate. I think that they wanted to capture this moment on screen instead of off-screen. So we see that he emotionally goes from angry to super happy when luffy deflects that canonball. He is starting to root for Luffy, even if he is a pirate. We also have Koby's dialoge about letting Luffy be a pirate that might pay off later. And the inclusion of Garp at the execution of Roger shows what fate he fears for Luffy if he becomes a Pirate. Other than that i agree that the whole marine plot and Garp seems off.

The inclusion of a B plot itself felt like the writers just needed a main antagonistic force chasing the crew throughout this first season, but choosing Garp, Coby, and Helmeppo to do that B plot seems like a safe choice by the writers because they know they can neatly wrap up the B plot with these characters ending up at the exact place where their manga story starts.

They've added some really nice interactions between the Straw Hats which you don't see in the Manga. But Oda is the master of characterisation which goes on in the background, subtle motivations behind actions which are implied, certain ways of standing or dressing which indicate something which happened in their past. The show often doesn't include this subtlety. I'm glad we're seeing these interactions which weren't in the more action focussed Manga, but they tend to be a little more explicit than Oda

Whiskey Peak I could seem them scrapping altogether and instead merging it with Little Garden. In Little Garden they'll probably scrap some of the Baroque agents and trim the action (too many expensive devil fruit moves). So possibly two episodes for LG, and then another 2, maybe 3 for Drum Island. That's 6 episodes.
They could intercut Alabasta during the setup which would save them time to establish the situation once we actually reach Alabasta (like they did with Garp in s1), which could allow them to trim Alabasta down to 3 episodes. Otherwise I agree that 4 episodes would be best.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if they get 12 episodes for s2. 10 is a reasonable ask though I do think they could do it in 8.

I think instead of the B plot, we could have benefit from longer character development, watching the crew sailing together rather than teleporting to each new island, even padding out the time with a sequence of a line of their journey on a map.
We don’t mind shorter decisive battles, perhaps pace them to have some talking or exposition in between.

One thing that I was not particularly happy about is that Luffy knew about Nami’s backstory in the LA, whereas in the manga he never found out. When he saw Nami cry he didn’t need a reason to help her, he just went straight to Arlong (having 0 idea who he was) which for me is a big character moment for Luffy, that was lost in the LA.

Uusopp is by far the best casting of an anime character I have ever seen. Idk about his acting, because I haven't watched it yet, but just looks wise. The hardest character to cast on paper because of his crazy exaggerated features, but somehow the actor just has the perfect face to convey his facial shape without it looking off or weird.

The vast majority of the criticism fans of the original have essentially boil down to "it was better in the manga/anime", like your point about Luffy's flashback. And I'm part of that. Neither the loss of the arm nor the handover of the hat really hit with me.
But seeing people who don't know One Piece watch these scenes they actually do hit if you're not familiar with the original. The scenes are good on their own, it's just in comparison to the original that they're lacking. I've come to think that many of not most of the issues with the LA are just fans not being able to separate themselves from the original.
For Nojiko and the village not knowing about Nami's deal, I've done a 180 on how I feel about this. Originally I didn't like it, but I think it was the right decision for the LA. Child abuse hits a lot different when real children are part of the scene than in cartoonish 2D. If the village had known about the deal I would have really questioned how a village full of adults thought it was okay to leave a 10 year old child with a murderous psychopath who hated her just for her race and had already proven himself to be cruel and violent. Even if they didn't know that they kept Nami actually chained to the floor, that whole situation would hit a lot differently in live action especially without the time to really flesh it out. "Village sacrifices 10-year old girl to a monster to save themselves" is the plot twist of a horror film in live action.
Ben Beckman is the only real issue I have which I can't get over (and I realise the hypocrisy to what I said above since new viewers couldn't care less). It wasn't just the casting, it was also the script and the design. It's like all departments collectively decided that they needed one instance were they all failed together to show people how bad things could have been.

Wait, wait. I just watched it again and it did not seem like Luffy was getting "completely demolished" by Arlong in Baratie. He lost, but he landed several good hits that were hurting Arlong, and even had him on his knees at one point. There was even a part where Chu and Kuroobi looked at each other worried because Arlong was taking good damage.
So I thought that was handled well. It made sense that Luffy was able to fight on par with him later on (when was even more motivated), precisely because he didn't do terribly in the first round. In Baratie, they were both beating each other until Arlong gained the edge.

So these characters who serve no purpose after they survive sure death cheapens the impact it’s supposed to have. In the live action it’s tragic because they’re actually dead, so I really like that change.

You mentioned Gene 7:23 and I hadn’t really thought about it before but he was the character that sold me One Piece. I walked into the TV room when my daughter was watching Baratie and the way Gene interacted with Sanji was incredible. I had never seen a character developed with so much maturity in an anime. I had seen a lot of anime at the time, so this isn’t as unusual as I thought it was, but back then I loved it. Gene was obviously on the bad guys side but he wasn’t a bad guy. In fact he was kind of a cool dude. Someone I’d want in my side. So now I’m thinking back I’m a bit disappointed that he was fleshed out more in the live action. But I’ll always have anime Gene to fill my character Gene needs.

Definitely worth it!

I think the fact that they changed that Cocoyashi village did NOT know about Nami is a huuuuuuge mistake. For me, manga/anime Nami has an amazing revelation when they tell her they knew alongside the lines of "we wanted you to be able to escape if you ever wanted to, not to be attached to us". Nami grew up alone and thinking she had no friends and no family anymore, and in the manga/anime she suddently realises, she's always, always had the whole village with her. Stripping live action's Nami of feeling that overwhelming love from her village... Just doesn't feel right. This is actually the change I hated THE MOST in the whole series :(

Yes. It gave the village another dimension and personality. That they were worth fighting for. That is the backbone of the whole Help Me scene and removing that made the live version weak.
It’s like removing the narrative of the minks secretly keeping Raizo and never giving him up even if they died. The “Raizo is safe” wouldn’t be iconic without it.

    • @theassortedhobbyist
      @theassortedhobbyist Рік тому +4

What aggravates me the most about this change is that it COULD’VE worked if there had been more time dedicated to flesh out Nami’s relationship with the villagers and show at least Nojiko and Genzo having some kind of confused doubt instead of fully believing Nami’s facade to a fault. On top of that, the scene at the village at the beginning of episode 8 falls flat for me because it’s trying to have an emotional resolution between Nami and everyone in Cocoyashi, but we don’t see their reaction over the revelation like we do for Nojiko and their revolution is clumsily shut down so that it’ll be only Luffy and the gang fighting the Arlong pirates. For as much as I think this adaptation succeeded in areas that exceeded my expectations, the Arlong Park episodes kind of drop the ball as a climax to this version of the East Blue Saga because there is a ton going on in terms of story detail and not enough episodes to execute them in a way that feels narratively satisfying for this version of One Piece.

I think that luffys character had to much screen time on that episode, and that time could have been used to develop nami's relationship with the village more. But i think on it's own, if I'm distancing myself a bit from the source material, it works for new audiences but i get it
