To help control the shot gun, try leaning forward a bit and make sure it is firmly secured to your shoulder. Putting some tension on your shoulder muscles will help reduce bruising. Glad to see you out here providing content. 😊
not quite true, 12 has more payload, more chance of hit with pellets, bigger slugs. 12 gauge can do anything a 20 can including less recoil with handloads, or shorty shells (if the gun can run it like a break open, ksg, etc...)
Great work. Your trying to learn new things. Everyone believe that a hall or room is 30ft. But wrong most of the time. Use #4 or #5 high brass shell no matter the gauge. Most hits will be within 10 feet because the suspect will be moving towards you. Learn point shooting, holding low and use your body to adjust aim. Like pistol shooting, close range with no time to aim, hold by side and just use the body to aim left, right, up or down. Been shooting since I was 8 years old. Now 54, and I still learn things 😊

I got a Remington 870 Tactical Express for my first but this was just before their bankruptcy and I was unaware of the QC issues. I didn't do any real research and got it on pure name recognition but as it turned out, that name was degraded. I got it fixed up pretty easily but that I had to replace things like the extractor just to get it to function properly was sort of annoying. After doing a bit more research, I got a 18.5" Mossberg 590A1 which is solid out of the box but I still modded it to my liking. Magpul furniture, barrel clamp and sling, aluminum follower plus a stronger mag tube spring from Wolff and a Surefire mini scout light. At this point, it's pretty much zombie apocalypse ready. 😁 As for the practicality of using a shotgun for home defense, there is pretty much nothing more devastating in a single shot than a shotgun at close range but they do pack a punch even for a guy like myself who is over 6' tall and over 200 pounds. I practice a lot with my Mossberg. The only thing I shoot more often is my .22LR firearms. I'm pretty close to a 1000 rds through it at this point and I can handle the recoil but that said, while I have it just a few steps away from me as I type this, the one I have within arms reach is a Glock 47 9mm handgun with 21 rd. mags. Much easier to grab and use than the boomstick. You mentioned drones. While shotguns earned a fearsome reputation in the trenches of WWI with the US Army, they really weren't a thing in the trenches of Ukraine because most soldiers have some form of body armor. But what's old is new again it seems. Shotguns are reportedly making a comeback to use against those FPV drones that have explosives strapped to them. Those little drones are fast and hard to hit but shooting at them with a shotgun better then trying to hit them with a rifle.

I keep the ol' CZ Hammer Coach leaning in the corner with some shells hidden nearby, for certain types of emergencies, and because I like looking at it. Might have time to get a couple blasts with that and then switch to the G19. But if I have an AR or pretty much anything else ready to use, I'd go with that first.
Hi I live in Arkansas and have a DP12 shotgun, it is a double firing pumper in that you can fire twice per pump from twin 7rd tube mags if you'd like to try it out. It takes a bit of distance for buckshot to spread out so if they're within 25' or so there's hardly any spread at all if you can aim.
The benefit of the spread helping with your lack of accuracy has more to do with vitals as opposed to the misconception of hitting the target in general. The last thing you want is rounds or pellets going off target, that's no good. So the idea is if your aim is off an inch or two from the heart or central nervous system you can still score hits on them or at the very least cause enough trauma to the body that they become completely incapacitated.
I think that the takeaway from this video is this: Shotguns are ok if you are big/strong enough to handle them. Not so much if you aren't. Which obviously contradicts the idea that they're the perfect home defense firearm.
100% the idea I was going for! The perfect defense weapon is the one youre comfortable using. Not everyone is comfortable with shotguns for a number of reasons
@@Boondockballistician Yeah, I thought that was what you were going for. And you're completely right. Not just for home defense, but for legal carry as well . I personally carry a Glock 29. Is that a serious option for most? I'd guess not. We must know our personal limitations . A carried .380 is superior to the 357 that you left at home.
@@Boondockballistician Have you tried using a bird's head and strap instead of a full stock? It sounds counter intuitive, but using your arms to absorb the recoil better distributes it over time rather than having it hammer straight I to your frame, making even light SBS much more comfortable to shoot full length 12 gauge.
I think that I own more shotguns than I do centerfires. I used a 12 gauge, ( Ithaca 37 ) when walking point in Vietnam, loaded with #4 BUCK shot. 00 buck is fine for deer, but doesn't penetrate underbrush very well, because the load has less pellets. I can attest to it's effectiveness in the real world as an anti-personnel weapon. The down-side to a 12 gauge, is, as you point out, the recoil, particularly with 00 buck.

I was about 10 years old the first time I shot a 12 gauge. My height made it necessary to aim between the top and middle strands of a barb wire fence to target a derelict vehicle on my uncles land. Wasn’t a very good idea cause when the barrel rose and hit the top wire it forced the butt down onto what little bicep I had where I got the full recoil. Hurt like heck and I felt like crying but I was able to hold it together.
9:45 As a bigger guy i have a theory that because of my mass the recoil is concentrated into my shoulder where a smaller person the recoil is spread out by pushing the torso back.
Oh absolutely. I have to lean way more aggressively to compensate. There's not much space for me to shoulder and the space I do have has little muscle/fat to absorb the recoil. It's gotta go somewhere🤷🏼♀️
Recoil? Winchester makes a “low recoil low noise target load” in #8 birdshot. It’s 7/8 ounce at 980 fps. You can hobo load it with 7/8oz Lee slugs, 4x0000, 5x000, 7x00, 9x1, or 18x4 buck. Or get a 20ga.
At least the numbers on a shotgun shell all mean something. Centerfire rifle calibers are just the closest number that sounds cool for marketing, and don't tell you anything about the actual cartridge dimensions. And there are far more centerfire calibres than shell sizes.
The action on that mossberg 88 will smooth out real nice after about 200 rounds. I honestly prefer the shotgun and love room clearing with a good ol pump action, but the last contract I worked, we only used AR15s and glocks because so many people struggled with the shotguns.
@BrassEvil yeaaahhh I don't use the mossberg anywhere near enough so I wasn't too surprised she was struggling. Definitely smoothed out as the day went but I thought it was important to show the struggle
There is definitely no way that you need a 3" magnum round at the short ranges encountered in your house. Even 23/4" rounds are really kind of overkill. I'm loaded with 23/4" rubber buck for my first round in my home defense gun. If that doesn't get an interlopers attention, the next 9 rounds are lead. I keep an AR type shotgun with a 10 round mag for my home defense gun.
I'd like to see you try a Mossberg 590S Shockwave shotgun with Aguila Mini Shells. You'll need to get the OPSol Adapter, about $20, but your shoulder will thank you!
I don’t enjoy shooting my 12 gauge pump- I do own a 16 and 20 gauge I haven’t shot yet but probably should- I just usually prefer to take a rifle to the range
@BoondockBallistician I liked this one! Now I am curious: I'd like to see if that 4buck load goes through a couple layers of drywall. It seems to me that, if you're worried about your shots going through walls, something like 4 buck would be less likely to go through them while still having enough mass per pellet to actually damage an intruder enough to stop them.
Hello, counter point Low Recoil #1 Buck like the Fiocchi Defense load is ideal & Minishell Buck mixed #1/4 gets deep enough at HD distances if u can run a pump w Opsel Adapter or PSA is working on it for their upcoming shotgun. You're tiny so maybe not for you (and why Braces is against ADA & Civil Rights against like half the population as an AR Pistol is ideal for someone your frame to be safe & manageable for HD women are on avg shorter w shorter arms etc) but try low recoil rounds first. My 2nd video on Buckshot Size Selection for HD is coming soon & you may want to check out the first and my Funny Old FUDD handed a Platypus tomorrow morning. Consider my Combatives Instructional as well. I'm curious if you work for an LE Department/Municipality type thing or what actually doing ballistics?
Yeah I entirely agree and admittedly exaggerated a bit for the video here. The point I was trying to go for is exactly what you said. Claiming a shot gun is the perfect home defense is foolish. Can't imagine grandma trying to run one. And the reality is, most people can't and don't practice with firearms as much as they should to be prepared for an emergency situation. So combine all that panic with lack of practice and now you have a recipe for disaster. Lol I can manage shotguns better than I did in this video but I also acknowledge that if you hand one to most girls, they'll handle it worse than I did here too. Also why I did my Size Does Matter video! Firearms are not and will not ever be a one size fits all
@Boondockballistician ok cheers...I suggest Low Recoil #1 Buck to men my size too less retained momentum for any flyers tigh enough pattern yet spread multiple organs usually 1 hit quitter. For possible multiple home invaders semi auto bullpup 12 makes sense and perhaps better if somehow you end up in a trial. Theoretically of course if 75-77gr was main stuff....if a couple extra were carried to be stashed or in vehicle wondering if 193 or 855 better...193 overall but talking people w plates one does better through steel & vehicles one better through ceramic ...not sure how long needs to be for both or if some staggered just for barriers or dudes w actual plates makes any sense? Again if main load is heavy. 77 vs 855 on cars? X39 shines a bit better there on the cheap Thx
Those 41 pellet no 4 buck 3” mags are no joke, definitely not a fan of that recoil. Also for recoil management with a shotgun, make sure to place the butt higher on your shoulder. Also also, the pigtails are a good look for you.
My suggestion, use a 20 gauge shotgun instead of a 12 gauge. The weapon is almost as devastating on a target, with much less recoil. As a law enforcement officer I used a 12 gauge shotgun, but if given a choice, a 20 gauge would have been prefered. Almost as much damage with less problem. Try a rubber buckshot round as number 1 in a magazine for home defence with standard buckshot (2 3/4 inch) as backup. You do not need 3 inch shells. They just kick more.
if you're good with a shotgun and collateral isn't a concern/you have wax slugs or frangible ammo of some kind. they work. in ban states like California where it might look really bad if you were to use a 30-round mag in a scary rifle for self defense, 10 rounds of 12 gaue beats 10 rounds of pretty much anything else.
Yeah absolutely don't disagree at all. I guess the point I was more trying to get at is there are reasons people might not like or be as comfortable with shotguns. There's other options that might be easier for them! Orrrrr lmfao yeah banned state limitations might make those decisions for you
@@Boondockballistician fair. for anyone not living in an anti gun state I would never recommend it. PCCs with like a 27 rnd glock mag and hollowpoints or something similar are a much better choice.
My first time shooting i was 6 years old. My dad gave me a 20 gauge. That shotgun knocked me down and by 8 years old i used a 16 gauge. And then 12 gauges
Ah that tiny bit of Little Nicky was nice. With shotguns it is a lot about technique to not get bruised that badly. Check out the push pull technique of the Haught brothers, which has been around since the 50s (Churchil''s game hunt). Not easy but worth it.
Um id suggest some one your size 410 or 28 guage mayby 20 and smoother actions than mossberg or Ak pattern definatly softer butt pads like limb savers mayby semi auto feed could bring you struggles and reduce your injurys .you took it like a trooper but those guns are a handful for more than a few men .😊
@jjh9355 Super understandable. We can have a whole conversation on how different shotguns make a night and day difference on how each type of round feels too. The vepr I was using was wayyy more gentle feeling than the mossberg.
@timswitz838 I'll need to think about how to do it, don't want to do it now since it would be a fire hazard. But I feel like that would be pretty cool in the winter with some night vision!!!!
Shotguns must be aimed. It's a myth that the shot spread will take care of any problem. The shot spreads gradually out from the muzzle to 50 yards, or so. Close in, it must be aimed at your opposition. Another piece of advice is to buy one that doesn't have a pistol grip if you expect to use it in combat. The grip doesn't help, and in fact, tends to get in the way, while aiming in a combat, or defensive situation. Hip firing shotguns and expecting your opposition to be lifted off or thrown back when struck, is Hollywood stuff. Rarely, if ever, the effect in real life. But they do make a mess on impact.
You know what I would love know ??? Where or should I say WHEN !! Did you find a box of 00 buck shot for 5.00 dollars ?? LOL I think you were still in diapers when those were 5 dollars LMAO 😅
While it seems your stance on shotguns is firm, consider trying a .410 or 20 gauge shotgun someday. Their effects on target is less than a 12 gauge. But 12 gauge is overkill almost all time anyway, so scaling down isn't that big a deal. Meanwhile the recoil is much more manageable.
You should A B test shotgun recoil with a weighted vest to see if being fat gives you an advantage. Try to work up to a 200lb total weight for the funniness factor.
ok, i watched this video 2 more times through. "hate" translates into have not yet learned. "someone my size" use the off hand to pull the gun firmly into the shoulder. maybe think of it like you have a sling over your shoulder attached to a rope about to pull a heavy thing forward. lean into it as they say.
The gun was jamming terribly. The hotter loads I think were expanding the case too much to let it eject properly. Only was happening with the one ammo type
In a guntube world of tacticool wannabees flashing 12,000$ rifles, this is such a breath of fresh air.

Recoil? Winchester makes a “low recoil low noise target load” in #8 birdshot. It’s 7/8 ounce at 980 fps. You can hobo load it with 7/8oz Lee slugs, 4x0000, 5x000, 7x00, 9x1, or 18x4 buck. Or get a 20ga.
Went trap shooting for the first time today and then this popped up. My shoulder hurts like hell too LOL. Lmao mason and some silly numbers
Howd you like it!?!?!
@@Boondockballistician It was really fun tbh the only downside is how sore my upper body is lmao
At least the numbers on a shotgun shell all mean something. Centerfire rifle calibers are just the closest number that sounds cool for marketing, and don't tell you anything about the actual cartridge dimensions. And there are far more centerfire calibres than shell sizes.
Lmfaaoo that's actually a very good point
The action on that mossberg 88 will smooth out real nice after about 200 rounds.
I honestly prefer the shotgun and love room clearing with a good ol pump action, but the last contract I worked, we only used AR15s and glocks because so many people struggled with the shotguns.
@BrassEvil yeaaahhh I don't use the mossberg anywhere near enough so I wasn't too surprised she was struggling. Definitely smoothed out as the day went but I thought it was important to show the struggle
you don't need a shotgun your killing me with that voice of yours alone, jeez
4:07 a 12 gauge is 12th a pound for lead divided again into the different ball sizes from my understanding
Hk SP5 is my home defense preference over my Mossburg 590 Shockwave. I do have a 410 also.
@SNKNostalgia Love MP5 variants, basically everyone I know has one, super fun to shoot. What type of ammo do you run in it for home defense???

Good intro for people.
Love some Vepr12. Wish there were more vids on it
Keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!!!
I found that a 20ga is much more enjoyable and manageable than a 12ga.
I would assume so but I've never been shot by either.
Would love to hear your thoughts on a PCC in home defense
My suggestion, use a 20 gauge shotgun instead of a 12 gauge. The weapon is almost as devastating on a target, with much less recoil. As a law enforcement officer I used a 12 gauge shotgun, but if given a choice, a 20 gauge would have been prefered. Almost as much damage with less problem. Try a rubber buckshot round as number 1 in a magazine for home defence with standard buckshot (2 3/4 inch) as backup. You do not need 3 inch shells. They just kick more.
I also hate pineapples.
if you're good with a shotgun and collateral isn't a concern/you have wax slugs or frangible ammo of some kind. they work. in ban states like California where it might look really bad if you were to use a 30-round mag in a scary rifle for self defense, 10 rounds of 12 gaue beats 10 rounds of pretty much anything else.
Hahahaha your dad just threw you right into it!
@@Boondockballistician I just subscribed. Been enjoying your channel. Keep at it
Ah that tiny bit of Little Nicky was nice.
With shotguns it is a lot about technique to not get bruised that badly. Check out the push pull technique of the Haught brothers, which has been around since the 50s (Churchil''s game hunt). Not easy but worth it.
Awesome channel..subbed
Im pretty sure a fursuit would slow birdshot to even less whelming speeds
I'll be your huckleberry, furry filth
thats when I evolve into SSF3 (Super Sayafudd 3) and you meet the fastest trigger of the west and very soon afterwards a .500
Um id suggest some one your size 410 or 28 guage mayby 20 and smoother actions than mossberg or Ak pattern definatly softer butt pads like limb savers mayby semi auto feed could bring you struggles and reduce your injurys .you took it like a trooper but those guns are a handful for more than a few men .😊

I am not a big guy. To be honest, I have been referred to as "the little one". I like my 20 guage. The 12 is fine, but I like the 20 better.
@jjh9355 Super understandable. We can have a whole conversation on how different shotguns make a night and day difference on how each type of round feels too. The vepr I was using was wayyy more gentle feeling than the mossberg.
20 has more felt recoil alot of the time do to lighter shot guns and more 20 ga hulls are 3 inch and 12 is more 2 3/4
I want to see you shoot some Dragons Breath!
@timswitz838 I'll need to think about how to do it, don't want to do it now since it would be a fire hazard. But I feel like that would be pretty cool in the winter with some night vision!!!!

Great video, very informative. What kinda dog is that? Some sort of poodle?
@yingyangfitness Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it is a little-known German Poodle.
But they do make a mess on impact.
and the lenght is when the shell is fully extended not crimped its all a bit kakced
I was hoping for more commentary on the vepr
You know what I would love know ??? Where or should I say WHEN !! Did you find a box of 00 buck shot for 5.00 dollars ?? LOL I think you were still in diapers when those were 5 dollars LMAO 😅
Semi auto is the way to go for girls... and boys. Too bad there is no small semi made for girls or kids.
A shotgun for home defense is the best choice only for someone who doesn't train/practice.
You are wonderful. Are you KB's little sister?😂
Hahaha no but man I would love to get out and meet him!
@@Boondockballistician just challenge him to a game of Kentucky Roulette. 🤣
Try to work up to a 200lb total weight for the funniness factor.

that strap around the back of the buttstock i bet added quite a bit to the bruising, try a cushion next time

What was up with that pump?
@fcastpe4 not certain tbh, haven't used the gun much and just needs to be worn in I think. Was running a lot better later in the day!
My Mossberg 590 was locking up like that too. I had to send it back to Eagle Pass, Tx and now it (sorta) works better
ok, i watched this video 2 more times through. "hate" translates into have not yet learned. "someone my size" use the off hand to pull the gun firmly into the shoulder. maybe think of it like you have a sling over your shoulder attached to a rope about to pull a heavy thing forward. lean into it as they say.
i have a few friends who refuse to ever shoot a shotgun because some dude gave them a magnum high brass in a light single shot "as a joke".
Thought for sure this was going to be a Darwin Award winning video with that idiotic ground slam cycling...
The gun was jamming terribly. The hotter loads I think were expanding the case too much to let it eject properly. Only was happening with the one ammo type
Nice video, just do your homework.
