Master Laser Cutting and Engraving: How to Use Color Wheels to Optimize Laser Cutting Parameters

In this tutorial, laser expert Don from Trotec Laser Hacks walks you through a step-by-step process of using color mapping to create power settings and an entire spectrum of settings within a specific material. With the Trotec Job Control Laser Software, you can use up to 16 different colors by designing a graphic in your design software that matches those 16 colors. Then, you can assign a different setting for each color, allowing you to apply all these different settings at once with just the push of a button. Don shows how to create a color wheel with up to 16 different settings, ranging from 20 power to 95, and how to assign each one of these settings to a different power and job control.
In the video, Don demonstrates the differences between running a quick outline of the design and running all 16 colors to see the differences. By keeping the power constant at 100 and changing the speed from 20 to 95 percent, he shows how there is a big difference in each speed setting when you change one parameter but keep the others constant. You can also use this technique for cutting as well as engraving, and it doesn't just apply to speed or power - you can also do the same to dpi or z offset settings.
Using this color mapping technique can save you countless hours of trial and error testing, and it gives you a roadmap to each material setting and how you'd want it to look. Hello, I’m making a 10” diameter MDF wheel (1” thick) to use on a grinder for sharpening my knives. There will be one wheel loaded with silicon oxide to determine the blades edge profile and the second wheel will be loaded with polishing compound. The second wheel I would like to put equally spaced slots from the outer edge to 3/4” in toward the center. What I wish to ask is it possible to tell me the degrees of the arcs for you wheel. I would like to duplicate it to set the slots in my polishing wheel. Thank you.
