- I'm finally back to work! As schools open up again, I am so so SO excited to get back into the classroom to substitute teach. I'm working towards getting my Masters in Elementary Education and my teaching certificate so subbing has been an amazing experience in the meantime! Here's what I absolutely cannot live without when I'm heading to a subbing job. I'm happy to say that I've never found myself in a situation where I really needed something and didn't have it with me!
NOTE: I forgot to mention masks because I always keep these in my car, but I always take a mask with me to school now as they are required!

For Highschoolers you can do laptop stickers!!
Thank you for the amazing tips. I’ll be starting in two weeks and I never taught before. I’ll be a an annual substitute teacher. You really helped me figure out some things because I have no idea what to expect.
I’m finishing up my dual cert for elementary Ed and special Ed right now! I start grad school in the fall and will be subbing for the rest of the year!! Thank you for all this great information!! Best of luck to you in your studies!
So glad your school is back! Loved to see your bag! Great idea with the sub notes!
You definitely made me feel more confident before i start my sub jobs thank you 😌
Can you do a video of some emergency plan assignments? I have a few but am looking for more ideas
Watch this video!! ua-cam.com/video/ucFN0s5u6vg/v-deo.html
Are we going to get the video with the plans?
This video is so helpful. I will start subbing for our district right after fall break. As someone who likes to feel well prepared this will help me immensely.
This video was helpful especially the information on introduction and expectations. I’ve watched several of these packing videos or substitutes first day. None of them have really mentioned how they introduced themself and specific expectations. I really like the overall class prizes versus individual prizes. Thank you!
I'm late in commenting on this video, but I just wanted to say you sound like an amazing sub! You are so prepared and professional- I am very impressed!
Just stumbled upon this while getting ideas for substituting and here you are pre anti MLM videos! I’m used to watching you doing anti MLM and love them, and now I’m happy to have discovers this side of you! Hope you, hubby, and baby girl are doing well!
Hannah! These are great! I’ve been subbing too and I may have to swipe some of your ideas! I never thought about the prize system, that’s fantastic! 😃😃
This was amazing! You’re awesome!
Wow this was a great and inspiring video! I love all the prize ideas that you have and I'll definitely be borrowing those 😂
Love this. I'm planning to become a sub and have been making a list of items I want to have on hand. One thing is, I want to make separate go to boxes to change out, depending on what grade I'm assigned to. I'm honestly excited at the idea of becoming a sub and doing that while I am going to school for my bachelors degree.
I'm new to your channel and I loved it! I work in Education Support and I loved all your ideas. I totally agree with you also, a pen is a pen, they all pretty much do the same job.
I’m applying to be a sub in AZ right now, and this vid was SO HELPFUL! Thank you so much!
That was really helpful! I start my first day soon and wanted to be prepared. Thanks!
"It's a pen, move on!!" LMAO
Hi Hannah, thanks for posting this as i am also gonna be subbing for a class tommorow!!
Thank you for this super informational video! I was wondering if you can make a video talking about how you came up with the different sub plans for different grade levels. That's the part that is stressing me out the most, I feel like I don't know where to start!
Love the tally mark system I use it w/ my class helps to hold them all accountable for their actions
dollar tree erasers and pencils. 😀 thank u!
Great ideas! Love the stickers!
This is one of the best "sub" videos I have watched, You are really good! Please make more and share more of your tips and tricks! I believe the kids are really lucky to have you!..Also it would be awesome if you can share a link to where you we maybe can print out that paper you have where you put down to the teacher who was good etc.
love this so much!!!!!
Very helpful! I work at an after school care center for a school district. I have been meaning to get a whistle and stickers.
I had no idea you were a sub! I have been watching your MLM videos since you started making those! I love how you speak into detail about things and stay open minded. I have been considering pursuing a teaching degree as a second career. Can you do a video on why and how you got into teaching? I am just curious about peoples journeys into teaching if it was not their first choice. Love your channel!!
then there is me who just shows up and hopes for the best lol. But you are so prepared, like a dream sub! good for you :) Great video (:
Thank you so much!
Hi there! I came across this video and you bring great advice and pointers with the sub bag, thank you! I am planning on becoming a substitute teacher here soon. Like you, I will also be getting my credentials and masters (starting this fall) at the same time. Any pointers on balancing the two programs while substitute teaching? Just subscribed and looking forward to more content! -Scott
Thank you so much. I started subbing at my daughter's school! You gave awesome helpful tips, That will definitely help me. I sub for a second grade class the other day and wish I had the goodies because I had 4 boys that would not stop talking to each other or telling on each other. Plus when they were to get on the iPads. I caught them looking up fortnight or car pictures. My mom mode almost kicked in lol. So hopefully the next time I sub for that class I will be prepared better 😆
It’s amazing what stickers can do!
About to sub for the first time ever this Tuesday and I’m freaking out! Your video inspired me :) thanks! Do you make those assignment sheets yourself?
That’s an awesome free bag
Thank you so much for this video, i have a job offer to become a substitute teacher, gave me so many great ideas :)
Great tips!! I’m considering becoming a substitute teacher.
Thank you so much for your advice 🌹
I am about to accept a position as a district substitute and I’m really nervous about the change. I’m going back to get my MAT and secondary education with an emphasis in English, and I thought this would be invaluable experience while I get credentialed. I’m watching all types of subbing videos to prepare lol
I'm not a teacher, but I was looking for inspiration for my work bag (in office some days, teleworking others) ... just had to tell you, I LOVE how OCD you are! I've watched a million of these type of videos but yours actually felt a lot more like my style!
Haha thank you!! I definitely appreciate being organized and prepared! 🙌🏼
Omgoodness me too lol. She's awesome I can't believe this video didn't have more likes
I appreciate this video. I'm starting as a substitute teacher next month and I'm excited. Thanks for the tips!
Wonderful! Thanks so much!! So helpful! I start subbing this week :)
Best of luck!!
This video is fantastic!! You are very efficient!😊 how do you feel about taking laptops? Or personal iPads?
Thank you so much for this video!! It was super helpful! What kind of assignments do you have in the folder in case there is no sub plans?
I'm about to take a test to be a paraeducator and do subbing. Super nervous about it. Not the test, but the subbing! I'll definitely need to get a bigger bag...
love this video! where did you get the "while you were out" sub notes template? its so cute! 💕
Thank you! I made it 😊 But I’ve also seen similar ones online that are free to download!
So I took your advice with the sub-plans folder but I may have went a little over the top creating a whole binder with like 10 reading/writing activities, 3 math activities, and 5 fun activities.
You can never be too prepared!
Can you go over your sub plans? New sub here! Loved this video!
I really like your folder for emergency sub plans. 1 question about it though. Do you just have 1 copy of every activity and then when you get to the school and realize you are going to need to use one of them then you use the schools copier to make copies for every student?
I had full class sets of copies made and I would only take the activities/worksheets that applied to the grade level I was teaching that day and left the rest at home. Only taking one could be a good idea though depending on how early you get there and if you know your way around the school! In my district, they only allow subs to come 20 mins early (really inconvenient in my opinion) so I always brought my own copies so I wasn’t scrambling last minute running around trying to find a copier.
Can you please give some ideas to keep 4th and 5th graders engaged if there are no prior instructions from the class teacher?
This is overwhelming I'm sure there will be training before I start as I have orientation for the position Monday but wow if I wasn't stressed before I sure am now
Thank you.
Thanks I'm soo lost
Nice video! Looking into subbing in the very near future. I’m a retired juvenile probation office in my early 40’s; thanks.
“ officer “
Can you share what is in your emergency plans
Thanks for the info! It will be my first week of subbing, for the prize incentives would you give out 30 erasers or 30 pencils to the whole class? I am trying to figure out how I would go about that because its middle schoolers. Thanks!
I’m in the process of becoming a substitute teacher and I’m super nervous!
So you mentioned the whole class earns a prize if they don’t get to three strikes. What is the class price? Class prize ideas?
What do you have in your emergency sub plans? I am looking for ideas as I am about to star subbing for elementary and middle schools.
What website has the "while you were gone printable?"
Organisation freak . Like me! 🤣
what’s the link to the lunchbox ?
Linked it at the bottom of the description box for you 🥰
Question: I'm brand new to subbing. At 05:17 you mention high school kids can "just do study hall." Explain? Not sure what you meant. Thanks for all the great tips 😊
you are going to bea fabulous teacher!
I meant that if worst comes to worst and the teacher doesn’t leave sub plans, you can give high school students the class period to catch up on homework or do work for other classes. You can tell them “use this time as a study hall period and work on whatever you need to get done”. Whereas if you tell elementary students that, they will just hear “do whatever you want” and chaos will ensue 😅
@@HannahAlonzo Oh that makes so much sense. I thought you meant send them to study hall and I don't know what that is lol. You are awesome and p.s. I love the bag!
Where did you get this top from?
I found it thrifting but it’s a Target brand!
Can I have your template for the teacher you leave at the end of your day?!
Do the kids get upset if you pass the prizes around and they don't the one they want? Sometimes when I try and do something nice, I feel like they end up fighting as well..lol
Do you tell them what the prize it in the morning or do you make it a surprise?
Surprise!
Can I get an amen for this amazing sub!
Aw thank you so much! 💕
As a former substitute, great job, but don't just do study hall if you don't have plans. You need to call the principal and let him/her know and they will tell you what to do.
I subbed from 2007-2018
What are the certifications for subbing?
In my district, the requirements to apply were to have a bachelors degree and a fingerprint clearance card, then there was an interview 😊
It depends on where you're located! In my area, they have a "non certified supply list" that they call from if they can't find a certified teacher. You need a bachelor's degree and some relevant experience working with children (in my case, I volunteered at the school prior, plus I teach ESL online to young children). Also a recent police check. I talked to the principal of the school directly (my children's school) and had an interview.
