That was right about the temperature. Looking at the temp. data, valley bowls like Zangskar, Drass tend to sharply drop after sundown. Having calmer winds, cold accumulates. In contrast, Changthang stays cold throughout due to the wind, altitude, and the drop is slower at night. That was a remarkable story. Could relate on the feet becoming blocks of ice without any feeling.
That was very well explained Var. I would feel cold throughout the day in Changthang and so took adequate precautions. Here the cold crept upon me suddenly and I was not prepared for it. It happened on my 4th day in Zanskar and first time hiking. So I did not know what to expect. Should have erred on the side of caution though. That was my biggest mistake.

This video barely scratches the surface when it comes to us imagining your plight and pain, sir. However, it also educates us enough to avoid being caught in such situations. I hope you've recovered completely and are with your family. Nalla rest pannunga , sir. 🙏 Take care.
A great cautionary tale for those who contemplate adventure and travel in extremely cold conditions. It is refreshing to see that you could analyze and actually pinpoint the causes of your frostbite. The couple who helped you out through this crisis have hearts of gold and you will surely be grateful to them for the rest of your life! One thing that I learned during my years of mountain climbing decades ago is that no matter how tired or exhausted you are at the end of the day it is imperative that you reach into your inner resources to tend to your feet and fire up your stove - both to dry your feet, socks, boots etc. and to put on a hot brew! I remember a summit day in 1991 when my climbing partner and I got back to our tent after a 18 hour climb up and down we were so exhausted that it was easy to just crash into our sleeping bags and drift off to sleep; but we somehow resisted the temptation and did all the right things before going to bed. During that same trip I fell into an icy nala on a glacier at a high camp, soaking myself up to my waist! I had to strip down naked in our tent and dry myself.... I do not wish to be judgemental because we all make errors of omission and I have made many (and paid for them as dearly as you) during my trips, and fortunately lived to tell the tale! I continue to wish you a speedy and full recovery and look forward to your high quality videos. You absolutely deserve the success that you have achieved. And a heartfelt Thank You for sharing your videos with the world!
