Around 8:27 PM on December 24, 2023, Officers Sean Barry and Tony Perito with the Middletown Township Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a 2022 Nissan Altima on Port Monmouth Road. As they arrived on scene, it was apparent that the vehicle had struck a utility pole and sustained significant damages. They made contact with the driver, who was identified as 19-year-old Pharyze.
Officer Julian Reis arrived shortly afterwards to assist, and he asked Pharyze if she had consumed alcohol. While she denied consuming any alcohol, Officer Reis detected the odor of alcohol. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Officer Reis asked her to perform field sobriety exercises.
The first exercise involved the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and Officer Reis observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Pharyze failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step while taking an incorrect number of steps. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Pharyze did not perform this test satisfactorily.
Based on the motor vehicle accident, the odor of alcohol on her person, and her inability to adequately complete the field sobriety exercises, Officer Reis placed Pharyze under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was searched and impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. Officer Perito transported Pharyze to the Middletown Township Police Headquarters for further processing..
At police HQ, Pharyze was uncooperative. She was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, but she refused to submit breath samples for testing. Pharyze was eventually released to her father after he signed the Potential Liability Warning Form on her behalf. She was issued the following summonses: Operating under the influence, operating under the influence underage, refusal to submit breath samples, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to possess driver license, failure to report accident, and traffic on marked lanes.

The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. I totaled 2 cars within 3 months period of time when I was 19. The difference was that I wasn’t intoxicated EITHER time. I was stupidly driving under extreme emotional distress the first accident (crying my eyes out), and the second time was only partially my fault (too much to describe). Both cars were cheap used cars at least. I felt so terrible...
I remember my dad’s words to me crystal clear after that second accident, when he got me an even shittier used cheap car lol (it was a tank though, in case I were to get in another crash, I wouldn’t be as likely to get hurt): _“THIS IS THE LAST ONE! YOU CRASH THIS, YOU FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET TO COLLEGE AND WORK!”_
I felt very fortunate that he bailed me out by getting me those cheap used cars… Never totaled another car again… I’ve only had a few minor fender benders ever since and I’m 48 now.

On top of that, the amount of people who I've know for 25+ years who are all of a sudden (self diagnosed) "neurodivergent" is staggering. I think it's shameful. I understand that there are people who go undiagnosed for decades, but at this point it's becoming trendy to have learning disabilities, anxiety, OCD, etc. It takes resources away from the people who actually need them, and makes a mockery of something that is a very serious issue for many people.

@@anonymity1003 this exchange is going to make me laugh all day … yes - I’m a fellow Gen-Xer
      And, truthfully? I don’t know 🤷‍♀️
I sent this video to my kid. She totaled my car (she had not been drinking and thank Gawd for videos because it was proven that she was not in the wrong)
But when I got there, well, first, I was flipping out because I saw my car before laying eyes on my kid. But then I was confused because too many of the cops and firefighters were thanking me for raising a respectful kid. She was just saying “yes, sir … no, sir” and answering their questions and following their instructions.
If anything, I was the problem. Putting myself between them and her … she wasn’t 18 yet, and I don’t trust cops (side note - I think that’s a Gen-X trait too)
Watching this video made that memory snap into focus. They were thanking my husband and I because her behavior was like catching a unicorn for them.
And the young man who caused the accident? He and his mom were cursing and throwing out racial slurs. It was total insanity. But even with them acting that way, I didn’t understand the cops reaction.
And it’s not just our kids … none of their friends speak like this or act like this.
In fairness to this young woman in the video, I know it was the alcohol. I actually believe her that she’s a good kid.
But it’s the not knowing how to speak properly for me.
The first and LAST time my kid called me bro, I gave her that “mom look” and we told her to eliminate that word unless, and ONLY unless she’s speaking to peers. Otherwise? STFU.
This was long … but I’m trying to get to this: I don’t know who all are raising these kids because they way they speak and treat people goes totally against what makes Gen X so badass. Like we aren’t delicate … we aren’t fragile. We are the latch key kids - riding in cars with parents smoking - no seatbelts - no car seats - parents didn’t know where we were - played until the streetlights came on - like they made a commercial that came on every night at 10pm reminding our parents that they have kids “do you know where your kids are?” Commercial. Remember that one?
So how in the F%CK did we raise kids who complain about being uncomfortable in handcuffs and calling cops “bro”?!?
I’m so disappointed in our peers who raised these kids. Like, DAMN!

Love it the "death stare" . My mom would give one of us one of those and all of us straighten up. And the language? No way. We were taught you shut up when grown folks are talking.
She also needs some behavioral mental health counseling...not drugs...therapy.

I call everyone brother, have since I was 4. It is my way of checking a person. If they respond I am not your brother then I respond with sorry didn't know you worshipped the devil. This is America and we have free speech, this is not a disrespectful greeting but saying what one person can or can't say is disrespectful.

@allenbanks9034 it is absolutely the same I called a detective brother on the phone and he decided to yell at me and disrespect me for a word. This is America it doesn't matter what she says or the connotation there of, disrespectful or not, his job is to respect each and every citizen. Innocent until proven guilty. I am not saying she is right in this situation I am just saying he is just as horrible a person as she is, he is not only getting paid but has taken an oath to protect our rights, he didn't take an oath to protect his feelings.

Bwahahaha! "The Death Stare"! I've been the recipient, many, many moons ago! I'm 58. At about ten years old, I called my mother "Fern". A beautiful name (Fernande) but she let me know with that look that I was not to call her by her first name! It was nothing but Ma or Mom ever again!

I got in an accident at 15 trying to miss an animal in the road. I was sober, never been a drinker. My parents were just thankful I was ok. I work for the money to repair it. I appreciate that my parents taught me to be responsible, respectful and honest.

I rear ended someone when I was 16 and driving my parent’s car. It was just a month after I got my license. I wasn’t under the influence of anything, I was just following too closely due to inexperience, but I learned my lesson. My folks weren’t happy about it but didn’t berate me however they DID expect me to pay for any out of pocket expenses. So I then found myself my very first job at a florist’s shop and worked that entire summer to pay them back. It was a big dose for me of taking responsibility for my actions, without the drama.

Every young person I see on these body cam videos, they always call the cop, “bro.” They tack it on at the end of every sentence, it seems!

And then they have to deal with all kinds of craziness, too?
Thank you for what you do to keep us safe and thank you for responding when we call.

I hope Dad didn't bail her out, & hope that she pays for EVERYTHING that was damaged, the deductibles, the fines, etc, so she think twice before using & driving.
