If you are planning on playing in contests be aware of the rules - a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.
If I'm not mistaken it's not so much one turns it off as much as there's an extra cover/case that doesn't have an opening for that portion of the sensor. When you're in a game or tournament with rules against slope you just slip that cover on and because it's a different color everybody can visually see you've "disabled" (obstructed) the slope sensor. It sounds like you bought one secondhand?
Might want to search for "laser rangefinder golf slope compensation" on Amazon. Most of them allow you to "mode" switch to a regular ranging without slope compensation. Some takes one step further to allow user to customize the mode switch menu/list and exclude the slope compensation feature our of mode switch list. Always compare the price after finding a good fit.
I was thinking of getting something similar, but I found an app on my phone that uses the GPS for range-finding etc. It also allows me to enter my scores too.
I plan on buying the Premium version this week, which offers even more options and functionality. It's a one off payment, and at a price that is so much cheaper than a laser rangefinder.
This particular model is illegal to use in tournament golf because it tells you what the hole plays, and to push it farther and say it tells you what to hit, just wow, take all the work out of golf while making this illegal.
