I was in the Netherlands in March - their dairy products were half of what we pay in Canada. I then went to the Philippines - their grocery prices were 1/3 to 1/4 of what we pay in Canada. I was floored.

Well, where I live in California, a pack of San Peligrino sparkling water is 2 for $18 US (24.61 canadian) and a head of cauliflower is about $4 US (5.50 canadian), so we're pretty expensive here, too.

Almost 10 years ago I debated with a guy in Ontario by asking why easterners like him voted for Trudeau, who obviously knew nothing about economy except his identity as a formal PM's son with a Performing Arts degree. Why very simple no brainier around 50,000 I could build my 4 bedroom 2 bathroom in a good neighborhood close to border if you want to keep working in the USA. The electric bill is normally $40 a month Water and waste is around $30 for the entire Year. The best part everything I eat is fresh it's delicious food anyways I have a bigger goal.

It's inflation, and taxation. Farmer pays a carbon tax, shipping company pays a carbon tax, the warehouse pays a carbon tax, the grocery store pays a carbon tax. End result, is all that tax is passed onto you as a cost. Then you have an increased rate of theft - causing store shrink, which results in those costs being passed onto those that are paying. On top of all of this? The Canadian government has printed enough money to over double the money supply. And when you have twice the amount of money, chasing the same number of goods - it's a good bet the price will... double. Tack on the tax costs ontop and... you have prices of today. It's not greed. Well, yeah, that is higher. I grew up in Illinois, just had got used to the over taxing. First time in Texas to visit family, and the cart total of groceries was just a little higher than what the total of the shelf prices were. Even gas was almost a $1.50 cheaper per gallon.
I remember the Canadian division of my company came to the states for a training for week and as soon as our days were over the Mounties would bolt out the doors and head to the malls before they closed with a shopping list from their wives. When I asked what their deal was they said everything is waaay cheaper here.

Stop going to the high end specialty stores that provide an in-house butcher, bakery, deli, checkout bagging and home delivery. In rural Alaska a bag of Wild caught Salmon is $55.00, a pack of frozen chicken nuggets $30.00 so it’s not just Canada, actually Alaskas groceries cost more then Canadian groceries.
It's the freight costs that are doing it. Alaska and Canada have vast spaces with long, hard distances between communities, those miles add up. We have to wait until bottled water is on sale before we can even get it in, otherwise it's just to pricey with all that weight. There's also shrinkflation and the ridiculous luxury tax on "junk food" like soda and chips that Trudeau enacted.

I live in the U.S., rural Midwest, I just went grocery shopping yesterday, and it was a "stock up trip." To fill my home with fruit, vegetables, meat, frozen veggies, canned goods, a few "unhealthy" snacks (gotta have one every once in awhile), pastas, cheese, breads, etc, etc cost me a grand total about $360. Mind you, I filled my double door fridge/freezer, my walk-in pantry, and a little over half of my garage chest freezer. Ontop of that, around 75% of the items I bought were farmed in the Midwest, the exception is clearly tropical fruit and some snacks. We only have 4ish months of heat, so we're not growing bananas and kiwi here in -35°f windchill. The cheese and butter I bought is farmed and made 30 minutes down the road. The chips I bought are made less than a 5 minutes away, I smell them cooking these chips every day. The meat I bought is farmed and processed in another state just 40 miles away. Now, a few years ago this trip would have been less than $250, but compared to the prices in the West Coast and other countries like Canada, I'll take keep my complaining to a minimum because those prices are ridiculous

If I take 4 grocery bags full of decently healthy food home from the store (the cheaper one, I don't shop at the fancy stores) then I'm spending minimum $150 on only a couple weeks worth of food. When I do a shop, picking out 1 pack of strawberries and 1 pack of blueberries is splurging a little. When I'm feeling extra dangerous I grab a pack of blackberries too but that's near $25-30 worth of fruit just the 3 of them depending on the time of year. And I live in southern Canada where fruit is cheaper......

I was in the Netherlands in March - their dairy products were half of what we pay in Canada. I then went to the Philippines - their grocery prices were 1/3 to 1/4 of what we pay in Canada. I was floored.

Where's my place? About 60 km south of Cologne in a small town with about 8000 residents. We have an "Aldi" supermarket here.
$800 a month for food for 3 people before Trudeau, now it’s nearly $2,000 a month for 3 people. I also live farther north than most and the farther north you go it even gets more expensive. I can’t imagine the cost of food in the territories.
Well, yeah, that is higher. I grew up in Illinois, just had got used to the over taxing. First time in Texas to visit family, and the cart total of groceries was just a little higher than what the total of the shelf prices were. Even gas was almost a $1.50 cheaper per gallon.
I remember the Canadian division of my company came to the states for a training for week and as soon as our days were over the Mounties would bolt out the doors and head to the malls before they closed with a shopping list from their wives. When I asked what their deal was they said everything is waaay cheaper here.

These people don't actually know what food costs for most Canadians .
For sure it costs more than the US but the items they show are not basic foods and they are prices in northern Canada, where most do not live. You do t have to buy snack foods, bottled water and dried flowers. They are not everyday foods.

I shop at FreshCo one of the discount stores that Sobey's owns. I don't pay anywhere near these prices in Canada. Stop going to the high end specialty stores that provide an in-house butcher, bakery, deli, checkout bagging and home delivery. Learn to make your own bread, buy more No Name and In-House brands, and buy cheaper cuts of meat.

In rural Alaska a bag of Wild caught Salmon is $55.00, a pack of frozen chicken nuggets $30.00 so it’s not just Canada, actually Alaskas groceries cost more then Canadian groceries.
It's the freight costs that are doing it. Alaska and Canada have vast spaces with long, hard distances between communities, those miles add up. We have to wait until bottled water is on sale before we can even get it in, otherwise it's just to pricey with all that weight. There's also shrinkflation and the ridiculous luxury tax on "junk food" like soda and chips that Trudeau enacted.
Not only in Canada, just got back from Mexico and didn’t get much spending $300 on groceries for our stay.
In fact we got more for our money doing groceries in Calgary. But still we hear you prices are out of control

I live in the U.S., rural Midwest, I just went grocery shopping yesterday, and it was a "stock up trip."
To fill my home with fruit, vegetables, meat, frozen veggies, canned goods, a few "unhealthy" snacks (gotta have one every once in awhile), pastas, cheese, breads, etc, etc cost me a grand total about $360. Mind you, I filled my double door fridge/freezer, my walk-in pantry, and a little over half of my garage chest freezer.
Ontop of that, around 75% of the items I bought were farmed in the Midwest, the exception is clearly tropical fruit and some snacks. We only have 4ish months of heat, so we're not growing bananas and kiwi here in -35°f windchill.
The cheese and butter I bought is farmed and made 30 minutes down the road. The chips I bought are made less than a 5 minutes away, I smell them cooking these chips every day.
The meat I bought is farmed and processed in another state just 40 miles away.
Now, a few years ago this trip would have been less than $250, but compared to the prices in the West Coast and other countries like Canada, I'll take keep my complaining to a minimum because those prices are ridiculous
You can't beat getting fresh 🍓🍑 and vegetables also 😉 fish 🐟 I was spoilt born basically in the fruit and vegetable markets the fish market across the Road we would Barter with the dairy worker's for milk cheese yoghurt 😂 and the meat 🍖🥓🍖 was always on call all the best fresh food picked and caught that morning 🌄 unfortunately I'm 68 STILL here but both Markets Are Gone it's a different Dublin Ireland the area is being gentrified when I was A kid there was a pub 🍻🍺🍻 on every corner and they all opened at 7 AM 😂😂 people would be singing at ten am 😂😂 all early houses to cater for the markets that would open at 3/4 am you'd see film 🎥 stars rock stars 😂 anyone who liked A drink would head to the markets for the early houses 🏘️ unfortunately everything changes the little two bedroom cottage we grew up in will now set you back 400/500 thousand euros 💶 And they are SMALL 😂 BE GOOD. I live on the west coast I'm currently visiting in the Midwest. Groceries are, for the most part, the same price. Fruit is more expensive here.
Indeed, consider yourself blessed. If I take 4 grocery bags full of decently healthy food home from the store (the cheaper one, I don't shop at the fancy stores) then I'm spending minimum $150 on only a couple weeks worth of food. When I do a shop, picking out 1 pack of strawberries and 1 pack of blueberries is splurging a little. When I'm feeling extra dangerous I grab a pack of blackberries too but that's near $25-30 worth of fruit just the 3 of them depending on the time of year. And I live in southern Canada where fruit is cheaper......
