I went with Cosworth big bore heads and Crawford s3l block. I have been suporting 500 at the wheels for about 10 weeks. TALK TO ROCKET RALLY IN BC CANADA. I know that might be a ways away. But the good thing is that they know this setup. CHEERS
Well torque it up big man! I love these guys vids. So tired of watching ppl be hoons in cars [with exceptions of course] Much rather watch & learn the science of cars, especially the Suba's! Thanks for uploading 5tars
@JDMnubi i had that same question, but if you look it seems that that endine is meant to be rebuilt because you can push the pins through the sides of the block at 5:29
@yuri 0:26 2.5ltr US STI short block is more cost effective but be careful, cause there r 4 or 5 different models of shortblock & depending on where u want to go,has a big effect on the compression ratio, cam timing & eng longevity 1:14 if done internal damage to eng, change oil cooler, cause all the metal bits will come out & do more damage Used all other existing add-ons of old eng Oiled all the new components of new block b4 fitting 4:40 Rings easy to snap.Compress rings to get through bore 8)
The oil cooler is definitely fine after a decent flushing. The oil filter is post oil cooler, so any fine particles that made it past the oil sump screen will simply be collected by the oil filter should they make their way out. If anything should be replaced, it should be the oil pump as it is pre-filter on all EJ series engines. A new oil cooler is definitely not necessary, especially at a cost of over 220 USD.
if they blew up the bottom end what damage did it do to heads? When splitting the case in half you never pry on the main bearings. the main seal goes in last after checking for crank binding. When lubing the threds the best thing is diff oil. use two bolts in the crank to turn by hand to feel for crank binding. We have a special tool for installing main seal so you don't damage it. pistons in a Subaru are directional one side goes to the front of the motor. He is close on the rebuild, but.
Wow, there is no need to hammer the piston pins in. They will slide right is with not problem ifyou got the piston and rod lined up. That is a good way to damage the piston of rod bushing. I build Subaru engine on a regular basis and rebuild aircraft engines for a living.
@cutandpastestudios they cause excessive main bearing wear and even spun bearings (like in this engine) because they don't dampen harmonic vibrations like the factory crank pulley.
Installing the wrist pins through the block? wouldn't it be a better design to install the wrist pins in the piston/connecting rod, then attaching it to the crankshaft with the end caps (like rebuilding a standard chevy v-6 v-8)
@17sundays I wouldn't recommend going to town on your own car first, your more likeley to cost yourself alot of money and possibly safetey.... get an old lawnmower someone is throwing out and pull it apart, it will give you a good understanding to start with.
man.. i remember when i blew a piston on my wrx.. i had to do all that crap.. it was fun tho.. 1st time donig a suby engine.. and so far 50k miles and running hard.. with no problems.. next time it blows.. i'll pick a 2.5liter..
He was just saying it was cheaper to source a 2.5L STI shortblock, than to source a JDM Version 6 STI shortblock (EJ20K). I dissagree, there are cheaper 2.0L alternatives, but i'm not an aussie and prices down there might be different then here in the US.
I really wanna c the #'s on this bad boy. Question, can my Ver5 ej207 be fitted w/ oil squirters that the ej20g have? I was thinking of doing that, or swapping shorts w/ an RA ej20g, cuz then I'd have fully closed deck. either that or just a complete Ver7 swap, but since I just got the Ver5 Type-R, I kind of want to c what I can produce with her. What do u guys think?
Hey, i have a question and hopefully one of you can help me. I'm no mechanic or anything but know basics about car maintenance. My question is, I am thinking about buying a Subaru Sti, just to live the experience of having one. But my question is how common are these engine rebuilds on STI'S. I have looked online and it seems expensive and seems that a lot of people with an STI, have done an engine rebuild at some point. Is this expected or what? Thanks.
I really like the STI engine but i prefer the room that a Legacy GT Wagon or Forester. Anyone know where i can get accurate info on the best mods to do? I already have a Legacy GT but don't really like the Twin turbo setup...unless there is twin turbo set ups that can give me good go power. pls let me know if any of you can help
well you have a good engine, you should just do a rebuild. I would get a new crank though... unless your mechanic says the old one is in good enough shape. At least get it balanced!
Hello, can anyone point me in the right direction for learning more about cars, i tried looking up a few vids for an introductory thing but its all way over my head!
no wonder he spun his bearings, hes got one of those cheap under drive pulleys on his engine. the engine builder also didn't measure the bolt stretch or even cycle the con rod bolts, and was pretty sloppy with the ARP bolt lube (and what builder dosn't have a bottle of ARP lube either?) not what i was expecting for a "performance rebuild"
@Gauntletbloggs No fucked torque wrench. Calibrated to NIST actually every six months - like the manual specifies. I actually read the fucking manual - try it some time. @thegrimreaper4088 each time you click after the first time - you actually over-torque it. Not a big deal when you're cranking down rod bolts on a shitty old 350 - but it is a big deal if you're building something that will fly.
oh dear. Take me to one well known, and knowledgable engine builder that would use a power tool on the block :/ No offence to MRT though, they make some great gear and kits.
Very good, u can count to 3 in Japanese. Answer: no this isn't a Subaru forum. But if you listen to what he says at the end of the video, he says that "Next issue, we will see what kind of #'s it puts down" and I'm simply saying to see those #'s. It's funny to me, that you troll my comment, but at the same time you say that you'd like to see them as well. What's the point buddy?
@sergsrt8 hehe yeah i was kidding, mechanical engineers design engines and cars and rockets and machines and what not... if you're a mechanical engineer, you know how to design engines/cars, so you can absolutely also build them..! ;) if you only wanna learn how to build them and how they work on a basic level, be a car technician or, even better, a mechanical technician, that's perfect for ya... good luck! :)
yeah, I was watching the guy turnover the engine and i witnessed the rods rubbing the cylinder and I was like "NOOOOOOO!!!!! YOU IDIOT, YOU JUST FUCKED UP"
please understand this video does not show everything we do when we build a motor.
thanks for your feedback, i am glad you enjoyed the video!

Wonderful video guys! I would really like to see something on Rings, like how to measure clearances and properly file fit the rings!
your the man of Subaru engines. good work
Piece of art, theres some knowledgeable people out there
dude, this car is top pick for professional rally car drivers
Well torque it up big man!

ty for the vid dude. very insightful. i alwayas wanted to learn how to rebuild.
Great video guys!

@nohope112 I think its just a line of oil made from the split in the piston ring.
Wow...did he really just use gasket maker to adhere the two pieces of the block together? That's UNBELIEVABLE!. Subaru engines FOR THE WIN!
So was crank shaft end play checked? Piston to wall clearance? Ring gap? Main clearances, rod clearances????
Installing the wrist pins through the block? wouldn't it be a better design to install the wrist pins in the piston/connecting rod, then attaching it to the crankshaft with the end caps (like rebuilding a standard chevy v-6 v-8)
wow... nice learning video.
Cheers.
That's sick! 2.0 everything with just the 2.5 short block added?
@17sundays
I wouldn't recommend going to town on your own car first, your more likeley to cost yourself alot of money and possibly safetey....
get an old lawnmower someone is throwing out and pull it apart, it will give you a good understanding to start with.
cool vid, really knowledgeable people.
isnt that an open block deck ?
I wish i could rebuild an engine.haha. Kudos on the mr KA beat song
@ 5:35 we see that cylinder bores havent got any cross hatch pattern..
isn't it a problem ?
Very professional way to do it!
Dont you have to retune the fuel injection and ECU to match the bigger engine volume? Can the stock subaru ECU be tuned?
didn't say it was mate, I said i have a twin turbo but don't really like twin turbo but looking for advice on ugrades or conversions into single
great video.
I DID'NT SEE THE BORES BEING HONED B4 THE PISTONS WENT IN???
Man!! This is my dream!!!
I don't think any other engine has those piston wrist pin holes right?
@ddbikerkid1
yeah I saw that too, what an interesting engine
@hoppes9
Why would it be over torqued? It wont go past the setting.
ENJOYED the video thx!
If your getting forged pistons installed how can you tell the workshop actually installed them and not just placed stock ones in?
id expect this kind of music on a honda vid
That's weird/cool how the pistons are installed.
man.. i remember when i blew a piston on my wrx.. i had to do all that crap.. it was fun tho.. 1st time donig a suby engine.. and so far 50k miles and running hard.. with no problems.. next time it blows.. i'll pick a 2.5liter..
why was he worried about the piston rings scraping the cylinder wall when he was turning the crank leting the rods scrap against it anyways?
nice vid good info
JMCustomcars
Question: Is this a Subaru forum?
I wouldn't mind seeing the numbers either. But, I'm sure they're listed somewhere on the web. ;)
He was just saying it was cheaper to source a 2.5L STI shortblock, than to source a JDM Version 6 STI shortblock (EJ20K). I dissagree, there are cheaper 2.0L alternatives, but i'm not an aussie and prices down there might be different then here in the US.
I'm a noob, one question, why didn't he connect the piston to the rod before they assembled the block?
do you guys have any information on the heads that were used?
how do you have a twin turbo set-up on a car that comes single turboed..
@JDMnubi. With subis Boxer engine its done this way.
I really wanna c the #'s on this bad boy.

@goldsgym1244 i think he means you might as well upgrade to a 2.5L rather then just rebuilding the 2.0L.
Being from Michigan. I agree.

Aussies are fuckin cool ass people lol id love to live there. especially cause they have 90's WRX's not just standard impreza's like us.
great music !!
yes Subaru is having a hard time keeping the bottom end together. they have a hardend crank now,
what type of hood scoop is he running
I just love when videos on youtube stop on random after 30 seconds. -_-
i would love to get a rebuild.... but i wouldnt love the bill at the end
depends... do you have an sr20det?
music reminded me of Hot Pursuit games on the PC
you dont but the rear main seal in when putting the block halfs together, it pinches the seal you should always press fit them
More vide of the car please.
b/c it isnt a V shape. You cant access the crank to bolt on the connecting rods
I really like the STI engine but i prefer the room that a Legacy GT Wagon or Forester. Anyone know where i can get accurate info on the best mods to do? Wish I could send my Rex across the pond to MRT :(
@17sundays school, go to school thats how i learned how to work on cars
well you have a good engine, you should just do a rebuild. I would get a new crank though... unless your mechanic says the old one is in good enough shape. At least get it balanced!
where do u learn to build engines?
Doesn't that just mean it is our USDM EJ257??
Very good
nice vid
Isnt it easier to put the connect the piston to the rod and then put on the block!!??!??
Hello, can anyone point me in the right direction for learning more about cars, i tried looking up a few vids for an introductory thing but its all way over my head!
Are you sure? looks fairly much right to me
engine gasket do not you have? Instead of using glue
Subaru legacy/lebrity GT's are twin turbo mate
i wonder how much it cost for a rebuild?
One click only on the torque wrench (which better be calibrated) - twice and the bolt is over-torqued.
weres the second part
Saad!
Here, no money!
No money here!
lol
Damn, no digital torque wrench
oh 2007 video ha
it only has 2 pistons?!
Are you sure? I heard that the horsepower drops if you rebuild the engine.
no wonder he spun his bearings, hes got one of those cheap under drive pulleys on his engine.
the engine builder also didn't measure the bolt stretch or even cycle the con rod bolts, and was pretty sloppy with the ARP bolt lube (and what builder dosn't have a bottle of ARP lube either?) not what i was expecting for a "performance rebuild"

"Oh we blew up our engine, so we need to rebuild it" *proceeds to make every assembly mistake on new block* Gee I wonder why the previous engine blew.
no head gasket?? :/
lol they went from a naked block to putting on the ac compressor... pretty sure they didnt show a "few" steps.
Actually yes.
oh dear.
Take me to one well known, and knowledgable engine builder that would use a power tool on the block :/
No offence to MRT though, they make some great gear and kits.
I wanna build a boxer engine now
Very good, u can count to 3 in Japanese.

2.5's rock the car more because of the longer stroke. Use a 2.0 crank in a 2.5 case with 2mm longer rods and ej25 pistons. I hate my 2.5
Go to this website to buy a complete guide to tuning your subaru. I bought it and it has helped me a lot
Or is it??
yeah, I was watching the guy turnover the engine and i witnessed the rods rubbing the cylinder and I was like "NOOOOOOO!!!!! YOU IDIOT, YOU JUST FUCKED UP"
Am subaru makac in Ghana
Can I hear Andrew's voice from Mighty Car Mods?
gday
