  • Eargasm High Fidelity Filtered Earplug Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews the Eargasm Filtered Earplugs.
    Website: www.DrCliffAuD.com
    Clinic Website: www.AppliedHearingAZ.com
Maximizing the protection of your hearing is highly advised if you find yourself in a noisy situation, particularly if you want to prevent against hearing loss and tinnitus. However, sometimes using foam hearing protectors or ear muffs provide too much protection if you are trying to appreciate live music or understand speech. In these situations, using a filtered earplug may make more sense.
That's why I decided to check out the Eargasm High Fidelity Filtered Earplugs for this review. Eargasm is a company that uses it's name, that is an obviously clever play on words, to market it's flat attenuation hearing protectors. They have a variety of different earplug options from their Regular plugs to a smaller version.
These plugs have an NRR or Noise Reduction Rating of 16. The higher this number the more protection it provides. Scores typically range from 0-31. Unlike ear muffs and foam plugs, that provide an NRR of 24-31, filtered earplugs provide an even level of attenuation to keep things like music and speech sounding natural, just not as loud.
Imagine that you are listening to music inside your car. Now imagine that you turn the treble all the way down. That is what you are doing when you wear traditional hearing protectors because they attenuate the high-frequencies more than the low-frequencies. This creates an unnatural listening experience.
The attenuation profile of the Eargasm Filtered plugs is very flat compared to a traditional foam plug. It ranges between 25 and 35 dB of attenuation from 125 Hz to 8,000 Hz.
The last time I was in Nashville, and everyone who has been to Nashville knows that everywhere you go there is live music, I wore filtered earplugs and it significantly improved how well I could hear my friends by lowering the sound of the music.
I also wore Eargasm plugs to my friend's wedding on New Years Eve. That was an insanely loud wedding, but I was able to have great conversation with my friends, and I left without my ears ringing and without feeling like I lost hearing.
The www.EargasmEarplugs.com website has a useful comparison tool that allows you to hear the differences between No Earplugs, Eargasm Filtered Earplugs, and Traditional Foam Earplugs. The difference is astounding and similar to how I perceive these protectors to perform.
The Eargasm earplugs seem to work great, but there are a few things that I am not a fan of. First, the Regular size is way too big. I have larger ear canals and they still wouldn't fit my ear canals. This is even a problem for the models on their website. If you can see the plugs sticking out of your ear they are not inserted properly. Fortunately, they have a smaller version of these plugs that fit my ears perfectly.
Second, they only offer one level of attenuation. With around 30 dB of flat attenuation, it is go big or go home. Other companies offer filtered plugs with 16 dB, 20 dB, and 25 dB of flat attenuation so you can pick the right level for the environment you are in.
Otherwise, the Eargasm High Fidelity Filtered Earplugs are great and I highly recommend them if you want to protect against hearing loss and tinnitus, but want to still appreciate music and conversation in a noisy environment.

I ended up getting the standard size and both sizes were way too big for me. I contacted Eargasm, and they sent me both of the smaller ears shells, free of charge (amazing company) and the smallest shell they have fits me. I honestly have very standard size ears, but their shells just fit very large.

Dr. Cliff, I really enjoyed your video. Have you reviewed the Decibullz custom molded ear plugs? I am curious as to your thought on these. I started riding a motorcycle and there are thousands of people concerned about hearing loss from wind noise. I don't know if you have made a video that addresses this issue. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the useful info ... actually i have tinnitus and Hyperacusis so i try singing practice with ear plugs on, but i did feel like
plugs sometimes cause a loud reverberation of my own voice , which unfortunately distorts some notes sound.. mostly on the lower notes i feel head resonance, like i am singing to myself loudly and feel some discomfort.
Do you think this can worsen the tinnitus/Hyperacusis and hearing loss ?

Hi @Doctor Cliff, AuD. Thank you for your videos! You make them both informative and entertaining! I do have a question. I recently purchased the Eargasm High Fildelity Earplugs and I'm having trouble deciding on the sizing. I am a 6'2" male with large ears, but I don't know if that correlates with a larger ear canal? So, both sizes don't stick out past the tragus (as with the people on the ads), but the smaller one goes a bit deeper it seems. I wish I could attach pictures.

I understand that they protect your hearing by making sound quieter and that they don't distort the sound (as much) because they lower all frequencies equally-ish. But how do they improve the clarity of conversations? Do they somehow work better the louder the sound is?

Should people with mild to moderate hearing loss be wearing these in a noisy environment- such as a Machine shop? - Think high impulse sounds cause by air compressors.
My "normal" hearing sans hearing aids, already sounds like the Foam ear plugs. Would wearing these these cause more harm?

  • @doxasticc

Isn't 16 NRR pretty weak? Don't you have you to apply the formula (NRR-7)/2 to get how much db it actually reduces? So that means if I'm at a concert with a volume of 100-110 db, it only reduces that volume to 95-105? Even if it was the full 16, that wouldn't reduce the volume to a safe level of 85.

Doctor Cliff I’m looking for an earplug that filters out ecspecially high pitches but also lowers overall sound. I’m currently using foam 32db and it’s not enough. I need to be able to hear without the high pitches and need the overall volume low as well. Bass doesn’t effect me as badly as high pitch but if the bass is to loud it can still cause problems. I also am looking for something that doesn't reverbarate my own voice to much. Any ideas? (This is a serious inquiry). I suffer from siezures and migraines.

I took them to EDC Mexico, they let you hear everything crystal clear at a safe level, music even sounded better with the earplugs on in a couple sets where audio was distorting...
My ears survived to 3 days of obscene bass at the Wasteland all the way to the front (Svdden Death, Borgore, Nghtmare, Trampa).
They're comfortable, you barely even notice them (smaller tips) and didn't fall out while headbanging HARD, you have to push them back in every now and then tho...

But I got the Smaller version and even when I use the smallest size they make, I can't get them in as deep as you did. It's kind of nerve-wracking, I don't want to ironically damage my ears by pushing something in too far. maybe this is not the plug for me.
