Whilst it's not masses of models looks like you made a really nice job of them. Theres lots of people jumping on these challenges and I think the main this is just finding someone to promise to paint with and then actually doing it.
Well said. I just use these as a reason to paint. I did one ages ago, and havenr painted much since, so its been really helpful. 😀
i put my citadel pots onto sticky tack so they never fall over. I had a small jar of agrax spill once, never again.

Really enjoyable to watch but those 24 hour painting sessions must be brutal. You could, as you mentioned, swap armies to paint but maybe you both pick say 3 colours that must be on each group of the other persons army? I’m just making your 24 hour more stressful😁 but those indomitus marines are fantastic but insane amount of detail on them, especially the bladeguard.
Sounds like a good idea actually, stops the boredom and maybe the other person can add to the flavour of the models 😀 ah, whats a bit more stres anyway 😅
I spilled Agrax, but more often I spilled the Lahmian medium...and recently spilled some contrast paints too. I'll 3D print myself some of those paint holders :P
Haha, yeah, sounds like you need it. 😅 I did spill both the nuln and the lahmian, double the fun! Bloody paint.
I don't own any Citadel washes, so I can brag, I have never spilled Nuln Oil, or Agrax Earthshade :D

Ah thanks guys! Yeah, I definitely could have done things quicker, but I really wanted an army im going to be happy with in the long run. Quite proud of my 1 man 🤣😅

In my experience, nuln oil is singularly adept at spilling. Pretty sure it's a law of the universe.
Don’t worry, I’m a slow painter too, it generally takes me anywhere from 3 days to a week to paint a single model, it doesn’t matter if I’m just doing one or batch painting a full squad, it takes me absolutely ages to get models finished. But oh well, I enjoy it and it’s fun, so it doesn’t really matter how long it takes me 😊
Thats it isnt it, you have to enjoy the process too. For me, these challenge videos just help kickstart projects, as I'm always pressed for time. Do I really expect I'll finish them, without dropping quality.. probably not 🙂

Two weeks to get 6 death guard figures done but I enjoyed the process which is the point.
Knocked a fresh pot of Nuln oil out onto my table... switched to AP Darktone from a dropper bottle. I’ve never looked back. It’s exactly the same.

Even though you failed the time challenge you have accomplished alot. Coming up with a homebrew chapter is quite hard and coming up with colours that fit with your chapter is also hard. So well done! Its a victory in my eyes :)

Recently painted and based the indomitus necrons in around 7 hours and that was a slog, but they came out pretty great!
Got the Space Marines to do next... I'll have to see how I compare to this ;)

As Guy from Midwinter Minis always says... use the biggest brush you can get away with, it really does save loads of time when batch painting.
Cows?? In the 41st millenium... I don't see why not but consider how they feed the masses... surely corpse starch has some residual materials.

Look, if Zorpazorp is in Victoria I will go to his house and knock off his Necrons, then he basically painted no minis! You can still win by cheating!
This is the issue with a lot of painters I find, if you rush, you WILL grow to hate painting. It becomes draining. I actually went from batch painting to doing one to three models at a time and it's done wonders for me.

I think looking back on this and focusing on constant improvement could lead to a production line of getting Space Marines painted.

A second video isn't a bad idea. Its probably 20 hours of work, maybe more. But thays not too bad really, a couple of long sessions and I could be done. There will definitely be a follow up of some sorts. 😀

Loved the video. However almost anyone who sees the single guy you fully finished would immediately say "You're going for too high level of detail, polish and finish for a 24 hour challenge! Really you're doing the army to a display level quality. When for this kind of challenge you should be shooting for a Tabletop Ready Plus... maybe you could push it to Plus Plus."
These challenges are all about having not only the color scheme planned out but also tested on a separate unit of models done individually & timed. So that you have every step of you're going to paint them step by step along with how long each of those steps should take. Also part of these challenges you must understand yourself as a painter. What areas you're strong at and where you're weaknesses lay. Try to play to your strengths and avoid having to do your weaker skills as much as possible.
But the army is shaping up nicely! I hope to see them fully finished off in another video soon. I also hope that both of you do something similar for the other armies left in that box as well.
Yeah, thats all very true. 😀 I know I'm not a particularly fast painter, I know I'm handy with an airbrush (but still slow), so I do try to lean on that a little more.
I guess, for me, these challenge videos are just a way to get me painting. Like most, I never have enough time and have too many models in boxes. I'm happy with the end result and its good to break the back of an army. 😀 Now I can just paint away at leisure, knowing the most boring bits are done.
Absolutely gorgeous models, and much more progress in 24 hours than I could manage (I barely managed 5 models in 12 hours) I have to ask though, where did you get those custom transfers from?

Necrons are just much easier and faster to paint, they have a lot less surface to paint, you can also "cheat" by just dry brushing and still obtain the same result as painting normally, I'm by no means a good painter but my ratio of my indomitus box is me paiting a single space marine marine per five necron warriors in the same time frame.
Agreed. I should have done the Necrons, or jsur ddybrushed my marines haha.
I think Lachlan hit the nail on the head when he said you would find a way to make the Necrons last 25 hours. I don't think you have quick and nasty in you. I wonder though your thoughts on this question. Painting light on dark I would have done the Rhinox Hide on the arms first and then the Orange. It would let the orange shine a bit more than it would on the black and you would have spend less time using it to highlight than you did trying to under shadow with the RH. What do you think on that?
Hey, ha, yeah, quick and nasty isn't my way. 🤣
I have tried several different recipes for the orange, and the problem with orange over anything other than white is that it just doesn't show through. Its such a thin, lightly pigmented colour, I've tried it over bone and light grey too. It goes green very easily (much like yellow). Im sure there is a way to do it though 😀.
I'm happy with the result, even if it does take me 2 years 😅😧

Lol brutal. I'm currently painting my passion project. White Scars force. First white scared me. Then Primaris was released changing my entire force which has officially been replaced by new big boy marines finishing with the newest bikers. Apothecary White has been a life saver but I still have to recess shade every single panel...of everything. Love it lol. Great video buddy. Pleasure to watch. I really need an airbrush....
I feel for you man, ha, that's a punishing colour to work with, it's very unforgiving. I can't recommend an airbrush enough, its allowed me to tackle whites now, which I wasn't comfortable doing before. The one I used here is just a cheap one (£40) from China..it came with a compressor and everything, its been great to learn with.

That's a really great scheme there mate. Taking the crimson fist colour highlight ide to the whole arm looks really cool and I don't think I've seen it before as a scheme?

Dislike.. for that? 😭 There is quite a lot to think about in a video like this, dont really worry too much about spraying onto a matt, especially when I'm not at the studio.

Which airbrush do you use, must admit i struggle with them.
This is just a cheap, non brand one 😀 An upgrade is probably in order, as I use this alot and feel confident moving onto something better. Just get stuck in and give it a go, I'm no pro, but i can get effects id never have managed before. 😀
At what pressure are you running your airbrush? I like how you are working open and relatively close in.
Ha, I cant actually tell you the exact pressure, as this is just a cheap airbrush and has dots, rather than a number 😅 Traditionally, id be looking around 18-25psi 😀
I have 20 psi set at compressor, I think I need to get one those on the airbrush trap regulators.

Citadel pots, good for just two things. Spilling and drying out.
As for the army, I think you did very well indeed. You'd have finished if you were just going for tabletop standard, base colours and a wash, but I don't blame you for going further than that. It'll be a stunning looking army when finished.

have not spilled oils or washes, but i did spill my plastic glue all over my painting area......with miniatures there

It definitely could be done, it'd take me a fair bit longer though... would we really want that. 😅
Spray can base colour and then makeup brushes to drybrush on your various shades, building up gently to the highest highlight colour. Then make up a mid-tone glaze and use a big brush to glaze the different shades together. It's incredibly effective
@@childofthedarkrat Yeah, you can use glazes and stippling to achieve these kinds of effects. 😀 Ive actually got a video coming up using those techniques. 😀
The only issue I have is its very hard to avoid texture on surfaces.

Although you didn't get the whole army done I don't think you can beat yourself up too much. You are painting to a higher standard than just table top and therefore its always gonna be tough to complete them all in just 24 hours. If you literally did base coat and shading you would have smashed them but then they wouldn't have looked as good and impressive as they do!! So it's a kinda semi-win.
That's exactly it. 😀 and thank you! I could have given them a drybrush and a wash, but these are my channels official chapter, so wanted something i'd be proud of. These videos are great at getting me painting.. Maybe ill just do necrons next time though 🤣🤣
Surely the point of these challenges is to adopt a paint scheme that works for the time given? You’ve done your best ever black and orange, and you mention you don’t want to skimp just for the sake of the challenge. Tbh it sounds like you wouldn’t have done anything differently if you weren’t on a timed challenge.
For me, the main reason is just to get me painting 😀
Love these mini marathon painting sessions! I find them inspiring. I recently built, sprayed and based an entire Tyranid army in two weeks of evenings and weekends. A lot for me! Now they’re ready for batch painting - Starting with 90 hormagaunts;) Von Kettering’s youtube painting channel shared a cracking tip to prevent the knocking over of null oil/Agrax earth shade: he uses blu tac!
Ah of course, blu tac. My normal plan is to not spill it but it doesn't always work 😅

Do it, even if you just do 12 hours 😀 Break the back of the army and get them all together.. I find its the only way I ever get much done.

1 member in our group started collecting an army to play because we played the game. Before that he was mainly collecting characters or units he liked to paint and showcase at home.
This is the exact same paint scheme im using for my custom chapter! Except i used an aged bone color instead of white for the trim.

Think these 24hour painting challenges sound fun in principle but the seem quite should destroying in practice.
This one was actually pretty fun, and much better than the last one I did. They're a good way to get me painting too 😀.. but you're not wrong 😅

Great challenge and some excellent results. I just finished my Marine half of Indomitus in a similar scheme, swap yellow for orange. I used the Artis Opus dry-brushing method (my first time trying it). Pretty happy with how they turned out.
