Don't worry that she was thinking about an impending death. She wasn't. She did NOT find out she had mastasized skin cancer that had spread to her bones and hips, until a few weeks )or months?) later. During this nightclub performance, she had a cold, worried about how her singing would be affected, but felt the cost to reschedule the taping was prohibitive. Her singing was phenomenal, even suffering from the effects of a cold.

Eva did this set at Blues Alley in Jan of 1996.
She showed up again at Blues Alley in May 1996 using a cane and said that she had fallen off a ladder and hurt her hip.
3 months later, she was diagnosed with melanoma that had spread to her bones and she passed away in November 1996.
I think 10 months to the days after she did this set.
A few years earlier, she had been treated for melanoma but told that the removal was successful.

Thanks for the info RhondaHill. On a logical level, I wish life was more fair than what it is.

You are certainly not alone in that sentiment.

You’re welcome Terry. She touches me deeply as well. More than any other singer.

Eva knew what was going on. She had beaten melanoma cancer a couple years before this relapse. No one can say that she knew with certainty that she would pass away within the year. But Eva was a brilliant young woman. She knew what she was up against. Yet had the strength, courage, and generosity to bless us with these legendary performances.

She was sick during this set. She had a cold. She wouldn’t get the diagnosis until 5 months later.

Recorded January 2, 1996 - diagnosed midsummer - died November 1996. So young and totally extraordinary! 🌈

Lucy Thomas (British singer) does an amazing version of this as well. But nobody did it better than Eva.

I say it's like a Jim Crosse style little jazz with country blues. However you classify it it's good

In response to some replies below: regardless of whether her imminent mortality affected her or not, she did not need it to be the transcendant singer she was

I cannot say specifically what sher knew about her prognosis, nor what she was thinking. It's not at all clear that shew knew her end was imminent at the time of this recording. But I don't feel that anything she did, including this, requires explanation. Everything she did, earlier or later, had one thing in common -- she touches your heart and soul. We don't not need to consider her early death to make the judgment that she was one of the great singers. Having said that, her story is heartbreaking. But also inspirational. Like her music. God works in mysterious ways.

Her family's website says that Eva survived melanoma about 2 years before she relapsed. The odds of surviving chronic melanoma were well documented in medical journals in the 1990's.

This is beautiful and poignant given her illness. She's just a beautiful singer.
There's no way to compare the song to anything else however,
The Geezenslaws to a fun uptempo version of this. I've been trying to get Don to do a Geezenslaw song for years.

Thanks Ed for your thoughtful request, seems you really like Eva's music. I will say this, it is not country or folk . I just don't get it

Hey Jeff, l love her singing voice more than any other performer. I read a review on another channel and it was said of her: When she sings, the angels are jealous. I do know the premise of the channel, and I always hesitate to request a song such as this. I may never do it again. I just think she is that special exception. I totally understand where you are coming from. Be well my friend.

@montauked17 Keep the requests like this coming. The country family can make space for a beautiful voice, deep lyrics and a beautiful guitar. I feel similar to the way I do when I hear Alison Krause as I do listening to Eva.

For those Born Again Christians that believe in the Rapture of Christ's Church, the dead in Christ shall rise first then those still living and fly over the rainbow to meet the Lord in the sky. I believe that God who blessed her with this talent is having this recording be reated to for such a time as this as we may be very close to the End Times when that will happen and wants this recording to encourage those who believe and maybe encourage others to believe he is using it to reach them too!
