  • Alfred J. Kwak was born as the son of Johan Sebastian and Anna Kwak. Some time after his birth, Alfred loses his parents and his brothers and sisters after a car hits them. Henk the mole, a good friend of the Kwak family, raises the little orphan duck. Alfred experiences a lot of adventures.
Unlike many other cartoons targeted for children, Alfred J. Kwak features exceptionally mature and often sad themes. Amongst others it deals with different social and political issues, such as abuse of power, but also raises important values such as friendship and solidarity. The cartoon is also notable for the political themes on which it touches. In the cartoon, Alfred fights against a fascist dictator, takes in refugees fleeing from a country under Apartheid (with white geese and black ducks), saves whales against hunters, and oversees the changeover of his country from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy with a democratically elected president. Such themes are far from typical in a children's cartoon, and form a big part of Alfred J. Kwak's appeal. Other episodes have satirised the Japanese love of golf, and criticised countries which have sharp north/south economic divides.
The cartoon is also unusual for the subtlety of its long-term narrative. In most children's cartoons, the characters do not age. In Alfred J. Kwak, we see the progress of the main characters from very young children to adulthood as the series advances. This is particularly striking in the character of Dolf, who is initially a mere schoolboy, but who, as time passes, becomes a criminal and a dictator. #Cartoon #Anime

Henk is not a weird name in The Netherlands, I know a lot of people who are named like that.

Great review! This show was also dubbed in Finnish and I love it because the kids are well..they can't sing but it's adorable. When I was a kid, it sounded like some of my friends were singing and just another neighborhood kid, yet the images showed epic stuff. So it grabbed our attention. That's how we used to go about singing.
I loved this show as a kid. and I was shocked but it brought the realities of the world to us kids. By the way: we still have kings and especially queens who live in ages old castles in the world.

Its sad that Hermann never brought out the movie in 2014 :/ Apparently he aimed for a movie to get released(or started) on 2014 starring Alfreds son but we never heard anything about the movie since than.

Dolf's father is a crow, and his mother is a blackbird. :) That's why he puts shoe polish on his beak, to hide the fact that he isn't purebred.
"There's no blood" There's blood in the first episode, actually, when Alfred's family gets killed.
Good review. :) This is the best show I've ever watched, and I wouldn't mind saying it's probably the best animated show around. ;)
I watched it in the original Dutch version, but I've heard the German version's got a really good dub, with higher quality environment effects (like how you can hear when someone is talking outside or inside).
The animation is great, and the music is, too. But most impressive are the stories! The character development of Dolf alone is amazingly well worked out, but there's much more interesting stuff. This is truly a very complex show! And yet it's easy to follow, even for children. :)
I got here from the suggested videos after watching a video of my own: I made an Atari ST cover of _Ik ben vandaag zo vrolijk_, the full version of the song that is used as the outro (or at least, it is in the original version). :D

Storywise probably one of the better, but animation itself isn't the highest for its time.

Osaka Ghoul It's good enough! :)

yeah it is good, but what i meant is - if it would be best animated series it would've needed to have better animation. I hope they reboot it at some point, long as they don't do it CGI

Osaka Ghoul Ah, like that. I didn't mean that I feel like this is the best animated show in terms of quality; I mean in terms of enjoyment and emotional and educational value. For those three things, animation quality doesn't matter _that_ much, as long as it's alright.
I don't think a reboot would go too well. If it were to happen, Herman needs to have a big part in it. And I don't know how long he will be active for still (or alive, for that matter, I think he's getting old).

I really love Alfred J Kwak. The themes are great and might be controversial, but still important today. Dolf aka Korppi is just a metaphorical, great, funny and epic villain, especially in Finnish dub thanks to Pekka Autiovuori. Japanese opening is my favorite version.

Apparently there was a theater play thing (I hadn't heard of it before). But I think the cartoon was way bigger. I think everyone that is around my age watched this cartoon. There were toys and stuff. Also it was everywhere, in stores with kids corners they usually had this cartoon on repeat. So by Dutch standards it was quite big for a kids show.

yes! just rewatched that episode, and noticed how much of a referential wink the man-beast is to Donkey Kong; at some point, when he walks into the Afred's circus-act, he even holds the girl like Donkey Kong holds Princess Peach!

Spitter spetter water lekker in het water ga maar vast naar huis, ik kom een druppel later. I have grown up with This show and I will never forget it always fun. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore or show them on tv, and if any questions what J. Stands for it means Jodocus and that means smile and laugh and also naughty (I am Dutch btw)

There actually is a human in Alfred J. Kwak. In one episode Alfred joins a circus. And a human is kept there as a wild gorilla like animal. Knowing how much social commentary this show contained, one could easily find the parallels with slavery and white people using Africans as circus attractions.

If there is such a thing ( i can't remember anything like this ) that is allegory for humans keeping animals at cages.
