Ok, so today were gonna be talking about a retro anime that I've been wanting to make a video on for years. This show is called Alfred J Kwak, and in this video I'll be talking about why I think it deserves a second chance in the modern era! Don't let the thumbnail fool you, it's more than what it lets on.

I grew up with this show. As a child I never really grasped the seriousness of some of these topics. I watched is again as an adult, and have a much better appreciation. Regardless I love that show.

Americans can be so arrogant about their cartoons being 'the best' when stuff like this 'Captain Scarlet' and 'The Animals of Farthing Wood' tackle far more mature themes.
I remember watching this back on Channel 4 in the UK during the early hours of the morning.

I watched this show a ton as a kid, specifically the german dub. Some people say the Nazi arc was banned in germany, but I saw it as a kid. Maybe it wasn't shown during it's original run, but allowed later on. Dunno.
Anyway, the german dub was very high quality, and the original voice actress for Alfred even reprised her role for the german dub, since she spoke enough german already, which gives Alfred an adorable accent.

This series was produced by Dennis Livson who little later produced the 90s Moomins. Tove Jansson (the creator of the Moomins) actually gave him the permission to make the Moomin series because of Alfred J Kwak.

Dutch television was at its peak during the 80s/ 90s and now what we have left is a garbage truck. Fox kids aired so many niche anime back them. Boes, Alfred J Kwak, Mon Cole Knights, Shinzo, Flint the time detecive, Super Pig and so many more. I really wish we could go back to those times.

Among many cartoon series back in my days, this was one of them for my childhood and sure the show itself already felt odd for my kid self and I somewhat felt Dolf off from the show. After watching this acknowledging Adolf Hitler, everything became crystal clear about this character slightly blown my mind.

We in The Netherlands, where the series is originally from, are not afraid of heavy topics. Or at least, we weren't back in the days. Nowadays we are "Americanizing", sadly.

I remember watching random episodes of the series growing up when the English dub aired on TV here in Egypt.
There was an Arabic dub as well, however for some reason the Arabic dub skipped the entire Emperor Dolf storyline cutting the series down from 52 episodes to 39 as well as removing the apartheid part of the backstory for Winnie's family in episode 27 (21 in the Arabic dub), which is surprising to me as Arabic dubs don't normally censor concepts like fascism and racism/apartheid in children media. Maybe the censors or whoever did the Arabic dub felt it might have been too much for a show featuring "cute cartoon animals". Though it turns out the company that dubbed the series is notorious for heavily censoring the cartoons they dubbed compared to other Arabic dubbers like how they removed any reference to witchcraft in their dub of the Moomins anime.

In the Finnish dub nothing was taken out of the show and the only changes that where made was the changing many of the characters names to more finnish names.
One thing that really caught me of guard while rewatching the show was in episode 29, where in the finnish dub one of the black ducks was called the "n-word duck" by a villain.

The parents were heavily based off Adolf Hitler's parents.
Dolph's dad is a crow. His mom is a blackbird which means he is an illegitimate child of his dad. He is so ashamed of the fact he uses shoe polish to hide this fact (blackbirds have yellow beaks. Crows have black beaks). The theory his mom died could also be true as Adolf lost his mom at a young age due to cancer. (fact: the Hitlers were so poor they could not always pay for doctor's visits let alone morphine yet the local doctor cared more for his oath than money. So his mom sometimes got morphine against the pain. The doctor was in fact jewish but due to this got a crapton of perks like he was allowed to sell his house, he was guarded all the time so no one would beat or bully him. He could sell his house (which jews normally were unable to) and he got a travel permit to fly anywhere outside of Germany) which let him end up in the US)

I listen too certain episodes in the English dub. Sadly the emotions in the Dub are a bit flat when spoken. While in the original Dutch versions they are clearly heard a good example would be when Henk (Alfred's adoptive farther) tries to comfort the young duckling right after his biological was hit by the car. You can clearly hear the pain in his voice and almost in whisper yammering in emotional pain of the entire tragedy while he hugs Alfred.
When I listen the English Dub he says the lines but remains silent not expressing his emotions at all with sound. Giving the expression of guy too shock to react at all at the tragedy. In the dutch dub Henk and other characters making many sounds to expressing their emotions for example many of them growl like a dog when they are angry before even speaking their lines. I only watched a few episodes in the English dub but is the lack of emotional sounds in all of them? Or is this because of the Ai Dub and the original English one had them. And what about the other languages did they have them or not?
