What an expertly done tutorial with amazing results. Wow, thanks for your great contribution to the Cinema 4D UA-cam community!! It's always a good day for me when you post a new video.
Great tutorial! I have a question.. I extended the project to 1800 frames long but the animation played only for the first 160 frames. How do I apply the animation to keep moving all the way through the timeline? I would love even if you will refer me to a tutorial. I couldn't find anything. Thanks a lot!
Right for some strange reason when i add the smoothing deformer it's doing nothing, i'm following it step by step but rather than a match i'm using my logo so its a much bigger sphere to begin with but it doesn't seem to register the smoothing deformer, any ideas?
Andrew Robertson Even i am facing this same exact issue, tried to do all possible changes in the values of the smoothing deformer but it just won't work.
Andrew Robertson EJ says on his website that smoothing deformer doesnt work on methaballs (and primitive objects in general in my experience) in versions prior to r15
So no one else is having issues when rendering? For some reason once im done it looks great in the view finder but once i fully render it doesn't render the rest of the particles. It just shows a short spherical bump.
Solved! I've read through the comments on vimeo and came across Jack Sacs' comment: "the renderer birthrate in the emitter didn't match the editor birthrate, bring it up to the same as the editor and you should be fine!" -
Also my "smoothing" deformation didn't work. I've tried a different method in order to get the similar effect. I put the null into a "hypernurbs" and applied a "taper" deformation between hpernurbs and everything (null). Not just the same but it was enough for me. Note: I didn't try but i think you can get a flame like this by using "cloth tag" and "tear" activated.
Smoothing works differently if you're using a version older than R15, if you have R15, be sure you download the update. It will solve the Smoothing Deformer inconsistency!
That makes sense EJ. Given the 'noob' nature of my question I'm glad you took the time out to respond. I personally cannot thank you enough, your tutorials are nothing but insightful. Always looking forward to your next upload EJ, I want to grow up to be just like you.
Yes, I've watched quite a few tutorials on 2D fire for AE, but none of them have quite as nice/clean/believable of an effect as the fire you created in your Cinema 4D tutorial here. Most of the AE tutorials I've seen for 2D fire rely on wave warp/turbulent distortion effects, and while they serve the general purpose, they just don't look that great. I see that most of your tutorials are for Cinema 4D, but you also have a couple tutorials on AE too, so I didn't know if maybe you could give some tips on how you would recreate this fire in AE? Thanks in advance!
When in the Editor the flame is PERFECT but when I render it it becomes just circles... does anyone else have the same problem, I'm going crazy trying to fix it
Hey, so I had a similar problem at first and if you followed his directions, have the same order as EJ and everything looks good in your editor: The problem is a difference between your 'editor' vs your 'renderer' - A setting you are seeing for the renderer is different than your render settings. My specific problem was in the emitter, my birthrate editor was different than my birthrate renderer. Hope that helps. Also thx EJ for all the great tutorials.
***** I've found that the smoothing deformer gained this functionality in R15 so unless you have R15 and above this won't work as it did in my tutorial.
Hola, podrías ayudarme a resolver la animación de explosión 2d que utilizan en este video, ua-cam.com/video/vYz0Kfxy1tM/v-deo.html te agradezco la orientación.
This is the best process I found this far to simulate fire without a third part plugin. A huge thank you from a new cinema lover.
Thanks for watching!
coolest c4d tutorial i've seen in 4 years
+Giovanni Bocchi Thanks, sir!
What an expertly done tutorial with amazing results. Wow, thanks for your great contribution to the Cinema 4D UA-cam community!! It's always a good day for me when you post a new video.
ModelBOT Thanks buddy!
hands down ej you know A LOT about cinema4d and different workflows to apply in any mograph job . awesome
Great tutorial!
I have a question..

Thanks a lot!
+footageisland That's due to the particle length, you just need to increase the particle birth to the end of your composition
Amazing! Thanks again :-)
+Tuomo Luukkanen I don't mean the final flame render, just some stuff from the middle to get the sense of turbulence
I can't render it. It doesn't renders ssmoothing and metaball, how can i fix it ?
You're awesome man. How would I loop the fire?
Dose anyone know how to apply this same effect on maya? It's kind of hard to get the smooth deformer on my partical in resuliting the sharp edge.
Right for some strange reason when i add the smoothing deformer it's doing nothing, i'm following it step by step but rather than a match i'm using my logo so its a much bigger sphere to begin with but it doesn't seem to register the smoothing deformer, any ideas?
Andrew Robertson yes, I have This Problem Too, and i did exactly as you showed in the video
PLEASE HELP!
Andrew Robertson Even i am facing this same exact issue, tried to do all possible changes in the values of the smoothing deformer but it just won't work.
Andrew Robertson I tried with R15 and it still doesn't work
Andrew Robertson EJ says on his website that smoothing deformer doesnt work on methaballs (and primitive objects in general in my experience) in versions prior to r15
***** That is correct, I found this out after posting the tutorial. Apparently Maxon enabled different functionality after R15
Thanks for that, I have a question how do I hide textures on objects in the scene to make animation faster since they drag bit.
Hide textures? You could just put an "X" in the Material Selection field in the material so it'll just go away
At 13:11 how'd you get those color swatches in the color area? Thanks!
Guess I found my new favourite YT channel. :D
Woo hoo! :) Thanks!
You can make the fire does not come from a point side ( As with the matchstick )? which comes from a flat surface (plane) like a furniture?
You can you just need to create multiple particle flames to fit the object you want to set on fire
Very cool. Do you think you could use on your flame the sketch and toon effect and make a black and white flame?.
Pedro Gordinho You definitely could! Try it out!
Amazing tutorial thanks a lot!!
thanks for watching!
This makes me interested in the software so much! Thanks!
+Draco Blair Nice!!! Thanks for watching!
OMG thank you so much for responding my question!!
So no one else is having issues when rendering? For some reason once im done it looks great in the view finder but once i fully render it doesn't render the rest of the particles. It just shows a short spherical bump.
Ricardo Montes Are your Preview/Render settings on your Metaball and Particles the same?
+eyedesyn Experiencing the same. Metaball and Particles preview and render settings are the same. I'm on R17.
Solved! I've read through the comments on vimeo and came across Jack Sacs' comment:
"the renderer birthrate in the emitter didn't match the editor birthrate, bring it up to the same as the editor and you should be fine!" -
Hey EJ, how would you go about doing this with R20? would you use the new volume mesher and maybe some fields?
I would say try instead of using Metaball, using Volumes and Fields, for sure! Will look much better I bet!
Thanks. That makes it much easier than draw frame by frame.
how do you make the big ball appear/disappear like in the example you show at the begginning?
I animated the visibility or you could just scale it down to 0
The best for us to know the details
what details did i leave out?
couldnt you just select the flame object in the object manager and turn on X-ray in the attribute manager?
zimonslot For what?
nevermind, i thought it would make an object see-through. It doesnt.
Hi EJ. I saw you have a bunch of swatches underneath the color slider. How did u make this happen? Many thanks! Big fan of your channel.
Thats new to Cinema 4D R17 I believe!
Also my "smoothing" deformation didn't work. I've tried a different method in order to get the similar effect. I put the null into a "hypernurbs" and applied a "taper" deformation between hpernurbs and everything (null). Not just the same but it was enough for me.

using the Normal effect was very clever ..
bro im getting stuck on how to make the fire crisp and smooth i do not know where im getting it wrong which version of cinema 4D are you using
)) awesome! thx alot
I'm glad you liked it!
Hi EJ, quick question. Instead of using meatball is it possible to get the same fire using a cloth effect? Or would it be counter productive.
It would be tricky because Cloth you need to use the same geometry, but metaballs allow for geometry generation that allows for a more organic flame.
That makes sense EJ. Given the 'noob' nature of my question I'm glad you took the time out to respond. I personally cannot thank you enough, your tutorials are nothing but insightful. Always looking forward to your next upload EJ, I want to grow up to be just like you.
Amazing!
Thanks!
My smoothing deformer doesn't do anything, any help?
+skip7203 make sure youre updated to the latest version of R15, it solves any issues
when I add normal direction to alph channel, and trun on invert, my flame go black, before there, anything just so fine, need some help~thank you EJ~~
Might need to check your settings and see if you added the flame color in the Luminance
LOL,it`s the setting, chosed fold by some reason, you are the best~!!
hi master, whats your render setting?
This is using Sketch & Toon, the most important setting it changing the AntiAliasing to BEST and using the Sinc or Cubic filter!
how to view in normal, becoz i'm viewing in linear -y view
awesome...
You're amazing!
Is there a way to create this 2D fire look in after effects?
I'm sure I've seen a tutorial on how to do 2D fire in AE before, give it a search!

AE Isn't my strong suit, my only advice is BUY C4D! :)
lol, okay thanks anyway! You do amazing work in C4D, btw!
Thanks so much for the nice comment, but seriously..buy c4d :P
Lovely!

I suspected. Thank you very much
Do you need R13?
You'd need R15 or higher
eyedesyn Thank you for your information of R-X versions

Why did not it start from zero?...
Say what now?
I do not know how to make that match or background, textures etc. :/
Then get to learning! :)
