The fact that the guys put the corset on OVER the chemise is making me so happy. The try guys are doing the historically accurate work that Hollywood refuses to do
that is to say: the bare minimum
Especially since these are DEFINITELY not Regency-era corsets :)
@@TheEliseRodgers Not to “uM aCtuAlLy” you lol but there’s not really such a thing as a regency-era corset. Back then they wore “stays” and the corset was later developed from them. The main difference is that the point of corsets was/is to create and accentuate curves whereas stays are kinda board-like and were just there to provide support since because of the high waistlines of dresses at the time there’s wasn’t really any point to accentuate the waist or anything because no one would see it :)
@@Ella-bo8dmHollywood just designes the outside of the outfit, that will be in front of the camera, it’s not that deep
@@Ella-bo8dm Actually to actually your actually. There were indeed regency era corsets. The term corset actually started to become used at the end of the 18th century (appearing in France in1770 and spreading from there). At that time it would be a garment that was lightly boned or quilted rather than the full on restrictive stays of earlier times. It is true that the corsets as we think of them today is more of a early 19th century thing as stays and corset started to be used interchangeably around then, but that doesn't erase the fact that there was a garment that was called a corsett around in England in the late 1700s that was distinct from a pair of stays. And they would have been less restrictive and way softer than stays at the time.

People act like corsetts are so aweful when they are much better for you than the average bra
@@kalliehennigar8005 not really, they had to wear them really tight and its not healthy at all for their bodies now its not as bad ofc but yeah it sucked in the 80s
@@marijauz yeah its a big misconseption there are hundreds of videos about it on youtube corsets are actualy quit comfortable so long as its worn over a chemese and properly fitted and worn in movies like the dramatic scenes of women with marks on their backs when they take a corset off but they would never wear it on bare skin it will make the corset very dirty from skin oils.
@@marijauz I read your comment while wearing a steel boned corset. 😂
Earlier today I swapped my $80 specialty bra for my corset because my shoulders and back were KILLING me. As soon as I swapped I felt instant shoulder and back pain relief, and it’s only an off-the-rack corset.
I’m part of the big bust small band crowd, and corsets offer way better support for heavy breasts by distributing the force over a much larger area than a bra. I also find the compression also helps with anxiety. It’s like a hug!
Bernadette Banner has a video here on UA-cam where she compared wearing the medical back brace she wore for scoliosis to a Victorian corset she made from a historical pattern. It’s fascinating!

"The Regency era's not about tiny-tiny waists"
Correct, Keith! Tight lacing corsets were not really a thing in that time! Makes sense - empire waist and a straight skirt makes tight lacing around your natural waist a... waste of time.
I'll show myself out.
True the had no boning at the corset during Regency. Just cotton corsets
In one of the first scenes of bridgerton they tighten the corset saying this girl's waist need to be skinny and it bugged me for the rest of the show even without knowledge of the time period because why would they need skinny waists with dresses like that
Also, tight-lacing was virtually impossible because there were no metal eyelets! Tight lacing would have ripped the eyelets.

A bit closer to "shuh-meez", I'd say. :) Of course it could be dependant on where you live.
His mom lived (lives?) in France for a while if I remember correctly plus with his knowledge of fashion, he probably picked up some of the vocabulary and pronunciation.
Yep I think it means shirt (French is my second language and I’m still learning so that may be wrong)
@@turnerIott Yes it does, I don't see much people wanting to learn French, I'm so glad you're doing it 😊
Hang in there, it's not an easy language 😅 if you need help I would be happy to be here!
I just wanted to put in here that the garments being called corsets are actually stays. Stays became most popular in the Tudor era, where they were employed to flatted the front (offering a smooth look and a safe place to stick in necessary pins to hold the outer garments in place) and lift/support the bust, but never to shape the waist in. Corsets are an undergarment, that while they support the bust as well, they shape the waist in more with the help of strategic cutting of the cloth and padding. As we all know, corsets are a Victorian 'invention' adapted with the changing silhouettes, though they were never the torture devices as most people are misinformed.
Also! For the question that Eugene queried, bloomers weren't introduced into the women's wardrobe until again, the Victorian era. And even then, they were not what most people probably imagine now. They were a type of split drawers (two separate leg tubes either tied or otherwise held together by a waistband) , the access being so the lady could use the bathroom with ease, and were often also called a 'pair of combinations'. And it wasn't until skirt became smaller and more manageable that our modern underwear became a staple. So yes, that means before then women were free breezing under the chemise (which is another reason the chemise was needed to keep the more expensive outer garments clean from body odors and sweat/oils/other secretion's).
I hope this helps anyone who is interested! There are a lot of UA-cam creators that are a lot more informed and knowledgeable than me (such as Abby Cox, Bernadette Banner, Nicole Rudolf) so I would also suggest checking them out if interested.

As a US American I'm going to have to second the vote for the "British" accent. It looked like it caused Keith physical pain to do... and I didn't feel much better.
Definitely the brits. The lack of petticoats etc I can deal with, but the butchering of my accent. I'm speechless

I can already see fashion historian UA-camrs cringing to this video
Fun Fact: Corsets during the Regency Era were mostly used as bust and posture support, rather than for cinching. Empire waisted dresses did not show the natural waist-line, therefore cinching would be a waste of time. The main point of fashion in the era was to give young women a youthful and docile appearance.
yes! and they haven't broken them in either. Unfortunately hollywood loves to put women in tight lacing corsets for some reason
Yes, love when people explain this especially since undergarments like those have a bad rep. They weren't even called "corsets" like Victorian era. They were called "stays". Usually with no boning or very little, and not tight-laced. Not as uncomfortable as one may think!
@@kimberlys105 a lot of the time hollywood won't put a chemise underneath either and its like "no wonder you were uncomfortable!" and yeah they just didn't have bras yet lol not to mention the boning was made of baleen so it would mould to your body with the heat which blows my mind plus usually a clothing what tailored or made specifically for a person its all just so fascinating
Yeah, while I was watching the series I wondered why they'd need to cinch it in when their dresses are so lose.

Me waiting for Zach to mess up
Zach: * wears corset upside down *
Me: * satisfied * ofcourse he has
I know right!!!
It was just killing me!
And Eugene was the only one that put the Chemise on right, everyone else put it on backwards 😂
or... should I say... of corse(t) he has?
But he also skipped the weekend in a corset episode.
Nobody:
Ned: *dancing* If i jumped into the water, I would drown.
It was so random 😂😂
screams in future knowing
*historical costumer pain intensifies* but at least they’re wearing chemises under their stays (yes they’re are called stays, not corsets. Corsets and stays are different clothing items.)
THANK YOU!!! it also majorly bothers me
Woohoo I found my people😅 even though one of them put the stays on upside down🙃 and some other things I think it’s a very funny video. And so cool they did it at all!
OMG, my people! I think I'm crying a bit :(
THANK YOU! Same reaction!
Yay! Fellow fashion history nerds!
Ned’s voice changing when he’s reading about the social season and his face at the end when he finds out about how a dowry works was priceless
Ned should really think before saying things and then doing the exact IP opposite.
