@davehughesfarm7983 In most cases you would be correct an no big deal but there are enough instances every year where people, inadvertently or otherwise, do themselves in by "train accident". When you are in the cab of a train, even at a slower speed, when there are people on the tracks ahead you can't help but have the doubts as to whether they will move in time or should you be considering the brakes along with the horns and bell. Enough people don't move in time that you might not be aware that most larger railroads have counselors on retainer for operating crew who have ridden into a tragedy beyond their control and have to live with it. You might want to check out a recent You Tube video by True Crime Zone called "They decided to take a photo with a train" that resulted in the death of three teenage girls some years back. So yeah-you never know.
Does anyone out there know why there was a stop order at the grade crossing in Chehalis by chance? It was enacted all night and every train had to stop n have the fireman get out to watch for traffic. The cross gates and lights were fully functioning and all too. Very, very weird.
Earlier that night an SUV went around the gates at that crossing and got hit by the train they were down for, then about two minutes later an Amtrak coming from the other direction hit it as well even though it was slowing down in emergency stop mode. They had to "protect the crossing" until they could get a crew out to check that none of the sensors were damaged by the accident and that the crossing was working properly.

At least your Darwin's were smart enough to have a look out! FYI, the MOW gang that had been working on the UP along US 79 in Hutto moved on to UP main 2 in Buda, TX today.....at 11 MPH, which is apparently their max speed. They left about 3 PM for what I am guessing was a 60 mile jog. I hope they made it before dark. Move was due to UP not wanting to shut down the line through Hutto, which is a single track main, anymore than they have to, since this line is used for both ingress and egress by Amtrak.
