- No worries, folks, Ruby and I are still on speaking terms. She just needed to blow off a little steam so she walked up to the Customer Service counter and vented.

He needs a few hangmats, a big paddling pool and a few extra bird feeders. The Bear Spa Retreat would be so relaxing for Ruby and co.

Oh my! Grumpy girl! I believe she understood you when you said "No, don't come up here, there's nothing there," and it annoyed her. She's probably heard you say it enough in three or four years that she learned what it meant. What’s amazing is that black and brown bears can truly run up trees. Not climb. Run. It’s amazing how fast they move up trees.
Her comfort zone is you in the chair lol outside of that she is unsure what to think! It is amazing how her trust in you in the chair is so great She lets her babies frolick around you and not get upset!

Blimey, Patrick, I jumped out of my skin when she growled! She's looking very healthy though. I was in lovely Asheville last autumn. I lived there for 8 years but haven't been back to visit in a good while. It's changed a lot, but still has the old charm. 'Visiting' with you makes me feel like I've said hello.

I think the bears don’t fully understand the idea that they are welcome on Patrick’s territory most of the time. In their world, there’s no sharing territory. The bears understand it on some level, but their instincts may not. They also don’t have many ways to express disappointment, but I’ve noticed that their bluffs are almost always when there is a physical barrier between them and Patrick.
Nonetheless, Ruby understands that the porch is Patrick’s territory, and that she and her cubs are free to visit most of the time.
I see Patrick as the Jane Goodall of the bear world, and Jane Goodall was my hero when I was a boy.

I've been watching an old video of grizzlies in Yellow Stone. One who has put fear of humans behind her and is a favorite of photographers came out of hibernation with FOUR cubs!
She was a bit grumpy but respectful to a degree. Good girl for doing as told.
