    Thank you for providing such sound research and advice on how to eat a ketogenic diet. You're truly inspiring my compliance for this new style of eating. Three months in I'm feeling the benefits and my lab numbers confirm this. I have feared losing a sharp mind and independence the way my mother did with Alzheimer's. That fear has disappeared. I very much look forward to your new book.

    Personal verification - stopped taking coconut oil for 2 months at doc's direction for weight loss. Noticed a marked uptick in short-term memory issues. Started back up and saw results immediately. I'll take the extra 100 calories a day, thank you. Plus I use it on the face.

      I have heard from people with your experience many times! The best way to avoid weight gain for those who are worried is to substitute the oil for other oils and fats, or better yet, cut your portions of carbs in half (pasta, cereals, bread, rice, starchy vegetables like potatoes.)

    Good to hear again, I came across this wonderful doctor a year ago. I have been trying ever since to get help to try to stop seizures started 20yrs ago when I was 40 after numerous blows to the head. I have been trying variations of the keto/ketovore way of eating myself since I have not been able to get much help. I did have a few appointments with a Dietician but nothing was changed in the diet I had started. I really wanted to find a good doctor and Dr Newport could not help me so I have just kept on with my own research. I am still having seizures and looking for a doctor.

    Mary, Thanks so much for all the good information. I'm 76 and started a basic keto plan. I've seen better mental clarity - which was my goal. In addition, I've lost about 35 lbs and don't want to lose any more. I'd like to start taking coconut oil and MCT oil but don't know where to buy it and how much to take each day. Could you give me some basic directions. I don't know of a doctor or anyone else to advise me about keto or the oils. Thanks for your help.

    I'm a retired English professor, now writing novels. About a year ago I informed the local public health nurse, who holds a weekly clinic in my remote location, "I completed my novel the other day. That's the sixth and, I've decided, the last. I'm not going to write any more." Later, the nurse happened to mention in passing, "Writing is good for the mind." I went on to write two more novels and a screenplay, now more for my mental health than in hopes of publication. What do you think, Dr. Newport?

    • @marynewportmd5950
      @marynewportmd5950  Рік тому +3

      I totally agree!! In fact, writing books and other projects is exactly what I do to occupy my time. I have written four books so far, plus a 2nd and 3rd edition of my first book, and I have the manuscript of another nearly finished. I also have rough outlines for three others in my head! I become bored if I go for two or without writing! I do believe that constantly learning and writing could slow down cognitive decline. The physician who wrote the forward for my third book was 99 years old at the time and was still publishing on ketones as potential therapeutics!

      @@marynewportmd5950 Thank you for answering. After I complete a novel, usually around the 10th of the month, I spend six days reading and revising it and another day writing a synopsis. Then I send it out to publishers. Two weeks later, I start feeling purposeless, so I begin a new novel on the first of the month. I completed a screenplay September 26. But I won't write again for a while, because I am preparing to move to another country in the new year. Cheers.

    My guess is for the onset of alzhiemers the brain becomes very low in power because of insulin resistance. After this because of this failure a sudden bacterial infection from the gut starts in the brain wiping it out and causing the plaque and tangles. This only occurs after the bacterial infection and the bacteria from the gut crosses the blood brain barrier because of the very low energy because of insulin resistance. If the patient starts replacing the glucose which is lacking with mct oil and other keytones for energy the bacteria overgrowth WILL NOT HAPPEN AS SOON.

      Hi Dr. Newport,
      I want to express my deepest condolences on the passing of your husband. Your studies have been invaluable, and I've been sharing your work with others who are facing dementia. However, some of them have raised a question: Why did your husband still lose his battle with dementia, even though he was following those protocols that were helping him? I'm curious to know what you believe could have potentially prevented this outcome, based on the information you've gathered since then. I ask this not only to gain insights but also to help others who may benefit from your knowledge. Once again, my sincere condolences on your husband's passing.

      I have heard from caregivers of people in the later stages who have had improvements, so it is definitely worth a try. For example, I stayed in touch with the daughter of a lady in her early 80s who was mostly in bed and didn't recognize family members, gradually improved over about two to three months, such that she got out of bed, recognized family, started eating again, and even reading the newspaper! I have received similar reports from a number of others as well. My husband was between stage 5 and 6 out of 7 when he improved dramatically and was doing well enough to volunteer at the hospital where I worked.

      Coconut oil can be taken as is, but adding it to warm foods works well, and is a more pleasant way to eat it when you do so every day. You can cook with coconut oil at low heat, scrambled eggs for example. If the oil smokes, the pan is too hot!

      Coconut oil melts at about 76F (25 C); it works well with anything that is warm. Some people put it in their coffee or tea. You can put it on warm vegetables, in soup, chili, stew, and cook with it at low to low-moderate heat. If the oil is too hot it will smoke and ruin the oil. You can mix it for cooking with peanut oil, olive oil, or butter and it can be used at a higher temperature. Scrambled eggs soak the oils up very well. I make spinach with it and that type of thing.
