- Escape to the Country : North Devon [13: 2] - Habits Of Local Communities!
Alistair Appleton travels to north Devon to see if he help can cook up the perfect rural home for a pair of baking enthusiasts with a budget of £450,000. Away from the property search, Alistair travels to Arlington Court to see one of the best collections of 19th-century horse-drawn vehicles in the country.

Hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching!
I live in the US. I've watched a number of these shows and have fallen in love with the beautiful countryside there in the UK. I am so grateful that I was able to see these shows; I've really enjoyed them!
Same here...i want to live here in one of these beautiful old homes with the history, the roses & wisteria over the door, and old mill or converted barn....'sigh'..
Me too!
I love this show...it has something calming to watch...and the beauty of the country...makes me want to pack up and move there.
What a great show! It's nice to get away from everything going on in the world and just sit back and enjoy watching this program. All the best from California
My ancestors are from this part of England. Those ancestors brought horses with them on their journey across the ocean to Newfoundland….Seeing this wild Devon horses was so neat because the breed looks so similar to our Newfoundland ponies…our horses are descendants just like us. 🙂 Sadly, our ponies are almost extinct now.
Allistair Appleton presents a most interesting perspective of each county! Love his shows and search for them!
This is my favourite show. Living and working in Asia for the past 3 years, feeling homesick. Hopefully one day I can come back and buy a nice countryside home
I certainly hope your wish comes true. I've been homesick for 26 years

I have watched this show for more than a few years now and love the different areas of England, Scotland, Ireland etc. Beautiful country! I have my favorite presenters of course which add a real charm to the purpose of the show. But what touches my heart most is the care that a lot of folks in that part of the world have for the elderly parents. Being of a mature age now myself, I think that is a wonderful way to give honor and respect for those who warranted it w a lifetime of loving family and sincere community service. Love this show, and wish this current couple all the best.
@@rebeccamcdonald4884 So is Scotland, but I'm pretty sure she knows that.
@@rebeccamcdonald4884 🙄 and we're not pals.
I particularly like this show's episode. The host has a heart and is thoughtful to the couples needs. Too bad there wasn't enough land for the bakery shop. You can only present what is out there. Great job!
All the three houses were beautiful. The third one mystery house was excellent.
I read many books that describe the coaches of the 1800's, and seeing them is such a treat! Thank you.
"And you have a lovely garden view from the kitchen"....insert picture of American Southwest. Haha!
I absolutely adore Alistair and this show❣❣❣ It's wonderful to see the beautiful countryside and learn so much about the rich cultural history...I would love to sell up in America and immigrate across the pond but I doubt I'd be able to afford it. ❤👏❤
You would probably have to downsize. Property is expensive in the U.K. I live in North Devon near the second house. It’s like being on permanent holiday. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
@@Lambchop2701 How blessed you are to live there I am here in usa. If I had the money I move there in a hart beat my grandma morecraft was from England and what i am looking at sure is lovely. And you are surely are blessed.and where i am living I am very blessed too my home is beautiful i got more than i deserved..
I love this show, it's so calming. I go on vacation watching. I've always wanted to live in the UK. Thank you from South Carolina.
If ever you decide to visit you would be welcome here to stay
@@stevenvitali7404 Thank you
i really like this show, i had no idea england was so beautiful.... the landscape looks like a fairytale.
OMG the Cotswolds are right out of a fairy tale! 😍😍😍😍😍😍

I love the beautiful 15 & 16 century villages/towns. Especially medieval/Tudor style homes I would love to live in England. I hate when people renovate these old treasures into contemporary style designs. I wish they would just restore them to close to what they looked like (of course you need the indoor plumbing, heating & electricity...things like that). I love the look of the beautiful wooden beams and thatched roofs. Dang I would love to afford to move to either England, Scotland or Wales (my great grandpa was from Wales and Great Granny was from England and I have family from Scotland!)
Artlover No shit Sherlock. I’m not delusional. There’s homelessness everywhere in every city, village, town, county, parish, state country in the world! There’s no reason to assume someone is an idiot or not realistic....all I did was make a comment on the beauty and history of the UK
Artlover Not touchy at all. And the way your comment was written was very condescending. And I doubt that all homeless people in villages are cares for. Normally they are given a ticket to another city so that they can live on their streets. And before you make another condescending comment ...I do know this as fact. I have family and friends who reside in small villages - to large cities in the UK. Have a brilliant and safe day!
I LOVE the show. I LOVE the lack of 'fabricated drama.' And my heart beats faster with the sight of each field and village. Alistair... up to his old tricks; completely ignoring one of the necessities of his clients.
i like property 2 very much . always happy to learn about English countryside . it is lovely . i spent one year in England as an au pair girl when i was young .
How cool.
Loved Alistair's comment... something to the effect of 'wish there was one of these in every house' (as he rang the bell to summon the clients). Only he could get away with it. Love him.
So enjoyed the side bit on the carriages, the history and what each was used for I find fascinating.
so nice that they both agree on a quiet country environment...it gets rather tiresome on many "similar" style shows when they each have such opposing requirements...one wants to be in the middle of the city and the other wants a more quiet setting! Inevitably one of them always has to compromise... this show was a refreshing change!
All were very nice homes to be made their own.⭐️⭐️👍🤗🥰
To hear that Primroses crowd all the hedgerows is enough for me to want to move there. Primrose is one of my favorite flowers. :)
As a cnd I love this show although on my normal TV the rps I get to see r sometimes up to 20yrs old I love Jules nicki Allister and Johnny
I love this show! It is my regular show to go to!!
Mine too in fact this show is just about the only thing I do watch.
"Wow. I said I wasn't going to say wow."
Literally says wow walking into every room in every house haha.
Love that second property. Would have loved to live there. 😍
real nice people
lucky people to be able do this
house number 2 was my favourite.
Love the inserts of the western USA vistas when they panned the open kitchens.
Me too. Especially when it's mentioned that the kitchen has a garden view! Haha!
Just started watching this show and I love it.
House one was my choice indeed .I loved every minute of it.
House number two sells itself. Awesome!
Love the second house & yard.
Such pretty homes, I hope they find the perfect home, it isn’t easy!
Almost cruel to show them the mystery house. I love the second house!
Yes cruel when they need a big garden.
Lovely homes!
I've seen this one 😢 Thanks anyway for sharing with the USA viewers❣🇺🇲
Yum Devon cream tea!
I am keen to live in a sea cave off the west coast of Scotland.
North Devon and North Yorkshire are 2 of the most beautiful places in the UK.
In so many of shows similar to this, the agents don't show places that meet the buyers needs. To show a house with no "garden" which was a main feature this couple wanted was a waste of their time.
They’re really good
Great love watching Esc to the Country Devon & Cornwall :)
they try to get the families what they ask for, but at times they need to show, even if they do not include all requirements
I love these shows they are awesome but I want to see Ireland
I do too
I LOVE Escape to the country.....but I get very irritated when they are given a brief with CLEAR stipulations of what the buyers want & need.......and they show them one or more houses with one or more of the absolutely vital requirements missing.
This couple had quite a low budget. It's hard to give anyone their complete wish list when they don't have enough money to make that happen.
I had to stretch my budget when I gave my brief to my real estate agent. I got everything I thought I wanted - but I do still have work to do on my place to truly make it mine!
LOL! I got a house that had everything I wanted and I still want to make changes!
@@EMSpdx I think it would be rare to find a home already built with exactly what everyone wants. Wish lists vary and one person may want this and this, while another may want this and that. I for one hate dishwashers but it's rare any more to find a home without. They're out there but if it doesn't have a dishwasher it's probably missing something else I DO want. Your best bet for a perfect house is to have one built. But that's okay. I may want turnkey but I would still want to put my own stamp on it as well.
The exact house that people think they want doesn't always come on the market in the area they've chosen. I think they do a good job for the most part. Often when they do find the perfect house the couple doesn't buy it anyway. I just watch for myself and dream. I don't really care what the house hunters do. I find so many of them outrageously spoiled and picky.
Myself i would pick the first house to me it was perfect beautiful. In all every one house is just beautiful.
Does every episode of this series include a barn conversion?
PITY no garden in last house, but I like the second one!
А я выбрала второй дом - прям дом мечты! )) И ведущий.. ммм, красавчик ))
03:40 These (Devon long houses) invariably have thatched roofs. 03:44 A massive Devon long house with a slate roof ... oops
I've been watching episodes of Escape to the Country for some time.... Please regular viewers.... Put me out of my misery.... Have they EVER actually found a house the poele buy.... 😂😂😂😂😂?????
Oh yes, several times. There's even a spin-off series calles I Escaped to the Country, where they visit people who've bought one of the houses shown to them to see how they're getting on.
@@Neldidellavittoria thank you SO much ......I watched an episode of I escaped .....it was wonderful to see people in their new homes. Thanks for answering ☺
@@Neldidellavittoria 'several times' what, all 6 of them ?
@@MrDaiseymay Six what? Them what?
A number of times people have actually bought one of the houses shown to them on the programme, that's what I meant.
I don't understand your question.
Yes they have and I do hope you can feel much better now! Enjoy
15:50 can anyone tell what this music is I love it but can't find it anywhere many thanks and 36:00

INDUCE GRAND-MAL EPILEPTIC SEIZURES!
I’m surprised Brits never seem to see a bedroom as potential office space…
ALL I WANT TO SEE ARE THE HOUSES!!!!!!!!
How many lovelies?
Love North Devon, not so crowded as the South, BUT--those narrow roads(more like Lanes) with 6 foot banks on each side of the road, and NO pull--INs ? wear waterproof pants, in case a local Farmer, driving a Monster Tractor, comes thrashing down the road at 50 mph. Happy memories.
This was very nice. I'm thinking that more attention should be paid to meeting all the requirements of the people looking for a new home. It was sad to see the house that was perfect, but no yard!!! What a disappointment!
You shouldn’t buy a house just to accommodate a dog--but I did, too.
As an American the first house seem to be attached to other houses definitely something I don't understand being in the country.
I would think because what has been made into living places for humans used to be farm buildings of some sort, and making them into 2 homes gives them more of a scope for people to do what they want with it like when a person comes along and has the money to make a handsome offer to the people on the other side of attached 2 different homes. And I thought the very same thing 2 days ago then I thought about a good reason they have what we in the U.S. would see only in a town or city. And it does solve a certain situation which could be older people spending part of the year traveling and don't have anyone to watch their home for them, like having a built-in babysitter very close by. Sorry but Just Saying.
I am from the US and find it funny that viewers never see gas or fire stations in these villages.
A lot of picturesque villages don't have petrol stations in them they'll be in the nearbye town or on the outskirts and fire stations are usually only in the large local towns ☺️
@@beth1862 Thanks for the info.
Yes, it is a rather pressing problem, if you run out of fuel you have to set a day aside to walk to the nearest town for some fuel
Most of these re locators seem to have two dogs.
How is the crime rate in these country sides given its so sparsely populated and distant from the city?
Crime rate ? well , it inspired 'Midsummer Murder's'' for a start.
Look up "Killer in My Village". It's a show all about countryside village killers.
Sue should stop saying "Wow!" How about "Yippeee!"?
+Oracle X: All Pre-Programmed buzz-words for them to say to attract the audience and also sales-pitch techniques such as: The WOW-factor/Light & Airy/Period Features/Potential/Guys/Ta-Dah!/ etc etc....every episode lol....but great viewing every time as well....We do often wonder how young/old, people seem to come up with huge sums of money....especially kid-couples that clearly haven't worked all their lives....2 scenarios i came up with was: 1: Winnings....and 2: Inheritance....the only 2 major ways, otherwise its combining wealth having the right start and jobs....
How about wowza?
@@Spike0000 After watching the show for several year, I notice Brits say "fantastic" a lot. Not a word I hear used as much in the states....but I notice myself saying it more. LOL
I don’t think too many Brits would say “Yippeee!”.
Sausage roll
What's with the stupid random photo inserted into the middle of stuff?
That's where the commercial would go. Be glad you don't have to listen to that.
What the heck are you talking about my name?
Why show someone a house with no outside when it was the one thing the wanted for their dogs. Wasting their time very unfair.

Low quality filming
this is the grockliest video i have ever seen, its nothing like that in north devon, I grew up there

Huh?
copy of a copy...
Alas, Alex's channel was shut down a couple of times on copyright claims, so this is a copy of that old channel.
An eldely couple and 4 bedrooms are not enough? Shame on you
The presenter is so camp he should be selling them a tent.
Those wooden beams in house number one are ROTTON!!!! VERY UNATTRACTIVE!!!
This show is mega irritating and fairytale like, I've lived in beautiful places in Durham and Northumberland, millions of people CAN'T, only a select few, and why do expensives houses have such inferior things? like bathroom suites, gravel drive ways, old horrible radiators...should be called escape to south west England
