Old barn becomes young architect's budget, elegant home-studio

- Alfredo Vanotti wanted to recover the old barn his grandfather had built 100 years ago in his village’s now-abandoned town center.
Working on a tight budget and mostly his, and his father’s, labor, he began to turn the former cow stable and hayloft into a modern classic home for himself and his daughter, and the garage into his home-studio.

I just love that there's people like this out there: looking out for stories, but remembering those before them. He created a new concept of coziness. While constructing of a new chapter, never forgetting the history behind. You can feel the respect and care he has for his family's story. Well done!!
Here in Italy there's a different way of thinking about conservation of ancient things: most Italians want to protect the history behind the objects instead of buying new things. It's in our dna.

True
He is definitely NOT "crazy", he is living a dream. His restoration/modernization is a tribute to his great-grandfather. Lovely place.
A tribute, a low budget remodel, and a gorgeous building, courtyard, and view. Simplistic, modern, small but feels big with high ceilings, my exact style.
He is so lucky to still live in the land of his forefathers where his history lies ....the home is beautiful...
Thanks for clearing that up .
You have good judgment
@@roseannd8737 yeah very lucky... my grand father was so poor he didn't leave much for my father, let alone me... and my great-grand father was even poorer than my grand father.
Rich with history and integrity...let the Joneses compete with the Joneses and have their brash, cheesy, latest things. Gorgeous, thanks for sharing !
Stunning! He did it with so much love and respect for his ancestors. Loved the outside areas, too. I would ask this gentleman to design something for me any day!
Beautiful! That man is a creative genius!
I love that your little documentaries always have people occupying and using the spaces that you visit - and that children are present. You bring reality and practicality and a sense of life to these human places that you explore. Not just static - architectural projects and interior design magazine type approach. Thank you for bringing that humanity it is what we need more of! Love from Australia.
Such a special home. Yes, I believe his grandfather would be so happy with how he has restored the home, blending the elements of old with new. Exceptional job!!!!!
Outstanding... An architect who appreciates the past.... And his grandfather's folding doors work as well as they did decades ago... He really knew how to build things to last.
I can't help but love Italy. And the Italians have life sussed. Its a way of life I love so much and the nicest people, I'm moving there.
Except for widespread poverty, unemployed, rampant crime..
Like any other places in the world. But it is easier to notice wrong things than good ones. What is important is how to get through them.
This is absolute perfection. I love the history and how it was honored in the remodeling. The view at nighttime is utterly incredible, too. Would love to see it with my own eyes someday. I’ll have to put Chiavenna on my list of places to visit!
One of the reasons I keep playing the lottery is that I have this dream of wining big time and with that money I will go and restore old houses to there original glory.
One of the nicest houses I`ve seen in while, just perfect.
Really? The aquarium bathroom is perfect?
@@dorkelf001 Or the low fireplace that's difficult to put the woods in...
@@nikos-giorgos bro, practical vs nice is different word
Everything is simple elegance of family history and beautiful modern future. Simply lovely.
Beautiful. 30 years ago, I used to fantasize about restoring my grandmother’s home in Vizzini, Sicilia. Walls and floor were made of large, rectangular stones with a huge fireplace to cook in. Very simple. Very beautiful. It had originally been a part of a huge home that had been subdivided after one of our ancestors gambled away the family fortune.
Bravo Alfredo for such an inspired project and thanks Kirsten for finding and sharing thess gems for us to enjoy!
Just stunning! Rustic and beautiful!
I agree but very dark
Ma questo architetto è un fenomeno!!!!!!!!!!
I wish you tube also had the hearts for LOVE. Like is not enough. Besides having built a beautiful house for himself, his idea of living in the present but knowing that the past is now and here too is fantastic!
He is brave deciding to live where there seems to be no one ele living, yet very smart of investing where his family has invested for generations.💖
Wow,, very heartwarming video. The past is not forgotten. He has cherished the memories of his great grandfather. What a beautiful thought it is. The house is fantastic, the old and the new coming together in a beautiful way.
You're grandfather would be more than happy. If he saw what his grandson did he would be weeping... just like I am now. Bello e caldo. ❤️
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for showing us this! The original wood doors in the downstairs studio are magnificent, and all the original work is glorious. The improvements to this amazing historical structure are exquisite. I am so happy for this man to be able to dwell there, and grateful that he had the heart to connect to his heritage and restore and re-purpose this structure in such a respectful and artistic way. His grandfather must be so proud and how lucky his daughter will be to inherit this.
Perfection. Exquisite taste. Oh Italy! Oh the Italians! Oh Italian design!
Every inch of that place is absolutely beautiful, he did a great job.
Kirsten, thanks for all the videos; I've enjoyed watching your family grow up the most. Best regards
Amazing, it's just made my whole weekend sing! What a lovely tribute to his history and family. You beautifully captured the essence of this very talented architect's home and office.
What a wonderful home. The use of space is fantastic. The design and construction seem to take everything into consideration; the history, the materials and the landscape all blend together into an amazing space.
What a lovely preservation. So much charm and ruff textures of the walls makes this home a rare opportunity of natural elements. Thank you for sharing a look of your home with us.🏡🏠🏡🏠🏕🏠🏡🏡🏘🏚🏚🏘🏡🏠🏕⛺🏠🏡🏡🏘🏘🏘🏡🏠⛺🏕🏕⛺⛺🏠🏠🏡🏡🏘🏤🏣🏕⛺🏠
italians are masters of conservation and adaptation.. they know good stuff
I hope more Italians and people everywhere gain more interest and awareness of the importance of preserving old buildings. They have so much more character than the modern, stark, cold lines and cubes.
Yes
lol they wish. Rome is falling apart, they dont know shit about conservation xD Just bc you saw one you cant generalize.
and conversation and mafia... Oh, and macchina...
Ethnocentric? Generalizations?
Oh geez LOL
Absolutely beautiful. We all need to go back and re use wood, stone, etc, and connect with Mother Nature. It’s so soothing.
In an age where we are all seemingly distracted..., isn't it nice to see this architect so passionately sharing his piece of paradise. No waste, a reverance to his family's history.
This is a beautiful renovation. Such talent this young man possesses. Like he says, the house is very calm and peaceful… What a tribute to this young man’s Great-Grandfather! I hope others in the town are inspired to do the same. It’s so lovely outdoors in the evening.
Bravo! ❤
How beautiful Italian language is!
Kirsten is speaking to him in Spanish (and English) and he replies primarily in Italian. Europeans speak multiple languages; they embraces differences. We have it wrong here.
MopedaStyle, his speaking sounds beautiful cause you can't catch his accent... northern Italy accent is horrible
@@angeloguerrini8017 just shut up already. His accent is super nice and he speaks perfect Italian. And i'm from Rome and i live in Milan. Let's not shame each other for the sake of nothing.
@@tankar9974 calm down please, don't be so serious, I'm from northern Italy too, northern accent is patently bad, tuscan or roman accent for exemple are more pleasant.
Peace
@@angeloguerrini8017 i'm chill af, you're the one completely out of sorts. Northern accent being "bad" is not patent, it's simply your own perception, hence your opinion.
Which actually means nothing on a collective level.
Beautiful home. Strong character. Modern convenience. Perfect. G-daddy would be pleased!
Alfredo, that is magnificent!!!!
From one architect to another, that is a perfect renovation done with lots of love and respect.
Curious, has anyone else done the same in the old town?
This place took my breath away. So warm and welcoming. I liked that he kept the past and still modernized it. I'd love to live here.
Ah, this is the architect from a previous video, with the Brutalist country house in the Alpine region with the terrifying toilet and bidet. So fascinating to see how different his design ideas were for this house; the geometric lines of the appliances and industrial finishes complement the rough appearance of the structure and the soft lines of the vintage furniture to create beautifully balanced and inviting spaces. This is such a comfortable home. Thanks so much for posting this!
I think his wife may have drawn the line and added the comfort factor! I love both houses for different reasons . Equally inspiring .xx
How simple and humble place it's, yet full of golden past and forgotten generation's footprint. That man has honoured his forefathers humble beginnings and turned the past the present gem. Well done. If we don't honour the past, present is mere pleasure.
Lovely home....rustic yet elegant, another words, simply perfect.
The old Italy homes are the parts I love the most. and large farms. Wow his home is gorgeous.
Incredible home and restoration. Preserve the old. He is very talented.
Beautiful and inventive in its return to natural materials. He is a quiet genius, with a big idea. I like that he respected what his father and grandfather did. Bravo!
I ❤️ that man and I don't even know him. His intellect his movements his demeanour his appearance..... his ability to restore something ancient into something beautiful and livable
LOVE the shutters = what a genius solution, most people would simply go for something modern and boring!! What a great house...
Such respect and love for his great-grandfather’s work & effort.
Fantastic renovation! Leaving the old and adding some modern additions! Truly brilliant. 😍❤️👏🏻
I loved the house and also hearing him speak Italian. The language is so beautiful.
I absolutely love everything about this home , the artisan craftsmanship, simplicity and design , my absolute dream property ❤❤❤👏👏👏I wish all houses were as considered as this merging the old and new.
The Past if Fundamental !
Bravo! Essential and courageous to be said, especially in the postmodernist Brave New World, where the "new" is glorified and the "past" is a bitter remembrance of historical identity
I also can't understand why all these villages in Italy are derelict and ababdoned. To someone trapped in a post-industrial town in northern England it looks like paradise! It would not cost more than 20,000e to restore any of those properties in to a forever home.
wozzlepop
People may have had to leave their village to find work. They may have had no choice.
@@cgavin1 being born and raised in a village of 200 inhabitants circa in Lombardy, I had to move to Milan in order to go to university. But my soul is still in the mountains and I go back there whenever I can.
Wow this is incredible how this man loves his roots, family, history and old historical stuff. Very stylish, very loving and caring owner. House is great. But I didn't saw the daughters bedroom. And the cutie little doggy
Your grandfather would be proud of you...it's a lovely home!
Beyond belief beautiful.... character with new and old... love the grandfather connection, like they are living with us and through us.... great feel...
Fascinating home, love this look, a feeling of serenity!
Stunningly beautiful. Absolutely your ancestors would be over the moon , restored beautifully without loosing the integrity of the building. I hope it brings you and your family much happiness.
Simple yet extravagant, it sounds wrong but its the best description I could give of this home to someone. The framing of the openings, the visible wires, the graciοus door at the "office". All of them shout that this home isn't just for existing in it, it encourages you to get out of comfort zones and be active.
I think it's wonderful that people stay put in the same place for generations. In the same house is even better! It provides the sense of roots. Stability. Belonging.
For someone who was uprooted many times in my life, believe me when I say; The best thing you can do for your children is to give them a sense of belonging. It doesn't matter where you are, it matters that you don't go, that is, if you can possibly help it.
God bless you and your family, Alfredo! Your family home is beautiful! Thank you, Kirsten, for the upload.
This is such a beautiful house. I love how he kept so much of the original design and materials. I particularly like the stone interior and concertina wooden office doors. And of course the bathroom.
I love this, honor your grandfather and his love life and hard work. A new house would never have the love and soul this house has. this is a dream house, restoring it, preserving it... This is absolutely wonderful. The atmosphere is priceless. Your ancestors are very proud of your ingenuity. You are definitely not crazy. Others will follow.
Fantastico !!! You did a fabuloso job ! Love the wooden shutters !
Great idea . Congratulations !

What on earth are you talking about? I don't believe most of us have any clue what you mean, with all due respect. Thank you.
Wow!!! He made it so stunning!! Just beautiful!
I love the folding doors he kept, that his great grandfather made!
I loved how you burned the doors to make them jet black. I’ve seen the burnt wood technique to bring out the texture of the wood, I don’t care for that look but pushing that process so not only is the grain black but also the wood, classic!
He should do the same for the shutters of the bathroom window to match the look of the house.
@@mikecranapple8878 -I agree, love the shutters idea but black would be better.
Just beautiful! The house... The story behind it... The love and respect for the past of this house.

So beautiful! You are so blessed to live in such a lovely place!
What a beautiful home - the perfect blend of old and new. The colors and textures, the sound of the fountain, the view...it looks like Heaven!
Italy is the most civilized place on earth. That is why they have an abundance of people like Mr Vanotti...
This is true wealth; inheritance, renovation, addition, and preservation. I wish more families would live this way.
Love this. Where does his daughter sleep?
The house facing south with the kitchen there and the fire place in the center, perfect! also the bedroom facing north where sleeping in summer is cooler. The bathroom, fabulously well done! I know this area very well, not far from Sondrio and backed against the cliffs of the Panoramica! below Montagna I think, next to the power station! This is fine work! So very needed is persons that do not desire to wipe away all vestments of the past, yet work to incroporate these eliments into stunning emotional spaces! Lovely!
I liked hearing your Spanish Italian mix talking with him. Cool restoration
I see only subtitles.. 😂 Indian
Love this video..
Such a fun little home. It is so nice to hear - "My grandfather did this, my great grandfather did that".
Beautifully done. An amazing home
Came across this video and watched it for the second time. I love the idea of taking something so utilitarian and repurposing it while preserving it at the same time. And that it is a place where his family has roots just makes it even more special. It's really a brilliant project and a lovely home, and a really heartwarming video. Congratulazioni tutti!
Complemento!
Absolutely beautifully realized resoration
I love that bathroom! Everything about this home is so stylishly and cleverly done and I love that he has repurposed a building that's been in his family for a long time. I'm sure his great-grandparents would be proud of him.

He's not crazy he is smart. Great video! Wonderful place to see. Thank you for sharing!
He refers to what the Italians think of him. I can relate as I, a British, bought a small very old house in a tiny hamlet on the mountains. The sad thing is all the houses are empty apart from mine and another one! People in the nearby village think I'm crazy to buy and live in this house😳😩
I hope there are lots of "crazy one" would love to renovate and restore old houses like him.
Those abandoned buildings holds memories but cannot tell.
I love how architects are immune from flies and bugs entering their homes...
What's wrong with bugs and flies? Building a home that will have entire side of my house open up - will open windows on the opposite side to let the bugs fly on thru...
@@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb And it will let hornets and wasps build huge nests where they are protected from the weather.
meh. People like to point out the ONE LITTLE PROBLEM. What about trade-offs?
Windows and doors constantly open on hot days:
+ fresh air, doesn't go stale
+ feels like outside
+ inside doesn't heat up beyond outside temperature
+ no need to install AC (considering this is a low-budget conversion)
- possibly bugs
Not such a difficult choice unless you're really afraid of bugs.
@@dontrend5956 It seems unlikely to me that hornets and wasps would have the opportunity at all to build a nest inside a house that isn't abandoned. Maybe your local species are somehow worse than any I have ever met.
Flies don't live next to mountains, in cold areas.
This guy is SUPER cool. I bet he has made his "family" past and present, so proud. Great video! Thanks.
His Works are the best one ...
This so beautiful, calm, peaceful, historic, and most of all perfect spacing. This home has all the space it needs. This is a not just a box. It's modern historic.
I'm so jealous. Amazing (Man/Owner/Maker). Amazing story. THis house exudes a feeling. Who can say that.

This is the best and most interesting video I have seen. The old structure truly alive. His great grand father must be smiling from above. He must be glad to see his grandson respect the past. His daughter seems most excited, and would hopefully keep the house in the future.
Stunning reconstruction and a lovely and cozy home, but where was the daughters bedroom?
Maybe the parents are divorced, and she only comes on weekends, so no bedroom for her.
@GD Daddy could very well be sleeping on the couch when his daughter visits.
It's a holidays house I think.
at her grandparents place - I imagine the 'main' farm house is still there
