The fact that Zhang Fei kidnap Xiahou Ji (who were still a kid) and forced her to be his bride solidified him to be the most controversial character in DW history. And i don't know what the F' omega force were thinking but why they make Xiahou Ji and Zhang Fei relationship as a romantic one?
even if they decided to do that, they should've made her older and more appropriate, wanna ignore the historical stuff, Im totally fine with that but make her look... ya know... appropriate..
There were a ton of other officers that did similar things. Cao cao for example was known as a notorious Cuckolder not so much that he was into it himself--- but that he took vassals or defeated enemies wives and did 'things' to them. This happened among other people as well, and I think it's pretty hinted that Sun Ce and Zhou Yu took the Qiao sisters by force against their father's wishes-- though they likely atleast from the Three kingdoms perspective fine with it. Zhang Fei is a small fry, though his beating of his own men was apparently really really bad, he definitely should be lower not #1 XD.
@@marthlink5015 The Two Qiaos were offered to them both by their fathers and they willingly went with both men. It's also very well known that Lady Wu treated them even better than her own daughter and Zhou Yu's whole decision to even contend with Chibi was because Cao Cao wanted the Two Qiaos which got him and Lady Wu real mad thus Zhou Yu personally wanted his head to appease his wife.
Ma Chao was a genuine murderer. Held a family hostage and then murdered them. For nothing. And Zhang Fei...... Yeah he's pretty self explanatory. Zhuge Liang deserves a slight mention. As no one really points out the fact that he stationed Guan Yu in Jing, thus the battle of fan castle happened.
Wei was having rebellions in Jing because Cao Cao was overworking the farmers so much they rebelled Guan Yu marched to support them. But he arrived late and the rebels and their families were executed by Cao Ren.
As a Chinese historian, Ma Chao also abandoned his family, was really a butcher and actually started to fight Cao Cao before Cao killed his 200 or more family members. As for Guan Yu, it was said that Zhuge Liang told him to withdraw from Jing but apparently Yu didn’t really care as he was boasting his own ego and image
Also, generally speaking, Guan Yu was tasked to stay in Jing by not only Zhuge Liang but his brother Liu Bei as he was probably the only guy to be considered a challenge to invade. Instead, Liu took Huang Zhao and Zhang with him to Yi
Both Liu Bei and Cao Cao are controversial! Cao Cao is a ruthless villain who also happened to be a slick bastard who used the Emperor to push his ambitions (that’s something that Machiavelli would preach!) and as for Liu Bei, he’s portrayed as an icon of benevolence yet he’s a two faced backstabbing douche who preaches one thing yet does another.
Lol i agree. But my problem with liu bei is people think hes benevolent when hes really not much different from cao cao. Cao Cao was well known to serve his own interests. While certainly in modern times an asshole, in war time hes the perfect ruler for the situation
Hi! Chinese historian here! There’s loads of reasons why Liu Bei is viewed negatively despite not actually being what people said. Firstly, if we’re talking about Gongsun Zhang, that is easy to say. When Liu Bei was serving him, he realized that the warlord Kong Rong descendant of Confucius was under attacked by Yellow Turban Guan Hai. He was tasked to attack the yellow turbans and Tian Kai, Gong’s general assisted Liu Bei and helped him have more status. Later, Tao Qian was attacked by Cao Cao, initially, Liu Bei and Taishi Ci defended heavily but they were almost defeated without Lu Bu killing everything he saw in Puyang. Tao Qian was reportedly offering Liu Bei the governor ship but he refused at first, only making him the governor of Xiapi (the capital). So, in this first part, he isn’t that bad. (Second part) When Lu Bu claimed Xu province for himself, Liu Bei had to surrender but he did conspire against him in a good way, that was because Lu Bu was really terrible and took his wives and family. Liu Bei then asked Cao Cao and together they did stop Lu Bu. Now, this is where things get controversial. Cao Cao was not really a good guy, as the video states he killed Lu Boshi and his family, Xu massacre, and he was a really good war leader not a really good peace maker. That being said, Liu Bei, Dong Cheng and the Emperor’s wife conspired against his tyranny because he had gone more control. Moreover, Cao Cao placed Che Zhou as the head of Xu instead of Liu Bei who was supposed to be given that role. Later, when he fled to Yuan Shao, Shao wasn’t that good either. He fought with Zhao Yun (Gong’s general) and was really arrogant and annoying, that being said when Liu Bei realized his head was at stake he just fled to Jing. Now this part when he is in Jing isn’t his fault as he was betrayed by Cai Mao and others, he then escorted the people and other men to JiangXia and Changsha (barely escaping btw) and luckily with Wu, he set up camp. Now, when he conquered Yi, another controversial move, it is reasonable to see why. Even I agree that Yi’s conquest was bloody but in actual history, it is said that Liu Zhang was really incompetent and would’ve surrendered to Cao Cao if he won Chi Bi. That being said, Zhang’s officials Zhang Song and Fa Zheng actually helped Liu Bei planned this and told him where to go, so it really isn’t his fault
Cao Pi could have made it into the list. In the novel, Cao Pi did every trick in the book as a way to secure his position as Cao Cao's successor. He knew his father favored Cao Zhi more than him, so he decided to "weaken" Cao Zhi's integrity by indulging him with wine. And even after Cao Pi got to succeed Cao Cao, he didn't stop tormenting Cao Zhi by relocating his residence constantly that the latter died due to depression. Cao Pi also ordered a painter to make a painting that depicted Yu Jin's surrender to Guan Yu. When Yu Jin begged for forgiveness, Cao Pi forgave him. However he ordered Yu Jin to visit Cao Cao's tomb. And it was at that tomb Yu Jin saw the painting. Yu Jin died not long after the humiliation. Last but not least, Cao Pi was responsible for Zhen Ji's death. After Cao Pi declared himself as the Emperor of Wei, he alienated himself from her in favor of his other wife. Zhen Ji felt neglected, and decided to go against his order to stay at Ye. During his final encounter with Zhen Ji, Cao Pi told her to commit suicide. While he regretted of his action, it was too late for him to amend his mistake. Some said his death was the karma for his actions.
100% Cao Pi has done some pretty ruthless games however his personality was pretty on par with ruthless especially in his playable debut so he isnt super controversial because the developers made him kind of ruthless just like his historical counterpart, so he doesnt make the list
@@TheNightowlGaming Wouldn't the part in which he told Zhen Ji to commit suicide a controversial one? Because in all of his playable debuts, Cao Pi has always been portrayed as a gentle & devoted husband despite his ruthlessness towards even his own kin.
Hi Chinese historian here! There’s a lot more things Cao Pi had done, mainly, even though he contribute to the development of Wei, he wasn’t that really good of a conquered like his father. Now about Zhen Ji, that is really controversial some say that the suicide account did happened because he had an affair but others say she died from illness and Cao Pi just moved along like nothing. What’s notably bad is his treatment towards Cao Hong. Cao Hong was the younger cousin of Cao Cao and was really important as he played a fair role in Guandu, Chibi, and Hanzhong. I was surprised that Cao Hong still isn’t a playable character even though he deserves to be, but besides that let’s get into the real point. Cao Pi despised Cao Hong as he thought Cao Hong was selfish for not lending money to the former prince, as such Cao Hong was removed from all his status DESPITE CAO CAO ACTUALLY CARED FOR HIM, and also imprisoned and threatened to execute him. It was only I think his mother (I might be wrong) and other officials that took a while for Cao Pi to change his mind and only demote him. As such, Cao Hong promised to sleep at the city’s walls as for his gratitude. Man, Cao Pi really is a bitch
Chinese historian here, Gan Ning is indeed a serial killer, not only he was harassing Yi with his bandit and pirate like tactics but he surrendered to Liu Biao just to have some fun in fighting. After a while he actually stood his ground against Sun Ce, even killing Ling Cao, Ling Tong’s father. But he had a rough time with Huang Zu and he decided to join Sun forces. Then, he somehow managed to cause more trouble, he had a fight with Lu Meng, Ling Tong, and nearly started a fight despite the laws preventing this
@@LucasLLLIIIUUU Lu Meng was furious because Gan Ning killed a little kid with arrows firing at the kid for pleasure. Only thing is Lu Meng's mother told Lu meng to not kill Gan Ning because Sun Quan would be mad at him. Gan Ning is a pychopath killer.
I’d like to give my own honorable mention to Zhang He, I never researched that thoroughly on his historical achievements or from the novel but I’m aware that he was feared by both his allies & foes, even Zhuge Liang because of his intelligence. At Mt. Dingjun, I read that Liu Bei was actually trying to eliminate Zhang He primarily instead of Xiahou Yuan! And then of course it goes without saying that Koei made him a lot more entertaining and feminine than how the figure was in real life.
@@Navoleon. Interesting, I used to theorize that since his forename name in English is He, which sounds the same as someone (a lady) dramatically saying “heyyyy”. So therefore Koei turned him into a girly-like warrior to set him apart from the others. But your point sounds a lot more logical lol
@@robertclements4492 Ahh I see. Yes, it makes a lot of sense since the producer (Akihiro Suzuki) is Japanese himself. Btw, he said that this year there is going to be a Dynasty Warriors news. He apologized for no news last year, though there was a Dynasty Warriors mobile game.
@@Navoleon. The producer says that they’re in the early stages of DW10 for sure, and I couldn’t be happier because I just want history to repeat itself (no pun intended) as the jump from DW6 to 7 & 8, I know 10 has the power to become the definitive rising phoenix above all if Koei really pours their blood sweat and tears into it. They’re replacing the open world in 9 for a different innovation, but the rest right now is all up for speculation. I never tried out the mobile game, but saw some ads for it not too long ago.
Imagine my shock a nation that prides itself on equity and bettering the lives of peasants were some of the worst people imaginable. Somethings never change.
I think that when it comes to them, Xu Zhu is definitely not like his in game counterpart but he also never did any really nasty things in history so he's just fine, similar to Zhang he, definitely not historically accurate but people like him
Zhang he is just a Japanese joke for a gay boy. Xu Chu I believe was just because Koei thought he was large (I guess they thought Zhang Fei and Guan Yu weren’t that big either???)
Zhang Jiao basically started the Yellow Turban Rebellion because the Han Dynasty heavily tax farmers and take their produces. He was basically the Jesus of that era. His followers were ruthless killers though. Sad he didn't make the list.
Yeah I could see that but the reason I didnt put him on is because in the games he isnt presented super nobly just like history, his people were savages and im sure that he wasnt the noblest of people, so thats why I kept him off
in reality after xiahou dun lost his eye he is useless and stuck at desk job for the rest of his whole career but his cousin xiahou yuan is the only one with more achievement and fought until he died at mount dinjun
I agree with: - Liu Bei: I wish he is making to the top 5, tbh - Zhao Yun: tired of seeing him as the poster boy, tbh. - Ma Chao: the most hypocritical character of Dynasty Warriors. Glad that Wang Yi becomes playable to pursue and kill Ma Chao 😂 - Xiahouji: you know her history, right? She is kidnapped and married to Zhang Fei in a very young age. - Zhang Fei: total jerk and douchebag, he is the epitome of everything wrong with Shu. Glad he was killed by his men tho 😂
For sure, but because he didnt do anything really nasty in history he's not necessarily controversial, he's just done dirty. Maybe Ill do a top 10 done dirty list lol
I was expecting more Jin character’s honestly, there is a section out there that isn’t a fan of how Jin was formed and or how some of the characters are a tad white washed
Yea the Zhao Yun thing for me is one I agree with. No idea why the chose him as the face of the franchise. But as someone that’s favorite character is Ma Chao I do dislike that Zhao Yun gets so much screen time. And on the battlefield they pretty much have him as a god 😂
I never even looked up the history like that, but I still knew that Zhang Fe was on the list. When I read that his own ppl chopped his head in his sleep, I immediately said in my 'Boondocks voice', "What did he do to make his own ppl THAT mad??"
Great list and I agree with almost all of them! I’m honestly a little surprised that Sima Yi isn’t on the list. A brilliant tactician who simultaneously helped strengthen and defend Wei and also through seditious means was the cause of the start of its downfall.
@@TheNightowlGaming Ahh ok I gotcha, I wasn’t entirely sure if the controversial element was coming more from how they are portrayed in the game or their historical counterpart. If it’s in the game then that makes sense lol
Hi Chinese historian here! Sima Yi actually was pretty loyal to Cao Cao and Cao Pi, but overtime during the years of the Cao Dynasty he was promoted and had too much power especially he was fighting against Shu. No matter how many people tried to stop him, his mind and power was too much for them so much so that he is responsible for having his line vassalizing the emperors similarly how Cao Cao a loyal warlord actually controlled Liu Xie.
@@tonys9397 I think its just common sense that Sima Zhao had to do what he do to get to the top and eliminated all his enemies. He didn't kill those who surrender to him. He still shows mercy to Liu Shan.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the biggest controversy surrounding Dio Chan, that being rather not she truly existed, or if she was just a made up character in the novel/games.
"The men are uneasy because supplies are low. But you, supplymaster, can loan me something to appease them. For the sake of the armies moral I must borrow your head"- Cao Cao scapegoating the master of supplies.
In history, Gan Ning behaved like a youxia (vigilante) which might explain his “somewhat noble” personality. He was also said to befriend local officials, but those who treated him badly (this includes government officials) would be robbed of their possessions (wealth) by him and his gang.
Ma Chao to me is somewhat justified in attacking Cao Cao. Wei was training and amassing troops on their boarder. Ma Chao and Han Sui deemed this as preparation for an invasion. When questioned Cao Cao said no I'm just passing through to attack Zhang Lu. Now Cao Cao being known for being a liar and untrustworthy Ma Chao went back to other warlords and they all agreed to attack Cao Cao leading to the battle of Tong Gate. Ma Chao would continue to resist after that is when Ma Teng and the rest were killed. In regards to Wang Yis family. Wang Yi and Ma Chaos wife were friends when Ma Chao was away Wang Yi had Ma Chaos wife killed. Ma Chao hears of this and does what he does killing Wang Yis husband and her son.
Kind of surprised that Sun Ce wasn't given a mention. Supposedly in history he purged those of the Taoist faith. Not to mention his execution of Gan Ji because Sun Ce saw him as a threat to his rule.
Dude I always said out of the 3 leaders of Wu we saw in the game Sun Quan was the worst lol He got hard carried by his strategist Zhou Yu, Lusu, Lu meng and Lu xun. Wu fell off hard after Yi Ling they couldnt push north even with Lu Xun, he pretty much destroyed Wu with his terrible decisions towards the end of his life. Lianshi deserved better 😂
Xiahou dun isnt mentioned in the books but he is all over the various historical records as cao caos right hand man militarily. At least in the beginning days before zhang liao and xu huang. Was given alot of solo commands
I'm surprised no dong Zhuo on this list.. interesting note about guan Yu.. his posthumous title was marquis zhongmou.. the "mou" is used for people who failed to live up to their name.. and Zhang fei? It's no question why he was murdered by his own men, he got what he deserved.. it was said that xuande often told him when he had I go away and leave him in charge that he knew of his anger an temper and that he needed to be cool and calm with everyone..
Personally I love three kingdoms, I watched and read the romance and real history part. And shu has been too in ur face in the romance version. They made Shu to be the noble and no one in there can do any wrong, on the other hand, Wu has been reduced and altered to bring lights to shu, that is why I hate the shu, especiay the three brothers
Yeah but I dont think people really dislike Zhang He's in game iteration, definitely different from history but I think people like his weapon enough to look past it lol
I agree 1000% about Zhao Yun, in fact me and my buddies who used to play and share DW together we all ended abhorring him, and by the intro of DW 6 we started nicknaming him Son Goku or even spear Jesus.
I know it's usually not looked at as what you should act like but I really take a lot of my morals from stories like these. I reward loyalty and honor above most other things. Honesty. Much of the values that are showed in this story, are what I look for in friends and a eventual significant other
I thought we're gonna have Zhang He because how different he is from history.. But goddamn, the twist is darker.. Especially with Xiahou Ji, Ma Chao, and Zhang Fei..
Xiahou Dun is my favorite DW character but when I played my ROTK 11, kinda disappointed that his stats is not that great xD. He's just like a general, unlike his cousin Yuan or the 5 elite generals of wei. He's still my favorite and my go to character 👍
Zhao Yun is the face of the franchise, since the beginning, not much is written of his history but he was one of 5 tiger generals… that’s pretty badass and I don’t get the fact when you were talking Dian Chao you didn’t mention that… she’s not real, she wasn’t a person… also I hate that the characters are now in more of anime style and how much they sexualize the characters…. Like bro, kids play this… smh…
You didn't talk about the fact that Gan Ning killed a servant boy despite promising Lu Meng he'd spare him. He had him tied up to the ship and his men shot him with arrows.
I have to agree with the list although 4 mentions I am surprised were not added that is Wei Yan, I mean I love Wei Yan and love the way he's done in the DW series but he was nothing like that at all, He talked normally wasn't dumb and nothing like the Novel version of Wei Yan. The next is Zhang He, I mean how in the Blue hell was he not in this list, he is one of the campest characters ever even in Kessen 2 he was the same in the novel he was a great general and nothing like his portrayal in the DW series Xu hu/Chu, how is he not on the list he wasn't a dumb fat tub of lard, he was a strong muscular man I mean he fought Ma Chao naked in the Novel, could U imagine seeing DW version Xu Chu doing that that's just so cringe. Xu Chu is a badass. Lastly Xu Huang, love him in the novel and the DW games but was he anything like he is in the DW games, not from what I've read from the Novel and I've read it more than once.
list is ranked based on characters where in the games they are a certain way positively but they did really horrible things, the revamp video is where I talk about characters who need to be changed and have been done dirty
@@TheNightowlGamingI wish they depicted what happened to her after Xia Pi as in one of the legends she killed herself when CaoCao took her as one of his concubines and treated her similar to how DongZhuo did.
How did Xiahou Dun even fall into the list and how can you say he did close to nothing? Xiahou Dun was one of the most badass fighters in Cao Cao's retinue and together with his cousin, Yuan, were both cousins of Cao Cao and also his loyal general that was already with him prior to even being in the alliance to fight Dong Zhuo. All that are in both Sanguozi and also ROTK. Xiahou Dun in fact was such a badass and great administrator that Cao Cao didn't really pull him into battle unless it's needed and he guarded Henan for Cao Cao real well. His most famous acts was when he took his own eye that was shot by an arrow, yanking it out and eating it right infront of his troops and the enemy whilst engaging with Lu Bu and continued fighting, frightening even Lu Bu himself and this was in ROTK. His 2nd feat was when he was in his camp at night during the Hanzhong campaign, his patrol party was patrolling and scouting the next plan of attack when some troops mistaken them as a full regiment of soldiers and surrendered to them and the scouts brought them back to Xiahou Dun who then told him about the loose defense of one of the city. Xiahou Dun didn't believe it and rode out in the night to see it only to find out the news was real so he rode back, packed his forces out for an assault and they charged at the gates and took it down in no time forcing Zhang Lu to panic and surrender shortly after. His third famous act was stopping Guan Yu at the final gate before Guan Yu headed towards Yuan Shao's place to find Liu Bei and battled Guan Yu on the spot for over 100 bouts before someone stopped them bearing news from Cao Cao himself. The only mistake Xiahou Dun did was that he's too trusting on news and a overzealous guy where he would believe that a general would retreat then give chase only to always fall into the same type of ambush.
Also, ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME?! Zhao Yun is fucking legendary in history AND also in ROTK, especially in ROTK. Zhao Yun had many feats in the novel being the Battle of Changban which we all know as this point where he singlehandedly slew into the enemy column of thousands, slew one of Cao Cao's officer Xiahou En and took Cao Cao's other prized sword, the Blue Blade off Xiahou En and fought his way out of the column again to deliver Ah Dou back to Liu Bei with no scratches to Ah Dou at all. He was soo valiant that Cao Cao was even to have rumoured to have said that he wanted Zhao Yun to serve him at all cost after hearing what he did at Changban. Then you also had the time where Liu Bei was kept as a political hostage in Wu's territory and Zhao Yun was there as Liu Bei's bodyguard. Wu's officers had assassins hiding behind the blinds when Liu Bei was having a meeting with Lu Su. However, Zhao Yun felt their presence and slightly unsheathed his sword which alarmed Lu Su. Lu Su then asked him about why he's pulling his sword which he state that they ain't the only ones in the building which then caused the other 6 assassins to appear and bow to Lu Su since their covers are blown. Lu Su then pushed the incident away as someone playing tricks on them to cause the split of the Sun-Liu alliance and let the matter rest. Then you also have him, who's about 75 by the time of the 2nd Northern Expedition, still leading forces right into the fray of battle and that alone is rare with so far, the only person to do that is Huang Zhong who ironically was also Liu Bei's general. Also, if you think Zhao Yun is nothing then why there's soo many dramas in China made in his honor or better yet, even the god damn Koreans did a collab for a drama with China about him. Not only that, games won't even use him as a character. It's because he's that legendary in ROTK and potentially in history that people know about him.
Mmm i don't think I said either character said didn't have feats, XD is exaggerated much more than his historical counter part which brings in the controversy because the games and novel give him much more, not saying he's a slouch or anything by that means, he's a great character and one of my top q0 this is just a list of those characters that generate controversy. With zhao yun if you been around long enough in the online DW community you'll know Shu and thus by circumstance Zhao Yun receives a lot of hate. For being promoted and put on the cover and for being apart of shu, is it a fair assessment no, and I dont agree with it. But it is what currently circulates thru the community and I can't do much but commentate on the truth
Whoa hold up, didnt mention zhao yun. In the novel theres an entire chapter about how zhao yun fought thru caocao's army to bring back a baby. He even killed caocao's personal sword bearers and stole his sword. He was even placed as liubei's personal bodyguard when liubei married sun quan's sister. He was counted as one of the strongest tiger generals of shu. U sure u read the novel? Which version did u read cause they made a few versions.
Zhao Yun's not controversial, maybe in the sense he didnt do as much to be on the cover, but dude was basically perfect, in game, in history, in novel, people just dont like him cause of him being popular, but hes not controversial
@TheNightowlGaming let me know when you Start to read them. I would be very much interested in hearing your take on things after you read those 4 books. Given the details in those books, I'm willing to bet some opinions you have will be changed lol.
amazing top 10 characters in the video and i not shock the most controversial in china history is from shu and the game like to hide some of the history of the shu characters still this make me to love dyasty warrirors more
Cao Cao was a real dirtbag, he executed people just for the sake of executing people, was no different than dong Zhuo.. I hated cao pi cause of how he made Zhen commit suicide.. sun Quan was hilarious with one thing he said "if I'm drunk and I tell you to execute (insert name here), don't do it".. diao chan didn't exist though.. all in all, it's not a bad list..
Dude why don’t you actually explain the things they’ve done? You are so vague how do you just say “ yup his very controversial “ or “ his history is dark “ and not even say why? Super lazy list imo sorry love DW though xoxox
ig crybaby is fitting for your name... lol im kidding but i explain why each person is on the list, if you want to learn about their history you can look it up, this is about the DW characters not the history of them, plus if i explained each characters dark history it would make the vid too long
I think you dont know chinese history. Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Ma Chao, and Zhang Fei is perfectly portrayed. I’m too lazy to explain but let me give an example, Zhang Fei is actually rich man working as butcher and impressed with Liu Bei and then follow him to serve justice. Please research by yourself for the others.
Uhh i don't know it perfectly, but I do know there are things added to the characters that are fictional.. Zhang fei drunk, ma chao vengeance for fathers death when he caused it, liu bei being a cannibal, guan yu growing arrogant over time.. lol
Because the novel is heavily bias towards Shu. The games are reflecting it. Based of the records of the three kingdoms by chen shou, who at least in the rotk games is an officer of shu.

Yu Jin's was really sad, Cao Pi kept reminding Yu Jin of his mistake, the man died from depression.
100% Cao Pi has done some pretty ruthless games however his personality was pretty on par with ruthless especially in his playable debut so he isnt super controversial because the developers made him kind of ruthless just like his historical counterpart, so he doesnt make the list
Was Zhen Ji's suicide forced too? I remember reading that he ordered her to commit suicide.
A child character married to a drunk violent old guy, who kidnapped her... Them 2 together it's just a big no
100% i think theres a way to make her work, just need to make her better
Who we talking about?
@@Spyro757 Xiahou Ji
bro is the true PDF File of the three kingdom era 💀🙏
When you said zhang fei was garbage, I knew was the most biggest understatement in history
He was a Garbage
🔥
Nice list.
DW loves to make character completely different then their Novel and Historical counterparts.
That and the fact some of the characters are just dark
Yeah, the character appearances mainly based on Opera Three Kingdoms.
Gan Ning in history was a serial killer.
Ling Tong can attest to that
😬
Gan Ning is a pychopath killer.
bro clearly potrays as an outlaw lol
I’d like to give my own honorable mention to Zhang He, I never researched that thoroughly on his historical achievements or from the novel but I’m aware that he was feared by both his allies & foes, even Zhuge Liang because of his intelligence. At Mt. Dingjun, I read that Liu Bei was actually trying to eliminate Zhang He primarily instead of Xiahou Yuan! And then of course it goes without saying that Koei made him a lot more entertaining and feminine than how the figure was in real life.
Yeah, if I remember correctly it's because his family name Zhang is pronounced as "cho" in Japanese, which means butterfly.
@@Navoleon. Especially since DW9 became a very sweet game when they patched things and fixed a lot of the bugs
6 out of the characters featured are from Shu.
Somehow I'm not surprised about that.
Imagine my shock a nation that prides itself on equity and bettering the lives of peasants were some of the worst people imaginable. Somethings never change.
Ye its insane
Extremely surprised neither Zhang He or Xu Chu made this list.
Yup, unfortunately, Zhang Jiao died of sickness and as we already know, his brothers got killed.
Yeah I could see that but the reason I didnt put him on is because in the games he isnt presented super nobly just like history, his people were savages and im sure that he wasnt the noblest of people, so thats why I kept him off
@ArtificerID He had a small role, but made a big impact.
@@kendonl.taylor5111Definitely yes, the whole story would be different if he didn't rebel.
@@TheNightowlGaming I agree, Koei Tecmo did him wrong. I prefectly understand that you made your list based on the games.
in reality after xiahou dun lost his eye he is useless and stuck at desk job for the rest of his whole career but his cousin xiahou yuan is the only one with more achievement and fought until he died at mount dinjun
Haha for sure, still a cool.character in the games
I agree with:
- Liu Bei: I wish he is making to the top 5, tbh
- Zhao Yun: tired of seeing him as the poster boy, tbh.
- Ma Chao: the most hypocritical character of Dynasty Warriors. Glad that Wang Yi becomes playable to pursue and kill Ma Chao 😂
- Xiahouji: you know her history, right? She is kidnapped and married to Zhang Fei in a very young age.
- Zhang Fei: total jerk and douchebag, he is the epitome of everything wrong with Shu. Glad he was killed by his men tho 😂
I think Xu Chu would have been a good honorable mention, as a character who is not at all like their historical counterpart hahaha
For sure, but because he didnt do anything really nasty in history he's not necessarily controversial, he's just done dirty. Maybe Ill do a top 10 done dirty list lol
@@TheNightowlGaming fair enough. He was kind of a dick, but not on the level of genocide or words that rhyme with grape…
I was expecting more Jin character’s honestly, there is a section out there that isn’t a fan of how Jin was formed and or how some of the characters are a tad white washed
Yeah I could see that, most Jin characters are pretty close to who they were in the book/history and dont bring up a lot of controversy
Yea the Zhao Yun thing for me is one I agree with. No idea why the chose him as the face of the franchise. But as someone that’s favorite character is Ma Chao I do dislike that Zhao Yun gets so much screen time. And on the battlefield they pretty much have him as a god 😂
I dont mind it but people def dont like it, ma chao is a beast
because Zhao Yun is better than Ma boy in every way
Once Koei makes Chen Dao a playable character, Zhao Yun's career is over.
I never even looked up the history like that, but I still knew that Zhang Fe was on the list. When I read that his own ppl chopped his head in his sleep, I immediately said in my 'Boondocks voice', "What did he do to make his own ppl THAT mad??"
Haha yep!
Great list and I agree with almost all of them! I’m honestly a little surprised that Sima Yi isn’t on the list. A brilliant tactician who simultaneously helped strengthen and defend Wei and also through seditious means was the cause of the start of its downfall.
Doesnt make him controversial, he's exactly the same way in the games so he's good lol
Surprised Sima Zhao didn’t make the list dude was pretty ruthless and in the game hes pretty laid back
Was he? hmm that makes sense if true though
@@TheNightowlGaming the whole Cao Mao incident was so controversial even his own uncle was upset with him
@@tonys9397 I think its just common sense that Sima Zhao had to do what he do to get to the top and eliminated all his enemies. He didn't kill those who surrender to him. He still shows mercy to Liu Shan.
bro is a son of sima yi and ain't smart , what do ya expect from him lol
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the biggest controversy surrounding Dio Chan, that being rather not she truly existed, or if she was just a made up character in the novel/games.
It is said she is a maid
"The men are uneasy because supplies are low. But you, supplymaster, can loan me something to appease them. For the sake of the armies moral I must borrow your head"- Cao Cao scapegoating the master of supplies.
👀
@@TheNightowlGaming LOL but then again, Liu Bei "wept with gratitude" when some farmer fed his wife to the 3 brothers haha!
Gan Ning being number 4 after he tied a child to a tree and unalived them with arrows is wild.
My goodness, is there a source for that 👀👀
welcome to acient china baby , that how they rolls lmao
In history, Gan Ning behaved like a youxia (vigilante) which might explain his “somewhat noble” personality. He was also said to befriend local officials, but those who treated him badly (this includes government officials) would be robbed of their possessions (wealth) by him and his gang.
Makes sense, Vigilante I could definitely see it
100% agree on the Zhang Fei call
😁
Yeah im sure there's some grey lines for most of the characters here, hard to believe what is definitive
Wait, what? Why Wang Yi kill her friend?
@@ekamandalaputra5517 because Ma Chao didn't release Wang Yi's son and husband
Kind of surprised that Sun Ce wasn't given a mention. Supposedly in history he purged those of the Taoist faith. Not to mention his execution of Gan Ji because Sun Ce saw him as a threat to his rule.
Yah but everything else overshadows that so hard that ppl usually love him
Also with this list all these people here, Sun Jian just chilling in the corner like the Chad he is
😎
Dude I always said out of the 3 leaders of Wu we saw in the game Sun Quan was the worst lol
He got hard carried by his strategist Zhou Yu, Lusu, Lu meng and Lu xun. Wu fell off hard after Yi Ling they couldnt push north even with Lu Xun, he pretty much destroyed Wu with his terrible decisions towards the end of his life.
Lianshi deserved better 😂
lol damn yeah he was not the greatest lol
Your vids have helped me through grinding in DW8XL Ambition Mode.
Haha lets go!
About to marathon the hell out of this channel happy I found it
Les go!! Glad you're enjoying the content!
Xiahou dun isnt mentioned in the books but he is all over the various historical records as cao caos right hand man militarily. At least in the beginning days before zhang liao and xu huang. Was given alot of solo commands
And before he lost his eye, DW amps him up by a ton which some ppl dont like
I'm surprised no dong Zhuo on this list.. interesting note about guan Yu.. his posthumous title was marquis zhongmou.. the "mou" is used for people who failed to live up to their name.. and Zhang fei? It's no question why he was murdered by his own men, he got what he deserved.. it was said that xuande often told him when he had I go away and leave him in charge that he knew of his anger an temper and that he needed to be cool and calm with everyone..
For sure, dong zhuo Is evil & never pretends to be nice so he's fine
Personally I love three kingdoms, I watched and read the romance and real history part. And shu has been too in ur face in the romance version. They made Shu to be the noble and no one in there can do any wrong, on the other hand, Wu has been reduced and altered to bring lights to shu, that is why I hate the shu, especiay the three brothers
that makes sense, and thats okay !
Great video!!! Zhang he should have been on this list!
Yeah but I dont think people really dislike Zhang He's in game iteration, definitely different from history but I think people like his weapon enough to look past it lol
Why has gan ning always reminded me of blackstar from soul eater 😂😂
lol nice
I agree 1000% about Zhao Yun, in fact me and my buddies who used to play and share DW together we all ended abhorring him, and by the intro of DW 6 we started nicknaming him Son Goku or even spear Jesus.
Spear Jesus is a good one haha
Also, Liu Bei's character is pretty bad in DW. He should be ambitious and charismatic but he's portrayed as wimpy and useless.
He's definitely got his flaws for sure lol
I know it's usually not looked at as what you should act like but I really take a lot of my morals from stories like these. I reward loyalty and honor above most other things. Honesty. Much of the values that are showed in this story, are what I look for in friends and a eventual significant other
And there's nothing wrong with that 😁
Oh thank you, it was a cool list.
I dont mind Xiahou Ji, but I would like her to be more grown up. She got same issue like Xiao sisters lol.
Lol I agree! Glad you enjoyed it!
I thought we're gonna have Zhang He because how different he is from history..
But goddamn, the twist is darker.. Especially with Xiahou Ji, Ma Chao, and Zhang Fei..
Yeah he's controversial for the way and people may dislike him for that but they love his weapons so he gets general praise
Xiahou Dun is my favorite DW character but when I played my ROTK 11, kinda disappointed that his stats is not that great xD. He's just like a general, unlike his cousin Yuan or the 5 elite generals of wei. He's still my favorite and my go to character 👍
he is among the most popular!
Cao Cao, the best character and Liu Bei. Both on the list. Im surprised Lu Bu isnt. 😎
😎😎
You didn't talk about the fact that Gan Ning killed a servant boy despite promising Lu Meng he'd spare him. He had him tied up to the ship and his men shot him with arrows.
Yeesh yeah he did som terrible things
Lu Meng was always an OG though. The guy is a legend.
I have to agree with the list although 4 mentions I am surprised were not added that is Wei Yan, I mean I love Wei Yan and love the way he's done in the DW series but he was nothing like that at all, He talked normally wasn't dumb and nothing like the Novel version of Wei Yan.
The next is Zhang He, I mean how in the Blue hell was he not in this list, he is one of the campest characters ever even in Kessen 2 he was the same in the novel he was a great general and nothing like his portrayal in the DW series
Xu hu/Chu, how is he not on the list he wasn't a dumb fat tub of lard, he was a strong muscular man I mean he fought Ma Chao naked in the Novel, could U imagine seeing DW version Xu Chu doing that that's just so cringe.
Oh gotcha@@TheNightowlGaming
I call Xiahouji a walking green screen, girl's non-existent.
lol ye
Diaochan ❤️ my girl did the right thing!
😂 she had her motivation and achieved it by any means necessary
Almost every character in Shu is controversial😂.
😂
Did you look into the books I said you should check out?
I did look into them! havent read em yet, wrote em down though pretty sure
@TheNightowlGaming let me know when you Start to read them. I would be very much interested in hearing your take on things after you read those 4 books. Given the details in those books, I'm willing to bet some opinions you have will be changed lol.
Here for Xiahouji
yeah...
amazing top 10 characters in the video and i not shock the most controversial in china history is from shu and the game like to hide some of the history of the shu characters still this make me to love dyasty warrirors more
Yep can definitely distinguish between the games and history
Shu topping again!
i really dont understand why people love shu so much lol
Great characters
For starter, Shu didn't commit any m@ssacr€. Wei did it the most and Wu did it a bit.
For sure every character has their dark moments
This is what happens when you don't do your research.
Talk to meh whatchu mean 😎😎
Zhang fei drunk, ma chao vengeance for fathers death when he caused it, liu bei being a cannibal, guan yu growing arrogant over time.. lol
after watching this video, now I understand why people don't like Shu🥲
yeah 🥲🥲 but in the games they're good !
Because the novel is heavily bias towards Shu. The games are reflecting it. Based of the records of the three kingdoms by chen shou, who at least in the rotk games is an officer of shu.
