We Have a NEW SKATEBOARDING SIM! (True Skate on PC)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2024
- True Skate used to be one of my all time favorite skateboarding games on iPhone, and almost 5 years later, it's now officially out for PC on Steam. First off, I think it's AMAZING that we have so many skateboarding games and sims to choose from. That being said, I do think some things need to change in True Skate on PC for it to take the top spot for most realistic skateboarding sim. Like I said in the video, True Skate will be reading through the comments on this video and taking into consideration EVERYONE'S feedback, so let's leave as many constructive criticism comments as we can so it can hopefully be shaped into the best skateboarding sim.

Oh, you're still reading the description? That's kinda weird. I guess I'll tell you a bit about myself. My name is Garrett Ginner, I like skateboarding, playing video games, and having fun. I have my main channel where I post vlogs and that kinda stuff, and I decided to start this channel because I've always had a love for playing video games. Now, I'm not actually good at any video games, so I spend a lot of my time playing action games like Skater XL, Descenders, Beam NG, Skate 3, etc. but I'm always looking for new games to play. Ok I really don't know what to type here so I'm just gonna stop. Bye now.

As always, let’s keep the comments as constructive as possible. I know (hopefully) that True Skate will be reading through the comments and listening to what we have to say, so let’s do what we can do to shape this into one of the best sims we can 🙏🏼
How much they pay you?
Because your bsing who want a non physical skateboard same? The dude u made look like a kid trying to do a flip because the tricks look shit
The controls are cool, I think it would be beneficial to have the option to change from true skate controls to something like Sessions or Skater XL. Love the videos!
Yeah after I posted the video I realized that I wanted to say that left/right foot controls should be OPTION, not mandatory.
I think the “hardcore” sim players won’t touch the game without them, but I think True Skate’s already existing mobile audience won’t mind the current controls at all.
I think having the option to toggle either version of controls would be perrffeccttt
Each game differentiates itself by controls. Pretty sure it'd be copyright infringement to straight up copy
Man, after nearly a decade of playing Skate 3 it's an absolute joy to see all these skateboard games hit the market.
Also, you're the coach Frank of True Skate. That's dope af.
It's looking really promising the only game breaking issue for me is the controls like what you said for that sim style to be more user friendly the skater xl and session control scheme is ideal. Promising game with amazing potential.
I somewhat disagree, tbh. What's the appeal of True Skate if they just did what "the other game" is doing, why even develop it then? They clearly seem the have a vision of something that's not been done before. It's very similar to the situation with legacy controls in SESSION, imho. Legacy controls compromised what SESSION actually is supposed to be.
Why not just play a game already years ahead like session??
@@KJ_Styles tbf I completely get your point but me personally I'd love to have an option between the control schemes but that's a great point you've made
@@lolilll because new games also deserve a chance I play session and love it but I also want to try out its competitors and give them a chance
This game looks really promising. The controls will definitely need some getting used to but I'm down for the challenge. The only thing I would want is the option to have the sticks be left foot/right foot instead of front foot/back foot. Especially skating goofy. It makes more sense to have the left stick fick down and the right stick flick right for a kickflip imo
I love the phone controls. If I could sync my phone and use it as a controller for this game I think that'd be great!
wouldnt work tho
One thing that would be pretty cool is sort of dampening the audio whenever the character is tricking off a ledge/ down stairs. That way when the character lands- it’ll feel much more dramatic and nice
Also for those that didn’t know. If you connect a controller to your phone and play true skate the controls are the same as the new game on pc. These controls have been around for a few years I think but only if you connect a controller instead of using your finger.
its not the same, they have changed it to work better on the pc version
@@kpmaxo was about to say this the pc version looks more speaking to this day I still confuse myself with the phone controller set up
Woah I’ve played true skate for over 4 years now and never knew it had controller support
The controls are basically left-foot right-foot, you just have to hold triggers to activate each leg because the triggers also control stuff like catches. You can chose to catch front foot, back foot, or both feet.
I'm loving the resurgence in skateboarding games...I'm 37 and this brings me back to my buddies basement playing Tony Hawk, and then grabbing our boards to go skate Downtown Boston in 2004. .....I'm getting old. I still play True Skate to this day, on my tablet, Can't wait to try this version!
i honestly hope it gets better further on into development and maybe even have a controller change of input if they choose to make it that way tbh hoping for the best like i hoped for session
I agree with the controls aspect. I heard nightspeeds say that the trick input to output was extremely responsive which is awesome to hear . I said this on nightspeeds video as well but my biggest thing for skateboarding games is body movement, a good skateboarder has finesse. A beginner skateboarder is clumsy , arms flailing in the air , uncomfortable foot to board positioning. All these things are a big deal in skateboarding, you can do the hardest tricks but that doesn't mean your considered a good skateboarder. I personally would just like to see more stylish body movements which is what session lacks, also the screen moving with the trick kind of hurts my brain lol. All that being said I think they are doing a great job, thanks true skate for giving everyone another fun skateboarding game. 🙌🤙👊🔥
Pretty sure doing the hardest tricks makes you the best skater
I love it. Bought Session and SkaterXL. Thanks for putting this on my radar.
One question: will freestyle tricks be in it? I was you landing darkslides unintentionally. Are caspers/primos/truckstands in?
It feels like they're either stuck in the touch screen control mindset and/or making their control scheme as legally distinct from what came before without consideration for why the dual stick layout, the flickit system, or the THPS control scheme worked in the first place. The fliptricks make sense in a vacuum, but when you add the weird way spins are handled, the fact that session markers don't use up and down for return and set respectively, the way pushing is handled, etc. it just falls apart. You called this out in your own words, but it's like they have one foot in skate sim and the other firmly planted in how their phone game played, and for the game to be successful, they need to accept that this is NOT a phone game anymore. I'm not at all suggesting they go with the same control layouts that came before, i'm just saying more thought needs to go into balancing realistic movements and playability.
That, on top of lifeless and glitchy skater animations makes it feel like they just took the True Skate Big Screen tech demo and put a new UI over it. It (still?) looks like a 2017 kickstarter project. For me, player animations are a HUGE part of the feel, and it's a big reason why i get on with Session as opposed to Skater XL. SkaterXL's set-up animation is far snappier and stilted than the rest of the animations in the game, giving every trick a weird stop-start feel. Session, on the other hand, just has stilted animations all around and thus the game feels more cohesive. This game, the board moves much more freely than the skater and it give the game the feeling of playing the board, not the skater (kinda like the mobile game), and that would be fine if this was a pure physics simulation, but because it's meant to simulate the actions of a person, feeling like you're controlling the board feels wrong
Totally agree. This looks like super early builds of skater xl without really fixing any of the issues with that game. Session is probably the best skate sim rn but even that game has a lot of things that bug me. That’s why I find myself still reaching for skate 3 more often than the others, it’s just more polished and well rounded, despite it having less realistic controls.
This looks amazing so far. I agree with what you're saying, controls need work. I think for this game to differ from the others is to use an open world map (Doesn't need amazing graphics) where you can find your own skate spots. I'm definitely gonna pick this up either way, but yeah... this looks good!
Respect to Garrett for consistently reiterating that the controls need to be changed
looks like they just added a person into the mobile game and called it a day 😂
finally, a game where I can dragonflip back tail late 360 inward heel out!!!
That's so dope! I was playing True Skate back when the app first came out, so good to see they got the game out now.
Man just did kick flips and heels the whole video. I would’ve loved to see you explore the other tricks in the game and see what you can do.
the potential this has is great. ive been having fun with it for sure. with no xl updates and session just not being fun at all, i can safely say this game is my new favorite sandbox. trying to get certain things in this game just has me glued to it. i cant put the game down as of now.
Session not being fun at all? Session is the best thing ever since Thrasher Skate & Destroy back in PS1 days lmao. To each their own i guess.
@@almightyIrie session was ok to play when I didn't have XL but currently it just isn't fun.
I picked it up after your stream and I've been messing around in it for nearly 6 hours and on the controls, I think they could work better with refining, like the way rotations work is jank, pushing is kinda unresponsive or clunky, like lots of little things that could be improved, I don't wanna give up on the controls yet, they are super unique, as far from ea skate that i'v seen yet.
You def need to be able to get off your board!!
I like the concept there going for. Not to big on the controls but definitely see potential in this game. 🔥vid to bro
I like the raw losse type of skating but it needs more focus on controls
The front foot back foot controls are really weird, however the rotation and 180 s work just like in the app. It seems like they made a copy of it and attempted to bind the controls to a controller which is still cool. But I would guess this is just a first iteration and there's more optimizations for the controller mapping in the future. I'm excited because I love true skate mobile. I love the controls on mobile and if it's right for PC it might be my favorite skate game
Personally I feel the graphics are fine as is. Obviously enhance them but its def not the primary focus. Animations need smoothing and options for session/ skater xl controls would be my primary focus.
If it used animations and Session/SkaterXL controls then it'd be a different game
wow mr.ginner always stays posted on all the lasted skateboarding video game news and etc. props~ and ur good at skateboarding irl . :) keep skating.
Was so cool to see you in the beginning, mind blowing, like some kinda another goal idk 👏👏👏 feels cool, glad for you
Maybe after you pop the camera doesn’t follow when you spin, but when you are on the ground it does… if that even makes sense.
Controls seem fun but haven’t tried yet
I like the controls tbh but you have a good point
im not mad that theres more skate sims coming into development but i cant see this coming close to session or skater xl, the controls and just small things like having the speed displayed on the hud just scream that the dev team arent in tune to what the skate sim community want
Looks really good for early access/promising for sure the only thing that looks really odd to me is the 180s I don’t think the camera should rotate with the skater, it’s trying to mimic 1st person.
its so cool to see this game making it to pc, I rememer playing non stop for weeks farming coins so I could change the deck graphics lmao
Hop back on it, you can use mods now!
The game is playable, however, the controls do not feel intuitive at all.
In order to crouch, you have to use either left or right trigger to prepare for a flip trick. This feels excessive and unnecessary as multiple games now have provided the exact same effect, with a down/up press of a stick, then scooping/releasing that stick to get the effect true skate has for crouching then flicking down. They managed to provide the same effect, with half the required buttons.
The rotation is horrible as you need to hold a button to prepare for spinning, then your spin is tied to your shuv input. This method makes it overly complicating to do any shuv rotation and body rotation combos. This is not to say they are impossible, only that they are overly complicated. Again, as multiple games have done, a secondary body rotation axis input has proven to work well.
The lack of option for switching inputs with stance makes anything switch feel just awkward. The game currently uses back foot and front foot inputs where left stick is front foot, and right stick is back foot. For myself, this does not feel like simulating real life skateboarding. As I've been skating for 20+ years myself, when I skate switch, my mind looks at switch stance as a mirrored version of regular stance. I also know people who understand switch to be riding backwards. In either scenario, left foot is still left foot, and right foot is right foot. To me, the idea of left stick being left foot and right stick being right foot makes perfect sense. The major difference between the other twin stick skating games is that one switches X and Y axis directions with stance change, the other does not. These two methods replicate the two mentalities of switch being mirrored regular (x and y axis inversion), and riding backwards (no x and y axis inversion).
True skate only inverts it's X axis and maintains the same Y input for both stances. This only changes flip and scoop directions, not the foot they control. For me, this does not fit well with simulating real skating.
I do however love the balance system for manuals. This is the only game I've seen as of now that has implemented input of the manual and it's balance to be tied together. The only part of the manual i dislike is using the trigger to initiate it. As with popping input, this part could be completely left out as other games have proven and remove necessity of an extra button.
The triggers are also used for catching. I understand that catching the board is a realistic scenario and for a simulator to not include it would be undermining the reality of skating. The issue I have is the orientation of doing spin tricks and catching. Because of multiple outside stimuli, while rotating the player and catching, I haven't understood which trigger catches with which foot. This is mostly due to being disoriented when the camera rotates with the player. The other problem is my own lack of ability to comprehend if i'm going forward or backward at the time of catching, so I'm not sure if left trigger is catching with the front foot, or if it's catching with the same foot that started as front, regardless of the current orientation. I would say currently that this catching issue is mainly a problem with the camera rotation. If the player rotation during spins were independent of the camera rotation, I would expect the current control scheme to catch with the front foot using the left trigger. This again would be an issue for me due to the lack of stance change and the left/right triggers not being correlated to left/right foot.
The current flip/scoop inputs are widely inconsistent in my opinion. What feels like similar flicks/scoops results in a large variety of different flip/scoop speeds and direction. This is also extremely affected by board changes. Where I could do a 360 flip on flat ground with just about any skateboard I ride in real life, the majority of the boards in game do not flip or spin fast enough to do this successfully, and the ones that do move fast enough overly rotate/flip by extreme degrees. The variation and inconsistency is too vast and needs some work to be manageable with a controller.
The grabs I barely used because the inputs are just awkward. Removing control of my foot to grab the board negates the actual control of the board I need to maintain with my foot while skating in real life.
Overall, I'm displeased with the current state of the game and feel a lack of effort toward the simulation of the skating, and a much larger effort to simulate touch screen inputs rather than skateboarding movements.
I feel this game has a lot of potential, but personally, I'll be discontinuing to play this until I hear that it has received a large input overhaul. I will then attempt to give it another opportunity to prove to be the great game I feel it could be.
This is how you give proper feedback. Thanks for typing that all out, and I pretty much completely agree with everything you said
so no batb invite?
Glad i'm not the only one who wrote an essay of feedback, although yours is far more well thought out than mine
@@GarrettGinnerGaming I also posted this in the reviews on steam. The game has potential... but rn i have 0 interest in playing and it's the controls that are my problem
@@RubyRoks My background is in game design, I try to provide feedback with a developer mindset.
Yeah, the controls are crazy. I like the pushing with the stick idea but it needs to have xl controls
The white outline that appears on top of the board when you do tricks interfiers a little too much, the opacity should be changed to not block the view as much, promissing game and a good change in the market
I’m really hoping this game branches off and they add foot plants, Caspers, late tricks, impossibles/pressure tricks and better animations than it honestly could be better than session.
I remember when true skate originally announced that controller support would be added i was extremely exited but the actual controls were so dog shit that i never even bothered to learn them. so far it seems the pc game is a literal port with a few graphical upgrades and a few features removed but this is definately exiting
Also I know that it’s supposed to be a simulator- extremely difficult. But I feel there should be assist depending on what you’re doing. Wall rides and stuff for ex
The controller is the only issue. I got it on my shopping cart to buy it in a few days. Also if you can link it to the mobile app and remote play it, it will be supper kool.
This looks dope! love the realism! The camera turning with the skater when you spin looks weird, you just lose focus for a second as you do the trick, not good for spotting your landing. Controls seem pretty good, i imagine with a bit of time you would get comfortable with them. 100% would play an early release, need a PC first though 😂
I was getting dizzy while watching you try back 360s and front 360s. The camera following the player on the rotation... Im not sure if that's the play
All the things about every trick looks different because of physics-based animations is basically the main feature about Skater XL, especially in comparison to Session. TrueSkate is defintely not the first game to do this. In SXL I catch the tricks myself and can flick and shove the board as hard as I want and it will never look the same. Of course this is only possible on PC with Dawg's XXLMod :D
the camera also should turn so forcefully when you do 180´s or 360´s tbh thats the only two things i have a issue with: controls and forced camera turn (edit 3 issues) because YOU cant walk this is supposed to be a skateboard simulator so you should be able to walk to skate spots! also THE DAMN game should NOT have boards with different stats but have customizable stats for the skater itself because it doesnt make sense to have boards that ollie higher or are faster etc. i just see too much of the mobile game in this and it should not feel/look like a mobile game when they try to have it be the "most realistic" skateboarding "simulator"
What I like most is actually the camera rotating with the character. Feels more "realistic", as in real-life you'd also look back for certain tricks, not knowing where you're heading.
What needs to be fixed is the animations. They look just way too clunky...
Otherwise looking forward to the game!
As someone who plays mobile true skate. I see this as an absolute win
Spins seem weird until you realize that's how they are in real life
5 years later and it still looks like it did in the teaser..
Been on this game for mobile for like 9 years. Lowkey the mobile controls are so buttery
This looks great, I'm more interested in this already than xl, but the controls look very awkward being used to session now something similar would go a long way
I still cannot believe it is out. Thought it wasn’t gonna happen.
I think a lot of people completely forgot that Skater XL was originally a mobile game until Easy Day just straight up abandoned it.
Voice changer was a nice touch
Assuming the game will eventually get left foot/right foot this game's control scheme will potentially be even more realistic than SESSION's approach. Kudos to them for trying something new and what feels like the next step in the evolution of skate sim controls. Will they feel as good or better, will they be fun to play with for a longer period of time? We'll see. Color me intrigued.
(and people say SESSION'S controls are to complicated, lmfao)
Game looks wonky for now but it has HUGE potential. I love the fully physics based stuff
physics look wonky and floaty... but yea potential is massive.
1000% agree with the controls comment
Skater XL and Session use animations? I thought their whole thing was physics
they should make two types of control the session and the original one
I think the game is at an amazing place rn for early access, the only thing I hate is that the camera moves and looks so weird when you do 180/360 tricks. If you can turn that off in the setting the game would be awesome.
"amazing"
Can you play it with keyboard and mouse?
This is dope
yeah man.. i hope they will change the controls
I am happy to see you in the game it is amazing
It definitely needs some updated controls but it makes me mad when people say it looks like an iPhone game because it literally has been for years
I disagree about the controls. As soon as they change the controls to mimic Skate or Session or XL or whatever, everyone will know how to skate right off the bat. Everyone will be able to pull that 7 stair rail instead of having to learn it from scratch. I'm not a fan of changing the controls and I think it will make everyone a pro overnight. The people who practice practice practice will be lauded when they pull off great tricks. But if everyone can snap into a 7 stair rail on the first day, it becomes just another me-too game.
As for turning while on the board, I agree, we need to be able to do that. I can't get into a perfect 90 degree angle to slide. It's frustrating.
True skate on mobile is crazy good especially on realistic mode
skater xl, with these physics would be so cool
Looks like hot shit. Can’t wait to see the progress though I’m always down for a new skateboarding game. I wish it didn’t take ten years for the industry to pick back up on the genre.
Do they have an option where you can just turn off the character model and have the gameplay look like the mobile app? And, finger crossed for a console release. 🤞
I actually wish all skating games had that kind of fingerboarding option, just the board and no character
the do have a mode like that yes
Been playing true skate on mobile for over 7 years so I'm gonna give it a chance on PC 👍
Bro nightspeeds is amazing at the game he makes it look like session
This is so ambitious and I can't figure out the market for this game, because at some point the sim aspect gets too much in the way of the instinctive skateboarding feeling. There needs to be a balance which is definitely not this. I think with the controls they're addressing something core to skateboarding which is the foot positioning before performing a trick, I see where they're coming from, and you can get used to it. But requiring way too much brain power to even do a good kickflip out of 10 tries, that's taking the simulator thing a bit too far. Session is a nice balance, it just needs a lot more work.
I never got used to the touch controls in true skate, but I loved that it was just soo fluid and precise. easy to understand, but very difficult to get the hang of. With this being on pc now I can finally give this game another try since my phone is really bad.
The funny thing is the PC port completely loses that instinctive and "true" feeling that they have on mobile. They could invent a skateboard-shaped controller where... ah no, that already flopped in the Tony Hawk era... 😂
@@axel.lessio you could probably add skater xl to that as well then. I have yet to play true skate pc so I refuse to give an opinion until then.
kinda looks like the big picture they showed like 5 years ago. I think I'll hold off for now to see the first update to see if its not a cash grab.
The controls need work yes I think that’ll be an option regardless when they do a full release, but I think the camera shouldn’t rotate with you when you do 180 or 3 tricks it’s so disorienting
I really like the sound of the controls, make more sense than turning with the triggers and pushing with the stick is way more immersive than pressing a button
the camera turning with you isn't the one
I personally think Skate 2 had the best controls and its the best blue print
This game doesn’t look like a sim game at all lol
Why didn’t they just link with session to make a better game . All these separate companies need to come together and make the ultimate skate game
All of his points were valid
Seems like it can def be something special if they make it Lf/Rf controls.
I love the difficulty and variations of outcomes, it’s just hella choppy. Not released but that shits a big issue EVERY- TIME.
Looks promising! The controls are a definate no at the moment for me. As someone that bounces from Skater XL and Sesson, those two being very similar already gets me in a muddle to remember certain tricks so for this to be completely different... it's just too much for me and will require so much brain training each time I play a different game.
Really cool
I have the game on my phone for 4 years and that's aosome that they put it on pc
No way they made it a pc and console game😲
I’ve been waiting for this
I feel like it will be hard to replicate the feel of skating on pc as well as they did in the mobile game. you’re literally using your fingers as feet on the mobile game so it’s just so intuitive. There are zero limitations to what you can do in the mobile game and I don’t know how they’ll replicate it with a controller. On mobile you can tweak the board, you can even do grind transfers and manage to finger flip grabs. I know it isn’t your speed but you should try the mobile game for a reference it might help you learn to play the pc game faster 🤷♂️
wait, so can i play it on keyboard?
Bro i play true skate everyday since i got it in 2015-2016
So if you do the input incorrectly you turn into a spaghetti creature hmm
Play sims to play those specific types of games. Sometimes you wanna skate, sometimes it’s survival mode. Be like that lol.
This game looks smoov
need yo connect to phone for controls
it has potential in the way putting a baby on a skateboard has potential. So far this looks not very good for the skating aspect of it. Seems like a cash grab to me and releasing these unfinished games is a big problem these days.
I bet you make your voice deeper irl even tho you use the voice changer
Don’t expose me
I would do the same😂
physics don't look realistic to me... they appear rather floaty and somewhat wonky, but i still dig the idea.. will keep an eye on this, but 100% stick to Session for now.
to bbe fair this game started with no player and swipe controls and it has better vert skating then any new skateboarding game out right this moment true skate has always been sick on mobile
like it was closest to virtual finger boarding
fun fact apple isnt the only company out there
