As Don Cherry said on his interview with Bob McCown on Prime Time Sports "the television personalities outlast the executives." Hodge is still one of the best!
This incident actually was a catalyst on how live sports broadcasting worked at the CBC. It got the attention of the leagues and probably helped, to an extent, the development of tsn, and other channels to get a chance at broadcasting games.
Dave Hodge always > Ron McLean. I never have warmed up to Ron McLean from Day 1 he worked on CBC. CBC HNIC only survived well years after Dave Hodge's firing because of Don Cherry .
@@BBQFanNo1 Since this isn't CBC's own channel and likelihood of being censored is low, I will say I never liked Ron. He looked, acted and spoke like a bitch. I'm sure a lot of viewers were hoping Don would give him a wedgey on air and slap him good when he delivered one of his snarky remarks towards Don.
I remember that broadcast. After he did this bit I just kind of blinked at the screen and thought, "Did he just dis his boss live on the air?" Hodge was always so smooth and professional - never saw any hint of that coming. I was sad to see him leave HNIC as a result.
+David Jorgensen As a kid I loved watching him and didn't understand him being gone. Maybe it was because we were taught everyone is human and gets angry. Now after years of working in toxic environments I feel there must have been more going on that week or maybe month.
He said it's cause earlier in the day CBC cut short the curling he was watching and that pissed him off, so when it happened at work later that night it was still fresh in his mind and he was trying to sympathize with the viewers. There's an interview on youtube where he talks about it.
i seen it coming, david. as i recall, it started days before when hodge expressed similar concerns about the way the playoff broadcasts were being handled. when i see the `pen flip` i clearly remember thinking `he is finished`. i will say though that his reactions were entirely indicative of the way most of us were feeling that night.
david, if you remember, the night before he made a similar snide remark about the network and its coverage and if i do recall, i remember thinking that after that broadcast and his pen flip, that his time was very likely coming to an end. hodge`s remarks were completely in line with what most viewers were thinking that night and most of us were frustrated to the point of being enraged with what had happened.
so sad what Dave Hodge left CBC and open his place for Cherry. Respect to Dave Hodge from old hockey fan from Russia! I have many HNIC and other games in my dvd collection from 50's - 80's and see now games wich never can see in USSR but all time wanted it since 1976. I'm an old habs fan since 31.12.1975
I think that Habs-Flyers game ended in a tie. It's funny to think back to the days before 24 hour sports channels and internet. It took a minor effort to actually find out the score of a game you were interested in, by tuning in to AM radio 11 o clock news or waiting to check the paper the next day.
@JBatts41 Apparently this was the second time in the same day this happened with CBC regarding sports coverage. Earlier in the day, the network decided to cut away from the final end of a Brier curling match to go to coverage of an NDP convention.
I remember as a young kid watching this live. My folks said to me "Well, that will be the end of him on HNIC." We had a good laugh though. I think Dave Hodge was expressing the same frustrations that the views were as well. Good for him!
We have Dave to thank for that. The policy was changed soon after that, if I remember correctly. I watched this and other games where OT was not shown so the National could be on at 11! Good job Dave, a trailblazer for sure.
I remember this game and was also disappointed like Dave. Dave Hodge was great as was Ron MacLean (as host) but everything has gone downhill since Sportsnet took over. Very sad.
Quite sure this was long before Sportsnet took over. CBC has been going downhill for a long time, which is why they didn't even own the HNIC song. Of course, when you're a government subsidized, that is not a surprise.
Dave Hodge scores a hat trick...we are not able to go there😳...that's the way we do things here🙄....we will try to find out more why we do things this way here.😞...you could sense his frustration but good for him...The Truth was told😀💪👷
March 14, 1987-35 yrs. ago tonight. A little context to the broadcast-HNIC back then began at 8pm. No pregame, no doubleheader (that began when the 94/95 lockout ended). Toronto played Calgary at MLG, while Montreal hosted Philadelphia. I live in Detroit, so we got the Ontario feed (Tor/Cal). The Leafs beat the Flames 6-4, and the game ended early (HNIC had an 8pm-11pm window). The network decided to go to the finish of the Canadiens/Flyers game (which was tied at 3), to finish out their timeslot. When the 3rd period ended (there were only a few minutes left when they switched), they went to commercial. It was just a few minutes to 11pm(CBC News) when they came back to Dave Hodge. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing the people who saw the entire Habs/Flyers game didn't miss the OT (Quebec/New Foundland/Maritimes). I personally wasn't happy not being able to see the OT, but it really wasn't a "Heidi" moment. The network was just trying to fill some time, and unfortunately for them OT occurred. When Hodge flipped his pen, I laughed to myself. I was bummed when he got fired, and would've liked his perspective when the Habs and Flyers had their pregame "Pier 6" brawl 2 months later at the Forum.
yes that would be a good question to find out, obviously someone in charge who never worked in the actual related job. Just like so many other departments. Hire somebody from outside to manage. It gets better every day with idiots in management
CBC wanted to get to The National (then-anchored by the late Knowlton Nash) as soon as possible, and I bet Hodge let out a torrent of expletives right after they faded to black.
i still remember watching this that night with my Dad...he turned to me as he was laughing and said "Amatuer Night in Canada, Hodge is probably gonna get fired"
CBC used to pull that crap all the time back then. But, network television was a lot different and they had to go to their local affiliate stations after the game for news and whatever. Nicely done, Dave.
That’s right, and usually Don Cherry and Dave Hodge got along. When they disagreed, they were civil and smiling but not backing down. Ron McLean is a little bleeding heart wimp compared to Dave Hodge.
The only good thing about CBC was HNIC and back when they would show Blue Jays games. Other than that, there is nowhere near anything you could quality of programming on CBC.
Considering how little the NHL was paid by the CBC. its a wonder they ever had broadcast rights at all. They were bringing in 2 billion a year on HNIC while the Canadian markets were borderline going out of business and 2 ended up moving. (Edmonton and Calgary just barely survived that era.) Their nonchalant attitude towards broadcasting games, especially playoff games, was shameful. Definitely a "tradition" that didn't deserve to continue.
