  • so I felt the need to address this subject, mental well-being is so important to me and seeing Eugenia not promoting recovery makes me very worried. I have made mistakes in the past, with my videos, so yes there is a little hypocrisy, however, I feel like I've documented my growth and learnt a lot of lessons through my mistakes. Please do not give Eugenia any hate or anything - she is poorly. But the lines of being ill and almost glamourising an ED is definitely blurred.. what do you think?

She’s actually said that if she ever did have to go to a doctor that she wouldn’t talk about it online because it is her business she’s literally the nicest person ever and has never made ANY inflammatory or offensive or triggering comments about eating or her weight. I completely agree that there is an issue and that she is unhealthy but I don’t think that nessicarily means she is forced to address it- I think that obsessing over her and her weight is only increasing the problem

Marie, I am SO happy you've talked about this. I've been following her story for years, and it has to stop. The issue lies with people forgiving her actions WAY too easily. She is a fully grown woman, almost in her thirties. She is accountable for what she posts and how people perceive it. She admitted she had an issue after rehab, but that was because she HAD to. Now? She denies there's an issue, she talks about how rehab was traumatising and overall sheds an AWFUL light on ED recovery. Any time her fans bring up their concern for her overall well-being, she denies any issues and downplays the severity by blaming her fans for 'thinking there's an issue' - major issues there. Victim blaming when everyone can see she is dying. She accuses concerns as 'hate'. Just an overall mess. Her family also enable her, it takes about 10 minutes of research to understand how severe the situation is, how much her family play a part on it and how ignorant Eugenia is. She likes to play this persona that she's harmless and kind - but that isn't the truth, there is much more to it.
You are NOT wrong at all for this video, so many people have been thinking and feeling this - just a lot of us are silent as we've been trying for years.
I truly wish the best for Eugenia, I really do. It's hard to help someone who won't accept help but I truly do believe in her.
Honestly, thank you so much for this. The more that people hear about it, the more we can try and safe-guard others from this mess.

The biggest difference between you and Eugenia is this: you are open about your scars, mental health, etc., but you continuously make your videos relatable and sort of recovery with others if that makes sense (I was able to telly mom about my scars after I watched your videos a while back talking about when you told your family members); Eugenia on the other hand, like you said, unconsciously glamorizes being extremely ill and is honestly very damaging to anyone who is in any way uncomfortable with their body. While you are open about mental health, Eugenia continues to deny that she has a problem and is just "that skinny" and she says that in every video. I'm sure she is a very kind and well-meaning person, and perhaps she doesn't think her problem is not that bad, but it is far more harmful to especially the younger audience to see someone is deadly thin and denying a problem, rather than someone like you who shows how you are recovering with your scars out.

A part of me feels bad for saying that her posts should be flagged or taken down. I completely understand why (as I am a person with an eating disorder), but I feel bad for her because it’s basically like saying that she’s sick and has an illness therefore she shouldn’t be allowed to ever show her body. Like the fact that she’s sick doesn’t mean she should cover up and hide and isolate herself until she looks physically better for the comfort of other people. I completely understand that it is triggering so I get it. but I just feel bad for her and hope she gets better.

@@Runner-Boy Indeed, she is entitled to keep her private life private. The problem is she is a public figure with millions of followers who either worry about her wellbeing, or thing it is normal to be as frail as she is (I think we can both agree it is most certainly not). I am not hating on her if that is the impression you got from my comment, but I am simply bringing up the point that her constant denial that she may have a problem - despite others worrying about her health - is damaging to her viewers.

The fact that her accounts are still not marked with a warning, especially on Instagram, is something I really don't get. There are wayy smaller accounts than hers and sometimes every little scar gets flagged or deleted. It makes no sense to me that an account like hers, that is not just a bit glorifying, and so huge, is still uncensored. I really hope she can get better some day.
Wish you all the best Marie, I can definitely agree with everything you said and I hope you have a wonderful day!✨

Before I say this I want to stress that I am in no way talking about you here.
But in my eyes what people are doing is body shaming. She would be glorifying if she publicly acknowledged her problem but she isn’t, she’s in denial and people are saying that because she is so thin, she shouldn’t be allowed to post. They wouldn’t at that to an overweight person, that would be body shaming.

@@kdazzle3048 Yes I agree with you! My issue is that a lot of other accounts *do* get censored. Like there is no system behind it. What I criticize is the inequality in that case, because her account is so huge and a lot of people complain. Still, nothing gets censored, like it happens for example on accounts, that are pro-recovery and less "toxic". It's just not fair, everybody should have the right to present themselves freely, that is very true. I really appreciate the time you put in your comment and I think exactly the same. :)

Eugenia Cooney has built a community that supports her behavior, so for every 10 negative comments, all she hears is the one that says “don’t listen to them” and she says “I know, right”....because of this, I am afraid she is beyond hope

    • @No-ps2zf
      @No-ps2zf 3 роки тому

I think it's the exact opposite, she feeds on the "negative" comments. What fuels her is seeing people asking themselves how does she do that. I speak as a person who has been in a very similar situation as a teenager and as a young adult. There's something in the fear and horror that you see in people's eyes when they look at you... It's what keeps you going.
Her supportive community is more of a collateral effect, in my opinion.

Eugenia is effectively encouraging eating disorders because ill people will aspire to look like her, which is fueling people to get worse and aim to look like someone who is dying. Healed scars are still shocking, maybe just as shocking as Eugenia's post and some people can be triggered by them, but I think if people are triggered by healed scars that's their responsibility not the person with scars. Its different with Eugenia because as you said she's actively ill and not trying to do anything about it. Can't believe Instagram sensors healed scars but not an graphic image of someone dying from anorexia. Her saying she's not underweight or ill will make other people in the same situation think they're not ill either. The public has made her rich for being shockingly underweight... so wrong :/// she will be dead before she gets chance to spend the money and enjoy the fame. It's kinda like Trisha paytas, becoming famous by being controversial and rude, because it gets people really opinionated which equals more views.

    • @Icekat11
      @Icekat11 3 роки тому

Young people who are triggered by healed scars may think it’s socially acceptable to have SH scars. They may not realize the real life struggle and consequences of trying to work and live in a society that (sadly) does not accept the scars. I don’t agree that creators with EDs are responsible for triggering others when creators with SH scars are not. (I don’t think either groups should have to bear that responsibility).
If a viewer is triggered by EC, it will likely take years to reach such a dangerously low weight. If a person is triggered by SH scars, the consequences can be immediate and cause permanent damage/social stigma.
I think we should work towards destigmatizing mental illness. I wish EC would be as open as Marie and work towards recovery, but I do not think she should be censored or shamed for displaying a body that is a product of mental illness. (I know tone is lost in comments. Please know that I’m just trying to share a different perspective and don’t intend to be confrontational or judgmental in any way).

I really do agree with what you are saying! There comes a point when you shouldn’t be sharing certain pictures, there does come a point where it is your responsibility to make sure you are not putting out something that may trigger other people, I get that other peoples triggers are not anyone else’s responsibility but sometimes you need to take responsibility that something you are posting is not okay to post. As you said, If someone was recovering then it would be totally different as it shows how much they are growing as a person and it shows that they are trying and also helps motivate other people to recover. Showing healed scars is not the same as someone posting pictures of them being underweight when they are not actively trying to recover. There are so many young people seeing this and wanting to be like her, and thinking that she has an amazing life and that they should look like her. She does seem like such a lovely person but a influencer I think she needs to take a little responsibility and think about what she is posting a little more. I do think it’s for validation that she posts pictures like them, more than when someone posts pictures of scars that are healed and that show growth.
Also I don’t know why anyone would send pictures of fresh self harm to anyone!! Do they not realise it will be triggering! 💕

Thank you for speaking up about this. I think it's a sensitive topic because no one wants to say to a young woman that her body itself is "wrong" or "triggering", but you're completely right, she never addresses struggling with an ED and she's posting these photos like they aren't extremely shocking. She's pretending everything's okay so her followers who don't know any better are gaslit in a way. I am struggling with an ED right now and personally I don't post my body on social media because I know I'm not healthy and I could trigger someone, it blows my mind that she would post these photos for hundreds of thousands of people to see. She might not realize it but she's triggering people and normalizing this dangerously skinny aesthetic at the same time.

Last thing I allowed myself to see was her in a green outfit. I removed myself as an adult because I became so desensitised to how she looked that I started questioning my own body and I seriously could not always see that she wasn't of a healthy look because I became so used to it. And I don't have an Ed, so that's made me realise just how awful it is for those with triggers and EDs or connections to them. ❤️Secondly I believe if you are really not in a recovery state or at all well you should not be living online. Both Eugenia and EducatingShanny both showed lack of growth and very cyclical behaviour and with ES a lot of negative updates and although it's fine to share there becomes a point where you are not helping yourself or anyone else and you are not focusing on your actual self and recovery because you get so lost online and the validation of others voices not your own.

I'm actually so so happy someone is talking about this. I agree with everything you said.
This may sound horrible but I find it really hard to have sympathy for her. I used to worry about her, I never really watched her but I knew she existed and was really unhealthy and I wanted her to get help and I wasn't the only one. But after years and years of people begging her to get help, she hasn't. I understand it's hard and I myself have denied help in the past with my mental health so I really do understand. But for how long can you beg and worry? The first step to recovery is recognising you need help and she doesn't see that and if she does, she ignores it. There isn't anything anyone can do to help at this point.
Her eating disorder is feeding off of all the comments. Mental illness is competitive and especially eating disorerds. A few weeks ago my eating problems started to creep in and the first thing that came to my head was her. This alone shows that people will get triggered and use her body as a visual goal for their disorder. But something that really got me was that she was doing videos related to winter such as hauls but instead of the expected jumpers she wore shorts and skirts and crop tops... I was in the comments and agreed that she was doing that as validation. It was her eating disorder that wanted someone to say how skinny she is to motivate her to keep going. This is genuinely heartbreaking and shows just how horrible eating disorders are. But at the same time, she knows this. By now she knows how her brain works and even if not others have told her. So she's ignoring that and not only is it dangerous for her because it fuels the disorder but it also encourages others who are struggling.
The people that watch her videos do it either to motivate their eating disorder or simply want to see when she dies because that is the direction she is heading in. She isn't promoting recovery, she doesn't even address the concerns and some could argue that she doesn't want her Internet life to only talk about mental health and that's fair enough, but being that ill she would have to address it and say she's getting help and doing OK now. People genuinely worry about her. She ignores comments like that and pretends everything is fine. She becomes more and more unhealthy with each day.
Scars are not the same as this. Wearing whatever you want and living life is different from being extremely ill, refusing to get help and fueling other people's disorders. Fresh self harm would be unacceptable because it triggers others and fuels the individual who's already struggling. But scars are the past and promote recovery. There is a huge difference.
And I don't think Eugenia is a bad person. She seems genuine and really sweet but her disorder is taking over. She should take a break from the internet for awhile and seek help. Her being online is fueling her own disorder and it encourages others.
That's my opinion and some may disagree which is fine. But that's how I feel about this especially after battling with my own eating problems for years and even now I'm still not completely recovered. Thank you, Marie for talking about this, it makes me happy that people care about this topic. 💗

I’m sure many people watch EC for the reasons you mentioned, but there are many other reasons people watch her content. I watch EC because her positivity helps me with my own struggles (I understand that people will say it’s toxic positivity or fake).
The fact that someone displays healed scars, does not necessarily promote recovery or only suggest past SH behavior. Many people engage in active SH in locations on their bodies that are separate from the locations that display “past” SH scars. The healed SH scars can still be very triggering.
I’m not trying to imply that it’s unacceptable for people with SH scars to dress how they feel comfortable. I’m just pointing out that content can mean different things to viewers and can trigger people in different ways.

well done and thank you for speaking out about this topic, marie. i know a lot of people spoke about it around the time her documentary thing with shane dawson came out, but it seems to have died down since then, and her posting has only gotten worse. i’m not sure what her intentions are from posting, or if she is even the one in control of her social media, but it is seriously harmful. i completely agree, of course celebrate and show your recovering body, but the problem is that this is not what she is trying to do. and yes the same thing goes with healed scars vs fresh wounds, they are completely different things. i’ve found the best thing for me personally is to just completely block her social media. again, thanks for speaking out, i hope people are nice with their comments! 💗💗

Marie, based on your comments I was intrigued by this story of Eugenia. She is not well, clearly.
She is desperately ill, and plays out her illness in a dress up mode. That beach image tore at my heart, as did all of her photos.
She is almost child like in a costume. Where are her helpers. her family. All the photos are beyond sharing her illness and her recovery, they ARE her illness. I can't follow her. Much love and wisdom. I get it.💕💕

  • @melissaconway4385

I think in this situation, you were right. I think Eugenia is well aware that her following comes from people who are concerned or upset or even triggered about her illness and posts to fuel that conversation. She's obviously very ill, but she doesn't do anything to promote recovery and if anything, she posts to get a reaction out of people. It's hard to blame her when you understand how the mind can work when you have an ED, but it's also upsetting to know that she knowingly posts things or says things she knows will upset or even trigger people just for the sake of maintaining her following. Like you said, people give you more attention when you're ill then when you're recovered, and I think she knows that. It's extremely sad, but it's true. I hope she recovers and gets the help she clearly needs.

i 100 percent understand and agree with your perspective. Like you said showing HEALED self harm is liberating, it's actively deciding to move on and break the cycle instead of letting scars rope you into a cycle of negative views on yourself and therefore worse mental health. its not letting past behaviours hold you back from recovery. Forcing yourself to hide a part of you that you cant change, that is in the past, would be mental torture and depravity of leading an improved life.
i was constantly on edge when i forced myself to hide my scars and be ashamed of what i HAD (past tense) been through, and if i had carried on that way, hiding, i doubt i would've ever recovered to a healthier and more free mindset.
Unfortunately, what Eugenia has done, weather intentional or not, is advocating for non recovered on-going mental health, in fact, denying any poor mental health at all. So what when an impressionable young person sees those posts and is either in a similar situation to her already or decides they want to be like her thinks the same, thinks "if Eugenia isnt poorly, i am not poorly either" then they will never seek help or get better.
And while of course it isn't their responsibility to take accountability for everyone's mental health when online, there is a fine line.
With that much power, that much of an audience- pretending everything is fine is detrimental not only to herself bless her, but others too.
What you do helps people, including me, move on, break the cycle, ADMIT (not deny) that that behaviour isnt healthy while also not letting it stop you from doing better, to stop living in shame for something you cant change.
thankyou for the movements you have made in the mental health community, and sorry your movements were even put into question.

Honestly, I've watched Eugenia since 2014. I've always been really concerned for her. Its like watching a train wreck, i cant stop. I would check on her every now and then but recently, i have been watching a lot more of her... Been watching highlights from her streams and ugh.. It is starting to kinda effect me i think? I struggle off and on with eating, sometimes its binging and sometimes its under eating. Currently, I've lost about 20lbs which is the most in a long time and im starting to think that eugenia has an influence on that. Im just so concerned and kinda amazed how she is still here. I dont know i care about her but im also angry at her for the constant denial and deflecting. I want her to get better but i honestly think she would rather die as skinny as possible than gain the weight she needs to be healthy...

Unpopular opinion and just my opinion but at first Eugenia could have been 'naïve' to her impact and illness but now she knows, she even mentioned triggering people in the return, she now knows the damage she is doing to herself and others, there is no shame in illness but if you know you could hurt others you need to think about it, i have and ED but i would never EVER do something i even thought might hurt or effect people. and i think the return 'documentary' did more harm than good, with those who tried to help put in a negative light and the likes of Katie and Shane put on a pedestal though where are they now? Toxic positivity and denial is doing nothing but hurting people.

This is in no way ment as hate I just wanted to give my opinion. For me, I have been triggered by things you have shared before like graffic pictures from hospital admissions and numbers such as how many times you have been in hospital. And I know you where just trying to spread awernes to make people feel less alone however it triggered me. But I as a viewer have a responsibility to avoid things I know to be triggering to me. But I think the difference between you and Eugenea is that you take responsibility for the things you post and look back and aknowledge that you might have said triggering things in the past and learn from it. And from how I see it you talk about struggling with mental health from a point of recovery where as Eugeana in a way glamorize being skinny by not aknowledgeing her illness and the negative ways it affects her and others life.
I'm sorry if this came across as hate. As always love your videos. You are really brave🤍

Letting your scars be a part of your body like any other part of your body is in no way the same as posting emaciation for 2+ million people for the shock value and body checking.
Videos and photos of you where scars are visible are about you and your content and being like "hey I'm a normal person even though I've struggled with this" And the majority of the comments are about you or the content and some people being like wow I love watching your growth and everything
Her videos and photos are for people to say "hey, you're sick" and her to say "I'm not" and her eating disorder to say "keep going"
Like you can tell from her videos that she's in complete and utter denial and she won't even say the words anorexia or eating disorder and she has no idea what's going on and her sick brain is THRIVING off of it.
these things are not the same. her content should be flagged because she obviously isn't going to protect her viewers so it's fucking time for instagram and youtube and twitch to be like "yo, you can't post here until you're healthy" she's literally profiting from being so deathly ill

This is such an important video, I think it's so needed for people who actually have struggled with e.d or mental health to talk about it. It's such a awful and complex thing, and theres so many different layers to it but at the end of the day Eugenia is an adult who knows what she is doing and damaging and harming the people who follow her, but I think because of how poorly she is she doesnt realise the full extent of it or maybe she doesn't care idk.. Myself and sooooo many others have reported her content on all platforms and still it's out there. It's so heartbreaking because if she recovered and got better she'd literally be a success story and I think alot of people would really look up to her but I dont know if that would ever happen by this point. I personally feel that her videos and images she posts are body checks. When she came back onto the internet, she wore baggy clothes to hid her body, which showed that she was struggling with the new weight that she is carrying around. She didn't spend long enough recovering and getting the right help, so she easily slipped back into her old ways, and she became more comfortable wearing more tighter and revealing clothes because she could visibly see that she was getting thinner and that she was back at her ideal body weight. She is obviously not ready for recovery, and she does not seem to want it because she has been stuck in this ED for so long that this is comfortable for her, and that is all she seems to know. She needs help, long-term and consistent help where she can come to terms with her ED, and the way she handles it. She knows that her weight is what attracts people, but what she doesn't realise is how detrimental it is to her viewers, she just see the numbers and that's all she can fixate on. She is very unwell, and her mindset is sending her down a deep dark spiral where her weight and numbers consumes her, because she might associate the thinner she gets the more attention she gets, so she is seeing a positive instead of a negative.

Very well said. Thank you for speaking up about this. The real issue here is that she's not age restricted and she draws in such a young audience with her content always doing cosplays of childrens shows. On top of that she pretends she is perfectly fine. It would be one thing if she openly spoke about her struggle and was working on it but we can not let her normalize this. Nothing is normal about her life and children shouldn't think it is. I struggled with an ED for a few years in my later teens and I can only imagine if I saw her. My brain would have been like well if she can do it you can too, look at her with her cute clothes, long hair, making tons of money. There is no doubt in my mind she is the thinspo for more people then we could comprehend.

Thank you for talking about this Marie. I’m not subscribed to Eugenia either but have found the situation increasingly frustrating, and more so because I can empathise with her particular situation but object to her handling of it.
I have suffered from anorexia since I was 10/11 and now I am 26 I am bored sick of it - the limits it places on my life, the trap it leaves me in, the damage it does to me and those around me. Sadly, understanding the condition and having greater insight into myself isn’t a cure though, and I am still fighting and struggling a lot despite countless inpatient admissions and continuing treatment. In this sense I know what it is like to have an emaciated body, and to feel alienated on account of your relationship with food and yourself. I wish I could leave the house and not get stared at - just be treated like a normal person. It is not my fault I have anorexia and I wish people would be more accepting of visual differences and kind. BUT at the same time the parasitic psychological effects of the illness are so entrenched by now that I am quite habituated to starvation and low weight - so I often fear leaving my flat in case any one might think i look bigger than yesterday. A complete paradox when I can acknowledge and even resent how thin I am - but anorexia has become an identity that’s ever harder to deconstruct after 16 years. So just imagine the pressure Eugenia feels to maintain the terrifying physique viewers expect of her- to sustain the illness that is clearly garnering attention she has lacked somewhere else in her life, in front of an audience of millions, whose comments only subversively serve to endorse her decline. She has attained a certain lifestyle and esteem through her UA-cam, and that must be hard to throw away when it might be the best thing in her life, and perhaps she even feels a genuine responsibility toward fans to provide content. That being said, knowing that UA-cam will not deplatform a creator who earns them so much revenue, I WISH she would take the moral high ground and LEAVE to protect herself and her audience. She has got herself in a trap, but the even greater concern is the number of people she may be harming through her negative influence - whether or not it is inadvertent. Her content is triggering, no question. Eating disorder or none it’s shocking and glamorises critically ill health. She is body checking whether she even knows it or not. If she could acknowledge she had a problem and authentically assure her fans this would be a different story, one that might grant some in the way of education, raising awareness, destimgatisation, etc. And actually help people, as informative, experience-based mental health videos like yours have done. She should either: accept that she is ill and agree to take steps toward getting help whether that happens on or off camera OR accept that she is ill and admit that she does not want to get better - in which case the adult thing would be to go offline with immediate effect as frankly no one should have to witness self destruction in real time. Some people like me struggle daily to keep trying to live and it’s heartbreaking to see someone so deep In denial throw those efforts right back, and legitimise being critically unwell. Which she is, she is being incredibly immature to continually refuse that fact, let alone spreading false information and dangerous narratives. Selfishness and exhibitionism are NOT symptoms of anorexia so ultimately Eugenia is continuing her channel through self interest. She should take accountability and STOP. You’re right. It’s one thing accepting your body, scars etc. - and communicating them as signs of healing - I try to with my body even though I still feel a lot of shame. But it’s another thing deliberately drawing attention to those elements and making them out as normal, or even beneficial - in the way Eugenia glamorises her thinness and opens the way for many creeps out there to fetishise it. I don’t think anyone should be ashamed to show their body but everyone should be sensitive and mature enough to realise that physical representations do carry signifiers... I wouldn’t wear the skimpy clothes she does with my frame as I know it would look vile and disgusting and what’s more I am fucking freezing all the time! The girl needs a serious reality check and some THOUGHT for others who view her stuff, not just her own little world (as good as anorexia is at getting you trapped in there). I recently even tried to have a conversation with my young niece in an attempt to sensitively explain that I am ill, and that my body is ‘not normal’ and that my illness makes me sad, so I hope she can enjoy food and aspire to a healthy happy body etc. I wish Eugenia could be so honest with fans who look up to her. Suffering this illness for so long has been hell - I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. So I don’t know what she’s thinking carrying on like this. It’s worse than insensitive, triggering, or disrespectful... it’s pretty evil.
Omg sorry for the ramble, this is my first comment on UA-cam, like ever.
Big love Marie, much appreciate your authentic, vulnerable and empathic conversations. Keep shining x

I hadn’t been on her profile till now but I think if she addressed the situation and accepted that she is suffering and seeked helped her photos would be viewed in a different context however as this is not this case the photos come across differently like everything is ok and she is ‘healthy’ and her weight is ‘healthy’ which it isn’t. Therefore this could negatively influence viewers to perceive their healthy weight as overweight in comparison to hers

No, you're not a hypocrite. I have scars and they won't go away so the best thing I can do is not be ashamed of them and my past. I also suffered with 'food issues' as a young teenager and I found comfort in coming across other people online who are sharing their recovery journey. Eugenia basically caused me to relapse recently having never come across her until last year, just by seeing some video footage of her in another UA-cam video. She's not sharing any recovery journey but she's definitely flaunting this illness she has while denying it at the same time.
