  • Join me in this exciting episode of "DIY'er Does Electrics" as I tackle a couple of important electrical upgrades for my water sewage treatment plant. Watch as I change out the control panel and replace the existing double UK socket with an enclosed outdoor-style European one to eliminate issues with adaptors. To compensate for the lost double socket, I also wire up an external weatherproof double socket on the outside of the brick enclosure housing the control panel and compressor. This video aims to show that even seemingly daunting electrical tasks can be perfectly manageable for a DIY enthusiast. With a bit of caution and the right tools, you can safely and effectively handle these upgrades yourself. So, what's the worst that can happen? Tune in and find out! Extended and wired a whole new build on my property a few years back … 20 plug boxes over 4 rings. Cooker, geyser, solar/battery backup via a dual DB (included and excluded system). 8 rooms with 2-4 light options in each room.
    Really enjoyed the process - and learned a bunch. Not super difficult for us DIYers
    I did leave the final Trip switch disconnected - and paid a 1 hour charge for a “proper electrician” to screw that wire in … for insurance purposes

    Lots of suggestions for the Niimbot printers in the comments.. just to be a little dissenting:
    A: These are fixed size, unlaminated labels. Will they last years in outdoor conditions? Who knows.
    B: It's all run by an app. The data collection policy for the app makes interesting reading - especially the bits about collecting the content of your labels, and gathering and sharing your data without consent when it's in the 'public interest' or the name of 'state security' (neither being our public or state).
    Buy a plain alphanumeric label printer with a keyboard - I have a cheap old Brother which works fine. Feed it off-brand cartridges - including heatshrink, which is very useful.
    Apologies for any notification spam but this comment vanished twice already in prior forms - YT is 'fun' that way..

Whilst trying to add an electrical outlet in my sauna, I discovered the incoming main power supply plug was labelled opposite to what the control box had been wired for. BS7671 18th Edition ("The wiring regulations") requires that RCD protection be provided for all socket outlets rated up to 32A in outdoor locations. If you do not have a 30mA RCD upstream, then you should really be including one before the Schuko socket. The BS1363 socket you removed had one. Highly recommended. Could save your life. Easiest would be to replace the fused connection unit for one with an RCD. Another thing to think about is fusing. If the air pump requires a 3A fuse, you might require a 3A RCD protected fused switch for the Shuko, and retain the 13A fused switch for the BS1363 socket. Shuko sockets are not shuttered (a requirement for domestic premises), so I would be inclined to cut the plug off and wire it straight into a 3A RCD protected fused connection unit fed from the 13A fused connection unit.

      @@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT If it was my install, I would be okay with that from an earth fault perspective, provided there are no extraneuous metal parts near the pump end (metal water pipes, etc). That would complicate matters and at that point I would suggest employing an electrician. For fusing, I would probably install a BS1363 socket or fused connection unit for the pump. The weatherproof socket didn't need an RCD as you have one upstream (and would be frowned upon as there would be no selectivity, ie a fault on something plugged into the socket could cause the RCD in the board to trip taking out other circuits and causing a nusiance). These are my understandings of the wiring regulations. I am not qualified in this specific area. Seeking professional advise about outdoor wiring is recommended.

    Doesn't condensation happen due to cold? so even in the little roofed porch electronics can get damp and corrode. I imagine either the electronics in it's enclosure generates enough heat to keep the temperature above the dew point or there might even be heating resistors to heat up the air inside when it is cold. Could be if the power to the unit is switched off for a prolonged period in cold weather condensation can occur inside. Just me guessing.
    Lesson learned methinks!l!...namely always cut the wire longer than you think it needs to be.

  • @UKsystems
    @UKsystems 15 днів тому

    The main issue is DIY electrical work can be okay but it’s also very hard to prove that it’s safe without the proper test equipment as faults could develop later on it also appears you replaced an RCD socket with a non-RCD one I don’t know if there was any reason for the RCD one that meant it had to be fitted but very much could have been required? It has been fused down and then when you connect multiple sockets, you really have to redesign the circuit. It does appear that there are not type tested brands of circuit breakers together, which can cause problems also the twin and a half not being RCD protected is potentially a regulatory issue is worth knowing all of these things because it’s fine until it develops a fault or something goes wrong which if it’s a very severe fault that causes lots of damage insurance will not pay out because there is no valid test certificate
